this morning the south carolina is back in the bulls eye. battered coasts damaged by 22 inches of rain are now preparing for record amounts of floodwater flowing from the interior down to the ocean. >> we want to you understand that we've got another wave coming that we just need to be careful of. >> reporter: officials say 62 dams around columbia are still at risk, but the national guard has been dropping sandbags the size of boulders into the river to hold back the water. homeowners near the beaver creek dam are relieved. >> i think like this is something that's going to be able to be managed from here on out. >> reporter: as the water reseeds, stories of heroism and bravery are surfacing. >> i went down in the water. >> reporter: clara and her grandson clung to a cross after her car skidded into a ditch near a church. he took this video and they waited five hours until rescuers finally pulled them to safety. the national guard has deployed

more troops to the impacted areas. 5,000 are expected to be deployed into those areas by friday. 17 of south carolina's 46 counties are declared national disasters, which means the victims can get federal aid. >> kerrey sanders, thank you. >> we are learning more about oregon and what the first officers on the scene were facing. police sergeant and the detective were justified in using force when they ran toward snyder hall and shot chris harper mercer as he stood in the doorway firing at them with a handgun. >> the gunman didn't injure any additional students once they arrived on the seen.

cloud of smoke rose from new jersey turnpike wednesday afternoon as kevin howard tried to save the man inside the burning tanker truck. >> i wand to get the guy out but being a tanker and as big as the explosion was, you can see where i got was as closed as you could get. >> the dash board howard on howard's truck caught the whole accident on tape. he says a pile of mattresses on top of a van broke loose and vehicles swerved to avoid them, including the truck's driver, before missing a small suv and flipping offer a guardrail. the tanker burst into flames. howard tried to run to the diver's aid but the heat from the driver was too intense. >> i got a good luck at the cab and whatever was left was already gone. >> police later pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

>> whether he intended to or not, he saved those people's in front of him lives. >> thankfully no other reports of injuries but absolutely fright i don't know. >> and another video show as 17-year-old girl rolling out of a moving car. police are hoping the video will help police. you see the back door open and tumble out of that car. she said she was walking to school when the driver lured her into that vehicle and then attacked her. the victim bailed out when she got that chance. it unkno it's unknown if the teen-ager knew her attacker. >> and a worker was left

dangling off a bridge over a ship's canal. the man was in some kind of a harness. crews opened up a manhole and eventually lifted that man to safety. no word on how he got there. and on a much lighter note, the chicago cubs are moving on to the next round of the playoffs after a big win over pittsburgh in the national league wild card game that had plenty of fireworks. rookie kyle schwarber hit a two-run homer. and the cubs go on to win it. gathered outside wrigley field in chicago to celebrate the win,

95-mile-an-hour cutters? bell continued arguing on twitter saying, you guys are telling me there isn't a more qualified baseball player espn can use than a softball player? give me a break. the falcons expressed their disappointment on wednesday tweeting, embarrassed by mike bell's comments given he's on our flagship statement. disappointing. by wednesday, his radio station has allegedly suspended him. he released a statement saying, in part, i want to take this opportunity to say to jessica what i said was dumb and hurtful, and i apologize for putting that garbage on twitter. there's no place for that kind of stuff on our show. this has been a real eye-opening experience. mendoza, 34, a former softball outfielder, won gold and silver medals for the u.s. team at the athens and beijing olympics. after working her way up through the espn ranks she began in

suspects arrested in connection with the deadly a very good thursday morning to you. it's 8:55. three suspects arrested in connection with a deadly shooting of a hiker in north bay are expected to be booked later today. surveillance video shows two of the three who authorities arrested yesterday in oregon. they're identified and all believed to have been in fairfax shortly before steve carter was shot to death monday on a hiking trail. investigators used gps to locate carter's stolen car in portland. california's historic drought appears to be playing tricks on this year's halloween pumpkin. you'll find them smaller in size and number. they've been forced to grow them out of the state this year where the weather has been wetter.

taking a look at the headlines. the ceo of volkswagen's american business is in the hot seat on capitol hill today. michael horn faces tough questions from a house subcommittee on the volkswagen emissions scandal. the controversy deals with 11 million vehicles equipped with software used to cheat on u.s. emissions tests. the hearing will explore on what the deception means for consumers. officials in new jersey are recommending hepatitis and hiv tests for dozens of patients after a nurse reused ed syringe over and over while giving them flu shot shots. the nurse was to administer flu shots to employees of a pharmaceutical company. the nurse used a new needle for

each shot, but both the needle and the syringe should have been used only once. officials think the risk of infection is low, but patients, as you can understand, are anxious as they wait for the test results. norwegian air is hoping to sell one-way tickets to the u.s. from europe for $69 as early as two years from now. the ceo hopes to sell tickets that cheaply by using u.s. airports with low fees and little or no international service, such as new york's westchester airport or bradley international in connecticut. norwegian is europe's third biggest budget airline. >> pepsi with a new promotion. pepsi will sell a limited bottle on october 21st of this year. that's the date that michael j. fox's character traveled in "back to the future 2." he ordered, of course, a pepsi. pepsi plans to made 6500 bottles

>> people get distracted, the phone will ring, you leave the room and don't realize there's stuff on the stove that could turn into a fire. >> reporter: the take aways? keep an eye on what you fry. set a timer when you use the oven. keep a fire extinguisher for electrical fires cl s closeby. sleeping areas, smoke alarms are priority number one. >> it's important to have them in the hallway, outside of bedrooms is an excellent place to have a smoke alarm. >> reporter: gonzalez has one in the halfway, but they should be inside of every bedroom on feevy floor. when fires start, every second counts. >> within seconds, a smaller fire can be a larger fire, which can block your way of getting out. >> reporter: gonzalez is warned to keep 12 inches of space around candles. hers is too close to the bed. make sure the iron is always unplugged. as temperatures drop, space heaters come out.

he spots one in the nursery. >> is this a humidifier or heater? >> space heater. >> reporter: heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires. the red cross recommendation, keep anything three feet from the heat. with the warning signs flagged, it's time to make an evacuation plan. think two and two. with as little as two minutes to escape, two exits should be identified from every room. >> the escape plan, combined with properly working, properly positioned smoke alarms, are the key steps to preventing and maintaining your safety and giving you the best chance of survival. >> reporter: the advice is sobering for this new mom. by being proactive, her family might avoid becoming another tragic statistic. >> with a daughter who isn't able to walk yet, she's completely relying on us for her safety. it would be our worst nightmare to have something like that happen. we'd like to do anything we can to prevent it. >> now, just the time it took
