happy saturday morning to you. it's 7:00 and you're getting a live look at the golden gate bridge. beautiful skies ahead of a very warm weekend. thanks so much for joining us. anthony slaughter has a look at our forecast. the last weekend of the summer. >> i know. hopefully. you're ready for it t. this is going to be hot. we're talking about 80s and 90s

even triple digits for the final weekend of summer. it's going to be hazy because of high pressure that's going to be right on top of us. that's what we're looking at this morning. our shot does show clear skies. later on it will be hazy. we're talking about inland temperatures 80s and 90s and moderate air quality. temperatures near 100 degrees tomorrow. if you're like me you're thinking about the beaches. it will be the 80s. temperatures, 47 degrees for the north bay. 50s else where. later on you will notice a difference. inland, hot temperatures, 94 for the north bay. 98 for the trivalley. 90 for the south bay. mid 80s for ineast bay and peninsula and san francisco today not that bad but 80 degrees is warm if san francisco standards, especially if you don't have air conditioning. >> i do not have air conditioning. my friends are visiting from chicago. i told them this is not normal. >> no, it's not.

it's going to be hot until tuesday and temperatures cool off for the first day of fall. we'll talk about that coming up. >> anthony, thanks. we begin with the latest on the valley fire that's burning in lake county. containment has grown to 48% as crews expand control lines. 87,000 acres have burned. 580 homes are destroyed. there is concern this morning that 48% containment could shrink. it's because of the weekend weather that anthony just told us about. temperatures expected to soar. and even worse if firefighters, wind could be an issue. we also are learning the state is pushing for a federal disaster declaration. that would free up money to help fire victims. some of them have spent days in tents. this weekend, finally they'll get to return home to see what's left. fire crews say they're doing their best to help these folks transition. >> there will be a lot of people here for a while. we make it through this weekend with this warm, hot weather.

cooler weather is coming we'll turn the corner and the containment lines will expand and grow. we'll get this under control and get these people home. >> a local assistance center opened in middletown at noon to help people with the paperwork. by the way, the twin pine casino will open a smaller evacuation center closer to town. new information from this fire comes in almost hourly. be sure to check our website. it's a great way to stay on top of the developments. we have a collection of raw video and a slide show. download our free nbc bay area app. new this morning, a deadly accident in an east bay construction zone. an apparent drunk driver crashed. the driver reportedly crossed all lanes on the westbound side of the freeway and hit a tractor. the tractor hit and killed a contract worker. again, this is on interstate 580

at the lake shore avenue exit not far from mcarter buvld. >> the vehicle left the roadway and struck the worker. the worker was thrown 100 feet or so. landed on the ground. in the end, he sustained a fatal injury. >> the driver was not hurt. police say they found open alcohol containers inside the driver's truck. they arrested him for driving under the influence. to some very disturbing video now. fans caught on camera fighting at levi stadium. they are now all under arrest because of this viral video shares thousands of times on youtube and facebook that helped south bay police track down the attackers. it was at monday night's game at levi stadium where four people wearing 49 jerseys attacked a vikings fan. al one of them is a season ticket owner but not anymore.

the team has revoked his seats. these three men were arrested along with a teenage girl. on lookers say alcohol was factor. they say the vikings fan was smack talking 49er fans. >> a bunch of friends coming together and even friends end up fighting once alcohol becomes involved. >> police say they respond to 20 assaults during football games. last year a bathroom brawl there at levi's left one fan with a brain injury. now to pet luma where an incense search is underway after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted in her home. she told investigators a man was waiting for her when she returned to her home yesterday morning. he restrained her, sexually assaulted her, and left on foot. police have been searching the area with the help of k-9's.

neighbors are rattled. they say there are a lot of home stay at home mothers in that area. >> they're out all the time whether walking or running in groups or by themselves. all the moms are very concerned and on high alert. it makes the rest of us with -- the dads or the husbands or any family member incredibly concerned. >> the attacker is described as a white man around six feet tall with a potbelly. defense attorneys are calling it a small victory. three santa clara county correctional deputies accused of beating an inmate to death have been granted bail. $1.5 million each. their attorneys are trying to raise the money needed to get their clients out. this bail ruling comes even as new court documents revealed troubling text messages sent among the deputies. prosecutors claim the text m messages show the beating death was part of a pattern of abuse.

>> in which he boasts he liked working on four to six bay because there were no cameras. you see the gloating from defendant rodriguez. he quote knocked the [ bleep ]. >> we don't know howa thentic they are. >> the deputies will be back in court next month. the man accused of killing kate steinle on pier 14 in san francisco has pleaded not guilty. juan sanchez was charged with murder yesterday. he previously admitted to steinle's death in a jailhouse interview saying he fired the shot that killed the 32-year-old in july. his attorney continued sanchez found the weapon and accidently fired it. sanchez is an undocumented immigrant who had been deported five times prior to the shooting. he was set free by san

outside...... welcome back. it's 9:10. this is a live look at levi sha stadium. the 4.9 stadium run this morning. runners are just about an hour away from the starting gun at 8:15. it was all a hoax. cell phone video shows the police activity at amdore valley high in pleasanton yesterday morning. the school closed before classes officially started because of an

e-mailed bomb threat sent to the principal. school officials immediately cleared the campus and called in police. the bomb squad scoured the campus for hours. the all clear was given before noon. classes were already canceled for the day by then. well, we got him. those are the words from arizona's governor after police finally captured a gunman who had been terrorizing drivers for week. a 21-year-old man was arrested in glendale arizona police would not say how they tracked him down. but they believe he is responsible for shooting at least four of 11 cars that have been hit in the last few weeks. the arrest surprised many people in the community. >> the walmart associate told us can you believe they got the i-10 shooter? >> thankfully no one has died from any of the shootings. at least 15 passengers

aboard philippine airlines were hurt last night after their plane hit turbulence. they felt the plane suddenly jolt. we're told the passengers who had not fastened their seat belts were the ones who were injured. all of the injuries reported were minor. we have a much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, a brand-new way to buy current apple products this morning. plus, rumors abound on what may be next on the horizon. no fog this morning. we're talking about clear sky and warm temperatures later on this afternoon. even some of us may break the century mark before the weekend's done. we'll break it down coming up.

some triple digits across the bay area this weekend. the last weekend of summer. many of us are about to get an upgrade when it comes to credit card security. many bank and credit card companies are sending out replacement cards. it's an attempt to stop credit card fraud. europe and canada have been using the new technology for years. it's cut fraud by 80%. retailers are supposed to have installed new card readers by october first. many won't be ready. >> it's more complex to replace every single credit card and debt card and merchant payment terminal than what we initially thought. >> retailers who aren't ready will shoeldther liability for any fraud. could your next car be an icar? apple's next big thing could be hitting the road soon. a driverless car. it could create a whole new class of jobs. business and tech reporter scott budman explains.

>> reporter: apple gave us an exclusive look inside its newest store. lots of gadgets and merchandise but nothing about driverless cars. apple is not commenting on those rumors. but we've seen google's car. tesla and uber are rumored to someday go driverless as well. how about apple? >> i tend to be on the side that says i can't believe they're doing a car. >> reporter: with rumors flying, apple watchers do tell us the company will at least develop technology for such a car. >> a lot of speculation has come through comments that have made and people that apple have hired that suggested apple is doing something on the automobile. >> reporter: if they do. >> if a lot of people start buying these things, we could have a lot of jobs. >> reporter: jobs. not just building cars, but fixing them, too. >> the people who fix those have to be more technical.

we're talking 80s and 90s inland and moderate air quality because of that fire burning. as we head through tomorrow, temperatures get warmer, you want to find the beach. 80s be at the beach. we're talking 90s and triple digits across the bay area. all weekend long. this is your forecast for today. 90 degrees for the south bay. 88 for the peninsula. mid 80s expected for the east bay. san francisco will see a warm day, 80 expected there. 94 for the north bay. the trivalley will see a hot day. we're talking temperatures near 100 degrees. 98 there. expect another hot day for tomorrow. and if you're doing any traveling across the state this weekend, good conditions. no monsoonal moisture, just clear skies. tahoe, 82. las vegas, 96. palm springs will be 105. we have high pressure that's in control of our weather. as you like at the satellite and radar not a whole lot happening. the storm track across the

pacific northwest that's where it stays. here at home, getting a closer look at our winds you'll notice the fire burning north our winds this weekend directly out of the north. that will mean for hazy conditions. moderate air quality expected across the entire bay this weekend from the north bay to the south bay. it gets worse for tomorrow. if you have any respiratory ailments, you want to make sure you limit your time out doors. pacifica is 74. 80 expected for half moon bay later on this afternoon. look at the water temperature, mid 60s for this time of year, unbelievable. santa cruz, 83. winds will be light. tomorrow, there is a big thing happening. 2015 comedy day at the park. i believe it's the 33ered annual. we're talking about temperatures in the mid 80s. you have a huge lineup of comedians. not myself, not this year.

temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s. the storm track is to our north that will change as we head over the next couple days. for this weekend, not so much. look at this, two areas of low pressure, one to our north, one to our south, those will start to move in as we head towards monday and tuesday. for us it won't bring rain, it will reinforce the cool air. the sea breeze will return as we head to the first full day of autumn which starts on wednesday. the temperatures is -- the calendar matches the numbers. 90 degrees for today for san jose. 90 for tomorrow. tuesday and wednesday kboback i the low 80s. san francisco, 83 tomorrow, by tuesday and wednesday, the return of 60s. fall right on track with mother nature. >> how can you not love that? anthony, thanks. we have more on today in the bay

school... the numbers are sobering.. one-third of the students drop out. only 1 in 10 .... go to a four-year at an east bay high school, one 3rd of students drop out. one in ten go to a four year college. a group of students at richmond high is bucking the trend. today in the bay's garben thomas tells us about the man bemind had success. >> there was a day a decade ago when this man sat in a room of student. he asked how many wanted to go to college. 30 raised their hands. he asked how many thought they would go, only two kept them up. it was a powerful moment he has turned into a powerful response.

there's a field in free mont, an empty lot that is about to be transformed by brad blake. >> it's going to have 30,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and services. >> it's not the first project this real estate developer has over seen. it's also not the only kind of transformation brad's been involved in lately. that part of his story, it turns out, also starts with a field. the richmond high school soccer field one night ten years ago. >> winter 2005, an ncs boy's soccer game. >> the underdog won the match on what some called a fluke goal. the visiting fans knowing of richmond's tough reputation, were worried what the home team's reaction would be. they shouldn't have been. back in danville, brad heard

what happened. >> as i walked off the field, the richmond parents and players started applauding them. said congratulations. good luck in the next round. >> the danville soccer community was so impressed with that sportsmanship, they donated $2,000 to the richmond program. brad says, he then offered donations of equipment to the richmond coach. >> he said you know these kids in our program need is hope. >> did you get credit for that? >> and that, for the past ten years is just what brad has been giving them. that exchange you see, ultimately led brad to create college is real. a counseling tutoring mentoring program run as richmond high school. all this, even though brad had no background in education. >> yeah, it wasn't about education. it was about hope, motivation. it was about being ail to bring resources to bear. >> looking at the numbers, it's

also about success. in a school with 30% drop out, 100% of college is real students graduate. and where only 10% of the student body go on to four year colleges, 90% of college is real students do. >> when i walked in this room i didn't think anything was possible for me. now i'm on my way getting ready to go to college. >> brad says the key has always been a simple one. they are not trying to change the students, simply changing their perception of what's possible and then watching their lives change as a result of it. >> when i see how their parents and families respond to seeing their child, it's probably the first one in their family ever to go to college, and the gratitude they have and the emotion they display, it's pretty rewarding. >> the program is not only successful, but it's growing. the first year about a decade

preaching the gausal about being inclusive. for hutchinson, preaching during this time of distress is the only way to get through it. >> i still have my faith. my career has been taken away per se. my paycheck as i would say. >> reporter: now, reverend hutchinson married his partner days after that dismissal in july. he tells me he hopes this issue of the minister's sexuality within the united methodist church is addressed at the general conference in 2016. reporting from alameda. the pope will be here in the u.s. before we know it. but first he's headed to cuba. pope francis' flight took off from rome this morning. he's set to land in havana tonight. he will be the third pontiff to visit the island nation where he's expected to meet the cuban president. cuban catholics prays and sang yesterday as they wait for his visit. the pope will be in cuba until

activity headed up to seattle and portland. for us here at home, it's all about the winds the next couple of days. our winds have shifted, now they're out of the north. that's going to bring in hazy conditions from the fire burning up near lake county. so expect moderate air quality for today and worse air quality expected for tomorrow. if you suffer from respiratory ailments, definitely want to limit your time out doors. couple that with hot conditions with 90s and triple digits, definitely the recipe for disaster if you suffer from respiratory ailments. the beach, it's going to be nice. 74 for pacifica. 80 for half moon bay. water temperatures are in the mid 60s. 83 in santa cruz. winds will be out of the north. other things happening across the barks tomorrow the comedy day at the park tomorrow. temperatures will be low 80s.

fog free conditions. we have the area of high pressure across the pacific another across the southwest. both of those have shut off our storm door. there's an area of low pressure that's going to start to form to our south. that's going to at least reinforce our cool air and bring back the sea breeze we're used to seeing. temperatures are expected to cool by tuesday about ten greens from where they'll be at this weekend. the inland valleys will be in the 70s and 80s by tuesday and wednesday. if you haven't heard autumn begins on wednesday, september 23rd. as the calendar starts to flip over our days get shorter. that will make for cooler weather each and every day as we head towards the full final last day of summer. you notice by the temperature pattern here, 90 for san jose, 93 for tomorrow. look at that as we head towards monday tuesday and wednesday. temperatures start to cool off. even for the east bay valleys, you'll be near 100 degrees this weekend, closer to 80 as we head

r. a whale has been found. ancient whale bounds more than 500 feet above sea level. archeologists and locals are all buzzing. today in the bay's michelle roberts has more. >> reporter: if i were standing in this spot four million years ago i'd be standing on the ocean floor. it's being turned into a neighborhood. construction has stopped giving scientists the opportunity to excavate an ancient whale that's been trapped in the rock. >> the digging is the fun way. >> reporter: scott armstrong has been putting in 12 hours days surrounded by construction crews paid to build single family homes in the santa cruz mountains. he and a small team of paleontologist are working to unearth a four million-year-old whale. >> part of the skull is over here. >> reporter: it's 25 feet long. >> more skull pieces here. got a shoulder blade over here. >> reporter: because of the shape of the jaw, armstrong already knows it used to survive

on plankton. the species is a mystery. the team has covered the bones with plaster to hold it in place. >> it will probably be about an inch thick. >> reporter: they call it a jacket. armstrong says this is the first four million-year-old whale found in this area. >> a slice of time and space that hasn't really been looked at. >> reporter: the bones are incased in rock. that's how it will leave its bay area resting place. >> the bones have been preserved in that sediment for four million years. so the best way to transport it is leave it in that sediment. >> reporter: before scientists in southern california get a closer look at the ancient creature, i asked armstrong if he has any prediction. >> it's an ancestor of something. >> reporter: scientists will be finished at this location in a couple of weeks. eventually the whale will be on display in a california museum.

remarkable. >> jeremy is the first official san francisco arts commission city hall artist in residence. >> he left his colorful thumb print around san francisco. >> i think that san francisco city hall is one of the land marks in this town that gets overlooked. come on, look at that thing. >> reporter: since there was no president for an official artist in residence there was no official place for an artist in residence to work. >> i was like can i have an office? >> he asked city hall if he could have a office. >> i would have phone in case i wanted to make calls. >> reporter: they found him space here. >> it happens to be in a little space surrounded by an incredible amount of historical ephemus ru. >> reporter: which is a fancy way of staying. >> i'm in a storage closet.
