forecast coming up in a few minutes and we'll take a look at the fleet week forecast, too. let's check in now with mike to see where you'll have a slow down. >> kari, now bay bridge toll plaza. let's consider those metering lights on. this happened over the last few minutes. so, with the burst of traffic, me show you what is going on here. the map shows you a significant slowing west 580 heading up towards that 24 interchange. 24 seeing some relief and west 580 looks like it's moving better and overnight road crew held up a little late there. sending more folks to the bay bridge but folks head up for the upper east shore free way and now two crashes there on the shoulder. no major injuries, but a lot of backups. the rest of your bay moves very smoothly, but a new crash reported somewhere around the san mateo bridge. just off 92 but i'll confirm that with chp. we'll send it back to you. we have an update to breaking news this morning. another deadly shooting at a college campus. this one at northern arizona university in flagstaff. one person is dead. three others are hurt.

it happened earlier this morning just before 1:30 in a parking lot outside a dorm. right now police are not saying what led up to the shooting or how bad the victims' injuries are. police do say they have taken one person into custody. and the school was never on lock down. northern arizona university is a four-year public school with more than 25,000 undergrads. unexpected twist in the case. new developments overnight. three suspects, two killings. the authorities now say these three people are responsible for not one, but two deaths of people in the bay area. that hiker found along a fairfax trail and also a woman found in golden gate park over the weekend. >> "today in the bay" chuck coppola with more on the story that really continues to develop every day. >> absolutely right, laura and sam. good morning. the case against three people arrested in portland, oregon, here in san francisco's outer richmond district continues to build. 24-year-old sean michael angold

and lila scott allgood and morrison haze lampley seen here in mugshots and surveillance video picked up wednesday after investigators say the three drove the jetta station wagon of carter to portland. his body was found along a hiking trail near fairfax monday. he suffered a fatal gunwound. now investigators say they found personal belongings of 23-year-old audrey carey of quebec with the three arrested in portland. carey's body was found saturday near chain of lakes and jfk drive. medical examiner determined she had died from a gunshot wound. she was backpacking through the u.s. now the three suspects in custody in portland face extradition for not one, but two killings in the bay area. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." we have new details on the suspect caught in a high-speed

car chase who crashed his car and then left his injured daughter trapped inside the vehicle. police have identified him as calvin govan. he is behind a robbery that happened yesterday morning. police chased govan to oakland while trying to turn on to east street. they ditched the car, leaving govan's injured 6-year-old daughter sitting in the back seat. the girl was rescued but she's going to need surgery to recover from her injuries. police are still looking for govin. u.s. airman spencer stone rose through the streets of and his arms still bandaged from when he helped his friends take down a terrorist on a train in europe. >> this morning stone is recovering, once again. this time stabbed several times when a bar fight spilled on to sacramento streets. the fight all caught on surveillance video. you see it right there spotlighted in that circle. now, the search is on for the people responsible. kris sanchez is here in studio.

kris, we now have video of the car police are looking for. >> so many questions this morning, sam. one that was dpraeaddressed ver swiftly is no link between this attack on spencer stone and rowics on that train in france. let's start with the car that sacramento police are looking for. late 2000 dark toyota camry that police say three asian men sped off in. police say two, perhaps three of those men are stone's attackers. now, the fight leading up to the stabbing caught on surveillance as you saw earlier. upper right hand corner of your screen. you can't see the moment that stone was stabbed, thankfully, it would seem that he was numbered. now, this all happened just two months after stone and his two friends charged an armed man on the train in paris stopping that terror plot you mentioned. the would-terrorist stabbed stone with a box cutter and stone nearly lost his thumb in that attack. stone and his two friend were

awarded france's highest honor and were met at home with a parade and an invitation to the white house, even. this sacramento cab driver said he saw the fight and even offered to take stone to the hospital, not knowing who he was at the time. >> three guys, you know, they stopped one guy. i mean, like i can say, three, actually. three. they stabbed them and that guy, you know, he tried to protect himself. you know, he tried. but he fight with this guy. >> stone is in serious condition, but is expected to survive those three stab wounds he suffered to his torso. his friend and fellow train hero tweeted "spencer is one tough guy and only he could have done something that and lived yet again." now, the response on social media was very fast. people first shocked and then outraged and then hopeful for stone's recovery. laura? >> yeah, we only wish him the best. thank you very much. 6:05 right now. busted in boston. officers arrested a san jose man

for transporting two large suitcases full of pot from sfo to logan airport. on wednesday, logan airport's canine unit sniffed out the 100 pounds of marijuana carefully packed away. officers were waiting for the 31-year-old man as he got off a delta flight. police say someone tipped them off. it hand in mere seconds. a man and woman walk into a san francisco animal shelter and walk out with a puppy before anybody can stop them. looking for 2-month-old louis. they think the puppy might be in danger. the shelter released two pictures with two people they think stole that puppy yesterday afternoon. >> safe wherever he is. i think we can all agree a reasonable, responsible person does not come into a shelter and steal a puppy. >> now, louis does not have a microchip, nor has he been neutered. if the dog nappers bring louis back, they can do so with no questions asked. it is 6:06.

the blue angels and thousands, even this afternoon. >> absolutely. if you haven't been to fleet week in san francisco, you want to get here early to get a parking spot, especially when the blues take the sky and you don't want to forget the ships that are here. the "uss somerset" behind me along the embarcadero has been parked here for a number of days. but soon in a few hours will be joined by several other vessels. they are this morning at 11:00. we'll have a seven-ship parading underneath the golden gate bridge and it's quite a sight, including four u.s. navy vessels and another one from the canadian royal navy. then time to tilt your head to the skies. to miss the blue angels. six f-18 hornet jets reaching speeds of 500 miles an hour over the bay in front of fisherman's wharf. a pilot telling us yesterday they will get as close as just six inches apart.

they go on at 3:00 today, tomorrow and sunday. the air show starts at 3:30 with matt chapman of philadelphia inside a single engine 330 lx. he made it clear to us, he's not a stunt pilot, rather than aerobatic pilot. stunt makes it sound like he's unpracticed and unsure how his aerial maneuvers will turn out when that's not the case. >> hanging in the propeller and he has shoulder rolls where the airplane is tumbling, literally, tail over nose. looks very out of control, but it's actually not. >> okay. to recap, the air show 12:30 today, tomorrow, sunday and the blue angels hitting the sky at 3:00 and then you have the tours of the ship. they resume tomorrow, sunday and monday. 9:00 to 4:00 here at pier and reporting live, bob redell. >> when they twirl through a air, a long shot.

slower, kari, for all the folks bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights turned on right before 6:00. look at your map. that paving work that was holding up folks cleared the lanes just about a few minutes before 6:00 and that unleashed a lot of traffic over there. the backup at the bay bridge. more folks held up for the east shore freeway and over down towards san pablo and two separate crashes involved over there. on the shoulder, big distraction. the upper east shore. a little build for high way 4 and no surprises for the rest of your bay. the north bay moves smoothly and so the peninsula and 101 at 680 and a new crash right here, 85 and 101. we'll check in to see if there is anything going on and i don't see any slowing. back to you. coming up, fossils on the move. where you'll soon be able to see fossils unearthed. new privacy protection for your e-mail almost as secure as your snail mail. we'll take a look.

fossils dating back to the ice age have a new home this morning. more than 50 fossils were discovered while crews were retrofitting water pipelines in fremont.

the fossils date from 11,000 to 1.8 million years ago and they include bones from ancient bison, elk, deer and horse species. the public utilities commission will donate for the national history museum in fremont. >> that would make sense, right? 6:15 right now. well, say cheese. dozens of cameras going up on the streets of palo alto. city council approved the 45 low resolution cameras this week. the cameras will count how many people are using certain routes on bike or on foot the goal to improve bike lanes and pedestrian paths to get more people out of those. >> taking information off the top of your head as it goes this way on a bike or walking. and it kind of converts that image into a blue dot going that way or a blue dot going that way. >> the low resolution cameras won't be able to identify anyone and the city's contact with the

camera vendors says none of the images collected can be shared or stored. governor brown signed a bill making your e-mail almost as secure as your regular mail. >> scott mcgrew tell us california is ahead of other states. >> it does. called the cal epca. makes your texts and e-mails and other electronic records safe from search unless police have a warrant. now, there are a lot of asterisks to this new law. it only counts for california state law enforcement. there is a glaring emission where e-mail older than 180 days could still be searched without a warrant, but privacy advocates call it a good first step. the campaign to push the law through pointed out this simple irony. police cannot open a letter in your mail box or one you put in a desk drawer without a warrant. but until now, they could look at your e-mail all they wanted.

netflix says it's raising prices on its most popular plan by a dollar. it's the standard plan. there's one there below called basic that's not affected. the price hike hits new customers first. current customers won't see the price hikes for a while and then you see the play station. they're lowering the price of the play4 by 50 bucks. down to $349. drones made a lot of news this week. record $250 million fine against the drone photography company. the faa testified before congress about drones this week and, remember, an faa ban on drones this weekend near fleet week. this sunday on "meet the press" we'll talk to president obama's first drone adviser who works in the white house and justice department on commercial drones when they were first invented. >> no-drone zone all over the news and educating folks when they're buying a drone, they're not just buying a toy. you have to be responsible and

but it's also been shrouded in controversy for what some are claiming are false truths about jobs. whatever the case, it's getting very high marks on the rotten tomatoes movie review website and lots of folks, no doubt, will see that this weekend. >> always a lot of options especially here when the weather cooperates we have fleet week and a lot of festivities going on. >> i think the movie theater would be a great place to go cool off because it will start to get really hot out there this afternoon and the next couple of days. let's take a live look now at the bay bridge. none of the lights on just yet. as we get ready for the loiltig to return slowly over the next few months. looking outside right now, cool as you head out the door. a light jacket needed, but you'll be peeling it off this afternoon. look at these highs today up to 90 degrees. you'll want to wear something that keeps you warm this morning and cool this afternoon. i know, it's a mess. 84 degrees will be your high in the east bay and san francisco 80 degrees in the tri-valley. get ready for 96 degrees.

if you're heading to the beach as a place to get some cool air, keep in mind that tomorrow we will have some high rip current risks because still the tropical system oho that will be stirring up some of these waves and south and southwesterly swells and that could create some strong rip currents along our beaches. just keep that in mind as you head out there and maybe staying inland and going to guadeloupe river park and warm with sun and clouds and highs reaching mid up toer 80s. over the next few days, you're not going to have any rain moving in, even though that system continues to move well to the north of us. and by the end of next week, we'll be paying more attention to the south to see if we can have a chance of showers for the end of next week. in the meantime, it will be warm and it will be sunny and highs in the low 90s in the trivalley. the rest of the area mainly in the 70s and 80s and then still warm as we head into columbus

day. up to 94 degrees in the tri-valley on monday. let's check in now with to see where you'll be slowing things down. >> kari, first of all, our own air show right there. and also for peter parker. that's what's on the screen. also looking at the lights and the backup at the toll plaza. let's look at the map and just tell you that web of traffic flowing through the area and recovery 580. now, up here, still very slow and the crashes are on the shoulder and no lanes blocked and a big distraction. slow just south of the carquinez bridge down towards the upper east shore freeway. a little build for this friday for south 880 and no problems over here for the tri-valley. right around that castro valley wide. watching so far and we do see slowing for north of 238 and maybe one lane partially blocked there. rest of the bay moves smoothly and northbound the crash right here 101 just around highway 85 and looks like all lanes are maintaining a nice, smooth throw and over on the shoulder and fremont the live look and we see

scotland who contracted ebola last year, then recovered -- is back in the 6:25. new this morning, a nurse in scotland who contracted ebola last year and then recovered is back in the hospital. pauline got ebola last year while working in sierra leon. she recovered but bbc reports she's now in a london hospital in isolation with what the hospital calls, an unusual late complication. ebola has killed more than 11,000 people in west africa since it broke out last year. 6:25 right now. and it is time to roll up your sleeves for that flu shot. you know, it's that time of the year. experts say right now is actually the best time to get the flu shot. october is the bedwginning of f season, initially. it takes two week for the body to build up immunity. this year's vaccine more effective than last year's.

still, physicians say some protection is better than none, especially for young children and the elderly. california, meantime, going back on education policy by awarding high school diplomas to thousands of people who failed the state high school exit exam. governor brown signed a bill this week abolishing the exam and award diplomas to former high school students who failed as far back as 2004. became a graduation requirement in '06. opponents tell "mercury news" the test is outdated because students are now learning the new common core standards. a father trying to get away from bay area police crashes his car and then runs away. but it's what he left in the car that has officers really concerned. plus, crimes connected. three suspects, two homicides. the evidence authorities say they have now linking these three people to two separate area killings. got a tip for nbc bay area's investigative unit? call 1-888-996-tips or e-mail

microclimate forecast. >> hotter weather today expected with highs today in the 80s and 90s. but it's cool as you step out the door. it's 51 degrees in the north bay and 60 degrees in the peninsula. and mostly clear skies all of that sunshine heating things up very quickly as we go through the late morning hours. up to 90 in the north bay and 80 in san francisco and 84 degrees in the east bay. we'll take a closer look at the microclimates and weekend forecast coming up. any problems crossing the san mateo, mike? >> i think you'll get to work all right. but we're looking at a slower drive across the san mateo bridge. more traffic and more popular for 92. we had a crash, also, south 880 right around tennyson just south of that bridge turn off and that is what held folks up through hayward and the build is on to the peninsula. we havant reached that volume of traffic in fremont. slower drive and in the backup a crash earlier over here at richmond parkway. we do have another backup and another crash and the backup

past highway 4. that's the upper east shore and the metering lights are on the east shore. smoother flow of traffic through fremont and in towards san jose and look at the live look and northbound 101 has the build, nothing severe, but it is happening. back to you. >> thank you very much. anidate now to breaking news we have been following. classes will go on as scheduled at northern arizona university in flagstaff after a deadly shooting on campus overnight. school leaders and police just held a news conference minutes ago. >> this is not going to be a normal day at nau. our hearts are heavy. >> campus police say the suspected gunman is 18-year-old steven, a student at the school. police say jones got into a fight with a group of students at aing lot outside of a dorm. jones allegedly pulled out a gun and shot four students, killing one. jones was taken into custody shortly that shooting. no word yet on a motive.

a new development in a homicide case that shocked even investigators. authorities now say that these three suspects arrested for the killing of a bay area hiker earlier in the week are the same people who shot and killed a woman in golden gate park over the weekend. >> chuck coppola live with more on the story that continues to develop. chuck? >> good morning. 23-year-old audrey carey of quebec, canada, was backpacking through the u.s. but last saturday her body was found near jfk park and now there is a link that her personal belongings killed in golden gate park had been found among the three murder suspects arrested in portland. pathology reports determine that carey died to a gunshot wound to the head suffered by steve carter, an instructor who was killed on a hiking trail in marin county near fairfax on monday. investigators say they believe

they found the gun used to kill carter. >> the gun nat was recovered during the course of the arrest yesterday. was one of, one similar to that that we were looking for. specific as to caliber. >> investigators believe the three people drove carter's jetta station wagon to portland where they were arrested wednesday. they've been identified as 24-year-old sean michael angold, 18-year-old lila scott allgood and morrison haze lampley. meanwhile, authorities in marin county and san francisco police are working to have all three brought back to the bay area to face those charges. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." new details this morning on the suspect in a high-speed chase who crashed his car and then left hisjured daughter trapped inside. police have identified him as kelvin govan. he is behind a robbery in san

lenadro that happened yesterday morning. he crashed on 85th avenue while trying to turn on to e street. gavan and another suspect ditched the car leaving govan's injured 6-year-old daughter in the back seat. the girl was rescued, but she will need surgery to recover from her injuries. police are still looking for him. the man accused of killing a hayward police officer expected to enter a plea in court later today. mark estrada is killed with murder for shooting and killing sergeant scott lunger back in july. investigators say that estrada shot lunger during a traffic stop in hayward. police found blood and bullet casings in estrada's truck after shooting. his family insists he's innocent. just last month u.s.airman spencer stone in front of thousands cheering his name, his hands still bandaged from where he was stabbed after taking down a terrorist on a train in europe. >> this morning stone is recovering, once again, this time stabbed on the same

media was very fast. people were shocked that it happened. and now they are hopeful for his quick recovery. laura? >> yes, we do hope he recovers well. thank you very much. 6:36. family going after a bay area school where their daughter was allegedly molested. this lunchtime aide is accused of attacking the girl on campus. the family made a claim against spark charter school in sunnyvale saying jonathan chow should have never been left alone with any chil. they want the santa clara county of education to pay saying the district failed to do all it was supposed to do to oversee the charter school, including running background checks on employees. it was a freak accident that ended up causing permanent brain damage. a navy veteran said that a 16-pound seed pod fell from a tree in san francisco and hit him right on the head. here's what the seed pod that hit the man looks like. they are enormous. very heavy. some weighing as much as a bowling ball 50-year-old sean may said he was knocked

unconscious when he hit by that pod. happened during last year's fleet week at the maritime park near geer deli square. the vet's lawyer says they're suing the u.s. park service because the injury was so severe. >> the impact was so tremendous that it resulted in immediate swelling and hemorrhaging of his brain. to reduce that pressure, they had to remove a portion of skull. >> it should be noted the grove of trees where the accident happened is now fenced off. it is 6:38 right now. want to check the forecast and meteorologist kari hall looking forward to the weekend. should have some pretty clear skies. >> getting light in the sky now as we take a live look from belvedere. you see a beautiful sunrise but all clear and all of that sunshine heating those temperatures up, again, today. look for a high of 90 degrees. look f the embarcadero and 90 in napa

and oakland 84 degrees and brentwood 93 and san ramon today up to 94 degrees. so, pretty hot today and tomorrow. those numbers what to expect and a couple events going on coming up in less than ten minutes. let's check in with mike who has a look at what we'll encounter as we head out for that morning commute. what's going on? >> good morning, kari. the underside and little camera shy and also encounter all these lights and the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza completely full now as we hit the morning commute. now, let's look at your maps and approach very smoothly for the maze and little build for berkeley but the problems are the upper east shore freeway. still has activity on the shoulder and that has a backup where there is another crash at panol valley road. also on the shoulder but those combined and carquinez bridge down towards richmond. a gradual build for hayward and south 880 and the nimitz the slow down for the san mateo bridge and that slowing start for san mateo and 101 and the

>> friday light, i guess, for traffic. but friday hot in the weather department because it will be heating up as we go into the afternoon. let's take a look outside right now. a beautiful sunrise as we take a look at our view from san brunoen towards san francisco. it is a great way to start out the weekend and with so many events going on, you don't want to miss this. have a lot to say here. and as you take a look at the seven-day forecast, it's coming up now at the bottom of the screen. it is comfortable and cool as you step out the door. but it will be heating up as we go into the afternoon. the south bay up to 89 degrees and a little bit hotter than yesterday and a bright sunshine in the tri-valley. get ready for that. 96 degrees. yeah, it's week. and with all of the sun, we'll have some thin, high clouds moving in. those thin, wispy clouds still allow the sunshine to come in and will not block your view of the air show going on for today the parade of ships and it will be 76 degrees and low 70s for the next couple of days heading into columbus day. it will be 7 8 degrees.

and a festival in oakland. temperatures tomorrow starting out at 67 degrees. rising into the low 80s. you see that sun all throughout the day and it will be a beautiful day there, too. a look at the futurecast. we are looking for some rain here as we go into next several days but it doesn't look like it will happen. in fact, high pressure keeps our temperatures hot and by the end of next week, a disturbance moving in to southern california. it may bring us a chance of rain as we head into the late part of next week. and now these temperatures are really hot. well above average for the beginning of october. the average temperature for los gatos is 78 degrees. for the beginning of october, but you can see these temperatures and the trend we'll have for the next several days. it stays well above average. not only there, but all across the bay area with some 70s and 80s. 92 degrees in the tri-valley tomorrow. up to 94 degrees on columbus

day. so, you see these temperatures not backing off, at least not for the weekend. so, you'll want to find something to help you cool off. let's check in now with mike. getting a look at what's happening across the bay area with that commute. >> yeah, kari, it is friday. and a lighter overall commute. but look at the volume right here. 101 northbound just seeing a burst and a slow down as a result. we'll you the whole south bay. looking pretty good. friday seeing more slowing over the last month or so. we see north 101 and 280 really showing the slower connections as the commute builds. chp seeing a number of crashes. they qulecleared they very quic and no problem there the tri-valley here and move over towards castro valley and why an easy drive. south 880 and builds past the san mateo and dumbarton and slowing for 101 mild build over there. biggest slow downs over here. jam south at 680 towards the walnut creek interchange and earlier crash and that may be affecting traffic. upper east shore had two earlier crashes and that's got you

slowing down just south of highway 4 and then moving better through berkeley. the north bay see slower sensors and live look for 101 southbound and you do have your build and typical pattern and heavier than your usually friday light that is going to be the trend going forward for the next month or so. >>y suitcases now, mike, thank you very much. busted in boston. officers arrested a san jose man for transporting two large suitcases full of pot from sfo to logan airport. on wednesday, logan airport canine unit sniffed out the hundreds pounds of marijuana carefully packed away. officers were waiting for the 31-year-old man as he got off a delta. police say somebody tipped them off. this happened in mere seconds. a man and woman walking to an animal shelter and walk out with a puppy before anyone could stop them. animal shelter officials are looking for 2-month-old louis. they think the puppy might be in danger. the shelter released two pictures. two people they think stole the puppy yesterday afternoon.

at 6:55. an update to breaking news. a new video of the crime scene from the deadly shooting at northern arizona university in flagstaff. police say two groups of students got into a fight early this morning outside one of the dorms. officers say one student pulled out a gun and shot four students, killing one. he is now in custody. 3rd in golden gate park had been found among the three murder suwho were arrested in portland. 23-year-old audrey carey of quebec was backpacking through the u.s. last saturday however her body was found in golden gate park. now, investigators believe that her killer may be among the three people connected to the murder of 67-year-old steven carter, an instructor that was also shot and killed on monday. the three have been identified as 24-year-old sean michael angold and 18-year-old lila scott allgood and 23-year-old morrison haze lampley. investigators found a gun among the three believed to be the gun used that killed carter. so far, the three are still in oregon. they have not yet been back to the bay area to face charges. 43rd and foelten, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." let's bring in kris sanchez and the latest on the search for

suspects who stabbed international hero spencer stone. >> sacramento police have a lot of surveillance video they're working with to track down their men who stabbed spencer stone. if they can find this late 2000 dark toyota camry it can lead to the two or three asian men who are stone's attackers. also this surveillance video of the fight that led up to the stabbing. while you can't see the exact moment of the stabbing thankfully, nor the argument that led up t it, it would seem that stone was outnumbered. this all happened just two months after stone and two friends from sacco charged an armed man on a train in paris stopping a terror plot there. he was stabbed in that incident, as well. stone nearly lost his thumb. we know he is still in serious condition at uc davis this morning, but he is expected to survive. we'll update his condition as we get it. laura? >> thank you very much, kris. new this morning, nobel peace prize awarded to a group you may not have heard of. the group is a tunesian national
