on live television in virginia. vicky gardner is with us along with her husband, tim gardner. good morning to both of you. >> good morning, savannah. >> vicky, you spoke last night and you sounded good and now i can see you look good. the whole country wants to know how you're feeling, how you're doing this morning. >> it's a day-by-day recovery. it's hard to know what to expect as the day goes by. when you combine the physical and the mental, i feel like i'm the poster child for recovery. so i'm feeling good. >> you look like the poster child for recovery and resilience for sure. vicky, normally if i talk to somebody who has been through something like this, i think i can't imagine what it must have been like. unfortunately so many people in your case, including your husband, saw this unfold on television.

i know you decided to watch that video. why was that important to you? >> well, you know, your mind can conjure up all sorts of things. i wanted to make sure what my mind is thinking and reality kind of match up. this is really important, it's not something you can suppress. you have to face it and piece together the pieces of the puzzle. >> i know you remember every single thing about those moments. take my back to that time. what was going through your mind? how did you survive? >> well, i will say, let me start real quickly of saying in preparing for this, the whole idea was a great big celebration, it was the 50th anniversary of smith mountain lake and what can we do to showcase this, and we had ideas galore. when alli san and adam and i got

together and we began sharing all of these things and saying how can we put it all into three segments of a live show, we had a great time in doing that. and so, you know, it unfolded as meeting with them and showing them all of our materials and how can we best portray. adam was such a pro at finding the best angles and working off of allison and how can we say this in the very best way? so we did the very first segment there at the visitor center and then in the second segment, it was, you know, which was probably 30 minutes later, we had another person, a marketing person, jerry hale, who came in to help us out with that and skri yet and so he did just a

remarkable job. thankfully jerry stepped away and said i've got a lot of other meetings and so itch thank goodness that he left. the third segment was to be done outside as the sun was coming up overlooking smith mountain lake. the office and visitor center is right there on the water. so what a perfect setting for us to go ahead and do this third section. and so we set up, we were trying to create everything, trying to be focused on the camera, focused on allison standing next to me and then probably the part that everybody has heard over and over again but it really was surreal is that we saw movement behind us, i saw movement behind us of somebody coming up, not knowing what their purpose was, not knowing if it was a maintenance person looking for answers, not -- just not understanding.

i saw somebody that looked a little boxy and which of course the full armor gear explained that. and then of course everything just was rapid, it unfolded from there, his arm went up and so unexpected, a mind can't conjure up what reality, even though you're living it and so he was shooting and we did, you know, you've heard it, you've seen many things that transpired. adam went down, all of the fire happened to be at face level. allison had moved off in a different direction and i just felt the very best thing was just to drop just to pretend as though i had been hit and just drop and go into fetal position, of which of course it was

somewhat quiet, he did whatever it was that he did that i couldn't see because my position and then he came back just i guess to be sure and shot me in the back. and then, you know, from that point there was a lot of things, a lot more than i can explain at this point. but rescue came in, you know, everything that anybody could possibly do to take this tragedy and turn it into the very best scenario that they could they did, what with our rescue team, with our police, with everyone. >> well, vicky, as you said at the beginning, you are the absolute picture of resalience and recovery. you managed to survive in an unthinkable situation. you spoke to him in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. we're so happy to see you and see what good condition you're in. i know how much you feel passion

skies and a breezy wind as we go into the rest of the day. have a great one. >> and that's your latest forecast. >> thank you so much. now to more of our special week-long series where are they now. in 2003, army private jessica lynch was the center of a dramatic story that grabbed the world's attention. she was severely injured, captured and eventually rescued in the early days of the iraq war. we will talk with jessica in just a moment. first, more on her extraordinary journey. >> here's the latest on operation iraqi freedom today. the u.s. military confirming that 12 american soldiers are missing. >> in 2003, while serving in iraq, army private jessica lynch was part of a convoy ambushed by enemy forces. >> you are still holding out hope that she will be found safe? >> yes, ma'am, we are. >> 11 soldiers were killed in that attack. lynch survived but her back was broken, her legs and her feet crushed.

just 19 years old at the time, she was held as a prisoner of war in saddam hussein hospital. then nine days after the ambush, lynch's dramatic rescue by u.s. troops was seen all around the world. >> doing wonderful. okay? >> she has been freed and brave souls put their lives on the line to make this happen. >> she became the symbol of heroism. and lynch would celebrate it in her hometown return to west virginia. >> hi. thank you for being here. it's great to be home. >> but the story became controversial, because the account of lynch aggressively firing back against enemy captors had been exaggerated by the government. in fact, lynch had been knocked out during the ambush. in 2007 she testified before congress. >> the bottom line is the american people are capable of determining their own hero. ideals for heroes. they don't need to be told elaborate lies. >> while jessica lynch continued the grueling road to recovery,

she earned two degrees. in 2007 she also became a mother to dakota ann, named after her best friend who didn't survive the ambush in iraq. >> jessica lynch joins us now. good morning. good to see you. >> thank you. >> we love seeing dakota ann, 8 years old. how's she doing? >> she's doing wonderful. she's kind of upset she had to go to school this morning and not be able to watch it. >> we kind of watched you grow up before our eyes. one of the things i like about you is you always just tell it like it is. i know the recovery has been hard. the physical recovery, let's just start there. you have had 22 operations and you are still in pain. >> i'm still in physical therapy, too. i'm still every day, i go at least two to three times a week, depending on what my schedule allows and work really hard at just trying to keep up the strength and the mobility and i'm so fortunate to have such a good p.t. team that keeps working with me and allows me to

continue to get better. >> somehow you have managed to have a baby and a family, get two degrees. i know you teach, you speak. how is life treating you these days? >> it's been crazy. its abe's been a very hectic li. it's always been about the military and how i can still give back and make sure we continue to support our troops that are overseas. i'm very fortunate and very lucky and blessed that i have been able to do the things that i have been able to do, such as the schooling, the education, because that was one of my main reasons of going into the military was to be a kindergarten teacher. so yeah, it's been a crazy, hectic past 12 years. >> i know there have been good days and there have been bad days. >> yes. >> even just recently, you know, you talked about seeing a therapist and working through some of these emotional issues. how is that going? are you surprised that those terrors are still with you to

this day? >> yeah. i mean, it's getting a little bit better. having somebody besides family and friends to talk to, a therapist, an actual therapist that kind of knows what some of these other troops are still going through, you know, be able to just kind of lay it all out there for her, it's been an amazing healing process for me. but yeah, i still have the nightmares, i still am dealing with a lot of the pain that goes with the traumatic injuries, you know, the leftover. but i think it's just one day at a time and still working with it. >> one thing that kind of surprised me to read that you told our producer is that there are still people out there that are skeptical about what happened and the story, and you said it as clearly as you can. what do you even do with that at this point? >> you know, really, because that's one -- that's been one of my biggest struggles is handling the whole criticism that has come with the backlash of the stories that were created, those fabricated stories, and even

though i came out and i told the truth and i tried to do my best to set the record straight and make sure that the ones that were in my unit such as sergeant patrick miller that actually did a lot of the killing, i want to make sure that the people that deserve the credit gets the credit. and not me, who was knocked unconscious and didn't even get to fire off a shot. it's just kind of amazing that even 12 years later, those stories that were created, those fabricated stories, are still, you know, being targeted at me like you know, somehow i had something to do with those stories, that i created them, that i, you know, and i'm like no, no, i was just a soldier in the same unit with all these other -- i'm just hoping to survive. >> i think when people see you, see how well you're doing and hear your story once again, i think they will be really touched. jessica, it's great to catch up with you. thank you so much.

declared a hoax by police. this morning the victims plan to sue the city. back in march today these huskins and her boyfriend say kidnappers abducted huskins and demanded money. two days later, huskins turned unsafe in huntington beach hours before the ransom was due. months after police questioned their story, matthew mullen was arrested for committing the crime. the suit says the city made false accusations against the couple.

taking a look at the headlines. your mortgage, car loan and credit card rates may have a lot riding on the federal reserve. today, the fed announces whether it'll raise short-term interest rates for the first time in seven years. economists aren't sure what the fed will do, but if rates go up, an increase is likely to be small, for now. a study in south korea finds antibacterial soap is no more effective at killing germs than regular soap. researchers looked at the soap on 20 strains of bacteria and found no significant difference in its ability to kill germs than plain soap. the lead researcher says it is more important for people to wash their hands correctly and frequently than to worry about

makes them believe it's all about them. >> let's get to your tips to combat this. let's start with what's to expect more. >> our kids are more capable than we give them credit for. we need to expect them to -- toddlers to teens to contribute every day. family contributions that they are responsible for, and expect them to take on more responsibility down the road. they'll learn life skills and be happier for it. when kids tribute, they're happy about that. >> you say that means doing chores and adding to whatever it is that needs to be done around the house. >> absolutely. those are all really important. then one of the other strategies we have to think about is giving up on giving in. so often, parents say yes when they really should say no. we do that because we don't want the battle. we need to stop that and have the courage to say no. we'll have to put up with pouting and disappointment in the short term, but in the long term, it'll teach the kids they don't get what they want because they whine enough. >> handing over the reigns.

>> every time we rescue our kids or we intervene on their behalf, we rob them of the opportunity to take responsibility for themselves. figure things out, maybe face a scary situation. little by little, they stop trying. we need to hand over the reigns and let our kids be responsible. it's their job to remember their homework. we want to role play, how they can have a conversation with a teacher about a grade or with the coach about more playing time. we'll be there to support, but it's their responsibility. >> i love this next one. you say it's time for parents to shut down the atm. what is the best way? i've wondered about this. setting up an allowance for your kid. i pay my son $1 a day if he makes his bed and does everything i want him to do. >> the thing we want to stay away from is handing over $5 and $10 every time they ask. a weekly allowance is important. we want to make sure they have a list of expenses they're responsible for. little kids cover toys and treats when they go to the store. older kids budget their
