5:00 am
started saturday afternoon and quickly exploded to 50,000 acres and counting. hundreds of homes and businesses already gone. thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate. right now, crews have no handle on this fire. it is 0% contained. >> we have team coverage on what is now the most destructive fire of the season. the conditions firefighters are facing right now. we'll begin with stephanie chuang. the words being used by many is apocaly apocalyptic. what are you seeing out there? >> it does feel apocalyptic and cal fire saying the number of homes and businesses completely destroyed could go up to 1,000 at this point and in this neighborhood, you could feel it. homes behind me still standing. some damage, but it is still up. just next door you see all this damage here. the garage, the foundation. a heater, hot water heater and
5:01 am
over here to the left even a melted set of golf clubs. a pretty eerie feeling here. everything burned and melted. devastating this town of fewer than 1,500. firefighters, 1,500 of them and support staff are attacking the valley fire which started saturday afternoon fueled by the drought conditions and the heat. one firefighter telling me this morning above all else, it's the wind that lasted for hours on end this weekend. wind that is pushing the fire now in almost every direction. it is waiting game now for many people, including those who live here in middleton. they have no idea what they're coming back to and not allowed back home until at least tuesday. >> behind me there is a swingset, for example. these are people's homes. these are people's lives that they left. not knowing what they're going to come back to. >> cal fire helicopters, air tankers were touch and go yesterday because of poor visibility with the heavy, lingering smoke and chopper base is actually damaged, just four firefighters who were in that
5:02 am
chopper were hurt. on the ground, second degree burns, skin damage when they tried to cut lines to contain the fire. the good news this morning is those four are recovering. they're in stable condition at the local uc davis biurn center. around 6:00 this morning is when we're expected to learn more about just how bad the damage is and what firefighters are facing today. of course, we'll keep you updated throughout the morning. live in middleton, stephanie chaung. >> the fire scorched up to 78 miles and late yesterday began moving towards napa and sonoma counties. overnight that focus turned from middleton to pope valley and a community called cedars in napa. at the same time, another arm of the fire moving towards northern sonoma county. that means more evacuations could be coming. bob redell live where several of
5:03 am
the estimated 10,000 evacuees spent the night. bob? >> and you've got several hundred of them here. this is one of three evacuation centers, scott, set up by this one by the red cross here at the napa county fairgrounds where you have this tent city set up. parking for people's rvs. even an area for their livestock. plenty of food here for them, as well as clothes. again, several hundred people from the surrounding communities have come here, including sterling, sayer and his wife, julia, who we just spoke with. they already heard from a pg&e worker. it was dumb luck that julian insisted that her husband, sterling, bring his rv to that event. they do have that. they are living in the rv at the napa county fairgrounds. the ashes of sterling's previous wife, all of it is gone.
5:04 am
>> we have nothing any more. we have each other. you know. what else can we ask for? i don't know, you have to look at things in a different light. you lose things in life. the things that are going to be hard the pictures and the kids things that they did for us. but we have each other. >> the earliest other evacuees will return to their communities, the earliest will be tomorrow. might not be until wednesday. coming up, we'll hear from some people who actually stayed behind to try to protect their homes during the valley fire. reporting live here, bob redell. >> thank you, bob. the smoke from that fire now raising concerns for much of the bay area. people have reported ash and haze from marin to santa clara counties. air quality officials say the smoke will likely impact every bay area county. anyone with breathing issues is
5:05 am
urged to stay indoors if they see or smell smoke in the air. what about those winds? let's turn to meteorologist carrie hall in the weather cente center right now. >> almost a completely different situation when you consider the wind. today from the south, that may cause the fire to spread in a different direction today. and it will also blow that smoke and the ash away from the bay area. once again, a difference from what we had yesterday at this time. as we go into the day looking at every level of the atmosphere, winds coming in from the southwest and even at the surface. more of a southerly wind pushing the ash farther into the central valley and north of the bay area. we also have a lot of humidity in the air. in napa, you can see the humidity right now is at 93%. and it is also cloudy. as we go into the day, we will also have a chance of some rain moving through. some spotty, light showers in the forecast for this afternoon. we'll keep an eye on that and a
5:06 am
look at those temperatures, too. that's coming up in a few minutes, scott. >> thank you, kari. the speed of this fire is just staggering. look at the timeline we put together on reports from cal fire. the fire first reported on cobb county as a structure fire at 1:30 on saturday afternoon. by 10:30 saturday night, it exploded growing to 25,000 acres or roughly the size of santa rosa. now stands at 50,000 acres. that's an area larger than the city of oakland. the valley fire already forced governor brown to declare a state of emergency. that declaration frees up additional state funding and resources including help from the national guard. the governor is also requesting assistance from fema. it is possible he will ask president obama to declare a federal disaster, which would open the area up to more federal resources. so far, however, that has not happened. one of four firefighters hurt saturday in the valley fire showing signs of improvement.
5:07 am
this is the picture of one of the victims. richard reef with his thumb up there. his crew came to visit him yesterday. as for the three other injured firefighters they are recovering at the sacramento area burn center. we wish them well. people are scamming fire victims through social media. the potential thieves are posing as news crews and asking evacuees for their addresses to check on their homes and then they go in and rip off the place. patrolling evacuated area to keep them safe, but they say it's still best not to give out your address online. humans not the only victims of the fires, people are posting pictures on facebook for lost and found pets. these dogs, cats, even horses that have to be reunited with their owners. they are also pleased from pet owners who could not get back to free their pets after the fire broke out. they're asking others in the area to help bring them to safety. many people have lost everything in the fires already

in lake and napa counties and some are turning to the red cross and others turning to their neighbors or others for help. >> you can make donations online. if you are in those counties they are accepting toiletries and drop them off at the caustoga fairgrounds, the fountain grove inn also in santa rosa and the napa bistro in napa, as well. you can also download our nbc bay area app. it's free. we've been checking in with kari. she's been watching the wind and the possibility maybe even a little rain. boy, would that help. >> yes, it would. especially since it's been so hot and dry. today temperatures coming down all across the bay. it was still warm in the east bay yesterday and even those temperatures much cooler this afternoon. los gatos a high of 79 and castro will be at 69 degrees. a lot of clouds, a few areas seeing some light showers like santa rosa in napa and today it
5:09 am
will be 75 degrees and antioch 82 and san ramon today 79 degrees. with cooler temperatures and little bit of rain, much-improved forecast. coming up a little bit later and let's check in with mike for the morning commute. >> we had the crash and that cleared and a new one towards the dublin interchange causing a lot of slowing. flashing lights arriving on scene. west 580 just at 680 and you see the jam up approaching from the b.a.r.t. station over there. look the map starting to slow down one lane is currently blocked by a big rig that is over there and there may be a couple other vehicles, as well. sending more traffic into the area and 84 now seeing folks cutting through between 580 and 680. the backup at the bay bridge has cleared from the cash lanes and now everything is back to your 509 commute. back to you. coming up, it is officially football season. what does that mean for the giant mess on roads and highways in the south bay?

it's monday night football. but the question fans and neighbors are asking, will traffic be a nightmare? today kris sanchez is live outside the stadium with the new plan to keep things moving. good morning, kris. >> good morning to you both. we'll know by this time tomorrow whether the first monday night game goes down in history or infamy. but the fans are ready and the stadium authority has come up with a new plan for traffic and what not. the nation watching this matchup between the niners and the vikings, not only because of the game that is happening on the field, but because they know this is where the next super bowl is going to be hosted. fans watching in person might also be wondering if the stadium authority changed up the playbook to get them into and out of levi a little more winningly, shall we say? you might recall that very first game at levi when it took fans hours to get out of the parking lot. tempers flaring with drivers

making questionable maneuvers to get out. more exit lanes and clearer signage for drivers heading out of the parking lot and a later game start. kickoff is tonight at 7:30. here is the advice from the police and 49ers and stadium authority. they say use public transportation, if it is at all possible for you. if you choose to drive, they say don't punch in the address into your gps because it is not going to account for the traffic flow plan that they have developed over the last year or so. tasman drive closed around 9:30 and stay shut for about 13 hours. don't park in residential neighborhoods. the lots open at 3:00. ticketholders can get into the stadium at 5:00 tonight. but, again, a lot of eyes watching not only the action on the field, but the action off the field, as the fans try to get into and out of the stadium. we'll keep you up to date on what we know as we know it. in santa clara, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." when it comes to the new

5:18 am
morning with low clouds starting to move in and in san francisco, not much rain just yet. as we look all across the bay area, we've seen some showers in the north bay and it's now 58 degrees. as we take look at the south bay, 60 degrees and highs in the 70s and 80s. yes a chance of rain in the forecast. but it will be dry out at levi stadium today. mostly cloudy skies and peeks of sun and by the time we kick off the game 68 degrees and 65 degrees by the end of the game. we also had a shift in the wind. now coming in from the south and southwest. and will be, continuing to pick up as we go through the day. wind speeds up to 20 miles an hour. little bit more breezy at the coast and the temperatures staying way down. we're all going to feel a cool down today with mostly cloudy skies. and a lot of the models have picked up on the possibility of some rain today, too. so, the clouds stay with us in the eastern parts of the east bay. we may have a little bit of clearing and then we start to see the possibility of some rain

shown there. this is what the radar could look like and we could see passing light showers and then all clears out as we go into tomorrow morning before the next round moves in. and the rainfall estimate shows us at we could get maybe 0.03 and then wednesday higher amounts of rain with that next disturbance moving through. look at that, santa rosa could get 0.03 and closer to 0.04 and the rest of us getting some trace amounts of rain. into the weekend, we will be turning hot, again. we will have a cool week and some temperatures that have been much cooler than we've seen recently. but it just ramps back up as we head into saturday and sunday. let's check in now with mike. >> good morning, kari. this shot looks kind of similar very similar to the last one we saw except the road conditions are different. the slow down towards 580 is jammed pup three lanes blocked instead of just one. westbound 580 at the dublin
5:20 am
interchange. crews have arrived because of that crash. now trying to get it over to the right shoulder. you're right, three lanes are blocked on the approach and quickly build that back up through dublin and heading out of livermore, you'll find more slowing. more traffic comes in and west 580 through the tri-valley. that's a problem this morning. the rest of your bay outside of that tri-valley, you're doing just fine. out of the bay bridge just fine and no problem towards san francisco. in the south bay, we talked about the, wow, that's an indicator there. we're talking about the congestion getting over towards levi stadium. b that will be an issue for local traffic. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it's 5:20. coming back to work for kentucky clerk kim davis. what will it mean for same-sex couples looking to get married in her county?

hard to say good morning to you, but, yes, it is. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. we know the fire turned dead last laly last night. the valley fire exploded over the weekend, growing to 50,000 acres and hundreds of homes and businesses are already gone. thousands more in its path. right now crews are no handle on this fire. it is 0% contained. >> we have team coverage and how communities are coming together and to what conditions firefighters are actually facing. first, let's get to stephanie chuang live in middleton. steph, what are you finding out this morning? >> well, laura and scott, the flames are heading in every other direction and heading mostly north. you can see the flames completely ripped through this neighborhood, not just this home where we're standing in front and you can see the garage and
5:30 am
foundation and set of golf clubs burned. next door, really, this is what you see all the way down the block. although some houses do look like they remain untouched. took just minutes for the flames to rip through these homes and cal fire says the number of homes and businesses destroyed so far could hit 1,000. way up from the several hundred count right now. 1,500 firefighters and support staff and fueled by the dry conditions and the heat and the gusty winds really the story here. over the weekend at some points going up to 40 miles per hour and lasting for hours. some people staying back to help firefighters like the harpers who own the grocery and hardware store in town. a welcome site for people who want to rescue abandoned animals. >> awesome. the first time we've seen them open and a sign of life, i guess. getting things back on track, i guess. >> while middleton tries to recover, the firefight is still very active. we have lots of flame videos and
5:31 am
seeing how houses were just completely on fire. firefighters are trying to set up fire and corral some of those flames. four firefighters got hurt over the weekend even trying to use hand tools to control flames. they are recovering. that's the good news. you see the devastation and one important note, i was talking to a cal fire and evacuation orders are not mandatory, but they really need people, especially in the communities where the fire is headed to heed the orders because firefighters need to be able to try and protect lives and homes and if people can just leave when they're asked to, it makes things so much easier and so much, of course, safer. >> thank you, steph. one of the four firefighters as steph mentioned hurt on saturday in the valley fire is showing signs of improvement. this is the picture of one of the victims. his crew came to visit him yesterday at uc davis medical center. as for the other three injured firefighters, they are recovering at the sacramento
5:32 am
area burn center. we know this is just the beginning as thousands of people pick up their belongings hoping they have something to go back to. >> bob redell live at the evacuation center where we're learning more about how evacuees are dealing with this disaster. >> laura and scott, that's the hard part for many of the people here at the napa county fairgrounds is not knowing whether or not their home is still standing. there is around 10,000 people who have evacuated the valley fire from all those surrounding communities. about 30 minutes from where we're at right now. several hundred of them made it here to the napa county fairgrounds where you can see they set up a tent city and they have rv parking and places for livestock and people who might have brought in their horses and what not. this is one of three centers opened up for evacuees. many of these people have little time to get out of the pire zone, especially if they live in communities like middleton which suffered a lot of destruction. within the first 15 hours, the
5:33 am
so-called valley fire destroyed over 100 houses. that's in the first 15 hours, which one firefighter said is unheard of. testimony is just how bad the drought is, which is why some residents had to rush out of there. however, some people did stay behind in an attempt to save their homes, including dave demonte who suffered burns and bruises. >> hoses, rakes, shovels. anything that you can get that you could use to get fire away from something. >> everything was burning from tree to tree and out in the back, too. >> the thought is that people will not be able to return to those communities until tomorrow at the earliest. might not even be until wednesday. coming up, we'll show you how generous the people in caustoga have been in terms of donations and what the red cross are asking people to do. the generosity has been

overwhelming. i'll explain socoming up. a popular resort and hot spring among the homes and businesses right in the path of the fire. evacuated early yesterday morning as that rapidly moving fire made its way towards the 5,000-acre property outside of middleton. many residents and staff gathered to wait for updates. >> peter had driven home and arriving in time to find that it was being evacuated. he assisted with the final evacuations getting all the guests out and then finally getting the last of us residents out. >> now, we do not know the state of the hot springs. this morning there are reports that it has been badly damaged. cal fire says it could be days before they can officially confirm what has or has not been destroyed. people across the bay area are seeing the smoke right now from the fires. some areas may have high concentrations of smoke for several hours.
5:35 am
anyone who sees, tastes or even feels that smoke is urged to stay indoors. >> winds will definitely not help the smoke situation. meteorologist kari hall joins us. what kind of conditions will firefighters face right now? >> we have a shift in the wind compared to yesterday at this time. yesterday a northernly wind and today coming from the south. we look at all levels of the atmosphere where we see more of a southwesterly wind today. that will blow the smoke and the ash away from the bay area and more towards the central valley and further to the north. we still could have concentrations in our smoke, especially in the north and east bay. humidity is very high. you see that in napa it's 93% and then even in livermore it's 72%. with a low clouds this morning. we do have a chance of rain in the forecast today, especially this afternoon. we'll keep an eye on that and also what teex pect over the next few days with cooler temperatures. that's coming up. scott? >> thank you very much. well, the valley fire is not the first wildfire to strike this particular area of lake
5:36 am
county this year. >> that is the third in two months. part of the valley fire burn area is just a couple of miles from the jerusalem fire, which was also devastating. you can see it here on the map marked in purple. that fire started at the beginning of august and burned for three weeks. the flames ripped through 25,000 acres of land and burned six homes. there was also the monstrous rocky fire. this one started at the end of july. by the time it was over, 70,000 acres and 43 homes were destroyed. so, the valley fire, not the only large wildfire burning right now. laura, you have more detail on that. >> this map really will give you a good idea of where these fires are actually burning in our state. in central and northern california. let's start out with a fire itself this one is southeast of fresno. the 17th largest fire in california history. it's been burning since late july. they say the drought-like conditions in that area really
5:37 am
making it tough for firefighters to get a handle on this one. almost 130,000 acres burned here. only 31% contained. southeast of sacramento area. and this is a source of a lot of poor air quality that is rushing into the central valley area. this about 65,000 acres so far only 25% contained. now, the monster of them all right now is this valley fire that broke out on saturday afternoon. the thing is, this is a monster fire engulfing 50,000 acres so far. and look at that. it is 0% contained. firefighters having a really tough one with this one, scott. they need help. >> and bay area firefighters were joining in the effort to knock down that butte fire burning. 15 fire engines from san mateo county now assisting on the front lines as fire burned more than 60,000 acres. well, wildfires burning across the state are stretching

commute direction at the dublin interchange. that's the problem for the tri-valley as traffic moves in. the rest of the tri-valley off of that interchange moves very smoothly, though. the bay bridge is clear, but we have the backup just starting to form. as far as the crashes, it's cleared. the two crashes in richmond and san pablo. for the upper east, you're also bogging down. two problems one for 580 and one for west 80. traffic is just backing up over here for the fastrack lanes. back to you. speaking of traffic, happening today, it's game day. not just for the 49ers but levi stadium officials will implement a plan that will make a better traffic experience for those fans headed to the stadium. >> kris sanchez live outside the stadium with how the plans will make for a smooth commute. we'll see. >> i'll tell you, probably a lot of the 49ers faithful are working that it will work a double tonight because we know that there's going to be traffic.
5:40 am
how smoothly it flows remains to be seen. but we know that the fans are ready for the action on the gridiron this morning and the nfl nation is going to be watching because this matchup is not only between the 49ers and the vikings, but also a preview of levi stadium which is going to host the next super bowl next year. fans watching in person, though, might be wondering if the stadium authority changed up the playbook enough to get them in and out of levi stadium a little more winningly. that very first game at levi when it took fans hours to get out of the parking lot. questionable maneuvers to get in and out. better signage for drivers headed out of the parking lot and a later game start for this one, too. kickoff is coming up at 7:30 this morning. here's the advice from police and from the 49ers. if at all possible, make sure you use public transportation. if not, car pool. if you drive, don't use your gps. it will not account for the
