forth during a q&a in new hampshire. >> we have a problem in this country. it's called muslims. we know our current president is one. >> right. >> you know he's not even an american. >> we need this question, this first question. >> but anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us. >> mm-hmm. >> that's my question. when can we get rid of them? >> we'll be looking at a lot of different things and a lot of people are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad thing are happening out there. >> reporter: trump, who helped lead the birther movement in 2011 never corrected the man by pointing out that president obama is a christian born in the u.s. and he never pushed back against the statement muslims are a problem. the republican presidential front-runner didn't answer our questions as he left, but later his campaign framed trump's response around religious freedom, telling nbc christians need support in this country. their religious liberty is at stake. when we pressed, a spokeswoman

added mr. trump was referring to the need to protect christians' religious liberties, as his previous statement says and nothing more. the moment echoing one from the 2008 campaign that ended differently when john mccain drew praise for stopping a supporter who called president obama, quote, an arab. >> no, ma'am, no, ma'am. he's a -- he's a decent family man, citizen that i just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. >> at trump's rally, some distanced themselves. is that who trump supporters are? >> no, no, not at all. >> reporter: and online a potential rival attacked. hillary clinton calling it disturbing and just plain wrong trump didn't denounce his questioner adding cut it out. trump's birther past has not been much of a factor in this campaign so far. trump himself staying silent on all this overnight, matt and savannah, but look for this muslim moment to come up potentially when trump speaks to

conservatives later today in south carolina. >> all right. hallie, thank you very much. >> new jersey's governor, chris christie is here right now. he's running for republican presidential nomination. governor, good to see you. good morning. >> good to be back. >> does a candidate for president, in this case the republican front-runner, have a responsibility to shut down a supporter when the supporter erroneously says that the president's not an american, that he's muslim and then goes on to say we have a problem in this country. it's called muslims. does mr. trump need to apologize to the president and to muslims ? >> he's got to decide what he wants to do for himself but would i tell you that if somebody at one of my town hall meetings said something like that i would say that and say the president was a christian and was born in this country. those two things are self-evident. >> do you think it would be right for mr. trump to apologize to muslims this morning? >> listen, i think it's -- donald trump's got to decide as we've seen, said this all along. he's got to decide how serious a candidate he wants to be and how he handles different problems like this are going to determine that in the eyes of the american people. i'm not going to lecture him about what to do and i'll tell

you what i would do, if somebody permitted that and brought that up at a town hall, listen, before we answer, let's clear some things up for the rest of the audience and you have an obligation as a leader to do that. >> you want to be the general election nominee. is trump doing long-term damage to the republican brand if he's insulting muslims, latinos, women, veterans, prisoners of war? i mean, do you worry about the effect this is having for long-term prospects of the republican party? >> i don't, savannah, but a in the end what's going to matter is who is the nominee of the party. the party's standard bearer, the person who winds up holding in his or her hands the burden and the opportunity of defining the republican party, and so we're a long way from that. being ahead in the polls, as i've said many times in september, doesn't mean you'll be standing on the stage in cleveland in july so let's see what happens between now and july and then we can probably answer that question a lot better. >> seems so hard for anyone to get attention these days. i looked at that stage the other night, governor. all those podiums. how do you get from the podium

on the end to a podium closer to the center? how do you break out? >> listen, i just think you keep being yourself, matt. if you try to be somebody else, the voters get that, and they detect a lack of authenticity. they detect if you're trying too haar. be yourself, and that's what i tried to do at debate on wednesday. i don't know, had nine or ten minutes of time in the three hours, but the fact is that i think people got to see a bit of who i am on a broader national stage and you'll see things start to happen from there but it's a long slog. i love folks who say to you all the time, you know this, running for the presidency is a marathon and then they say what are your poll numbers today? well, come on. it's a marathon. it means we won't have any kind of even inkling of what's going to happen for four or five months. >> all right. we'll do a little lightning round, if we could, all right. >> do you think the government is going to shut down over de-funding planned parenthood? >> probably not. >> joe biden, is he going to run for president? >> i hope he does. >> what about pope francis,

would you consider him a transformative pope? >> we'll see. certainly his attitude, the way he has dealt with the church in the beginning and with the faithful has the potential to be transformative. john paul ii was transformative. we learned that over a period of time. i think we'll learn move about the pope. look forward to seeing him last next week. >> ahmed mohamed, the young man who brought the homemade clock to school. did the school overreact? >> that's a tough and touchy thing. obvious that they did when you look at facts, but we also know we live in extraordinarily dangerous times and people are really concerned, and that's part of what i've been talking about on the campaign trail. the president hasn't met the burden of making people feel safe and so you're going to have instances like this that are a problem. >> governor chris christie. governor, good to have you. >> happy to be back and this is really quite something, to be sitting up here. amazing. i feel like big-time now. this is great. >> like matt lauer. >> no, no, no. please, please, stop, stop. i'm not nearly that famous?

governor, good to see you. let's talk about the democrats. hillary clinton hitting back at another republican to candidate carly fiorina. she went after clinton several times during the debate. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on that. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. carly fiorina, the only woman in the republican race, lit up the debate stage by partly targeting hillary clinton, the most famous woman in american politics. >> oh, i'm just thrilled to be with you. >> reporter: hillary clinton in new hampshire firing back at the republicans for their debate. >> lots of bickering, lots of personal, you know, insults, attacks. >> reporter: it was carly fiorina who had the sharpest edge, challenging clinton over the controversial videos released by an activist group, purporting to exposed planned parenthood. >> i dare hillary clinton, barack obama to watch these tapes. watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to

harvest its brain. >> reporter: clinton responded on cnn. >> i think we ought to be very clear that planned parenthood has served to provide health care, necessary health care for millions of women. >> reporter: and in a letter to fiorina the women's health group . in the letter the women's health care told her your claims are completely false claiming the videos were heavily edited the -- fiorina is standing by her comments. she has cast hes as clinton's chief -- on the debate stage she set the stage of secretary debate. >> if anybody's interested there's a long list about what i have done and i'm very proud of it. >> with clinton trailing vermont

in parts of england yesterday we saw isolated records. today i say we'll tie some records. new york the record is 90 degrees. these are temperatures running about 10-20 degrees above average. it's exceptional heat that's going to stick around through the day today before the cold front moves in. look at the difference through the weekend. monday 73 degrees. new york mid-80s down to the mid-70s on monday. even though we're going to start to see things cool off we're going to be above average and taking us into october temperatures should be staying on the warmer side. >> dylan, thank you very much. >> officials say that at least

and failing to report a crime. he's accused of killing nine african american church members. janet indicates a rate hike is this year. general motors agreed to pay a $900 million fine for concealing a deadly emission defect to at least 169 deaths despite evidence that gm's legal and engineering staff failed to disclose the problem for nearly a decade. gm says they'll spend another $570 million. brightening moments thursday when a school bus full of kids

plunged near a florida pond. the bus was taking children home from an elementary school when it ran right off the road, overturned in the water and witnesses raced to rescue the 27 kids from the bus and someone said children got to safety. remarkably, despite the video there were no serious injuries there. and week two of the nfl season got off to an incredible start thursday night. a finish everybody is talking about. denver trailed by a touchdown. peyton manning through a 19 yard td pass. overtime, not so fast. on the first place running back the ball charles fumbled and denver picked it up, ran it back for the game winning touchdown.

that they needed to escape, and when we sat down with joyce at the clinton county jail, she told me that sweat and matt were also planning something much more sinister. >> mr. matt wanted me to give my husband some pills to knock him out. >> they called your husband -- >> the glitch. >> the glitch. >> meaning he was the glitch in the plan? >> yes. >> and he had to be disposed of. >> yes. >> i knew i was in so far that i had to just keep going along with it, so when mr. matt brought me the pills they were in my drawer at work, and -- and i took them home and i flushed them. >> david sweat after his capture told authorities that it was your idea to kill lyle. >> it was not my idea. it was matt's idea. >> now they are telling you can go live once you get out, the three of you will go off and live a new life? >> yes. >> did it sound good to you? >> when they started that, like i said, i knew i was in way over

my head so i just started playing along and letting them believe that that's what was going to happen. i was just so scared. mr. matt has a lot of power, a lot of power. he could get whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. >> you even felt outside of prison that he could have caused harm to lyle and your family outside the walls of that prison? >> yes. >> when did they pick a night, pick a date that the escape would happen? >> he just happened to come in one day and said tonight 's the night and when he said that i just stayed away from him the rest of the day because it's like i don't want to hear about it. >> what were you supposed to do on the night of the escape? what was your part of the plan in. >> i was supposed to come up and park by the manhole that they were going to be coming out of, and i was supposed to pretend

that i was making a phone call while they were coming out. i was supposed to bring clothes for them. i was supposed to bring a tent. i was supposed to bring a shot gun. >> he wanted to saw that of course, right? >> yes. >> did you have a shotgun? >> we do own a shotgun, but i had no intentions of ever bringing it. i had no intentions of ever showing up. >> and then the plan was to get them changed, get them in the car. >> yes. >> you would have drugged lyle, the glitch. >> yes. >> he would have been passed out at home. >> yes. >> and what did they say they were going to do? >> at first matt said that he was going to go back and take care of lyle. he was going to kill lyle and that -- i couldn't let them kill my husband. there's no way. >> you keep saying, you know, i love my husband. >> i do love my husband. >> i couldn't let anything happen to my husband, and it's hard to believe. >> i know it's hard to believe,

but i do love my husband, and i've always loved my husband. i was going through a point in my life, a lot of people go through depression. a lot of people go through that and i just got in over my head and i couldn't get out, and i -- i couldn't tell anybody. i couldn't tell my husband, couldn't tell anybody. i couldn't tell my co-workers, i couldn't tell anybody. there's nobody you can tell. >> he had a complete control of you, in your opinion, at that point. >> yes. he was -- he was good at that. >> you went home from work that day, and i know this part of the story because i talked to your husband about it. he said you were clearly not yourself when you got home from work that day. >> no, i wasn't. >> what happened? >> i was scared because i knew

that was the night that it was going to happen and i was -- i didn't really know what to do and i ended up having a panic attack and my husband did take me to the hospital and i did spend the night in the hospital and the next morning when i turned my cell phone on, of course, hi tons of messages and one was from my son that state police were looking for me so we called, and they said no, we're not looking for you, but then it was work that was looking for us, and they wanted us to come in, and i told them that i was laying in a hospital bed waiting to be released, but when we were released, we did go to the state police. i was not completely honest with the state police at first. >> what did you lie about?

>> about knowing that they had gotten out and the other parts of the story, but the next day my husband and i both went back. i had my husband go out with me, and i started to tell the state police everything, and then the day after that i went back out again on my own and i tried to tell them everything i could, and they told me you help us, we'll help you. >> and to this point have you told them every single thing you know? >> i have told them. >> have you been completely honest? >> i've been completely honest with them. i've told them everything. >> when you heard that they had been successful getting out of prison, that they had escaped and broken out and you knew you weren't there to pick them up the way you had promised, what was your first reaction? >> i was scared to death. >> coming up next. joyce mitchell reveals more about the aftermath of that

>> yes. >> and i'm so grateful to them for popularizing the concept and for starting a global conversation about how we might better break up and really for initiated something that people were unaware of and a whole new possibility for how this might be done. >> and you've now written a whole book about it. i had to laugh. the first book was about finding the love of your life and now your second book is about how to break up. >> well, you know, people change and sometimes they grow apart and sometimes they grow together, but, you know, if -- i'm actually pro marriage, but i'm not pro misery, so if there comes a time when it's the right thing to do for a couple to part ways there's a way to do it where everyone is left happy, whole, healthy and free to move forward with an open and fully healed heart. >> you've got a few tips for us this morning that are drawn from the book so people can get a flavor of it. the first thing you should do if you're breaking up take your heart emotions out of of it. >> it's very hard to do. a lot of us want to aspire to a

good ending but it's very hard to do because our bodies are flooded with flight or fight hormones and break-ups can turn ugly very quickly and one the things to remember is you and your children, if you have them, will be living with the consequences of every action you take and for every choice you make for many years to come so when you want to lash out press the pause button, and instead just ask yourself what am i feeling right now? you're probably feeling a lot of things, sadness, anger, hurt, but you want to name them because that will fin to de-escalate your emotions and put you back into the driver's seat. >> you say people should take personal responsibility. a lot of people might say, well, wait, he did this or that, why do i have to somehow let them off the hook. >> we get very stuck in those stories and partially because they are true. people do behave badly, you know, so even if it was 92% the other person's fault you want to know what your 3% was so that you can trust yourself moving forward to never make these same mistakes again. >> and finally you say don't let

time heal a broken heart. >> i liken a broken heart to a broken leg. we would never just let a broken leg heal on its own accord unless you want your heart to heal too did i fencive and too easley bruised moving forward so you want to be proactive in your own healing process. make an intention to create something positive out of this experience. learn those lessons so that you can have a healthier, happier experience of love moving forward. >> again, the book is called "conscious uncoupling.
