surprise. the metering lights on and 880 overcrossing. map will show you a smooth drive on that whole approach and a little build for the east shore freeway coming down through richmond. here the rest of the bay shows a nice, smooth flow. the south bay, though, i'll give you the live shot. this one has been a trend, let's say, for the last week or so. an early start to this slow down at 101 and around the bay start to build to the silicon valley. now to a developing story as firefighters take advantage of cooler weather and making some progress in the fight against the valley fire. crews are stepping up their search for several missing people and this morning we could learn more about the second person found dead among some of the ashes. we have your latest numbers. the fire has burned more than 70,000 acres so far. two people have been killed and four people missing. firefighters have the fire 35% contained and hope for another day of temperate weather will

give them more ground today. stephanie chuang live where evacuees have been living since saturday and, steph, still people waiting for word about their loved ones. >> there are, laura and scott. right now here at the evacuation center, people are starting to wake up and grab coffee and breakfast and i just spoke with one of the cooks here with the boosters club who has been here feeding people every day. he did not hear about this second fire death here for the valley fire. so, it's starting to hit people now. unfortunately, some people still don't know what is happening with their loved ones. at least four people are still missing. one of them is 69-year-old leonard naft is the former san jose mercury reporter. he lives on rose anderson road where we saw a huge fireball engulfing fires on both sides. they found his car about a quarter of a mile away but cadaver dogs did not find any trace of him. his daughter says on saturday afternoon he told his wife he was ignoring a warning to leave because he didn't smell smoke

but not much long after he realized he had to go. >> he said he was going to try to drive to one of the outlying roads and hike out. >> lake county sheriff brian martin is not releasing the names of the other three who are missing. martin says two were together and the other in a remote part of middletown. the sheriff says that man was on the phone with his wife as he tried to escape the flames but he could not start, so he was going to try to outrun the flames by going on foot and making a run for it. these four people who have been missing haven't been heard from since saturday. we don't have an identity of the second victim of this valley fire. we're expecting to hear from the lake county sheriff later this morning. >> thank you, stephanie. volunteers certainly there in mop up mode overnight as the steady downpour drenched that tent city where you are. many evacuees trying to make the best of the horrible situation.

two neighbors are sharing a mega tent. four kids, three dogs and a cat. she saw her home for the first time yesterday and it is still standing. >> it's a mixed thing. i'm happy that our house and we're okay and i'm grateful that my family is okay. but i feel torn between being happy but knowing that a lot of people and families that i know and care about lost their house. >> they say they left with nothing but the clothing on their backs and volunteers have given them everything from those tents to dog food. for complete coverage of the valley fire and information about how you can donate, go to nbcbayarea.com and we have more interviews and videos, as well. about 100 miles east of us, crews found two bodies battling the butte fire. a man who refused to evacuate died when that fire swept through. another body was found while crews were investigating. the butte fire started about a week ago. already burned through roughly 72,000 acres and more than 200 homes.

it is 45% contained this morning. we're following another developing story this morning. a magnitude 8.3 earthquake followed by 15-foot waves in chile. still assessing the damage there from that earthquake and the tsunami. >> the quake struck the southamerican country yesterday afternoon killing five people and now people as far away as hawaii and even here in california bracing for a possible fallout. >> we watched some of the waves come in earlier and bob redell live at uc berkeley size mu logical. an area north of san luis obispo. this after an 8.3 earthquake struck the northern coast of chile yesterday. killing what was now eight people. that's an upgrade in the death toll, unfortunately.

causing tsunami waves that flooded coastal towns in that country. and it also sent waves away from chile across the pacific ocean in our direction. so, the first set of waves, if you want to call them that, were supposed to strike california around 4:47 our time. we had a camera rolling over long beach, california. and this is what we saw. nothing except for what looked like normal ocean activity. nothing perceptible. no change in the height of the waves and, of course, no reports of damage. and again those waves are still headed to hawaii and they're supposed to hit that island state about ten minutes from now. and we'll, of course, get back to you on what, if anything, does happen. again, we are talking about tsunami advisories, seismolog t seismologists here at cal in menlo park do not expect them to cause any kind of significant damage. a quake striking and flooding coastal towns in that country.

reporting live here at cal, bob redell. thanks, bob. to utah hope dwindling as the hope for a boy swept away in flash floods enters its fourth day. he was in one of two vehicles swept away along the utah/arizona border. he is the last person still missing. 12 people have been confirmed killed after a wall of water hit those vehicles. flash floods also killed at least four people in nearby zion national park. it is 6:06. new details on a home invasion turned evacuation. in the neighborhood where two armed men took two people hostage last night. it happened on belmont avenue not far from beverly hills elementary school. tried to make contact with the suspect for hours and the armd men got away. no one was hurt. a standoff in san jose overnight. dozens of officers surrounded a home near crist. >> marty: elementary school.

neighbors tell us a woman with a gun barricaded herself in that home. shock is rippling through the san jose police force after a sergeant was arrested for indecent exposure. police arrested james mason on friday on woodside road. the veteran exposing himself and officers said she eeven took photos of the incident. >> walking to get away from him and then she noticed his car was parked up ahead of her, again. and as she walked by him this time, she used the phone on her camera to take some pictures. >> mason is currently on administrative leave. he has been charged with indecent exposure and committing a lewd act in public. if convicted, he could spend up to a year in jail. new developments to tell you about on a bizarre kidnapping case once declared a hoax by police. the victims plan to sue the city. back in march, denise and her

boyfriend aaron quinn say kidnappers broke into their home, abducted her and demanded money. two days later, she turned up safe in huntington beach hours before the ransom was due. months after police questioned their story, matthew mueller was arrested for committing the crime. the suit claims the city made unfair and false accusations against the couple. they really believe that they had not been, in fact, kidnap d kidnapped. 6:08. so glad, kari, that we got some rain in middletown. that made a difference. >> that's near the valley fire and 0.4, a pretty good amount, especially in the north bay. we see the amounts of rain of at least a quarter of an inch and then as you head over towards san francisco and much less. and as it continued to cross the south bay, just a few raindrops. it was very spotty and light. but that has helped, hopefully, with the containment. we'll get another update this morning and the high today will be 75 degrees.

temperatures climbbing over the next couple of days into the 90s. the weather will be unfavorable for the crews trying to get a little bit of a handle on the wildfire in the north bay. into the next few hours, we will have more of a northwesterly wind and that may carry some of the smoke into the bay area today. so, keep in mind we may have some lower air quality, even though this temperature will be nice and comfortable today. i'll talk more about the heat up this weekend and what you can expect coming up a little bit later. let's see what you can expect on the roads this morning with mike. >> kari, we weren't expecting, we were expecting for the next couple of weeks this change over here and northbound seeing a burst, 15 minutes earlier than the commute typically started. it's calming down right now. 101 and 87 into downtown and expect another burst of traffic to kick in in about another 20 minutes. now looking at north 680 and that crash still off of the roadway and crews still there. a distraction and that hasn't affected your commute southbound through the area and towards

san jose. still have the clouds by 8:00 and gradually clear as you go through the morning. 11:00 and bright and sunny and 68 degrees. lunchtime 70 degrees and enjoy lunch outside. nice, comfortable weather and continues through the afternoon and in the mid-70s and a breezy wind coming in from the north. as we look at all the microclimates today, saratoga will be up to 79 degrees and burlinggame 77 and embarcadero at 71 degrees and 80 in napa and oakland 75 and san ramon today at 79 degrees. with all of the clearing today and the next couple of days, we're getting ready for a warm up in the forecast as high pressure builds across the south. it will be hot and hazy and moderate air quality, too, as we won't have much of a strong onair flow. heating up to the 90s and even 100 degrees. microclimates for the weekend. i'm thinking the beach is back in the forecast and the weekend plans. 87 degrees for the tri-valley tomorrow and then 96 degrees on

out in front and make it to safety. that's not always the case. >> rescuers say they were able to walk over to the cub and take him out. they've named him fire claw. in the meantime, san francisco firefighters looking to bright on the day for. at 9:00 this morning fire crews will load donated toys at station 9 over on gerald avenue and more than 30 san francisco firefighters have been deployed to one of the several wildfires around the state. last year the fire department distributed over 200,000 toys to disadvantaged children. >> good for them. coming up, we'll continue to cover the valley fire. missing since saturday, crews focus on finding four people who haven't been seen since that fire swept through middletown. people living along california's coast on alert this morning as emergency crews issue a tsunami warning stemming from an earthquake in chile.

"today in the bay" bob redell live at uc berkeley seismol seismological lab has the latest. >> advisories are in effect for california and hawaii and we're talking about the coastline that, excuse me, extends south of los angeles and north of san luis obispo and the first set of waves will hit around 4:47 and our sister station in l.a. point ed and what did we see? look like a normal day at the beach for that time of the morning and right now that wave is expected to continue on to hawaii's coast and strike the island state around 6:45. that is supposed to be a three-foot wave. we will know in about 50 minutes whether that turns out to be the case. we have a camera pointed at oahu, as well. >> just an advisory actually

downgraded from a watch. the likelihood of something devastating is fairly low. there's no relationship between earthquakes in chile with earthquakes in california. so, we locally certainly have nothing to worry about. >> now, this is a result of an 8.3 magnitudeurt earthquake that struck off the northern coastline off of chile killing eight people and that is the latest death count and also flooding, small coastal communities along that country after a tsunami wave struck that coastline. not sure exactly how much damage was caused by that. again, so, tsunami advisories downgraded from a tsunami watch in effect for part of the california coastline. not here in the bay area and hawaii. again, something to possibly strike hawaii within the next ten minutes or so. reporting live here at cal, bob redell. >> thank you, bob. shock rippling through the san jose police force after a sergeant was arrested for

the inmate needs help. >> we recognize we have a different inmate population now. it's changing in terms of more mental heth. >> it's very crucial that they get the training before they go into the jail. >> cadets use d to only receive four hours and up to 40 hours. a group of south bay parents are asking to recall a school board preb. served legal papers this week. parents are unhappy with several decisions made by the board under his leadership. also reports that parents are upset with the way he treats those who disagree with him. for the recall, the parent group will have 120 days to get signatures of support. a billion dollars a year what the san francisco transportation agency says it will need to be efficient over the next 20 years. capital improvement plan this week. it will take $21 billion to keep muni, bike lanes and roadside

features in the state of good repair for two decades. help with funding could come soon. state and federal levels. san francisco voters also approved a $500 million bond for the sfmta last november. the fight for affordable housing in san francisco continues this morning. at 11:00, a public hearing will be held at city hall on the proposed 5m high rise project at fifth and mission street. the planning commission along with the rec and park department will hear concerns from people who live in that neighborhood. many of whom are worried about being priced out. developer of the high rise project maintains a good percentage of units will be affordable housing. happening today, an environmental group raising concerns about the cal trans plan to bring down part of the old bay bridge in one big blast. crews are dismantling piece by piece but a plan to take down the biggest pier a chunk of concrete with explosives. today an environmental group will oppose that plan at paublic hearing.

wind at the ground level. so, the air quality may be a little bit lower today. you may notice some drifts of smoke actually going through the afternoon. this weekend it does heat up as high pressure builds in the valleys. it will be in the 90s and up to 100 degrees. that's what we're expecting in a tri-valley. tomorrow will be in the 80s and then 90s on saturday for many spots and by sunday we could be hitting 100 degrees in the tri-valley. 80s and the peninsula will be at 83 degrees tomorrow and then up to 92 degrees on sunday. that's also when that heat will be -- let's see how the morning commute is going with mike. >> we're peeking at the bay bridge. no surprise for folks and the backup for the cash lanes and look fastrak lanes moving pretty well. we're looking at your maps and remember in san francisco, dream force continues as scott just told you, a couple special guests. ms. arquette and ms. alba over

not releasing the names of the others that are still missing. the man was on the phone with his wife as he was trying to escape the flames that were overtaking his neighborhood. unfortunately, he told her over the phone that his truck wouldn't start, so he's going to try to outrun the fire and head off on foot. later this morning is when we're set to hear from the sheriff on the detail of the second valley fire death. moving forward i spoke with the man from canine search and rescue who said he's here for day one and he wants to find pets and people and just help give loved ones closure. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." the butte fire to our east has proven deadly, as well. the bodies of two people were found in burned debris. the butte fire started about a week ago and burned through roughly 72,000 achers and more than 200 homes. it is 45% contained this morning.
