>> mike inouye keeping an eye on the roads. kari, it will be cooler. >> it will be cooler. but today we have to deal with the sizzle, once again. 55 degree in the north bay and 64 degrees in the east bay. here is a look at those highs. 95 in the north bay and south bay 85 in san francisco. the east bay 87. tri-valley up to 100 degrees and 92 degrees today in the peninsula. and i'll show you just how cool it gets as we go through the middle of the workweek. that's coming up. lets see what's happening o. the roads with mike. >> kari, it's really jammed right here. folks, if you're traveling this area down through danville and san ramon a deadly crash right here. al costa, you're clear. but in the backup another crash coming out of danville and just going to be slow in general as traffic builds out of concord and down through walnut creek interchange. so far, things are okay. san ramon valley boulevard is one alternate.

pretty much your only alternate, but a tough drive for that portion. meanwhile, the upper east shore maintains a difficult build and the earlier crash in san francisco. 101 at cesar chavez and recovery down towards 280. rest of the bay behaving pretty normally. live look from the foster city of the mateo bridge. steady stream of lights that looks like it is blown up. a steady build over to the peninsula. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new this morning. frightened drivers and passengers thought it was gunfire. their windshield shattered from something that seemed to fall right from the sky. all happened as they drove on 280 in san francisco overnight. >> chuck coppela is live in the peninsula. the chp says theses were bottles or rocks maybe thrown from an overpass. >> scott, we justed with the chp and both chp and police investigators say it's most likely bottles that were causing most of the damage when these two incidents were happening. happened on the northbound i-280

extension into the city just before midnight. just before where the ucf children's hospital is located. two overpasses just before mariposa street where a taxi was struck with tourists who had just arrived at sfo that were heading into the city for their first night here. >> we just got off straight off the airport and first thing that happens. welcome to san francisco. >> so loud that the parties have reported it as to be a bullet. but once we got on scene and after speaking with the drivers, we established that some objects other than bullets because the physical evidence shows that those are not bullets. >> the police and the chp know of at least two vehicles that were struck. both windshields were smashed. luckily the drivers kept control of their vehicles. but it's the kind of crime that could be felony charges brought, if intent to cause injury is

proven. so far police have arrested no one and are hoping for tips. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola. more devastation this morning as the valley fire continues to grow north of napa. the fire now 76,000 acres destroyed more than 1,000 homes and 6,500 home are still in the path of the flames. it's growing, but it's 70% contained. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in calistoga. others have no home to go back to. >> that's the sad reality,a and scott, for so many people whaare still living here at the evacuation center over a week later. where they are getting ready to to prepare for breakfast. others can start returning at 5:00 tonight and going back to places and bonanza springs. this is very welcome news as more people were allowed back home this weekend. not 24 hours ago families were allowed to return to the area

and grange road and pge crews were still trying to fix fire lines there. many acknowledge it will be a struggle to rebuild, but the people around them that made everything so much better. >> nobody, lake county has a bad r repwe're a family. >> also this weekend people were allowed to go back to middletown where a water boil notice is in effect. evacuations may move into middletown and the twin pine casino allowing most evacuees to be closer to home. as for schools, all in kelseyville returned to class. just minutes ago the scene of the calistoga athletic booster club was serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to people here. hundreds in the evacuation center and we're told this breakfast will be the very last one because it has been told the volunteers have been told by the

mayor here that they need to consolidate and move it all to one kitchen but they said this is really going to impact how many people can be fed. you can see even as people are allowed back home, still a lot going on in places like the evacuation center and people still trying to help their neighbors. live here in calistoga. >> hats off to that booster club. the worst fire ever in terms of number of structures damaged or destroyed was the oakland hills fire, of course, back in '91. it destroyed 2900 buildings and killed 25 people. in the meantime, firefighters battling the tas sajara. authorities are calling the death suspicious. the fire is burning near the town of jamesburg started saturday burning 1,200 acres and today sheriff deputies plan to escort some of the people who were vacuated back into their neighborhood to see if they have anything to go back home to.

the fire is 30% contained. for updates on the ta sajara wildfire and any other wildfiring throughout our state, just download our nbc bay area app. happening today the father of maddy middleton will hold the rally just before the teenager accused of killing his daughter heads to court. adrian gonzalez is charged with murdering maddy six weeks ago a few blocks from his home. her father is calling on the community to join him outside the courthouse to keep the focus on maddy. gonzalez is expected to enter a plea of charges of murder, kidnapping and sexual assault. a brand-new charter school in south bay is closed this morning amid accusations the school did not properly background check its staff. it followed the arrest of a teacher's aide accused of molesting a little girl. "today in the bay" kris sanchez in sunnyvale and this school

just opened last month. >> the first day of the school being open, lara, was august 18th and fast forward about a month's time later. a staff member was arrested for molesting an 8-year-old student on campus. now, the district had a special board meeting last night to approve the principal's decision to close the school temporarily. the notice of that meeting may read it was the principal's decision, but it really is by order of the santa clara county office of education that granted the school charter contingent upon proper background checks and fingerprinting of staff. within the first month of the school's operation, that 18-year-old teacher's aide and lunchroom worker molested an 8-year-old girl on campus. jonathan chow was arraigned on friday on charges of molestation and child pornography and that's when the county office of education learned that the charter school had not met that requirement of fingerprinting and background checking all employees. that's according to the "mercury news." the school has 160 students from

kindergarten through sixth grade and at this point it's unclear when they will return to class. we have reached outto the school board members, as well as the schools and the county office of education. find out why there wasn't a mechanism in place to trigger notifications to the county office of education that the requirements, the background requirements were not met here at spark academy. we are waiting to hear back, but are certainly going to be digging on this one later today. in sunnyvale, kris sanchez. the search continues this morning for a person suspected of armed robbery at an east bay gas station. the suspect used a handgun to rob the grand gasoline store on c ontra costa boulevard. the cashier told police the gunman got away with cash and the chp helicopter searched the area, but did not find the suspect. 6:08 and monday morning getting your workweek kicked off with a lot of heat coming to the bay area. >> kari joining us with promises

of better days to come. >> but not today, unfortunately. here's a look at the highs yesterday. it was sizzling all across the bay. 99 degrees in napa, san francisco 93 degrees and oakland 94. livermore up to 102 and redwood city 98. mid-90s for the south bay and richmond set a new report of 96 degrees and gilroy also a new record of 104. back to 98 degrees in gilroy. still be hot and outer sunset at 78 degrees coming down a lot there. and in fairfield, 100 degrees. antioch 99 degrees. in pleasanton reaching 97 degrees. still hot today, but much better as we go throughout the rest of the week. i'll detail in less than ten minutes and right now mike is tracking a crash in the tri-valley. >> deadly crash and it's going to cause a big backup, as well, for the commute. not only a tragedy as far as the

people involved are concerned and a bad news for the morning commute, as well. a crash on the right side in the backup as you're approaching the left lanes that are blocked. only the slow lane opened. out of danville. look the chopper continues to show the headlights and we'll show you the amount of the backup from danville and you're clear and san ramon valley boulevard likely seeing more surface street traffic and your only aul trtinate for 680. fortunately just seeing the traffic build in and all these folks will be met with a very slow drive. this likely won't clear until 7:00. we heard no estimates from chp. that's my own guess based on the activity we see. freeway and hercules a fender bender and causing more slowing as you're heading in towards richmond and the build is on heading towards the berkeley curve. the north bay and the peninsula moves smoothly, as well. take you to the south and northbound routes are just starting to kick in and fender

anybody can go, although your ticket will cost $3,000. it's very popular who's who in tech all gathered in san francisco. countdown clock there you see it kicks off in just a couple of hours and with disrupt comes the disrupt hackathon over the weekend. 700 hackers gathered to build a product in under 24 hours. the winner, quick actions created a button to use shortcuts on their android phones. apple on damage control. this morning apple says it's removing a number of apps from its app store because of hackers. the hackers duped some developers of chinese apps using fake software to build the amps. the bad software would then collect and steal users private data. cybersecurity firms say no evidence personal data has been stolen. word from apple to find out what users should do if their apps are affected. netflixers upset they couldn't round out their weekend

by binging on their favorite shows. amazon hosts servers for all kinds of websites in the cloud suffered annage for five hours yesterday morning. affected netflix and readit and tinder and others. the issue at it cloud facility in virginia are to blame. >> what do you do without that binge watching? maybe clean the beach. a wedding ring, urn and a yoga mat just a few items collected during the coastal cleanup. the "oakland tribune" reports they collected more than 341,000 pounds of trash and almost 50,000 pounds of recyclables. the coastal commission said that's equal to nearly 14 school buses worth of junk. cleared from our waterways. if you're wondering about that wedding ring, it's being held by park rangers in hopes of finding the owner. >> i always appreciate that, school buses?

>> timely. everybody is back to school. >> speaking of, a lot of traffic on the road, but wear shorts to school. >> yeah. it's going to be hot again today. and even this morning, many of us step out the door and you don't even need a jacket unless you're in the north bay. it's cool there. as we get a live look right now. you see a nice, calm wind in san francisco and the clear skies, too. and the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. so, you'll see that it will be today and then feeling much more comfortable as we go through the week. it is 65 degrees now in concord and in hayward and sunnyvale at 67 degrees and in san jose 67 degrees and not much of a wind today and that will make it still feel very hot. our temperatures heating up quickly as we go through the morning and early afternoon. won't be until later on this evening. here we are at 4:00. the wind turns onshore and we will have the winds picking up to 15 to 20 miles an hour in some spots. so, through most of the day with

the light, hot temperatures and ozone levels will continue to go up. and the air quality will be unhealthy in many spots like the east bay, as well as the south bay and approaching the moderate levels for the north bay and the peninsula. so, a spare the air day. you want to reduce carbon emissions by carpooling and bike if you can. the high up to 95 degrees today in san jose and 94 in palo alto and the financial district reaching 85 degrees and 87 in oakland and san ramon and 96 degrees. we will have a little bit of some fog approaching the coastal areas and the golden gate bridge and that's where temperatures will be cooler. the rest of us that onshore flow and the fog won't be enough to cool us off inland but not be the case as we go through the rest of the week. a stronger flow will in much cooler air and also the morning clouds and the fog back as it goes through the rest of the week. we officially begin fall on

wednesday and it will feel like it. 58 degrees in san jose after starting the week at 95. much more comfortable temperatures going through the rest of the week. also in the tri-valley. up to 100 degrees today. and then having 80s for the rest of the week will feel so much better. especially compared to that weather we had over the weekend. now, let's check in now with mike who has been tracking a lot of problems this morning. >> the most unfortunate part of my job is i have to report things like what is going on over here. chp on the freeway 680 southbound completely closed right now. no lanes are getting through southbound as chopper zooms out. the reason is there is a deadly crash and the investigation continues here. we had one lane open but now we have this traffic backed up heading down. and it's jammed up coming out of danville. no real good alternate except for san ramon valley boulevard. look at all these folks trying

to get on to the freeway. there's your backup. let me show you the map. it's jammed for south 680 coming into the area but once you're south of el costa all the traffic is behind you and traffic is light behind the interchange. aside from the deadly crash here, the rest of the bay shows a typical build and not so bad for this monday as you come down the east shore freeway and where the metering lights are on. bay shore boulevard coming up pastillestick causing a little distraction and over here a slow drive building for south 88 through hayward and south bay and northbound routes just starting to kick in. the earlier crash, 80 at 17 has cleared without much incident there. again, the big jam is south out of danville and san ramon and currently stopped all traffic at bolinger canyon road. san francisco giants announcer mike krukow has given to fans and now asking for their support. talk about inclusion body

cities in the country-- and in palo alto, business is growing fa b it is one of the weltiest cities in the country and in palo alto business growing fast. the housing market can't keep up with the commercial building boom leaving many workers with no place to live. now, the city council is meeting tonight to discuss plans to establish a 50,000 square foot cap on commercial development in that downtown area. right now, palo alot has three workers for every resident. they hope a limit on office development will make room for more housing developments. could pull the plug this week on the ambitious coliseum city plan according to the chronicles, despite years of planning and $3.5 million in research, the project really hit a wall for good. nobody can be convinced to fund that, which would have turned the coliseum into a huge sports

showing a nice, easy drive until you get down. look at that chp has been having a traffic break for about 10, 12 minutes now. full blockage for southbound 680 and this is causing a huge back backup. show you coming into danville and the area. smoother drive until you get into danville and then you're jammed up there. my early estimate was 7:00 and told they could have those lanes open ands like they're waiting for a sweeper. more details from cmp and, again, we'll show you that update. meanwhile, not a lot of good alterna alternates. concord and walnut creek heading down into the area. fortunately, the rest of the east bay shows a typical drive. your slower build 880 through hayward and down towards fremont. typical pattern there, guys. >> thank you very much, much. more devastation to tell you about this morning as the valley fire continues to grow north of napa. the fire is now nearly 76,000

acres destroyed more than 1,000 homes. 6,500 more are still in the path of those flames. firefighters have surrounded almost 75% of the fire and they stopped a lot of it from the spread. >> stephanie chuang is live in calistoga and a lot of those people are able to go back to their homes. >> that is set to happen at 5:00 tonight and the third day in a row that people were able to go back home to places like middletown, as well. here at the evacuation center fewer tents and people. this is, by the way, the last breakfast served by the boosters club here. now, the senior center in middletown has become a one-stop shop for food, water, cleaning up, insurance and replacing birth certificates lost in the fire. part of the rebuilding also includes going back to school for students and those schools resume class today. the hope is that middletown schools will be open again

starting thursday. lake county sending out a reminder that all families have the right to enroll their kids where living temporarily. we learned that the clitoga athletics club and leading to many emotions this morning for some of the volunteers. >> the outpouring of support that we got from the community of calstoga is huge. and i hope the people that were evacuated here know that we did it for them. them alone. >> and you see people gathered. they're told not to cook any more. it came some stress with food getting turned away. see some of the brown bags. they have packed up food and they're asking evacuees, as they're heading back home today for the rest of the week to take these bags with them. the water and that will definitely help them in terms of

trying to move forward. so that when they get pack to their home whether they're standing or not, they will have food, at least, that they can rely on. still a lot of emotions coming this morning not just from the victims themselves but the people who have become friend with them. >> stephanie, investigators are trying to figure out if a person found dead in monterey county died in that fire or committed suicide. the body was found at the spot where investigators think the tassajara fire started saturday near the town of jamesburg. the fire burned more than 1,000 acres and destroyed ten homes. monterey county sheriff department said it wasn't sure if the death was an accident or something more. the cause of that fire under investigation, as well. this morning the people who have been evacuated are waiting anxiously to see if their homes are okay. deputies will escort them home later today. for updates on the wildfire and all the other fires burning throughout the state, you can download our nbc bay area app.

new this morning, drivers and passengers thought it was gunfire. their windshield shattered by something that seem to fall right from the sky. it all happened as they drove on 280 in san francisco overnight. >> live in san francisco and these things were likely bottles thrown from an overpass. >> good morning, scott. right now these two incidents are still being investigated. they happened just before midnight. since then, nothing has been reported after the chp and san francisco police sent officers to the area to investigate. two overpasses. that go over the interstate 280 extension. northbound 280 extension near mariposa street in san francisco. at least two vehicles suffered damage to their windshields. the chp and san francisco police say it's likely bottles caused most of the damage. not exactly the best first impression made on tourists in their taxi that was struck. >> quite an impact and we pulled

over and people behind us pulled over, too. they have damage, too. >> have not found anybody. if anybody has any information please call, 1-800-call-chp. all the public help is appreciated. >> the crimes is a misdemeanor in california. fortunately, no one was injured. both drivers were able to pull their cars off of the highway safely. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola. it is 6:36. a plan to alter alcohol sales at levi stadium may be in the works following another brutal fan beating caught on video. the santa clara stadium will meet tomorrow to discuss safety concerns. city council members are spear heading an effort to cut off alcohol sales after halftime. it comes after three men and a teenager were arrested in connection with the brutal assault of a vikings fan after last monday night's game. now, last year a bathroom brawl

left one fan with a brain injury. police say alcohol played a role in both cases. a brand-new charter school in the south bay is closed this morning amid accusations the school did not properly background check its staff that follows the arrest of a teacher's aide accused of molesting a student. "today in the bay" kris sanchez live in sunnyvale. the school just opened. the school just opened and was not supposed to open without the proper background checks and fingerprinting for all of the staff and that's why the school is now closed today. it was approved by a special board meeting just last night. the notice reads that it was by the principal's decision that the school is closed, but it really is by order of the sant clara office of education which granted the school charter. again, that charrer is contingent upon proper background checks and fingerprinter. within the first month of the school's operation a lunchroom employee and teacher's aide was arrested for molesting an 8-year-old student on campus. jonathan chow was arraigned on

again. some mid to upper 90s for the south bay. palo alto 94 degrees and san francisco 94 degrees in the financial district and santa rosa up to 93 today. antioch 96 and 99 in san ramon. after one more hot day, once again, it will be much cooler the rest of the week. i'll show you those numbers and what to expect coming up in a few minutes. see what's happening on the roads now with mike. >> kari, looking towards 680 southbound where we have the scene of the crash. look at all the emergency vehicles. this is the first of the scene here. over on the right side and it's blocking the on ramp and actually the two most damaged cars were in this area. deadly crash we continue to follow while we follow the story of what exactly happened. i need to tell you about the commute. folks are weaving through this area and look how far the jam is on the map. southbound 680 through tdanvill and backing up on the approach. you're okay.

things are much clearer for you there. traffic build as folks coming out of walnut creek and concord and heading south on 680 and no update from chp and i thought this would be clear by 7:00. looking up the east shoreway standard build towards the bay bridge backed up because the metering lights are on there. no additional incidents there and surprising south through hayward. we do have a little brush fire on the side of southbound 101. i saw smoke on our live kamg rubut that cleared up very quickly and we're tracking that. in this weather, also concerned about any small fire. >> you're right, thank you, mike. coming up, presidential hopeful donald trump still leads the polls. plus, opening the door. how the u.s. is stepping in to help thousands of syrian immigrants caught in the middle of war. we take you out to the big board. boy, do we have a lousy. we're making up for it a bit today. dow industrials gaining 100

across the bay area. really got its grip on us. >> fall officially begins this wednesday. it is waiting until that last minute before the heat wants to get out of here. as we take a live look now from san bruno mountain over san francisco. it is a clear start to the day. and, also, nice and mild. it will be warming up, once again, seven-day forecast is now up at the bottom of the screen. today the peak of the heat for the week and then it gets much more comfortable. it's 67 degrees now in the peninsula and 68 degrees in san francisco. the north bay walking out the door to 55 degrees. today highs in the mid-90s in the north bay and south bay. 92 degrees in the peninsula. bay at 87 and the tri-valley still up to 100 degrees today. san francisco 85 degrees. not much of a wind either. we'll have a mostly calm wind coming out of the north for most of the day. then when the onshore breeze kicks in, it will stay cooler along the coast and the inland

areas won't get much relief until later on today. winds 10 to 15 miles per hour in some spots. also, if you have to spend time outside if you're working outdoors and if you have breathing problems, you may want to limit time out there in the east bay, as well as the south bay. peninsula and the north bay. having moderate air quality today. so, officials say spare the air. bike or carpool, if you can or use public transportation. after the heat today in san francisco, we see much cooler air moving in the rest of the week. it is going to be nice. and even in the south bay, we go from 95 degrees today to 81 degrees tomorrow. and that continues through the rest of the week. some more seasonable temperatures in the tri-valley. a high of 100 degrees today. and then back into the mid-80s for the rest of the week. mostly sunny skies, much more of a breeze. and that stays with us as we head into the weekend. so, if you can make it through today, the rest of the week will

chp is looking for whoever threw something at cars along the busy bay area freeway. >> chuck cappola and chp saying these are probable bottles from an overpass on 280. >> again confirm that it was not gunfire that happened however commuters coming into san francisco on the northbound 280 extension into the city might want to be a little extra aware of the two overpasses at mariposa street. those sites are where someone was throwing bottles and struck a taxi with passengers inside who just arrived at sfo australia. another vehicle was hit, sustaining even more damage to its windshield. both incidents happened just before midnight. fortunately, neither driver lost control of their car. now, the chp and san francisco police are appelooking for tips. crimes of misdemeanor but in

california it could be a felony if intent to cause injury is proven. i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." the father of 8-year-old maddy middleten will hold a rally just the teenager accused of killing his daughter heads to court. 15-year-old adrian gonzalez charged with murdering maddy six weeks ago a few feet from her home. maddy's father is calling on the community to join him outside the courthouse to help him keep the focus on maddy. gonzalez who lived near the middletons is expected to ina plea of charges of murder, kidnapping and sexual assault. it is 6:56. a brand south bay charter school is shut down this morning so the school can finish background checks on all of its employees. this after a teacher's aide was arrested for molesting a little girl. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez live in sunnyvale. we don't know why the school opened in the first place without finishing those background checks. >> that is a very good question. we're trying to figure out

whether or not there is a mechanism to trigger notification to the county office of education that a charter school is not in compliance to open the doors. what we can tell you a special board meeting held on the blacktop here last night to honor the principal's request to close the school. now, the notice says it was at the principal's request, but it really is by order of the santa clara county office of education which granted the school charter contingent on background checks and fingerprint. a lunchroom monitor and teacher's aide is charged with molesting 8-year-old girl on campus last tuesday. the school has 160 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. at this point it is unclear when they will return to class. tonight's regularly scheduled board meeting is set for 6:30 tonight. there is a public comment session. we expect it will be active. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." to the growing valley fire. as of right now flames have
