intact, but paid for it with his resignation. >> okay. well, kevin mccarthy of bakersfield is the republican majority leader. >> yes. >> which really makes him the next person in line to the speaker. will he get the job? >> yeah, most likely, the short answer to that is yes. it could be an upset, most likely yes, but for some dubious reasons, really. while the tea party folks had enough votes to keep boehner from succeeding, they don't have nearly enough votes to select their own leader. remember, they number about 50 out of 247 republicans in theous. the house. assuming you have a majority voting, the vote is 218. so yeah, they can stop them, but they can't get anywhere near enough to elect their own leader. so that means that mccarthy will inherit the speakership almost by default. that's the best way you can put it. more significantly, mccarthy is very much in the boehner mold. same kind of guy. he's not an ideologue. he's a pragmatist, sometimes willing to give up those
7:49 am
ideological rigidity approaches to pass bills out of the house to get things done. so if mccarthy gets elected, it's going to be only a matter of time before the ultra conservatives stir that hornet's nest again, manage to get rid of him, but once again, will have difficulty finding their own kind. >> i wonder if he'll suffer the same frustrations that speaker boehner did. let me ask you this. if mccarthy is elected, will that benefit california in any way? and talk about the historical significance of this. >> it cuts a couple ways. if you want to look at it that way. look, here's what comes to mind. mccarthy is a staunch opponent of the state's high-speed rail program. and he has vowed again and again to prevent more federal funds from going to that program. so that's a negative to folks who want high-speed rail. on the other hand, mccarthy has close relations with the tech community in the bay area. and he's very sympathetic to many of tech's concerns. so yeah, his presence could cut both ways.
7:50 am
by the way, one big historical footnote, spent an hour and a half looking this up yesterday, one big historical footnote, if mccarthy wins the speakership, it will be the first time in history where the speaker and the minority leader, nancy pelosi, come from the same state. so for those of us interested in something new, well, there's something there. >> there's our "jeopardy!" trivia. okay. larry, thank you. thanks for putting in that hour and a half of homework for us on "today in the bay." all right. we're back in two minutes. when we return, kanye west will perform at an intimate bay area venue next month, but he won't be the biggest star in the room. why kanye west will play second fil fiddle at his own concert, and it's not kim. waking up to a little cloud cover leading to a cooler afternoon today. and even cooler as we head towards the next couple of days. i'll have that full forecast coming up for you in just a few minutes. ==vicky/take vo== president

even at the coastline. san francisco, you'll see a nice comfortable day today. but a little cooler with that fog returning. and that's going to mean for 60s as we head towards this upcoming week. and as we've been telling you about, vicky, the rain season, the official kickoff of rain season happens this upcoming week. october starts and hopefully we can start putting more rain icons on the map. >> yeah. we hope for it. >> yeah. me, too. >> getting you busy making some mud, doing something other than telling us about sunny days. >> sunshine every day. >> yeah. we call them rich people problems. you know what i mean? first world problems. thank you. we like this story. president obama once called him a name we can't say on television, but next month mr. obama will join kanye west here in the bay area for an afternoon concert. west will be performing at the warfield theater october 10th. the commander in chief will be there. it costs $250 to attend. but a personal vip experience with president obama will cost you $10,000. all the money raised will
