full-on sunshine throughout the day. and some clouds in san francisco with a high of 70 degrees. the south bay will be topping out at 4. i'll show you more of the microclimate forecast and what to expect through the workweek coming up. let's how the week is getting started on the roads with mike. >> it's a tough start right now for mountain view. the stretch of 101 from moffett up past the shoreline. we have the disabled big rig trailer which had two cars crash into it. it's a crash scene blocking the two left lanes and only half your freeway and we have that build coming up through the area. elcamino the surface streets and you might want to stay on the the road because the chp will have to clear that once they get a bigger truck and shouldn't be too long from now. build out of san jose and where those metering lights, of course, are on. your standard backup as we look at the toll plaza shot. smooth drive on the approach and, of course, we have. >> mike, thank you.

this just in a campbell town home catches fire. happened at a townhome complex. firefighters tell us a family of has been displaced this morning. the firefighters just checked the surrounding units and allowing the residents back inside. a family barbecue last night might be tee blame. services will go on as normal in carmel despite vandals targeting a statue of saint junipero serra. >>any, coming just days after pope francis canonized serra here in the u.s. >> there is enough evidence to link the two. this vandalism that happened at the historic carmel mission. that is where serra was buried. carmel investigators say people

snuck to the mission late saturday or early sunday painting the statue of serra toppled over in the courtyard. "l.a. times" police are investigating this as a hate crime because tombstones defaced and those of native americans were left untouched. some groups have criticized serra saying he was responsible for mistreatment and deaths of native americans. they understand the backlash but understand that every human makes mistakes. >> being a saint, being made a saint doesn't mean the person is perfect. you know, we all have our flaws. we all have our defects. it was with serra. >> take a look at these pictures from the carmel mission facebook page that shows a scheduled celebration of newly sainthood went on yesterday. mission leaders say it also appears none of the damage done was permanent. also people gathered, groups of people gathered and stayed until late last night to help clean up the mess and on the facebook

remembered. >> odi is now headed to new york city where he will attend a summit meeting with president obama this morning. one of the events on his schedule, a very packed one at that. prime minister modi made time to meet with governor jerry brown. the two men in san francisco yesterday afternoon to talk about climate change, renewable energy and the digital economy. governor brown has made slowing climate change one of his top priorities and the prime minister recently revealed new programs in india. meantime, if you'd like to see more of the prime minister's visit head to nbcbayarea.com where we posted interviews at google and at facebook. also watch it all on our nbc bay area app. a sunday outing on the delta was frightening for boaters near antioch. started when a boat carrying two men and a 4-year-old boy struck something under water on the sacramento water shortly before 7:00 last night. the crash opened a hole in the boat and left the boy with a slight head injury. the passing boater rescued the three. the boat started taking on water

and it was towed to the antioch marina. the teenager charged with stabbing a-year-old boy to death in his own bed is back in court today. we could find out whether he's competent to stand trial. defense attorneys for 18-year-old william shultz say that mental illness played a role in the stabbing of third grader. today the jury will listen as two independent evaluators testify on their assessment of the teen. shultz is friends with them and was sleeping over at their house the night of the stabbing. the teen has pleaded not guilty. it is 6:08. more than two weeks after the valley fire started, many students living in middletown are finally headed back to class today. hundreds of homes burned down. entire neighborhood were taken out. middletown schools were somehow spared. school officials have arranged for bus to pick up students who are staying in other parts of laky. in the meantime, classes at cobb elementary school will be held in portable units set up behind middletown, middle school campus. in the meantime, researchers from san jose state say

hurricane linda may have played a larger role in how fast the valley fire spread. researchers think remnants of the storm broughty strong winds to the bay area. right when the fire started and really caused it to explode in size. now, it's burned more than 76,000 acres. but the good news is it's 97% contained. >> we saw a video of a fund-raiser from this past weekend here, too. local musicians playing country music and raising donations for all the victims of the fire. nice story there. >> make a difference. >> a lot of people left without homes there. monday morning get a look at the forecast for the week. we can do a little planning of our own. >> mild start to the week with temperature now at 61 degrees in livermore and 48 degrees now in napa. a look at all the microclimates and expect a high of 80 in san jose and palo alto and 68 degrees in the castro and hayward up to 74 degrees and

livermore will be topping out at 89 degrees. so, fairly mild along the coast and then warming up inland. we'll see that same kind of weather as we go through the week. i'll show you more of that coming up in less than ten minutes. let's see how the commute is moving now with mike. >> you do see the fastrak lanes moving. any movement at the bay bridge toll plaza and the biggest advantage if you car pool. your map will show you slowing for west 80 and some sort of incident earlier not enough to make the chp report, but we do have lanes open and clearing now, once again. the bill starts approaching richmond and scattered pattern there as now for hayward. we have the pattern for the tri-valley, as well. south bay and through mountainview. the big unexpected backup and starting west 237 out of north 101 just past shoreline and approaching san antonio and a trailer and two other vehicles in a crash there. no major injuries but this has been there for over half an

hour. chp says we need a big tow truck to get that cleared. that tow truck is not there. san jose looking just fine and another fender bender around 880 southbound around 101 and that is not affecting the lanes. 6:11. back in court. the former prison worker who admitted to helping two convicted killers escape will learn her own faith today. that story, plus it was rare and it was spectacular. we take a look back at the show in the sky that has a lot of cu== a talking this morning. student has died

a fifth student has died following last week's horrific crash involving a duck boat full of toust a fifth student has died following last week's horrific crash involving a duck boat full of tourists and a bus. 20-year-old woman was an international student attending north seattle college. four other students from the same college also died in that crash. witnesses say they saw the duck boast boat's left front tire lock up before it veer under to a bus on a bridge. now, federal investigators say that duck boat did not get an axle repair recommended for those types of vehicles back in 20. happening today, the former new york prison worker who

helped two maximum security inmates escape will be sentenced. joyce mitchell admitted to smuggling tools into the clinton county prison. two convicted murderers used those tools to dig their way t out. that launched a massive manhunt that lasted two weeks. she pled guilty to first degree promoting prison contraband. she faces up to seven years behinds. so, we've heard this before, smart tvs, so smart that some say they can actually use voice recognition technology to spy on you. now, one california lawmaker is trying to keep that from actually happening. nbc randy mack explains. >> reporter: charlie shelton is an technology specialist. what you might call wired. >> my house in terms of technology is as close to iron man as i can get it. >> reporter: laptops, tvs, gaming consoles are all connected to shelton's phone, but his concern is that as he

watches tv, his tv could be listening to him. >> you never know when you're going to be heard and you have to be careful what you say in your own. >> nowadays technology is good and bad. >> reporter: chris is a salesman howard's electronics. the new samsung smart tvs with voice recognition and microphones embedded in the television that could be programmed to react to your voice commands allowing you to control your tv without a remote are a hot seller. >> i guess it's convenience. like the smart tvs you can connect your tv to internet. >> reporter: with voice recognition, your tv can connect to the people you never met. >> it could be recording all your conversations around the house and sending them to a third party who then bombards you with advertisements. >> reporter: mike gato serves on the state protection committee. he's sponsored legislation to prohibit tvs that can transmit or record your private conversations and send that

information to a third party without your knowledge. >> the conversations you have in your bedroom and your living room they should be private. >> reporter: regarding voigz recognition samsung owner's manual initially issued this warning. please be aware if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of voice recognition. in a blog post clarifying its voice recognition policy, samsung now says it does not record private conversations. the company collects your voice data when you make a specific request of your smart tv. or to elevate and improve features. voice recognition can be turned off. shelton hopes that's the case. like a lot of people, he occasionally talks to his tv, with no intention of anyone actually listening. >> having a person listen to it derive targeted marketing. an invasion of privacy. >> a connection you'd like to

actually know about when someone is listening. the bill is now sitting on governor's desk. did you see it? stargazers treated to a rare astronomical phenomenon. say that fast. a total lunar eclipse combined with a so-called sugar moon. >> when a full moon makes its closest approach to earth, it appears 14% bigger with a reddish hue. that coincided last night with a full lunar eclipse where the moon, the earth and the sun all line-up with the earth's shadow obscuring the moon. the space and center center in oakland was sold out for its viewing and did not disappoint. >> made it look kind of orangey and the bottom was like dark. >> it was really cool just to like see and know it doesn't happen that much. >> okay. take a look at this. this is what stargazers saw when they looked at the skies over antioch. >> it's an astronomical phenomenon.

francisco. 56 degrees there and in oakland and concord 57 degrees. napa 49 degrees. and not much of a wind this morning. we will have a light breeze kicking in from the west at about five to ten miles an hour. picks up as we go into the afternoon. and slightly cooler day than yesterday with more clouds. we see that as we go hour-by-hour in oakland. 58 degrees at 8:00 and by lunchtime it's 69 degrees and a few more peeks of sunshine. into the afternoon, a bright sunshine there for a few hours. highs topping out in the lower 70s. in all the micrmicroclimates in gatos and financial district up to 70 degrees and 91 degrees in fairfield. pittsburg 87 degrees and livermore up to 89 degrees. over the next couple days we have this system just off shore and brings in some clouds for the bay area and also a strong onshore flow. our temperature is brought down

a couple degrees as we go into tomorrow, as well as wednesday. it starts to warm up as we head into the week into the weekend. when the temperatures will be the hottest we feel all week. talking about low 90s in the north bay and tri-valley as well as the south bay and then see it coming down a few more degrees heading into sunday. so, of the two days it looks like sunday is the most comfortable day of the weekend. let's see how the roads looking now with mike. >> we do have pretty much the bay area standard commute except right here through the south bay. north 101 in the mountains. out of sunnyvale slower drive past 237 and all the way up just shy of san antonio. joining the freeway north of san antonio you pass by this restriction and the crash has two lanes blocked and two lanes open. chp says we're waiting for a big tow truck to get there. it's not there yet. central expressway or middlefield can get you past the area. over here another fender bender

a good monday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. mike inouye has a look at the morning commute. let's get to kari hall. >> not a bad weekend across the bay area and now 56 degrees in san francisco and the east bay. 60 in the peninsula and south bay and in the north bay, expect a high of 83 degrees today and 84 in the south bay. see the clouds at the peninsula and the low clouds and fog there. 89 degrees in the tri-valley and san francisco topping out at 70 degrees. we'll take a closer look at this forecast and what to expect the rest of the week coming up. let's check in now with mike. >> kari, great news for mountain view. we have all lanes now cleared just north of san antonio road. the approach there. we have a traffic jammed up all the way out of the mountain view and sunnyvale for west 237. this will recover a bit, but this is the beginning of the morning commute. all the folks out of san jose

that the vandals left behind. good morning. >> yes, sam and laura. the vandals left behind quite a mess at the historic carmel mission. the search is still on for those who are behind it and that is where junipero serra was buried. some time saturday night or sunday morning is when the vandals took paint from the mission using it to cover the toppled statue of junipero serra and defacing headstones and only those of europeans and native americans were left alone which is why police are investigating this as a hate crime. that's accord "l.a. times." now, serra was canonized friday and also criticized for what some say was harsh treatment of native americans. >> father serra is now saint serra. his motto is always forward, never back. so, that's o--

that crash opened a hole in the boat and leaving the boy with a slight hand injury. the boat started taking on water as it was towed into the antioch marina. police in petaluma looking for a man who they say tried to set a man on fire using gasoline. according to the press democrat, the man reportedly poured gas in the parking lot of tquik stop saturday afternoon and then doused a nearby building in gas and tried to set it on fire. for some reason, the gasoline didn't ignite. the man took off before police arrived. a library in berkeley closed because of a possible bed bug infestation. last week an outbreak closed in palo alto. the north branch near the corner of the alameda and bug sniffing dogs will check the other branches this week. bugs will also be inspecting libraries in palo alto. found inside the mitchell park branch. that library reopened yesterday after a visit from

exterminators. >> some people on monday, no doubt, wishing they could go back to bed without the bugs. preferably. but, if you have to go to work, nice weather is in store. let's check in with kari hall. >> great weather starting out the. we see some clouds as we take a live look from tiuran and the clouds will keep, right now 56 degrees in oakland and san jose is now 60 degrees. heading into the day, all the microclimates expect highs in the low to mid-80s in the south bay. and in the peninsula we've got anything from 69 degrees to 8 degrees in palo alto and the outer sunset will be at 62 degrees today. 81 in napa. oakland 76 degrees and dublin reaching 88 degrees. so, cool athe coast. heating up inland. and that's the kind of we'll see over the next couple of days. i'll give you a closer look at what to expect coming up in a

few minutes. let's check in with mike to see how the roads are moving. >> this is kind of scary. first of all, the san mateo bridge is clear. folks are very happy. oakland here. bound 880 heading down towards the san mateo bridge. pull the last-minute switch in the system and want to show the live camera. san mateo bridge westbound. we have no traffic. now, we have traffic flowing for a couple of cars and looked like there was a traffic break for a minute and a half, two minute here as folks are traveling westbound. let's look at your map. causing a backup off of 880. that crash a number of vehicles on either side of the roadway and they may have had to clear up whatever else was in the middle of the roadway. jam out of hayward and san leandro. that's an unexpectedly slow drive and unexpectedly slow 101 through mountainview. the earlier crash cleared and still slow for west 237 because it goes right into that traffic jamming up and that will be the

cascade we see on the approach. we see how this affects, but it looks like this might be a tough drive for anyone north of san jose for silicon valley commuters, that is a little early to kick in. fine as far as the maze goes and there's a crash clearing from westbound highway 4 over at 680. back to you. here's good news for commuters, mike. a good time to fill up. prices that pump are down 9 cents in the past five weeks, according to the lundberg survey. the national average is now.35 a gallon. down more than a dollar in the past year. some experts think these low prices could extend well into next year and maybe into 2017. in san francisco the average price $2.67 a gallon and slightly lower in oakland. al filling up in san jose getting a deal at $2.48 a gallon. increased supply is one of the reasons for the drop. >> enjoy it while it lasts. coming up next our investigative unit uncovers what it is called a troubling trend

they're investigating volkswagen's former ceo who resigned last week. he has denied knowing vw software and criminal complaints suggest otherwise. u.s. prosecutors are conducting their own criminal probe, as well. also today the scandal spread to vw owned audi. sold two million cars sold with the same software including 13 audis in america. decision 2016. carly fiorina clashed with host chuck todd over her comments about a planned parenthood video. during a debate earlier this month, fiorina described a gruesome scene from one of the controversial undercover videos involving planned parenthood. she claimed the footage showed workers keeping an aborted fetus alive to harvest its brain. pointed out fact checkers and even the makers of the video found that to be false. fiorina refused to acknowledge

afternoon with the winds pick up at about 15 miles per hour. it will be cool and turning cloudy at at&t park. if you're heading out to the dodgers versus the giants game at first, it will be at 64 degrees. dropping back to the lower 60s and you'll want to bundle up for that game. let me take you hour-by-hour in san jose. we start out with the clouds throughout at least 10:00. start to see peeks of sunshine through the lunchtime hour and then rising into the upper 70s and briefly hitting 80 degrees there in san jose. gilroy a high of 85. foster city 73 degrees and some peeks of sunshine later on this afternoon. afternoon sunshine and 81 degrees in pittsburg and 87 in livermore topping out at 89. the next couple of days our temperatures will be coming down due to some cloud cover and then starts to warm up as we head towards the end of the week and getting a look at the weekend forecast. very warm start across most of

the microclimates especially in the north bay, as well as the tri-valley and the south bay. it will be in the 90s. coming back down to the 70s and 0s as we head into sunday. let's see how the commute is rolling now with mike. >> rolling across the san mateo bridge. a few minutes of no traffic westbound. your commute direction there must have been a traffic break and here's your approach to the peninsula. the map will show you that, also, speeds on the foster city side are fine but the traffic still held up a bit and little extra approaching the toll plaza. crashes reported and activity on the right and left shoulder as you're approaching the toll plaza but they may have had that traffic to clear whatever was in lanes and move some folks over to the right. building out of hayward and now down towards dumbarton bridge highway 84. typical pattern there. we're holding steady. meanwhile zoom into a couple different issues. castro valley seeing more build and, also, again, northbound side of 880 showing more, as well. any distraction or flashing
