70,000 acres now. crews continue to gain more ground on the flames. right now fires contain 35%, but, there are 7,600 billings still in its path. 600 buildings have been can stroyed already by the fire. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live with details on a second victim found. steph? >> late last night we confirmed there has been a second death in the valley fire, but still waiting this morning to hear from the lake county sheriff on who this second victim was. what we do know was that at least four people have been identified as missing. one of them a former san jose mercury news reporter, 69-year-old leonard neft and he said on the phone saturday afternoon he told them he was ignoring a warning to leave because he did not smell smoke. but not long after that he realized he had to go and try to drive on a road and hike it out. he lived on anderson road where

houses were burned through. again, he is just one of the four still missing. >> the circumstances surrounding the report lead us to believe that they may have been overcome by the fire. people last heard of them before the fire broke out and haven't been heard from since. >> lake county sheriff brian martin is not releasing the names of the other three that are missing. the other in a remote area of midd middletown. that man was on the phone with his wife and said the truck wouldn't start and he was going to try to make a run for it. the four people have not been heard since saturday. we're waiting to hear from the identity on the suspected victim. could be a fifth person, not one of the four missing, but that is considered unlikely. live here in calistoga. >> sad news coming out of there. thank you. volunteers were in mop-up mode overnight as the tent city where most evacuees were staying.

they are making the best of a really horrible situation. two families, neighbors from middletown are sharing a tent. insaid four kids, three dogs and a cat. >> it's a mixed thing. i'm happy that our house is and we're okay. obviously, i'm grateful that my family is okay. but i feel torn between being happy but then knowing that a lot of people and families that i know and care about lost their houses. >> so many families say they left with nothing but the clothing on their backs and volunteers have given them everything from tents to dog food. about 100 miles east of us two bodies were also found in the aftermath of the butte fire. a man who refused to evacuate died when the fire swept through. while crews were investigating that death, they found a second body. the butte fire started about a week ago and burned through roughly 75,000 acres and it's about half contained at this

magnitude quake that struck off the northern chilean coastline yesterday killing five people. causing small tsunami waves that flooded small coastal towns in that country. other tsunami waves have been traveling away from chile. across the pacific. you look at this live picture from long beach in southern california and the first set of waves, if you want to call them that, were supposed to hit around 4:46, 4:47 local time. we watched it and there was no perceptible change in the level of water. that's not to say that it didn't come here, but maybe just only six inches or less. it just wassen something th en' could see. not dramat,ic, again. they expect the waves to continue. those waves expected to arrive a little bit after 6:00 a.m. our time. >> so far it's just an advisory. it's actually downgraded from a watch. so, the likelihood of something devastating is fairly low. there's no relationship between

earthquakes in chile with earthquakes in california. so, we locally certainly have nothing to worry about. >> several video cameras caught yesterday's quake in chile. 8.3 caused capital buildings in santiago to sway. many people ran out into the streets. several aftershocks. at least one which was a magnitude 7. reporting live here in berkeley, bob redell. thank you, bob. new details on a home invasion turned hostage situation out of took two people hostage at the home on belmont avenue. the s.w.a.t team helped arrive on scene and resolve that situation. no one was hurt. we'll monitor the story and bring you details as they become available. new details in a bizarre kidnapping case. this morning, the victims in that apparently very real kidnapping plan to sue the city. back in march, denise and her

boyfriend say kidnappers broke into their home and demanded money. two days later she turned up safe in huntington beach hours before the ransom was due. matthew mueller was arrested for committing that crime. the suit claims the city made unfair and false accusations against the couple. 5:07. little bit of rain hit the bay area. just how much. >> laura, we had most of the rain in the north bay and up around the valley fire where we had 0.4. we were getting some spots that had measurements farther to the north of half an inch and then as it moved across the bay area, the rainfall amounts less and less and also in berkeley and in san jose. it started to rain just a little bit and then it just stopped because we didn't measure that much. that did help out with the valley fire and our temperatures will be cooler today. milder compared to what we'll see as we head into the weekend,

about moments and, boy, we're punching, again. >> donald trump gave as good as he got last night. in typical fashion trump took aim and contrary to the spirit of ronald reagan, whose presidential library hosted the debate, the candidates did fire back. there was some personal moments in there. carly fiorina got emotional when talking about her 35-year-old stepdaughter who died as a result of drug addiction. jeb bush revealed that he smoked pot 40 years ago and tweeted later, sorry, mom. the 11 leading candidates squared off for more than three hours and the candidates talked about other issues aside from legalizing marijuana. they talked about immigration and iran and jobs and the economy and taxes. carly fiorina whose leading poll numbers landed her on the first stage this season wasn't the only one to violate ronald reagan's rules. don't attack your fellow republicans. >> i think woman all over this country heard very clearly what rand paul said. >> do we want someone with that

>> it's a big day in business news. stocks rose again on tuesday ahead of the interest rate decision by the federal reserve as energy stocks were boosted by a big jump in oil prices. futures are pointing to a lower open as the markets are still split on whether the fed will pull the trigger on the first interest rate hike in a decade. look for data today on unemployment, housing starts and building permits. the dow rising 16739. the nasdaq up 28. federal prosecutors are reportedly set to announce a settlement with general motors today over whether the automaker hid problems with faulty ignition switches. reports say gm will pay a fine of $1 billion. gm recalled 2.6 million cars worldwide last year. to repair switches that led to 124 deaths and 275 injuries. and the list is getting a list in china. the ride-sharing service is partnering allowing the company to serve each other's passengers and respective countries.

79 in the north bay and the peninsula today topping out at 78 degrees. let's go hour by hour. for livermore, it will be in the lower 60s. with the clouds starting out at 6:00. we'll gradually see those clouds clearing out as we know througo the morning lunchtime. great weather today, highs topping out in the lower 80s and then the breezy wind kicks in and then we'll have clear skies and, also, temperatures dropping back into the 60s tonight. one thing i'm watching, the air quality because we do still have the valley fires to the north and our wind will now shift from the south to the north. and that will bring in some of that smoke from the valley fire into the bay area. so, lower air quality expected today and some guests up to 20 miles an hour. now that the system that brought us the rain yesterday continues to move to the east, we're getting ready for some hot and hazy weather and high pressure building across the region in the valleys. we're talking highs on saturday

and sunday in the 0s and near 100 degrees. here's a look at the microclimates for the weekend. as you make plans, you want to make sure you stay cool. highs in the 90s in the tri-valley and 100 degrees on sunday and san francisco 77 on saturday and 82 degrees on sunday. let's check in now with mike. >> we're looking at a backup part of the bay bridge, but over here this is the left approach. look at these cash lanes. fa fastrack on the right last ten minutes stacking up over here and some folks are fumbling with their cash. look over towards oakland with the traffic flowing southbound and better news heading in the southbound drekdz. as we look at your map, the incident at 29 is not in the freeway itself, but only on lanes for the 29 on ramp. if that is not your on ramp, you're fine. watch for the flashing lights and there is a stall here. still have that crash, 680 approach from westbound highway 4. but no slowing showed up and not much of a slow down there.

nile virus in marin county. it's the cous 5:23 right now. a man has contracted the west nile virus in marin county. the county's first human case this year. the 57-year-old is recovering at home this morning. it's not clear where he contacted the virus. west nile is transmitted from humans, to humans from mosquitos. people ages 50 or older have a higher chance of getting sick. the contra costa and an insected is will be sprayed. no special precautions need to be taken during the fogging. it turns out when it comes to antibacterial versus regular

soap it is a wash. no more effective than plain soap when it comes to reducing bacteria. korean researchers tested the effects in 20 different strains of bacteria. they found no difference between the anti-bacterials and the plain soaps when it comes to fighting illness. no harm in eating wheat or dairy. word from new research on the behavior of children with autism. the study included 14 kids who stayed on a gluten and milk-free diet for months. they were given meat, dairy or placebo once a week. experts say most diet restrictions are not harmful for autistic children, still, parents should always consult with their doctor. forget lunch meetings, business deals are going from boardroom to bicycles within an emerging funaphenomenon.

refused to revacuarefu refuse to evacuate when the fire swept through. the butte fire started a week ago and burned through roughly 72,000 acres and more than 200 homes. it is 45% contained this morning. the story from the fires are certainly heartbreaking. the images unimaginable. this morning a little bit of happy news. animal researchers looking for lost dogs near the butte fire came across this little guy. a 4-month-old mountain lion cub. the cub had burns on his paws and his face was singed because of the fire. >> however, for the most part, large animal such as deer, bear, mountain lion usually can get out in front and make it to safety, but that's not always the case. >> the cub was taken to an animal hospital and they have named him fire claw. san francisco firefighters will brighten the day for the children of thousands of families displaced by the valley

berkeley size burke size malogical lab. >> that is still in effect for hawaii and part of the california coastline. we're talking about a coastline stretched from about 45 miles south of los angeles to around 50 miles north of san luis obispo. that tsunami was about to hit 45 minutes ago and you're looking at video of long beach, california. at around that time. and you're probably wondering, well, i didn't see a tsunami. well, if it did hit, it was clearly not, whatever the amount of wave height we could see it change, you could not see from that camera point of view and then there is, of course, no reports of anything significant in terms of damage or anything like that, which is not a big surprise. of course, tsunami waves are still traveling towards hawaii. supposed to hit that state a little bit after 6:00 this morning at around 6:11. >> so far it's just an advisory

boy who was swept away enters its third day. he was in one of two vehicles swept away along the utah/arizona border. he is the last person still missing. 12 people have been confirmed killed after a wall of water hit those vehicles. flash floods killed four people in zion national park. to a police standoff in san jose overnight. dozens of officers surrounded a road near christopher elementary school. neighbors tell oswoman with a gun barricaded herself inside a home. the standoff lasted about three hours before she surrendered. police are asking you to look at these photos of a man wanted for armed robbery. this suspect robbed the same concord atm twice within a week. the crimes happened a few weeks ago at wells fargo on willow pass road. he's suspected of showing his gun to two victims and demanding their money at the atm. police say another suspect acting as a lookout. certainly if you recognize this

man, you are asked to contact concord police. it is 5:36. shock rippling through the san jose police force after a sergeant was arrested for indecent exposure. police arrested james mason on friday on woodside road in redwood city. they say a woman reported the 13-year veteran exposing himself in his personal car as she walks by. officers say she even took photos of the incident. >> i'm walking to get away from him. and then she noticed his car was parked up ahead of her, again. and as she walked by him this time, she used the phone on her camera to take some pictures. >> mason is currently on administrative leave. he's been charged with indecent exposure and committing a lewd act in public. if convicted, he could spend up to a year in jail. a group of south bay parents asking to recall a school board president. morgan hill schoolboard president was served illegal papers this week. parents are unhappy with several

pressure will be building in. with that high pressure, not much of an onshore flow and the valleys will be heating up into the 90s and near 100 degrees. so, rapidly warming the next couple of days after seeing some 70s and 80s today. it's mostly 80s tomorrow and then by saturday, we've got widespread 90s in the south bay, as well as the tri-valley and the north bay and then a couple of spots hitting near 100 degrees in the south bay, as well as the tri-valley. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. >> looking down towards san jose an early start. every since labor day we've seen this jam up north of 680 and happening 15 minutes earlier. look at the map, all over the south bay, seeing the trend start earlier and san martin and 87 kicking in. again, that's about 15 minutes earlier. we'll let things sort out and we'll see how things hold up for the rest of the quarter or semester there.

looking at north 680 a crash over off of the roadway might be a distraction for the southbound side and flashing lights and car went off the road and easy drive for the dublin interchange and now building over towards the peninsula. highway 92 no drama for the bridge. the bay bridge is the only real slow point coming off the of the maze. the metering lights are on. no problems into the city. the san francisco municipal transportation agency says it will need nearly $1 billion a year. according to the capital improvement plan, it will take $21 billion to keep muni, bike lanes and roadside features in a state of good repair for at least the next 20 years. help with funding could be coming soon, both at the state and federal levels. san francisco voters approve the $500 million bond for sfmta last november. for affordable housing in san francisco continues this morning. at 11:00, a public hearing will be held at city hall on the proposed 5m high rise project. the fifth in mission.

the planning commission along with the rec and park department, we'll hear concerns from people who live in that neighborhood. many are worried about being priced out. the developer of the 470-foot high rise project maintains a good percentage of the unit will be affordable housing if required by law. happening today an environmental group raising concerns about caltrans plans to bring down an old piece of the bay bridge in one big blast. right now crews are dismantling the eastern span piece by piece but a plan to take down the biggest pier, a 260-foot chunk of concrete with explosives. today in an environmental group will oppose that plan at a public hearing. using explosives could spread concrete debris into the bay. it will be able to contain that rubble. 5:52. four years since the mess of occupy wall street movement. how far we have come since the massive protest and how people in the bay area will be remembering it, coming up next. got a tip for nbc bay area

he is charged with taking a photographer's camera just days after he was shot in a nightclub. both men have pled not guilty. knight has already been ordered to stand trial on murder and attempted murder after a hit and run in l.a. today marks the four-year anniversary of occupy wall street. people in the bay area remembering it with a rally. the movement started in new york city's financial district back in 2011 and spread in front of the ferry building in san francisco as a way to protest social and economic inequality. this afternoon, people are set to gather on the steps of san francisco's city hall starting at 12:30. guest speakers will talk about closing the inequality gap for both income and housing. it's 5:56. changing the way you get help. the bay area company is being recognized by the white house for developing an app that helps emergency crews find your location. the blue light app allows you to send your location to 911 dispatchers right away from a smartphone.
