now. thank you for staying with us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's start out with meteorologist anthony slaughter in for kari with a look at the forecast. >> we are looking at clear skies this morning. temperatures are going to warm rapidly later on this afternoon under sunny skies, which you're going to notice here. it's going to be hot. much hotter than it has been the last couple days. we're talking about the return of 90s for some places like the north bay. 76 for san francisco today. up to 84 for the east bay. the south bay will be close to 90. and the tri-valley into the mid 90s. we are expecting to cool down for the weekend. in the meantime, let's toss things to mike. >> we're looking over here to a standard morning at the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. westbound 580, right at 90, it sounds like everything's cleared, but i'm going to leave

it there for the time being. that is an issue as a lot more folks are heading over there. we zoom toward the tri-valley and we have a smooth drive. i do see some flashing lights approaching. there's temporary slowing. watch for that. meanwhile, in the south bay, we do have a build for the live camera. northbound 101 showing a pretty steady flow of traffic. a burst of traffic did come up through the area, so they're slowing from 680 up to about 880. back to you. new this morning, these are the massive flames firefighters were up against when they first arrived on scene of a house fire burning in alamo overnight. take a look at this. it's from the helmet cam of a contra costa county firefighter. the fire started around 1:30 this morning on crest avenue. crews found electrical wires dangling and flames coming out of every door and every window of that house. fortunately, a woman who was living inside the home got out safely. nobody was injured. there's no word yet on a cause. be aware. that is a warning for police in the east bay after a suspicious

green van is spotted lurking around elementary schools. the driver attempting to lure in children. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo live in alameda where police are trying to piece everything together. damian? >> reporter: good morning. that is a concern this morning here in alameda, and also in the city of berkley. they believe a green van has been cruising around schools in both cities over the last week and trying to lure those children into the van. so the alert is out this morning. the driver of that green van was allegedly trying to lure the kids inside. the latest incident here at bridges elementary happened last week. police say the green van cruised by the school on september 18th. 20 minutes later, similar reports from two other schools in berkley. these were described as attempted kidnappings near willard elementary. alameda police are still trying to verify if the two incidents are related in both cities, but detectives want families to keep their guard up and look out for a green van. >> it makes you more cautious.

you know, keep an eye out. yeah. not just for my kids, but other kids. >> reporter: berkley police describe their suspect as latino between 30 and 40 years old, dark hair, a mustache, heavy set, and wearing a hat. at this point, alameda police are not confirming if their suspect here actually tried to kidnap any children. we're live in alameda. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." very frightening. today, students are going to gather at archbishop mitty high school to accepted thesend thei and prayers to a student who was hit by a car. kris sanchez is there where the 14-year-old boy is in critical condition this morning. >> reporter: certainly, his classmates are praying for a miracle as he is here at the intensive care unit. the students, his classmates are going to gather at archbishop mitty high school this morning and in the true spirit of their catholic school, they are going

to pray for their classmate. according to san jose police, the 14-year-old was running on the sidewalk in front of mitty high when he ran onto the street behind a jeep that was headed in the same direction. and then police say they don't know why, but he ran into the other lane of traffic where he was hit by an oncoming car. sadly, it happened just before 3:30 in the afternoon, so there were lots of witnesses out there in front of the school. police investigators say it's unclear why he was in the street and why he didn't use the crosswalk. >> anybody hit in such a manner, it's so easy to avoid that because there's a crosswalk right there that could have been utilized, but it wasn't. >> reporter: now police say the driver who struck the teenager is a young woman herself, and she is cooperating fully with the investigation. according to an e-mail, which a student shared with us, the school built in time for prayer at the beginning of the school day. students are going to band together and pray at school, but they've also been working together via social media and

they're planning to wear white in honor of their classmate. we have been asked to respect the students' privacy at school, and we are going to honor that request. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, kris. it is 6:05. investigators say three bodies found near sacramento are likely connected to a missing bay area family. a couple and their 7-year-old son had not been heard from since september 11th. the family was supposed to be spending a weekend at their cabin near auburn. now we're learning three bodies were found in the cabin, which was destroyed by fire. the missing are adam and molly buchanan and their son gavin. police have questioned family members and taken items from the family's home and their construction business. >> the family is coping as best as they can. carrying on with the business, carrying on, taking care of the remaining son. >> the buchanans also have a 16-year-old son, he did not go to the cabin with the rest of his family. at 6:05, a break in a

high-profile burglary and animal abuse case. fremont police arrested 21-year-old valdo diaz of oakland. they believe he's one of two men who burglarized a fremont home in late august. this video shows the suspects were throwing food and dog treats on to grass from a shattered door they used to get in. marley, the family dog ended up cutting her mouth and throat while she was eating it. she has since recovered. police say they're still looking for a second suspect. a robbery on the peninsula, not for money, but for prescription drugs. a pharmacist was taken hostage at a walgreens. the suspect seen right here robbed a walgreens on 41st avenue near el camino in san mateo. this happened on tuesday afternoon. police say the man jumped the counter, held the female pharmacist at knifepoint. once he got the drugs that he wanted, he calmly walked back out of the store. police say the suspect has a reddish tattoo near his right eye, and possibly more tattoos

on the back of his hand. it is 6:06. new this morning, the one-time owner of two san francisco restaurants may face prison time after being arraigned on criminal charges. u.s. attorneys and the department of labor say grand jurors have charged a former owner of two hong kong lounge restaurants, each located on geary in the richmond district. he's accused of underpaying employees by more than $90,000 in overtime and then making threats against them. he's also accused of lying to federal agents. if convicted, he may face 25 years in prison. that tab for the bay bridge just keeps getting bigger. caltrans now says fixing those troublesome anchor rods on the eastern span of the bay bridge could top $15 million. toll payers are likely going to be the ones footing most of the bill. engineers say the steel rods were supposed to -- or were exposed to salt water, because the contractor failed to adequately seal them. the risk of corrosion has led to months of studies and delays in putting the finishing touches on

the span. officials say future repairs could drag well into next year. it's been a makeshift home for hundreds of valley fire evacuees, but today the temporary shelter at the napa county fairgrounds will close. that means a lot of people who lost their homes will have to find somewhere else to go. people have been leaving the fairgrounds all week, some going back to their homes, others to hotels or to stay with relatives. in the meantime, officials confirmed a fourth person has been found dead in the burn zone. searchers found the body of robert fletcher inside a burned home near cobb. the valley fire has also destroyed more than 1,200 homes and hundreds of other structures. the fire is now 82% contained. fema is now on site, urging people who lost their homes or businesses to register with them so they can try to start that recovery process. today, the san francisco zoo is hosting a free day for 50 kids affected by the valley fire. hopefully it will serve as a bit of fun in the midst of a big disaster. >> and lift up their spirits for sure. we're going to get a check

of the weather as we edge toward the weekend. >> it's going to be a nice day for the zoo. temperatures at the coastline along the peninsula near 80 degrees, so not that hot. the inland valleys are going to be really warm. we're waking up to clear skies this morning. you can see we are looking at fog-free conditions. sunrise at 6:57. we are going to see a rapid warm-up later on this afternoon with temperatures into the 80s and 90s in our inland valley. 70s at the coastline. and we'll be clear as our sunsets around 8:02. it's beginnigoing to be warm. saratoga at 91. san francisco, low to mid 70s from ocean beach over towards stoma. in the north bay, santa rosa at 90. concord 91. a good mix of mid 90s for the tri-valley. into the weekend, temperatures do cool off. we'll show you some events happening across the bay area and talk about that lunar eclipse i told you about. in the meantime, let's see how

the roads are moving. >> not very well at the bay bridge toll plaza, but that's because the metering lights are on. flashing lights behind me. i think they cleared that crash 580 at 24. everything moves smoothly through the maze. the headlights coming toward me, the volume continues to build. eastbound as road crews are clearing. let me show you the map. some slowing over the last 20 minutes. they should be just about clear from the area, but we'll still keep that there. westbound, your commute standard flow. working toward the rest of the bay, we did just get reports of a crash, west 92 heading toward the san mateo bridge toll plaza. chp should get there any second, but a little slowing. that looks pretty standard. on the peninsula, an easy drive. southbound 280, we're watching reports of a deer or a tiger in the lanes. chp is going to check out whether that's a tiger. i think they should also check out who called that in. >> maybe a big cat. coming up, not just your personal information, but now your fingerprint in the hands of hackers. >> the head of china, the

names. addresses and social security numbers. hackers also reportedly got their hands on 5.6 million fingerprints. it was accessed during the same data breach that affected 22 million government employees this spring the agency screens and hires federal workers. right now, not much can be done with the stolen fingerprint records, but the government says that could change over time, depending on new technology. >> president xi's visit also includes a visit with high-tech leaders who were worried about the chinese making copies of their product. scott mcgrew, they call it c to c. >> c to c is copy to china. intellectual property rights, one of several subjects that came up as president xi met with all kinds of tech leaders. a real who's who, including mark zuckerberg there. really all kinds of tech leaders. the scope of this is really extraordinary. the chinese president meeting with our high-tech leaders before our political leaders

and near 90 degrees for the south bay. high pressure in control of our weather today and tomorrow, but look at the cold front off the coast lean -- coastline. we are going to see a few high thin clouds, bringing rain for them. unfortunately, nothing for us until about this weekend. that's when we're going to notice the cooling as this cold front moves through. it's going to wash out, though. it will drop our temperatures five to ten degrees, especially as we start the next workweek, and another one moves in on its heels, dropping our temperatures even more. we were talking about some running more. maybe you're participating in the san jose rock 'n' roll marathon happening this weekend. temperatures are expected to be cool to start the day, but eventually warming into the 80s on saturday. same deal for sunday. it's a two-day marathon, if you didn't know. temperatures back into the low 80s as we head towards sunday afternoon. also happening this weekend, something astronomical. talking about the supermoon lunar eclipse. this is when the earth will pass between the sun and the moon and it's going to create the red hue

investigation. the man arrested for spraying anti-chinese graffiti in a san francisco neighborhood could find out today if he's going to stand try. 62-year-old john skinoni of san francisco is being charged with vandalism and committing a hate crime. he'll appear in court this morning for a preliminary hearing. police say he spray painted the words "no more chinese" in several spots over labor day weekend. it is quarter to 7:00. uber is expanding. the ride-sharing company opening up shop in oakland. the company purchased the former sears building downtown. nearly 3,000 employees will work out of that office. that will make uber one of the city's largest employers. uber is expected to move in sometime in 2017. uber's san francisco headquarters will also expand to house more employees. the nasdaq bell rang this morning as it always does in times square in new york city. >> but scott mcgrew, by the end of the day, the nasdaq will have shifted west. >> that's right. sign of the times, right? the center of power continues to move our way. this is the sometimes square

see the return from cold. maybe head up to sonoma wine country. back into the 70s by sunday. headed towards monterrey, maybe doing whale watching. perfect time of year to do that. temperatures falling back into the 60s by sunday and over towards santa cruz. the boardwalk will be nice and toasty. temperatures falling back into the mid 70s across saturday and sunday. temperatures do cool off, as i mentioned. saturday and sunday, that's when we're expecting cooling. but tomorrow, still another hot day. san francisco, you'll be back into the low to upper 60s as we head towards sunday. let's check that drive. >> we're going to see how tightly everything has tied together for our bay area commute. the san mateo bridge -- look, it's pleasantly light over on the peninsula side. that's because of a big issue on the east bay. folks, let's look at the map. if you're heading to the san mateo bridge from the east bay, you're jammed up because of a crash in your two middle lanes there. that's got traffic jammed up to 880. there's also another crash south 880 right around 238, and that's in lanes that's jamming you up.

out of oakland, down through hayward, continuing past the san mateo bridge. folks may then head toward the dunbarton bridge. also some folks may be heading north up to the bay bridge. although oakland is showing a smoother drive past the coliseum. we may see more traffic flow shifting over there as well. we don't know when these two crashes are going to clear. i'm hoping over the next 20 minutes, but we'll track it closely. they've got to clear those cars and they're waiting for those tow trucks. we're looking at the southbound continuing to build. likely unaffected by the east bay, but getting down here on 880 and possibly even 680 might have a shift in traffic flow, so there may be a different flow through fremont. reportedly, mike, there's just too much noise in atherton. people are complaining about it regarding the increased air traffic at the san carlos airport. san jose mercury news reports the board of supervisors voted to create a subcommittee to find ways to address the concern.

it comes after community members wrote strongly worded letters to the atherton city council earlier this month. we're not the only ones stressed out right now about california's drought. new research shows some of the state's most iconic trees are showing signs of stress because of a lack of water. giant secoyas have dead or thinning trees, products scientists of the drought. the trees can live for more than 3,000 years and grow nearly 300 feet tall. scientists hope the data they collected will help them figure out how to save the trees while water is scarce. it's not budget cuts causing a peninsula library to shut its doors, it's bedbugs. the mitchell park library in palo alto will be closed for several days while exterminators try to get rid of those pests. bedbugs were found in two chairs on the first floor, which has since been cordoned off from the public. the building is closed, so pest control can treat that area. as an added precaution, the city is sending special bedbug

they found electrical wires down and flames coming out of every door and window of the house. they say they had no choice to let it burn for a while. fortunately, a woman inside the home got out safely, and no one was hurt. also in the east bay, police warning families to be alert after several reports of a man driving near schools and trying to lure kids inside of his van. >> quite frightening. damian trujillo live in alameda with the story. damian? >> reporter: good morning. there is concern here in alameda and in the city of berkley, the concern is that this suspicious van may be targeting children in both of the cities here in the east bay. so the alert is out this morning for parents. the driver of that green van was allegedly trying to lure kids inside. the latest incident here at bridges elementary happened last week. police say the green van cruised by the school on september 18th. 20 minutes later, similar reports from another school in berkley. these were described as attempted kidnappings near willard elementary. berkley police described their suspect as latino, between 30 and 40 years old, dark hair, a

mustache, heavy set and wearing a hat. extra caution is advised for students this morning. we're live in alameda, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you, damian. students in san jose's archbishop mitty high school will wear white today in honor of their freshman classmate who was hit by a car yesterday. the incident happened right outside the school. >> kris sanchez is live where the 14-year-old boy is in critical condition. >> reporter: he is in the intensive care unit this morning, but his classmates will gather at a vigil at their high school in about an hour to pray for him in the true spirit of that catholic high school. according to san jose police, the 14-year-old was running on the sidewalk in front of the high school when he ran into the street behind a jeep headed in the same direction, then police say he darted into traffic in the other direction. they don't know why. we're going to hand it back to you now for a special report. the pope is set to address congress for the first time ever. nbc news has been following this throughout the course of the

room. chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." he is at the capitol. what are those politicians expecting to hear? >> i think some of them are going to like what they hear, and some of them aren't. i mean, this isn't a pope that easily fits into our red/blue prism that we sometimes talk about politics. i think he's going to be challenging each side. i mean, he's going to be challenging the left when it comes to moral issues, whether it's on abortion or on marriage. he's going to be challenging the right on some social justice issues, including you're going to hear him talk a little bit about climate. but also the refugee crisis. so this is -- not surprisingly, the pope is going to be very principled about this through his prism of how he defines all things having to do with life. and i don't mean that just on the issue of abortion, but when you throw in all of those things, the planning, the refugees, he's going to talk about the conflicts in the middle east in terms of saying

it's our responsibility to be worrying about these issues. so look, i think he's going to be challenging everybody in that room in a way that's going to make them all feel a little bit uncomfortable, even as they may feel comfortable on other issues. about these issues. look, he'll challenge everybody in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable even as they feel comfortable on other issues. >> we look around the room, speaker boehner there, vice president biden, members of the president's cabinet. they have been introduced and walked into the room. there are certain ground rules that have been put into effect. kelly o'donnell is insue the chamber. >> reporter: unlike the state of the union where you had members who would be reaching into the aisle, trying to have a moment with the president of the united states, today, different rules for decorum. you have members who are on that aisle who have been instructed by leadership not to interfere, not to try to have that moment with the holy father.
