>> it's a question consuming the capital. who will inherit john boehner's gavel as house speaker. >> i think i shocked some of you, huh? >> with kevin mccarthy's stunning decision to pull out of the race all eyes are san francisco cussed on paul ryan. ryan insisted he's not interested, but wouldn't rule out a run. still, ryan, boehner and mccarthy's top choice may be the only candidate who can unite bitterly divided house republicans. >> maybe we can persuade paul. paul, he ran for vice president, he's a real conscience of the party. >> the speaker doesn't have to be a member of congress, which explains why former st. peter, newt gingrich, who resigned after a republican rebellion two decades ago said he would consider a return. >> this is why george washington came out of retirement, because there are moments you can't avoid. >> just this week, a conservative republican warned any candidate for leadership who has committed misdeeds should withdraw from the race. but mccarthy dismissed that as his reason for exiting. >> no, come on.

>> boehner has said he'll stay on as speaker until a re-election for his replacement in the coming weeks. with congress facing a staggering to-do list. just weeks left to pass a spending bill to keep the government open, raise the country's debility limit or face default and pass a critical bill to repair america's roads. democrats warn the disarray comes with consequences. >> we're concerned that the board of directors of the gre greatest country on the face of the earth is dysfunctional, unable even to select a leader. >> but on the campaign trail, donald trump gave himself a pat on the back for mccarthy's move. into zbl they're giving me a lot of credit for that. because i said you really need somebody very, very tough and very smart. >> less than 24 hours after mccarthy's stunning announcement, right now in the building behind me, house republicans are trying to figure out who's up next and what the path forward looks like. savannah and willie?

>> peter alexander, thank you. >> chuck todd is the moderator of "meet the press." kevin mccarthy this time yesterday looked like a guy who was going to be the next speaker of the house, he stunned a lot of republicans in that room. how shocked were you to hear the news? >> i wasn't shocked that mccarthy was going to struggle. i thought his future was going to be at the benghazi committee. if hillary clinton got the best of the benghazi committee, i thought his speakership candidacy was in trouble. i guess i'm shocked that he didn't even try to see if he could get the votes he needed by the end of the month. on that front what happened yesterday clearly shocking. >> what's happens next? because you have a vacant job over there in the house of representatives. the speakership, it's a powerful job. and yet you don't have people falling all over themselves to fill it. >> nobody wants it for the very reasons why john boehner is leaving the job. the place is impossible to run right now. it's going to be impossible to run during a presidential election. particularly the primary. the same forces that are dividing the republican party,

trump, carson, fiorina from bush, rubio, all that stuff -- these are the forces in the house that are basically saying we don't want the same people running the house. i think that that's, i think mccarthy was, was going to be boehner 2.0, i think a lot of conservatives saw that and i think that's why they were trying to torpedo this thing. >> the name on everyone's lips in washington is paul ryan. he was the running mate to mitt romney in 2012, a guy highly respected among conservatives and republicans on the hill. he's a guy who also has said i don't want this job. what are the odds that he ends up being the speaker? >> i think they're getting higher and higher. i think paul ryan is a man who can be convinced of saying you've got to do it for the party. i think the best scenario that those that want ryan to do this, is basically saying hey, you only have to do the job until the end of '16. you don't have to pledge to do it. just be the temp at this point. do whatever it takes to be, to fix this thing for now. so i think the scenario is ryan will do this, but only temporarily.

pulled the ad at the vice president's request. according to the "l.a. times," biden felt the ad treads on sacred ground. >> my wife and three children were christmas shopping. tractor-trailer broadsided them. >> the video is aimed at highlighting biden's resilience. showcasing the moment in 1972 when a car crash killed his wife and daughter and left his two sons seriously injured. biden, who had just been elected to the u.s. senate for the first time decided to serve amid his tragedy. >> by focusing on my sons, i found my redemption. >> in a statement, the senior adviser to the group said nobody has more respect for the vice president and his family than we do. obviously we will honor his wishes. >> it's really my family and i have the emotional energy to run. >> did also comes as biden is grieving once again. having lost his son, bo, in may. the vice president has acknowledged he's not sure he has the strength to run.

south carolina to voluntarily evacuate. she says a new round of flooding there could linger for up to 12 days. local emergency management officials have opened up an emergency shelter but stress evacuations are voluntarily and that are right now limited to rural areas. but meanwhile, more than 350 roads and bridges remain shut down throughout the state. today here in columbia, the cleanup continues and secretary jeh johnson is scheduled to tour the area. more rain is scheduled this morning. >> difficult days ahead. thank you, gabe. as we mentioned earlier, tense moments thursday for passengers and crew aboard a delta flight from seattle to hong kong. shortly after takeoff, a red tailed hawk hit the engine of the airbus a-340, forcing the plane to return to seattle, tacoma international airport. >> air strike. 79. >> 79, say again, did you see what happened with delta? >> yeah, number 2 engine bird

strike. >> roger. >> the plane remained in the air for about an hour to burn off fuel in order to make a safer landing. eventually, the plane did land safely. thankfully, no one was injured. a tunisia democracy group has won this year's nobel peace prize. this morning, the norwegian noble peace committee announced tdialogue the diealogue quartet won. chef prudhomme died. he was a frequent guest on the "today" show. he was 75 years old. and now to that frightening video we showed at the top of the show.

if you have ever been scared to cross a suspension bridge this is not going to help you out. a group of four tourests were crossing and it collapsed under their feet, sending them plunging more than 25 feet into that river below. this is incredible. no one was seriously injured. an investigation is under way to find out exactly what went wrong there. there's nothing that could prepare you for something -- >> oh, my gosh. >> what went wrong? the bridge broke. >> you've seen movies and it's always this slow process. that was just in an instant. >> frightening. >> this doesn't happen if you just binge watch tv on your couch. >> pro tip right there. thank you. how about a look at the weather, dylan. >> more rain moving into parts of south carolina, especially as we go into saturday. in the meantime, it's this cold front that's bringing most of

its rain just south of st. louis right now. this is a cold front that's actually going to slowly spread eastward through the day today. and then as it slowly moves through south carolina, we'll see heavier pockets of rain develop across the western part of the state early saturday morning but as we go into saturday afternoon, this area of low pressure develops and this is going to be the reason why we could see some areas of heavier downpours. also, more of an easterly component to the wind. that's going to increase the regular high tide. so we could see more coastal flooding. we're not looking at a whole lot of rain, just about a quarter of an inch up to a half inch with isolated higher amounts around myrtle beach. that's no good news for the fact that rivers and creeks are all still very, very high. as for the drought, since september 29th, we have wiped out the drought completely in south carolina. but again, we could see more dangerous flooding possible as we go into this weekend. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecas

sct a very good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. the three suspects in monday's deadly shooting are now being tied to the killing of a canadian traveler in san francisco's golden gate park. 23-year-old audrey caren's body was found last weekend. she attended a bluegrass fell festival. investigators found her personal property during the arrest of three suspects this week in portland, oregon. the suspects sean angol, morrison lampley and lila allgood are all accused in monday's deadly shooting of contrateacher. let's get to a look at that forecast with kari. >> yeah, going to be heating up

his condition listed as serious but stable. new video released by the sacramento police department shows two stabbing suspects fumbling into a car and driving away. >> stabbing, ambulance is en route. >> moments earlier, a different surveillance camera captured them and others fighting with spencer stone, one of the americans who foiled a terror plot in france. officers say stone appears to be the man in a long-sleeved white shirt. the hospital now says stone was stabbed three times in the torso. the air force reporting the wounds were initially so severe detectives didn't think he would survive. >> airman stone's condition is serious. while he has sustained significant injuries, his care team anticipates he will make a full recovery. in august, he and two friends took down a terror suspect aboard a high-speed train headed to france. praise around the world for their bravery.

>> this incident is a very unfortunate altercation between two groups of folks who were enjoying the nightlife in midtown sacramento. >> sacramento police say stone was not targeted. the fight started with an argument and only stone was seriously hurt. of course, great news that stone will make a full recovery. investigators also telling me another person with stone at the time, a woman, suffered minor injuries, but can't explain what happened, because she doesn't remember. police reiterating that alcohol was a factor in the fight. and nobody has been charged in the crime. savannah? willie? >> we're glad to hear that spencer is going to be up and around soon, jacob rascon, thank you. important information for anybody who flies, if you've ever sweated it out, wondering if you could fit your carry-on into the overhead bin, we've got good news, airlines are trying to make your life easier with bigger and wider bins. nbc's tom costello got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look.

he's on an alaska airlines plane this morning in seattle. >> brand new plane, never had a passenger on it. when alaska asked its passengers what are their chief complaints? among them, not enough storage for the bags that they carry on. they're doing something about it. they're adding 50% more space overhead on boeing 737 series. that's 50% more room to put the bags that you decide you're not going to check, and other airlines are lining up to do the same. two million people -- that's how many of us fly in the u.s. every single day. >> we are on a full flight today. >> please remember the overhead. >> among the top passenger a complaints? not enough overhead space to store all of our carry-on luggage. >> it should be just the suitcases up there. >> i try to carry on, but-day go out of my way to make sure i've got a bag that actually fits. >> why don't you check the bag? >> i don't want to wait, i'm in

a hurry. >> there's the expense, many airlines charge $25 per checked bag. for a family of four that can add $200 to a round-trip ticket. last year the airlines bag $3.5 million checking bags. >> we're running out of room. >> the challenge for the airlines? where to put all of those carry-ones. now the world's biggest airline maker says it has a solution. >> the 737 interior's mock-up. >> brant walton is boeing's interiors manager. this is a typical bin space today, what have you done? >> we've take thn bin, made it larger. insuring that each passenger will have room for a bag and we've created 50% more bag space. >> 50% more? >> that's right. it will hold two more bags in the same space. >> you've got six bags compared to four. >> that's correct. >> on a 737 800, the expanded bin space will increase the number of bags that can fit overhead from 118 to 178.

60 more standard-sized bags. not all bags are standard. they come in all shapes and sizes. within two years, nearly half of alaska airlines fleet will be fitted with the larger bins. >> customers told us they have a lot of anxiety whether or not they can fit their bag on that plane. by providing so much more bin space, it alleviates the anxiety for them. >> back at boeing, a simple question for the design experts -- where do you get the space to do this? >> we've lowered the bins by about two inches, which gives easier access and visibility for passengers to load and unload their bags. it also provides passengers easier reach to the lights. >> a little list head room, but a little more room on top. so boeing is going to hand over this brand-new plane to alaska airlines on monday, at least seven other airlines are talking about doing the same. retro fitting their planes or bringing new 737s with more bin space. here's the catch -- just because you get more bin space does not mean you get to bring on bigger bags, those size limitations remain the same. back to you. >> all good news, tom, we want

"pan" and i started crying and it was a dream come true. >> and it must be and i'm sure you're familiar with all of the other peter pans before you and was that part of your preparation or was that nerve-racking to think there are so many different versions of this? >> well, it wasn't exactly inspirations of peter's character. because there is a different -- there is an origin story, so it's something that's never been seen before, and i thought i could -- well, it was already there for me and we constructed it with joe but i thought i could bring a new peter pan and origin story. >> it's so exciting, and you have to get down and dirty in there. so you've got to do real stunts. and you were really in there. i know you had a stunt double, but as i understand, you did a lot. >> i have been saying, i wish i always had a stunt double for every day. >> like a copy shop? >> just when i didn't feel like doing something, send her in. but the whole stunt department was amazing.

jersey banded together to fight for its biggest cheerleader. >> you think of my family and all you do, it's football. i'm a girl who knows a lot about football. i'm a little crazy when it comes to my boys. that is my biggest joy, watching them play. >> reporter: laura is a proud football mom. leading the cheers for her sons. but in 2012, laura was the one in need of support. after she got a diagnosis that's all too common for women. >> i went for my normal mammogram in november, and the last week in november, the doctor actually called me here and he let me know that i had cancer. i had surgery, and they realized that it had gone to my lymph

nodes. >> when they had gone to have the surgery, we found out it was stage two and that's when it really hit. that's when it really hit hard. >> from day one, my family became a team. my sister was like quarterback. my boys, my mom and dad, they were all just taking care of me. >> laura's support team grew to include the community. >> you have your family-family and then you have your football family. and at that point, they cross paths. >> when i was first diagnosed, i said i want to be okay just to see them play football. and i know it sounds crazy but that got me through my cancer. >> after treatment, laura was in the stands at her boys helped

lead the football team to a new jersey state title. >> i know my boys love me a lot, and just to have them win, i know that made them so happy so that made me so happy, so they kind of got a reward for being there for me. for that year. me beating cancer, and then my boys winning a state championship, i couldn't have asked for more. >> when my mom got sick, we knew that she was going to win. there was no doubt in my mind she was going to beat cancer and it was kind of the same mentality on the football field. >> oh, i'm so happy. woo! >> in football, you work together to get the ultimate goal. without our football family, i would never have gotten through my cancer.
