been called a 1,000 year flood event. meaning in any given year, there is a 1 in 1,000 chance of these rainfall totals. nbc's jay gray is on the ground in columbia, south carolina. >> reporter: flood waters are running through and over everything in their path. >> cars are submerged. cars washed up against the porch and everything. never seen anything like it. >> reporter: in many areas, there's never been anything like this. rain for days straight, at times, two inches an hour. >> bridges are overcome and roads are destroyed. whole neighborhoods are under water. >> reporter: at least five people have died as a result of the storms. hundreds more. >> the house is flooding and they can't stop it. requesting sandbags or assistance. >> reporter: pushed from their homes by a relentless current

and rising waters. >> we have lost everything. what i got on my body is what we have. pretty much, everybody down that hill there has lost everything this morning. our vehicles, our clothes, our everything. >> reporter: as many scramble to higher ground, forecasters say at some point today, the rain should begin to ease. the first responders and official warned, the problems will not. >> this challenge is not over. the danger to life and property does not end when the rain stops. >> reporter: still, it will be a welcome sign for so many anxious for the recovery to begin here. jay gray, nbc news, columbia, south carolina. new developments in the search for a cargo ship missing at sea. the ship lost contact in the bahamas. search and rescue teams are scanning a 225 foot square debris field made of wood, cargo and other items. the ship has 33 people on board,

28 are americans. it was last heard from on thursday during hurricane joaquin. a distress call went out, saying it lost power and was taking on water. the families have gathered together in jacksonville, california. danielle randolph is the ship's second mate. she sent an e-mail to her mom before the storm. >> there is a hurricane out here, and we are heading straight into it. winds are super bad. love to everyone. >> the coast guard will give an update on the search at 10:00 a.m. eastern. law enforcement are taking added precautions because of an online threat to an unspecified area college. there is no threat to a specific institution, but it was serious enough to alert students. philadelphia is home to several colleges and universities, including penn, temple, drexel and villanova. no classes have been cancelled

but several schools asked students to report suspicious behavior. authorities in california say they foiled a high school plot to, quote, kill as many people as possible. four male students were arrested on friday. fellow students saw suspicious activities and reported them to school staff. >> the suspects plans were detailed in nature and included names of would be victims, methods in which the plan was to be carried out. >> the students were in the process of getting weapons. fortunately, nobody was hurt. word of the california plot comes on the heels of last week's shooting massacre at umpqua community college in oregon. today, the campus will reopen but classes won't begin until monday. we're learning new details about what shooter chris harper mercer told his victims before he ki killed them. it comes from the father of one

of the survivors. >> she remembers another lady that was called to the front, and the shooter says, if you will beg for your life, you will not die. the lady began to beg for her life. he shot her. >> he also says the gunman singled out one student to give his suicide note to police calling him, quote, the lucky one. president obama and ash carter are promising an investigation into a deadly bombing at a hospital in afghanistan. 22 patients and staff were killed when a doctors without borders trauma center was hit by a coalition air strike. there are indications that u.s. fighter jets may have been responsible. >> this is a tragic loss of life. your hearts can only go out to innocent people who are caught up in this kind of violence. >> condolences and apologizes aren't enough. we need to get why this happened. >> the group is demanding an independent investigation, saying this could amount to a

war crime. nbc's tracy potts is live in washington. what more do we know about this? >> we, we don't know a lot and that's part of the problems. doctors without borders say they're shutting down for now. they are the only major hospital in that area. it was completely destroyed, and so they're unable to make it operational at this point. they also say they are, their words, disgusted, by suggestions there was taliban inside the hospital that the u.s. and the coalition were firing at. they have absolutely no indication from the staff on the ground that the taliban was holed up there. they're calling for an independent investigation. not just the defense department looking into this, as president obama has ordered. they want someone outside the u.s. to take a close look at why this hospital got hit. ash carter, secretary of defense, says there will be a full, transparent investigation, but he says the early facts were misleading and it's still a complicated situation on the

ground. >> tracie, thank you. turning to the race for the white house, hillary clinton is expected to unveil a sweeping gun control proposal today. under the plan, clinton would tighten rules governing gun show and internet sales. it would allow victims of gun violence to sue firearm manufacturers. "today" show anchor savannah guthrie will have a town hall discussion with clinton and take questions from voters. clinton is still getting attention from her appearance on "saturday night live." in this sketch, kate portrayed clinton, and the real clinton was a bartender who happened to do a pretty good donald trump impersonation. >> i'm so darn bummed. all anyone wants to talk about is donald trump. >> donald trump? isn't he the one that's like, you're all losers?

[ applause ] >> that is him. that's him. >> trump, meanwhile, told "meet the press"'s chuck todd if he were doing poorly in the polls, he'd probably drop out of the 2016 race. >> i'm not a masochist. if i was dropping in the polls where i wasn't going to win, why would i control? if i were doing poorly, if i saw myself going down, if you would stop calling me because you no longer have any interest in trump because he has no chance, i'd go back to my business. i have no problem with that. >> right now, trump is still leading the gop race in iowa and new hampshire, although he's lost ground. according to the new poll, in new hampshire, trump holds a five point lead over carly fiorina. a month ago, trump had a 16 point lead over the nearest competition. in iowa, trump is ahead of ben carson by five points. a month ago, it was seven points.

nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with more on south carolina's record flooding. oh, my gosh. >> off the charts, amazing. they were the only state. north carolina hasn't been that bad. georgia hasn't been that bad. it was a little sliver on the east coast of south carolina. the highest total we've seen anywhere in the state was cainhoy. 26.88 inches of rain. inkridab incredible amount of water. sumter, charleston, myrtle beach and columbia. this is spread across the state. south carolina, there are 312 road closures, 130 bridges are closed because they've been damaged or have debris or have been washed away. a lot in the central portions of the state but some near charleston and georgetown. it's still raining, unfortunately. this is the last couple hours of our epic storm. rainfall from the myrtle beach area, going northward to north carolina, where it hasn't rained that hard. they can take the rainfall
