the country to update america on the status of their investigation on the shootinging in roseburg, and more back ground on the shooter that still remains murky at this point. the special report will come up soon and as it starts, we'll get you right there. and then apple set to branch out more in silicon valley. we now go back. is lester holt. good day from roseburg, oregon. we're off the campus of umpqua community college, the scene of yesterday's massacre that took nine innocent lives. right now a news conference starting. sheriff handlin. let's listen in. >> the purpose is to help facilitate the next of kin notification and to provide counseling services as well as

to insure that each and every one of them and the families receive the highest level of support. these families are living a nightmare the most personal way possible. i would ask that the media respect their privacy and let them grieve in their own way. as notifications happen, we hope to share their names and a little bit more about them in future press conferences. on to the issues related to the campus. if your car is still parked on the campus, you need to meet at the douglas county fairgrounds today at 3:00 p.m. at that time buses will be there to take you back to the campus to retrieve your car. you should bring photo id. if you cannot find your photo id and you believe you have left it at the campus, check in with an

officer at the college and let them know, and they will assist you in attempting to retrieve it from one of the buildings. there are also mental health counselors stationed at the fairgrounds, including counselors being provided by the community health alliance. students and staff in need of assistance are strongly encouraged to seek out that help. also, in talking with the umpqua community college partners this morning, our current understanding is that they intend to reopen the campus early next week. please stay tuned for more information on that. we expect that the medical examiner will release the name of the shooter sometime later today. again, you will not hear anyone from this law enforcement

operation use his name. i continue to believe that those media and community members who publicize his name will only glorify his horrific action and eventually this will only serve to inspire future shooters. at this time i would like to introduce atf assistant special agent in charge is selena. >> i'm the assistant special agent in charge of the field division, and i want to provide information on the weapon we have in custody so far. so far we've recovered 13 weapons. out of those 13 weapons we currently have in custody six were recovered at the school. seven were recovered at the shooter's residence. all 14 have been traced to a

federal firearms dealer. they are all at different stages currently in the tracing process. eight of the 14 have been traced to first trace purchasers. seven have been purchased by shooter or a family member all within the last three years. in addition to the weapons recovered, we also were able to recover a flank jacket with the line next to the school. the jacket has steel plates along with five magazines. an additional amount of ammunition was also recovered at the apartment. that's all we have at this moment. i also want to thank our seattle -- our phoenix field division and our north carolina field division and our l.a. field division for working diligently on obtaining all these tracing information for us.

yes. we have 14 currently. one -- 14 weapons. one of them he actually traded back to the source. one of the firearms that was recovered at the school. >> was it at the school or -- >> six were recovered at the school, and seven were recovered at his residence. >> were all of them purchased legally? >> they were all purchased legally, where he. >> were they purchased locally some. >> not all of them. >> but they were all purchased legally by the shooter? >> some were purchased by the shooter. some were not purchased by the shooter. >> i'll open up it for some questions here at the end of this as well. we want to get through the messages quick. this is a very active investigation still. we have a lot of resources committed. they were committed all through the night conducting follow-up investigations, and i just want to remind everyone that we have a toll free number set up to

shooter -- [ inoaudible ] >> i cannot. >> what type of weapons and ammunition and is it possible for one person to -- [ inaudible ] >> in oregon -- i think this is a hunting state, and firearms are popular in most households, yes. >> was the shooter -- >> that i do not know. that is part of the investigation that's ongoing. we don't have information on that. >> there have been a note recovered -- >> suggesting that the gunman gave someone a flash drive with information. do you know anything about either of those two things? >> again, we are in the middle of this investigation, and any information pertaining to that would be irresponsible of me to

[ inaudible ] >> i'm sorry. yes. there is a total of ten fatalities. that number hasn't changed. that includes the shooter. >> sheriff, you have come under attack yourself for being a staunch advocate. how do you feel about the mritization of the -- >> like i have said numerous times this morning, my focus right now is on getting this investigation completed and taking care of the victims and families of the victims, so now is not an appropriate time to have those conversations. >> last question. >> the shooter would certainly make it much easier for us to focus on the victims if we knew who some of the victims were. you must have notified some next of kin now. surely you can release some of those names. >> regarding the name of the shooter? >> no, the names of victims. you want us to focus on the victims. we have to know who the victims

are. could you name them now? name some of them, those that you've been able to identify next of kin. >> i have not. as i mentioned before, this is a mass casualty incident, and there's protocols in place that require that those notifications be authorized by the oregon state medical examiner's office and we hope that those notifications will come hopefully by the end of today. at this particular point in time i am not able to answer that. >> have you talked with the dealer, the gun dealers locally? >> we've been listening to a news conference being held by sheriff john handlin, douglas county, oregon, talking about yesterday's massacre at umpqua community college here in roseburg, oregon. the death toll remains at ten. nine people killed. the shooter also killed, making the tenth. nine people injured. some of the detail we've been learning in this news conference about the weapons the shooter brought. they have found a total of 13.

six of them were at the scene, at the school. also a flack vest at the school. according to the sheriff, all the guns that were either in his possession at the school or at his residence had been purchased from a dealer either by him or people close to him. let's go to nbc's pete williams. pete, the sheriff clearly doesn't want to name the shooter. we know that it is chris harper mercer. what have you learned about him and potential motivation? >> well, his motivation and choosing that school are still something of a mystery. it's known that he has mental problems. his mother has said so. he went through a school for young people when he was growing up in the l.a. area for emotionally troubled young people. authorities say he left behind at the shooting scene a long written document several pages long in which he expressed what they said was showing that he

was depressed, sullen, that he felt the world was against him, that he was in a bad way, that he had no friends, that had he no girlfriend. he said he would be welcomed in hell and embraced by the devil and that he had no life. the one thing we learned today is that they found seven weapons at his home. we knew they found some. we have heard about six at the scene. three handguns and the ar-15 style assault rifle that he was carrying, and then in a second bag, a backpack, apparently, there were two other handguns, and then we also confirmed what we had heard earlier, that he had five high capacity magazines, or clips that hold the rounds that would fit the ar-15. now, the atf said all these weapons were purchased legally, and there's nothing that we know of in his background that would have disqualified him from buying these weapons despite his mental problems. he was never ordered by a court that would be in any way disqualifying. >> all right. pete williams, thank you. the college is closed today.
