the death toll is rising this morning. nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel is in insstanbul with the very latest. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this was an absolutely atrocious event. young people, peace activists, students this be gathering in ankhra this morning. they were leaving the train station to gather for this peace demonstration, which there is a low-level conflict going on right now between the turkish government, the turkish military, and kurdish fighters. these people were coming to say that that fighting needs to end, that the country needs to pull together and, as the crowds were growing, witnesses say two explosions went off. one can be seen while people are dancing in the foreground. and some of them 100 injured were actually carried away on the peace banners that they were bringing to this rally. so far, there's been no immediate claim of responsibility, but this attack bears all the hallmarks of an

isis-style attack. the opposition parties and many of the people who were at this rally do not support the government, say that the timing is very suspicious. in just three weeks, there will be important elections in this country, and opposition parties accuse the government of not doing enough to protect them. craig? >> richard engel for us this morning in turkey. richard, thank you. there are new details this morning about last week's mass shooting in oregon. for the first time, we're hearing just what happened inside a classroom walked in and opened fire. those details coming to us from a man known as the lucky one. chanel has more on that for us this morning. >> yes, good morning, erica. while we've had a general idea of what transpired at that community college in roseburg, oregon, which is a first chance to learn exactly how horrifying those last minutes were for the victims and the survivors. this morning, the most detailed account yet of what really happened inside one of the classrooms where christopher harper mercer killed eight

students and a teacher before turning the gun on himself. 18-year-old survivor matthew downing releasing a statement overnight saying, he was chosen by the gunman to be, quote, the lucky one, who would tell the story of what happened. downing writes that, quote, it was about 30 or 40 minutes into the class when i heard a couple of shots fired when he walked in. the first thought in my head was that this couldn't be real. downing says the shooter told everyone to get into the center of the room to be quiet. then, says downing, he looked directly at me and said, hey, kid with the glasses, you are the lucky one. i will not shoot you if you give this to the cops. i stood up and he pointed the gun at me and this is the moment i thought i was going to die. o was going die." he spared downing, and the shooter asked student after student if they were religious, then shot them in cold blood. finally according to downing, after harper mercer was shot from outside by a police officer, "he laid down on the ground and shot himself in the head." downing's statement released the same day president obama visited

with some of the survivors, as well as family members of the victims. >> we have to come together as a country to see how we can prevent these issue from taking place. today, it's about the families, their grief and the love we feel for them. >> reporter: protesters lined the streets, upset with his push for stronger gun control. >> he's here for a gun-grabbing agenda. you know, our town is in mourning. >> today funerals will be held for four of the victims. umpqua community college will begin holding classes again monday, the first time since the shootings. >> thank you. turning to north korea now. that country is putting on a major show of force today to mark an important anniversary. and north korea's leader is talking tough when it comes to a possible conflict with the united states. nbc's chief global correspondent, bill neely, is in the capital of pyongyang. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. from a very rainy pyongyang

where i've just seen probably the biggest parade in north korea's history, the biggest military parade. it was undeniably impressive in a rather uncomfortable kind of way because no one does a parade like the north koreans. it is unquestionably the goo goose-stepping capital of the world. look first of all, this was a show of strength. remember, this is an army that regards the united states as enemy number one. so this wasn't just a display of unquestioning loyalty. this was a defiant message to america, don't mess with us, don't stop us trying to develop the nuclear weapons that we believe are our sovereign right. that, of course, is exactly what the u.s. is trying to do. there was also a defined message here from the man who provided over the parade, the supreme leader kim jong-un. he said, "our policies are driving the united states into a dilemma and into a corner, and i will continue to strengthen this

army." so a defiant message from him. you can probably hear the troops in the background chanting because this celebration, this parade will go on here, although it's slightly raining on the parade. that is certainly one thing the supreme leader cannot control. from pyongyang, back to you, craig. >> reporting from north korea, bill, thank you. the push for a new house speaker continues in washington this morning. republicans scrambling to find someone to take the speaker job. so far, not a lot of luck. nbc's kristen welker at the white house with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. stunned members of congress are trying to regroup away from washington. most of them at home this holiday weekend. the name emerging as the most likely replacement for the current sharkhouse speaker is f presidential candidate paul ryan. it's not clear that ryan wants the job. with house republicans leaving town without a leader, all eyes

are now on congressman paul ryan. the consensus candidate who top republicans want to be the next speaker of the house. >> right now i'm going to make it home for dinner. >> reporter: the 45-year-old father of three has consistently said he's not interested, content with his current position as chairman of the powerful ways and means committee that overseas tax law. >> what an absolute privilege and honor it is to chair this committee. >> reporter: friday it was clear he would have a lot of support even among potential opponents. >> if paul ryan got into the race, of course i'd support him. >> paul would be a great speaker. i think paul ryan's the right person to do this. >> reporter: the more conservative branch isn't total oh board. >> i'm not committing to any at this point. >> reporter: this all comes after congressman kevin mccarthy stunned his colleagues and washington thursday by announcing he was dropping out. >> i think i shocked some of you, huh? >> reporter: he dismissed rumors that a whisper campaign led to his ouster. this week a conservative republican warned any candidate for leadership who has committed misdeeds should withdraw from the race, although he did not

name mccarthy. mccarthy saying that had nothing to do with his decision. >> no. come on. >> reporter: the chaos comes as the house is facing a long to-do list including needing to pass a spending bill to keep the government open and raising the debt limit or face default. a house divided but seeming to agree on one point -- >> i think the people want to get it right rather than do it too fast. >> reporter: ryan even took a call from his former running mate, mitt romney, who urged him to run. the outgoing speaker, john boehner, said he will stay on until an election for his replacement. >> everybody is putting on this full court press, as you mentioned. even people who are not in washington at this point. paul ryan made it clear he's focused on the packers this weekend and his family. when can we expect a final decision from him? >> reporter: good question. the house will be on break for ten days. congressman ryan will undoubtedly use that time to discuss the decision with his family, with his friends. he's hoping his colleagues use the time to decide whether they're ready to rally behind

him. by all accounts, the congress wants to resolved as soon as they get back from break, so they can work on issues like keeping government funded. >> kind of an important issue. speaking of other decisions, everybody e everybody anxiously awaiting a decision from vice president joe biden. any word there? >> reporter: not yet. but look, vice president biden, according to sources, is home this weekend his family. i'm told he will hold a meeting with them to try to decide if he actually wants to get into this race. he knows that the clock is ticking. and he really only has the next week or so to decide whether he wants to get in, if he really wants to mount a credible campaign. remember, he has a big catchup job because hillary clinton, bernie sanders have already raised a lot of money. he also has to play catchup in terms of mounting an organizing game on the ground. we don't expect him to participate in next tuesday's debate, but a final decision is expected within days.

a hero secret service agent has died. jerry par was credited with helping to save of life the president ronald reagan during the 1981 assassination attempt. par quickly moved reagan out of the path of gunman john hinckley and made the decision to head to the hospital. former first lady nancy reagan calls him one of the finest agents to serve the country, and her true hero. jerry par was 85. in major league baseball, it was the mets over the dodgers in the first game of their national league division series. in this match-up, the mets topped the dodgers 3-1. key to the win, the 13th strikeout thrown by mets' starting pitcher jake degran in his post season debdebut. the white house overnight was bathed in a pink glow. one of many buildings and landmarks being lit up for breast cancer awareness month. absolutely beautiful, isn't it? >> pretty. thanks. spent time in south carolina this week, my home state. it is going to be a long time before folks there are able to get their lives back to normal.

and now word of more rain. >> more rain likely today. they're still dealing with flooding. the rivers, creeks, they take a long time to recede. and you see homes are still under water. and with more rain on the way and a little bit of a coastal system setting up, we could see some coastal flooding. the governor has not issued any mandatory evacuations but said people -- said people living along the coast should be mindful that more flooding is possible. so here is the frontal system that is moving to the southeast. western parts of the state will deal with the heavier rain this morning. then it moves into the eastern part of the state as we go into this afternoon. flash flood watches are in effect across most of south carolina. it's this area of low pressure that's going to wrap the winds back around. that could create some high tide flooding around the times of high tide along the coast. then it will exit. by sunday, the rain will exit the coast, and sunshine good saturday morning to

this morning, she is speaking exclusively to nbc news. nbc's kristen dahlgren has her story. >> an easier thing to do. it seemed easier to go to jail than testify. >> reporter: at the victim's request, nbc news has agreed to shield her identity as she speaks for the first time. the judge punished her to refusing to testify against the husband she alleges choked and threat threatened her as knifepoint. >> why didn't you show up? >> my anxiety. >> you think you have anxiety now? >> i knew i did wrong when i missed the trial, but i wasn't expecting her reaction. >> reporter: the court held her in contempt. >> i sentence you to three days in the county jail. >> reporter: the video went viral. advocates for abuse victims outraged. >> many victims will remain

we should go outside. dylan dreyer is standing by with the check of the forecast. >> good morning, guys. a bit chilly out here in the northeast. for today, it will warm up back tomorrow. in the southwest, we are looking at record-breaking heat. we have the area of high pressure going to keep temperatures about 5 to 20 degrees above average. fresno should top out at 96. l.a., 92. vegas at 93. it is not just in the southwest. look at the northern plains. bismarck, north dakota, 84 for the high today. that heat extends through the plains and start spreading east. we have rain in south carolina, an area that is still dealing with massive flooding. we are looking for up to 1 to 3 inches of additional rain and high tide along the coast. tomorrow, temperatures should get back up near 70 degrees. most of the country on sunday looks like will see quiet conditions. not a lot of rain expected anywhere on sunday.

"viva" today series. natalie morales caught up with america ferrera to talk about her life on tv and other passions. politics and anti-bullying efforts. >> amy is a venture of life. >> america ferrera is back on set in the comedy "super store." about employees at a discount department store. >> you play amy. a veteran floor supervisor. >> it was probably her high school job and ten years later, she's here. it's fun and it's funny and the hardest part of the job is keeping a straight face. >> write letters. call. >> reporter: it is not the actor that inspires the star. she is passionate about politics. >> so many of us know of the strong voice you are about getting out the latina vote. >> it is about empowering our community. it is hard to show up and engage in a system.

>> reporter: this summer, ferrera made headlines when she wrote a letter addressed to the republican frontrunner donald trump after his comments on mexican immigrants. she wrote, i'm writing to say thank you. you see what you just did with your straight talk was send more latina voters to the polls than several rallies combined. >> reporter: the letter you wrote went viral. what did you think? >> i think it speaks to a certain point of view that wants to be represented. >> reporter: that point of view shaped by her heritage as a daughter of immigrant parents from honduras, she was born and raised in los angeles. >> georgina? >> that is my middle name. america was a terrible name to grow up with. kids will find anything to make fun of. they used to turn to me to say the pledge of allegiance. it took me a while to understand what it meant for me, what it
