from nbc bay area, this is today in the bay. >> good saturday morning. 7:00, a live look outside san jose. it's going to be a beautiful day. good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm michelle roberts. anthony slaughter tells me we're going to get a break to the heat. fall is coming, you say? >> yes, tomorrow. still going to be warm in the valley today, so don't expect it to be much cooler today. as you look at the coastline,

san francisco you can see the fog rolling on in this morning with the naked eye. don't even have to watch it on the time lapse. it is cool this morning, temperatures near the 50s, 60 degrees. thing you'll notice today is the coastline will see the cooling. 74 degrees for san francisco. but still warm, 90 degrees. same for the south bay, near 90 there, as well. east bay and peninsula mid 80s. expecting a cool down for tomorrow, san francisco back into the 60s tomorrow and quite a bit of cloud cover through the day tomorrow. keep in mind if you want to get outside and enjoy sunshine, today's the day to do it because tomorrow more cloud cover and as we move towards october, the next couple of days temperatures getting cooler. that coming up in the full forecast. >> thanks, anthony. tech workers feeling targeted. this comes after hateful text messages started to appear in san francisco. flyers and graffiti making fun of tech workers, some blaming them for rising housing costs and evictions and some even threatening violence. >> i've been a techie for 15

years. i take umbrage toit. i kind of get it. >> san francisco city leaders say they are working to ease the tension by focusing on building more affordable housing. police say they are working to remove the messages and as a safety precaution, many tech workers say they are leaving computer bags and clothes with company logos at home to avoid standing out in public. we have a follow up on a story we told you about earlier this week. the south bay student who was hit by a car and sent to the hospital has died. the san jose mercury news reports lucas angelou, freshman at archbishop mitty high school passed away last night. police say the 14 year old was running across the street after school that day when he was struck. they say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash. a quick thinking neighbor helped get everyone out of this

burning building in san francisco last night. calls for help came around 7:30 as firefighters arrived, a neighbor kicked in the door and told people to get out. the cause of the fire is under investigation. happening today, the silicon valley is buzzing in anticipation for the arrival of the prime minister of india. prime minister modi is scheduled to land in san jose around 11:30 this morning. on his agenda, visits with local members of congress and business leaders, including facebook ceo mark zuckerberg. he will also be speaking to a sold out crowd on sunday at the sap center. and many people say they want to hear mr. modi's initiative to create tech jobs. >> we can help india and they can help us. it's all about exchanging information. it's a shared economy. >> this is the first time in nearly 40 years that an indian prime minister has visited the bay area. however, not everyone is thrilled with his upcoming

appearance. >> we do want american business to flourish, but not at the cost of the religious freedom of the minority. >> the prime minister will face some protesters outside the shark tank on sunday. they say he's accused of violating human rights, such as forcing people to convert religion. our own raj mathai will be hosting part of sunday night's program with the prime minister and mr. modi will head to new york on monday where he'll meet with president obama. the sap center is going to be a very popular place tomorrow with the rock and roll half marathon taking place nearby and will start right before the prime minister's speech. the map shows the course that's right around the shark tank. thousands of runners usually park at the sap center, but that's not an option this year. more than a dozen streets will be closed due to the race, and if you are heading downtown, make sure you plan ahead tomorrow. well, who will replace one of the top politicians in the

country? that's the question after house speaker john boehner announced he's stepping down next month. >> i informed my colleagues i will resign from the speakership and congress at the end of october. >> now all eyes are turning to a california republican, kevin mccarthy, is believed to be the leading contender to take the post. some say that would be good news for californians. >> he will bring in six, eight, ten, 12 of his colleagues who don't know california, who don't necessarily know the innovation economy so we can educate each other. >> boehner chose to leave as the government is teetering on another shutdown. much of that uncertainty is centered around an argument to defund planned parenthood. one of the many issues mccarthy would face. the fifth term congressman from bakersfield has not said if he plans to be the next speaker of the house. pope francis has landed in philadelphia. let's take a live look at the benjamin franklin parkway, where

the pope will attend the festival of families tonight. right now the pope is on his way to mass at the basilica of saint peter and paul. before the pope arrived in philadelphia, he became an official new yorker. the pontiff given honorary resident status during his visit to the city. pope francis started his friday with a speech at the united nations. the pope visited the september 11th memorial, where he pray for those who died in the terrorist attack and met with families of the victims. some 80,000 people lined central pank to catch a glimpse of the catholic church. last night the pope's new york trip ended with mass at madison square garden. a bay area family is mourning the loss of their teenaged daughter who was hit and killed by a car. now the family is hoping to prevent a similar tragedy. three months ago 17-year-old aurora machado was running along a sidewalk when a fallen tree blocked her path. she was hit while trying to get

around the tree. and this week her family filed a claim against san rafael, saying the city failed to remove the tree that showed signs of decaying even after neighbors complained. >> this is not something that had to happen. i don't know what else to say. it didn't have to happen, and it did in one of the most pristine parts of our country. >> the family has the right to file a lawsuit. city leaders say they are conducting their own investigation. a widow is mourning the loss of her husband all over again. saratoga police say early yesterday morning two young burglars stole what looked like a jewelry box. the dark mahogany box was filled with something much more personal, the ashes of the victim's husband. >> that really means a lot to her. and, in fact, i think that box may mean everything to our victim at this point, so we really urge those who are responsible for this to turn in the mahogany box.

has more. >> small window. >> reporter: it looked like they did, because when jennifer little got to her oakland apartment on wednesday night, all of her professional camera equipment and hard drives were gone. >> a lot of the stolen hard drives looked like this. they are silver, western digital. >> reporter: the thieves ransacked her apartment, searching everywhere and finding her life's work. >> i lost ten years of work on the hard drive. >> reporter: little is an associate professor of art, all of her extra money and every ounce of free time goes into making documentaries on the water crisis in the desert in the eastern sierra and following poor families in china, projects near and dear to her heart. >> there's a lot of forced migration happening right now because the government's trying to develop the area. >> reporter: little knows she probably won't get the camera equipment back, but what's most important, the hard drives with pictures and interviews that

you're watching today in the bay. >> live look outside right now on this saturday morning. the bay bridge in san francisco, the sun is coming out. at 7:14 is the story we first broke yesterday. the bay area is now part of the volkswagon scandal. two stanford professors have filed a class action lawsuit. the suit claims that vw's

electronics research lab in belmont was involved in testing the cars and knew about the emissions problem. volkswagon has admitted that millions of its diesel cars had software designed to cheat on emissions tests. >> these vehicles that were being tested had emissions 15 to 35 times what was permitted by epa and california regulation. >> the belmont lab declined to comment on any pending litigation. however, officials did say the lab is not involved in the department or creation of parts or systems related to vehicle emissions. laugh as loudly as you want, the so-called wine soul train will be rolling through napa valley today and it's on a mission to prove a point. the soul train is actually a bus and it will stop at african-american and latino-owned wineries. this is in response to what happened on the napa valley wine train last month. a group of african-american women, members of a book club,

were asked to leave for being too loud. >> invited them and the action is both for our own community and for folks to know what the options are out there, to be in a space they feel welcome and participate without recourse. >> one bus will head up this morning from oakland with 35 passengers onboard, and the event is sold out. well, the show will go on with nothing on. a nudge has stepped in to allow a nude parade in san francisco. it's called the nude, of course it is. organizers say a judge ordered city officials to issue the group permit and today they plan to march from jane warner plaza to city hall and they are baring it all to protest the nudity ban san francisco adopted in 2013. and last night in the castro, most say live and let live. >> it's something they believe in, that they are standing up for, that they are fighting for.

whether people agree with it or not, you have to give them credit for, you know, protesting what they believe in. >> protesters are expected to march down market street. san francisco police officers will be escorting the marchers to make sure they can safely express themselves. i have a very important question, will the weather be safe for them? >> yeah, mid 70s, comfortable, room temperature like it would be if you were walking around in your living room. comfortable, yes. >> good news for them. >> this morning we are waking up to fog in spots, even at the coastline. here's that shot, you can see that thin, very thin veil of fog drifting over the city this morning, but overall you can definitely pick out the sunshine and blue sky above it. we are looking at sunshine around the rest of the bay with the exception of daly city. later on through the day, temperatures are going to warm nicely. comfortable again, san francisco 74 degrees today, near 90 for the north bay, mid 80s expected for the east bay. tri-valley will be hot, near 90,

as well. south bay looking at temperatures in the mid to upper 80s today. traveling across the state, sunshine all across the california state, even towards nevada. temperatures back into the 80s for reading. 79 for tahoe today. 100 for las vegas. 77 degrees. will stay hot today, but we have a cold front that's right off the coastline. that's going to move through the day tomorrow, bringing in more cloud cover, but it's not going to bring in rain. just going to continue to wash out as it moves through. once it moves through tomorrow, temperatures drop a bit. then another low pressure develops off the coastline. this cutoff low is going to meander out over open waters, but by tuesday, more cloud cover and cooler conditions. lots of happening this weekend. today, temperatures back into the 60s by about 7:00, 8:00. moving towards the mid 70s by lunchtime. mid 80s by this afternoon and for tomorrow, yes, two-day event. temperatures back in the mid 80s by the afternoon hours.

more cloud cover expected for tomorrow and that leads me to this, 30th annual fog fest happening in pacifica this morning and this afternoon. even for tomorrow, as well. temperatures today back into the upper 60s, lower to mid 60s tomorrow and more cloud cover, even the return of the fog for pacifica for tomorrow. the other interesting thing happening, astronomical event happening tomorrow evening, the supermoon is expected to make an appearance. it's going to be a lunar eclipse with that also. red hue on to the moon. what happens is you get the sun and the moon and the earth right in between it. that's going to cast the reddish hue across the moon tomorrow evening from about 7:00 to about 8:30 is when you can view that. keep in mind, we are talking about the return of fog at the coastline tomorrow. san francisco, not the best visibility. get away from the coastline, that's where you're going to see better conditions to view the moon. cold front that's going to move through tomorrow bringing in cloud cover, same for monday and tuesday, temperatures back into

80s today, upper 70s for monday, tuesday, and wednesday. east bay valley close to 90 today. look at the cooling trend, temperatures closer to 80. no rain in the forecast. the other thing to keep in mind, san francisco mid 70s today, low 70s for tomorrow. then start off the work week we're talking about temperatures back into the 60s as we move towards the first full week of october. hopefully putting some rain on the forecast as we move into the official kickoff of rain season. back over to you. >> about time. thank you. much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, saying good-bye after leading a new frontier. we're taking a trip to the old west in this morning's bay area proud.

the 60's and 70's, you might remeber "frontier if you grew up in the bay area in the '50s and '60s, you might remember frontier village. the amusement park closed in

1980, the early victim of the rising price of land in silicon valley. while the park is gone, its spirit is not. today in the bay's garvin thomas has today's bay area proud. >> shaughnessy mcgee could take up days telling you about the great things about frontier village. the stage coach, the gun fight, the antique car rides, but for the past two decades he's decided to show instead of tell. it's a show, it turns out, that's about to close. if shaughnessy mcgee ever builds a time machine -- >> this is one of the maps that they had. >> reporter: there are two things of which we are quite sure. first, is where he would go. >> the main entrance is here. >> reporter: second is that it would have to seat more than one. >> here i've got a replica of the silver dollar saloon. >> reporter: because what good is having a passion, shaughnessy believes, if you just keep it to yourself. >> the biggest thing is, i wanted to share it with people.

yeah, it's my backyard, but i feel like a caretaker. i wanted to replicate the suspension bridge that they had, so i went ahead and made my own. >> reporter: what shaughnessy is caretaking are his and thousands of others childhood memories of frontier village. a san jose amusement park that closed in 1980. shaughnessy figures as a kid he visited fewer than ten times, it made a powerful impression. >> you know, and i used to spend all night just dreaming about being there and riding the rides and getting to see different things. this is my favorite building that i did. >> reporter: so powerful that 20 years ago shaughnessy started building an homage to frontier village in his backyard. ten years after that, he started buying original artifacts from the park and incorporating them in his display. always opening it up to anyone wishing for a trip down memory lane. >> and that's where the real reward is, is being here when it's full of people and just watching their faces.

>> reporter: but just as the real frontier village didn't last forever, neither will this one. the loss of his mother and a job has shaughnessy and his wife to sell their home and move to oregon. >> it's finally setting in that, you know, i feel like the whole park is closing again. come on in, we have hot dogs and beans over there you can have. >> reporter: but not without sharing it one more time. shaughnessy opening the doors this past weekend to anyone hoping for a taste of the past. >> it's a trip down memory lane. it's just awesome. >> it's amazing. >> thanks. >> reporter: throughout the day, the smiles shaughnessy saw made him smile even more. and the stories people shared with him just confirmed what he already knew, that memories often last longer than the materials they are made of. and when they are such great memories, that's a good thing.

woman in his san jose home. he says the sex was consensual. surveillance cameras in mcdonald's home may have captured what happened the night the woman claims she was raped. >> are there videotapes that depict the couple having sex the next day? if that's true, that doesn't mean what occurred the night before was consensual, but it's certainly going to make it very difficult for the prosecution. >> mcdonald was released by the niners and then by the chicago bears after the indictment. the grand jury also indicted ahmad brooks of misdemeanor sexual battery stemming from the same night involving the same woman. if convicted, brooks would have to register as a sex offender, which could end his football career. it's up to governor brown now, will he keep the golden gate bridge free of charge for pedestrians and cyclists? you're looking at live pictures of the bridge this morning. a toll bill is now headed to the

governor's desk. it would keep all bay area bridges free for pedestrians and bike riders until 2021. last october bridge officials started looking into the possibility of charging foot traffic. some tourists we spoke to say a new toll would stop them from walking across. >> i would think probably a coin donation maybe would be okay. maybe a fee would make me think twice whether i shouldn't walk it or take a picture from afar. >> yesterday several local legislators gathered at the iconic span to urge the governor to sign the bill. no word from the governor's office on his plans. california now has the toughest carbon emissions standard in the country. the state air resource board has unanimously approved the new regulations on fuel emissions. the rules call for a 10% reduction in carbon emissions for all fuel sold in the state within the next five years. air officials are now targeting

transportation fuels because they say california's cars produce about 40% of the state's pollution. >> so we need to improve vehicle technologies, we need to reduce vehicles miles traveled and the low carbon fuel standard goes directly at the fuel and makes them less polluting. >> oil producers warn this type of regulation will result in some of the highest gas prices in the country. air resource officials say the extra cost is expected to be minimal, as low as $4 per consumer per year. new regulation takes effect next january. pope francis is now at the final destination of his american tour this morning. here's a live look at the basilica of the saints peter and paul in philadelphia. the pope arrived about an hour ago and is holding mass at the cathedral right now. here's nbc's jay gray. >> reporter: as pope francis left new york, crowds began to line the streets in

families, a celebration that will include a performance by italian tenor andre bocelli. a community brought to its knees by the devastating valley wildfire is in slightly better spirits as it found a reason to cheer again. the middletown mustangs played their first football game since the fire destroyed more than 40 homes and killed four people in the last two weeks. nbc's tom miller reports. >> reporter: rising from the ashes, they are resilient, magnified under the bright lights. >> means a lot, definitely. >> reporter: coleman drew's family lost everything. >> every single day it's a mission to get through the day. i'll be traveling back and forth to middletown, i have practice, got to help my parents with the trailers. >> reporter: technically a road game for middletown, you wouldn't know it based on the away team's turnout. >> fun for us to be here for the kids, i know if we can continue on as a community, as a town. >> reporter: lower lake is no

stranger to wildfires either and welcomes this neighboring town as family. >> it is the same community. my teachers lost homes, you know, our community lost homes. yes, we're supporting middletown 100%. >> reporter: the team was forced to cancel last week's home game. you can see just how close this fire got to the field, actually singing these containers and destroying some equipment, but it hasn't slowed the desire to keep playing the game. >> getting these kids back on the field is that first step towards normalcy and starting the healing process. >> reporter: with school still out, for some the game is a chance to reconnect. >> tough to see people that have lost their homes, as well, and it happens to be they are here and supporting our school and our town. just seeing that they are okay. >> reporter: win or lose, it's about something bigger. >> even stronger than what we were before. even stronger than what we were before. >> reporter: it's getting back up after being knocked all the way down. middletown remains strong and that alone is reason to cheer.

there is still plenty of although both teams are officially out of contention, there's still plenty of excitement in the battle of the bay. including a highly anticipated matchup this afternoon. more on that in a minute. but last night it was game one of the cross bay rivalry. the a's trailing the giants 2-1 in the third when billy burns hit this two-run homer to the right. then in the sixth, another billy

in green and gold made his mark. billy butler hit this home run to give oakland a 4-2 lead. a's hold on to win game one 5-4. and we're just hours away from the matchup everyone has been talking about, barry zito versus tim hudson at the coliseum. both pitchers plan to retire at the end of the season. the 40-year-old hudson and 37-year-old zito were teammates in oakland from 2000 to 2004. they were part of the big three, which also included retired pitcher mark molder, who will also be there today. and they say they are ready to ride off into the sunset together. >> you know, we're both kind of at the tail end here, and it's happening at the same time, and also against each other and also both in the bay. i mean, all those kind of things just crazy how they line up, you know? >> you know, i couldn't have thought of a better way to go out, you know, something like this or, you know, us and the

mid 80s for the east bay and peninsula. overall still hot for the inland valleys. south bay to the upper 80s today. the tri-valley will see temperatures very similar near 90 and also for the north bay expecting temperatures near 90, as well. traveling across the state, sunshine from the north over towards the south and down towards san diego. temperatures comfortable, mainly in the 70s and 80s. hot across the desert southwest. if you're headed to the beach, it is going to be comfortable. especially for fall fest in pacifi pacifica. 67 degrees later this afternoon with winds out of the west at five to ten. same for half moon bay, winds out of the west, warmer, though, back to 73 degrees. and in santa cruz, expecting a high near 80 degrees. nice beach day there. winds out of the west, very light at five to ten miles per hour. cold front off the coastline, it's very weak and continues to wash out, so we're not going to feel the effects of it today but as it moves through tomorrow, we'll see more cloud cover as this washes out and the trough starts to develop out over the

open waters. that's where we're going to turn our attention towards tuesday and wednesday and that's going to re-enforce another shot of cold air as we move towards the middle part of the upcoming week. as it does meander this way, it's going to lose a lot of its rain. the only thing we're going to see is cooler conditions. you may have heard us talk about it, the supermoon, lunar eclipse tomorrow evening from 7:11 to 8:23. at the coastline, lots of cloud cover and fog, temperatures back into the mid 60s there. around the inner bay, partly cloudy, mid 60s there. the best viewing inland valleys, high thin clouds and temperatures comfortable around 7:00 into the low 70s for those inland valleys. towards the next couple of days temperatures cool off quite a bit. temperatures in san jose mid 80s. cold front is going to lead to a cooler start for the work week. east bay valley, similar conditions, close to 94 today,

environmentalism. today's the 20th annual water shed environmental poetry festival in berkley. a walk along strawberry creek, food in the farmer's market and celebrate the neighborhood and community, k-12 poets in schools, poetry flash and 100,000 poets for change. that's the group probably won't have all 100,000 there, i bet. sometimes may feel like that, especially for your morning commute, which i'll cover monday here on today in the bay.

you're watching today in the bay. >> 7:51, a live look outside on this saturday morning. the foothills in san jose. it's going to be a beautiful day to get out there and go for a hike. more than a dozen dead whales washing ashore in northern california. on thursday, another one showed up in fremont near the dunbarton bridge. in many cases the whales have been killed by ships or entangled in fishing gear. joe rosato jr. shows us the art of one man rescuing the whales. >> began when i was 8 years old. >> isn't hard to find the studio of peter, you just follow the tail. >> i've always had a hankering for the big animals. >> and none are bigger than the creature he's painted most of his life. >> when i was a kid, i always got in trouble for drawing pictures on my math pages. >> he doesn't get in trouble drawing whales these days.

his illustrations have appeared in magazines, books, even created special effects for movies like "free willy" and "flipper." whales are definitely his second favorite animal. >> my favorite animal is my dog. >> his devotion to whales goes well beyond the canvas. >> might have been 1980 i disentangled my first marine mammal. >> he has a soft spot for whales in a hard space. >> some whales get entangled in crab pots, traps. that's me with the knife. >> entanglements are the leading causes of premature whale deaths. >> cut down into the flesh and they are likely going to die. >> when the call comes, he and his whale entanglement team answer. >> once a report comes in, we can be on that whale within two hours. this is a humpback whale in a crab pot. >> for over 30 years, rescues like this one have played out dozens of times, man coming to
