>> police finally catching up to him after a three-week investigation. nbc's gotty schwartz is in arizona this morning where that suspect was taken down. gotty, good morning. >> we are told that arrest happened right here in front of that walmart where the suspect was shopping with his young son. we are also told that the suspect had been followed for a while by investigators. they had been following him throughout the day, until finally the s.w.a.t. team moved in. after a three-week manhunt in phoenix, a s.w.a.t. takedown at walmart. >> they tackled him maybe 10 feet inside the automatic doors and then within 2 minutes, you know, they had him handcuffed

and they were basically walking him out. >> police have arrested the man they think was terrorizing i-10 by shooting at cars and trucks, speeding down the highway. >> tonight, we have made an arrest. >> the initial announcement came in the form of a tweet from the governor, saying, "we got him." investigators are releasing very little about what led them to the 21-year-old leslie merritt jr. investigators say a ballistic evidence from a gun owned by the suspect matches the first four of the shootings. >> the subject is the in custody because the weapons that he owned is forensically linked to these crimes. >> in video posted on what appears to be his facebook page, merritt is seen shooting a gun. >> it appears to look like a bullet hole. in many of the attacks, drivers like robert mcdonald narrowly missed being struck while behind the wheel. >> i came literally 24 to 36 inches from losing my life. >> but even with the arrest, police are still on the lookout. investigators say ballistics only connect the suspect to four

of the 11 confirmed highway shootings in phoenix. that means there could be copy cats still out there this morning. police still asking the public for their help. and tomorrow the suspect is expected in court to face several felony charges, including negligent discharge of a firearm, as well as criminal damage to property and aggravated assault. now, early on, we heard this being called domestic terrorism, but it's still too soon to tell if he'll face any specific terrorism charges. erika, back to you. >> godi schwartz for us this morning. thank you. now to the race for the white house. as republicans and democrats alike slam donald trump for something he did not say this week. the republican front-runner skipped a major gop event last night in south carolina, just about 24 hours after he failed to challenge controversial comments made about president obama. nbc's kristen welker is live at the white house with more. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you. could this be the moment that

deflates the trump balloon? that is the question on everyone's mind this afternoon after the republican front-runner allowed offensive comments about the president and muslims to go unchecked. today, trump and almost every other presidential candidate, are back on the trail for what will be a very busy weekend of campaigning. ten gop hopefuls descending on south carolina friday night, but front runner donald trump was a no-show, canceling last minute. trump's campaign says he wasn't there because trump was closing a business deal if still, the cancellation came on the heels of this controversial moment after a new hampshire town hall thursday. >> we have a problem in this country. it's called muslims. we know our current president is one. you know he's not even american. >> we need this question, this first question. >> reporter: trump was immediately slammed from all sides for failing to correct the false claims about president obama, who is christian and american. >> if someone brought that up at a town hall meeting of mine, i would say, no, listen, before we

prominent democratic party fund-raisers on friday began circulating a letter to encourage vice president joe biden to run. the letter makes no mention of clinton, but it is an indication there are still jitters within the party about her candidacy. now, as for trump, he has yet to address that latest controversy, but that could happen today, when he campaigns in iowa. craig? >> kristen welker for us at the white house this morning. kristen, thank you. a controversial county clerk in county is coming under fire once again this morning for removing her name from marriage licenses and refusing -- and she's refusing to issue to same-sex couples. kim davis did this even after being ordered by a judge not to interfere with the documents. nbc's janet shamlian has more. >> i don't want to be in the spotlight. >> reporter: but this morning, kim davis is back in the spotlight, after returning to her job this week, saying she won't issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. but won't stop her deputies from doing so. >> congratulations. >> thank you. >> any marriage license issued by my office will not be issued

or authorized by me. >> reporter: a judge ordered davis shouldn't interfere with the issuing of licenses to eligible couples. >> the judge's order was very emphatic and very broad. >> reporter: now, deputy clerk brian mason says davis may have violated that order by making modifications to the licenses, including deleting her name and all mention to rowan county. in a court filing friday, mason's attorney contends the changes may have, quote, raised to the level of interference against the court's orders. davis' attorney downplays the concerns, writing, kim davis said monday that her name and title would not appear on the forms and later that same day, the governor said the forms were valid. in a separate filing, the american civil liberties union called into question the altered licenses, saying they'd, quote, create an unconstitutional two-tier system of marriage licenses issued in kentucky. davis was jailed five days for refusing to issue same-sex

officer is at the hospital. the archbishop of boston is offering to bury baby doe, the little girl whose gruesome death is gaining national attention. on friday, authorities identified the toddler as bella ball, after three months after her remains washed up. bella's mother and her mother's boyfriend are under arrest and reportedly blaming each other for the killing. to washington now, where president obama has tapped a longtime pentagon official to be the army's new secretary. if confirmed, he will be the first openly gay leader of a military service. the lead investigator in the bowe bergdahl case says the army sergeant should not go to prison for walking away from his post in afghanistan six years ago. on friday, another defense department witness testified, the army sergeant was tweeted worse than any other american p.o.w. since the vietnam war. bergdahl was held hostage by the taliban for five years before being released in a controversial swap for five

>> we have strong storms to talk about. we have to take this seriously. let's take a look at some video in hillsdale, kansas. this is right on the east coast of kansas, outside of st. louis, missouri. look at that just funnel cloud developing from the sky with some of the storms. there was one minor injury reported from a camp site in that general area and there were several homes and buildings damaged outside of the kansas city area. so really strong storms yesterday. i don't think we'll have that threat today. in fact, this cold front, as it moves eastward, is really fizzling out. but there are pockets of heavier rain, right through buffalo. they moved through erie, pennsylvania, northwestern ohio, seeing some of the heavier downpours right now. and these storms do contain lightning. so stay inside while these storms pass through. this is out ahead of the front, where temperatures will still be about 5 to 15 degrees above average. then the front moves through. and then we'll sag back down into the mid-70s as good saturday morning to you. waking up to cool conditions this morning and clear skies.

"everest" tells the story of the real life and deadly disaster on an expedition to the top of the world's tallest mountain. this morning, one of the women who was on that trip is speaking out. sheinelle is back with that story. >> yes, sandy hill, known back in 1996 as sandy pitman, was lambasted in the aftermath of the disaster. and now how she's talking about how she was portrayed in the book. the movie "everest" has all the makings of a hollywood blockbuster. breathtaking backdrops, a host of fascinating characters, and plenty of drama. >> there's a blizzard on top of the -- >> reporter: the real-life events made headlines 20 years ago. on may 10th, 1996, climbers from two expedition started their final ascent toward the summit of mt. everest when they were hit with a violent storm. eight people were killed in the aftermath. others barely made it out alive. the story is most recognized from jon krakauer's

international best seller, "into thin air." sandy hill, one of the survivors of the disaster, was portrayed in krakauer's book as a diva socialite, who paid her way to the summit. the former fashion editor was completing her goal to become the second american woman to ascend all seven summits. krakauer wrote she brought an espresso machine on the climb and implied that she was carried to the summit by a sherpa. this week she told the "new york post," quote, i was an easy target, and quote, this came from a source who had a vested interest in crafting a dramatic story. a representative for krakauer denied a request for an interview. >> she was an ideal everest client. she was in shape and strong. >> reporter: the 1996 disaster may go down as one of the most storied expeditions, but sadly it's not the deadliest. in 2014, 16 people died in an

pled guilty and maintained this was not a hoax. clear it up. why plead guilty? >> the threat of deportation of my wife was eminent. when that came on the table, i had to take the deal that they proposed to me. my attorney said, richard, it is a 90-day stay. that was a long time for me, but it really went by quickly. >> you understood at the time people thought it was a hoax. you apparently shopped a reality show. and theme songs on the internet. when people come to you and say clearly this was a hoax. how do you answer that? >> it is not a hoax. it is what i do. i invent. we are trying to keep it on the lowdown in the backyard. we didn't want our neighbors seeing us build it. it was a test. when it took off, it became what it did. >> anything you wish you did differently as you look back now? >> no, no. we live a policy in our life

where you don't live on regrets. you become a victim. victims cannot help themselves. we live a life for a reason. >> the boys have a band. when you talk about learning lessons, falcon, what is it like for you? you were 6. people did not know you as falcon heene. they knew you as balloon boy. that thrust you into the spotlight. what did this event do for you as a kid? >> it did make us move on. not just like that, but then we moved on to now we evolved to a band. that's better. >> how did that bring your family together? what did it change for you if you don't live in regret? >> what happened is we discovered how important your kids are. imagine losing one. that is what hit us hard. we became much closer. we would spend more time with the kids. i had a goal when he turned 50,

i would pay attention to the kids. that goal has been moved up by three years. >> you were able to do that? >> i said the heck with it. what do you want to do and they said they wanted to be in a band. guitar, drums and bass and lead vocals. >> how is the band going? >> awesome. we have "american chili." >> any balloons in the musical? >> no. >> rock orchestra. >> do people bring this up? you actually moved and live in a different part of the country. does it come up? >> once and a while it will come up. they will go hey, you are that guy. johnny vegas came up to us. we were at a supermarket. a clerk said they were talking about you. >> my more balloons built? >> not like that. >> all right. nice to have you here. glad are you doing well. thanks for coming in. >> thank you.
