now. this is the only grocery store on this side of town. >> a vital part of one south bay neighborhood goes up in flames. tonight the mystery surrounding how this fire started and the larger problem the aftermath is now causing. thank you for joining you. i'm peggy bunker. this is a special edition of nbc bay area because after nbc football. human plumes of smokes poured out of a grocery store. the fire so big, flames burst through the roof, spread to nearby businesses and forced homes to evacuate. it also left a lot of the wreckage behind. nbc bay area's marianne favro joins us live at the cho center the market on center road. this is left a lot of damage to this store. >> reporter: a tremendous amount of damage. you can see here that the cho center market is a totalpv]f l. all night long, we've talked to people. they've come by, saddened to learn their neighborhood grocery store went up in flames.

>> just 20 minutes after it start add, the one alarm fire quickly grew to four alarms as flames shot more than 100 feet into the air. consuming the cho center market and scorching several nearby businesses. >> the fire also threatened the caribe mobile home parks forring dozens to evacuate. there are no reports of injury, but the fire got close enough to buckle some roofs. today people stopped by to take pictures of the devastation. many consider the long time market an old friend. johnny has been coming here since he was a kid. >> shock, i see it's burned down. like a part of history. >> cindy shopped in the market just hours before the fire broke out. >> this is the main grocery store in this area. >> reporter: most of the approximately 40 businesses in caribe will be able to open monday but it will be a long time before the anchor of the mall can welcome customers back.

kensington. investigation started earlier this week when police found the body of his mother at their shared apartment. police are not releasing her identity or any motive in the killing. but they did call the crime scene horrific. neighbors we talked to say they're surprised they never even heard the mother and son argue. and new video tonight of what appears to be a violent home invasion in san francisco. police need help finding the man they caught on surveillance. take a look at this video here. you can see a man in a gray hoodie run up and attack the other man on monds inside a garage in the outer sunset neighborhood. the victim is able to fight back and wrestle the gun away from his attacker. he then makes it outside with the weapon. that's when the other man runs away. if you know the person in the gray sweatshirt, police ask that you give them a call. and a follow-up also to a foiled school shooting plot. this one in northern california. there are fears as students prepare to head back to class

tomorrow. tuolumne koint sheriff's deputies arrested the four summerville high school boyce on friday. they planned 0 open fire on campus and had the names of potential victims and detailed maps of the school. tonight, many students are wondering how they would have responded and if it's safe to go back. opportunities and parents say the tragedy was averted but it was much too close for comfort. >> i was absolutely shocked. i wouldn't think that would happen in this kind of school or town. >> i don't know what i would do. that's something that every parent worries about. if their kid will be safe at school. >> counselors will be on campus to help students work through some of the concerns. the names of the boys arrested will not be released because they are juveniles. students and faculty at umpqua community college in oregon will be allowed on campus for the first time since thursday's mass shooting there. classes will not resume till next month. tomorr
