kari, for a monday. >> rushing along, especially if you don't have to work. you're enjoying it at home. i don't know why you're up this early. if you do have to work, you're heading out the door and in the upper 50s all across the bay and north bay 52 degrees and a hot afternoon, especially in the north bay and south bay, as well as the tri-valley as we get a look now at san francisco. you see a few clouds there. let's check in now with mike to see what's happing in the tri-valley. >> kari, folks love it so much they set their alarm on a holiday. it's so early the traffic is so light through the area even a couple slower vehicles will mess up that data and back to the speed limit there as well as the rest of your bay. couple overnight road crews and check through san rafael and the light volume of traffic continuing novato down to the golden gate. two people in the hospital after a car drove down an embankment and through.

the car was headed on northbound 87 about 2:00 this morning when it veered off to the right and ended up hitting the encampment. two people hurt, should be okay. no word on what caused the driver to lose control. a computer dmrich glitch is threatening to create another long day for air travelers across the country. the warning from southwest, get there early. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez and southwest still working out the kinks to this massive computer glitch? >> yeah, they say get here two hours early and certainly we saw people inside the terminal already heeding that advice and making sure they get on that flight. we know a lot of bay area travelers that are headed out today post fleet week and all the other festivities here. now, this all comes because of a computer glitch that surfaced on sunday that had the airline checking every one in manually. passengers here at maneta san jose had it the best. their delays a little less than

oakland and san francisco and adding to the frustration a lot of passengers tell us that they didn't get a lot of information about the reasons why. again, it was a computer glitch that shut down the airline's website and the ticket centers and look at the impact down south at los angeles international where even the traffic was impacted by this computer glitch. it wrapped around the airport for quite some way. travelers arriving in the bay area told us about their experience. >> coming from seattle it is about one hour. >> it was about 45-minute delay. >> at l.a.x., southwest tried to appease passengers with some pizza and between that and the airline's long history of positive customer service, some passengers are willing to cut them a little slack yesterday but that may not last if the computer glitch lasts into today. to reiterate, the airline says to get here at least two hours early. if you can print your boarding passes at home, do that so you

come with a paper ticket. using your phone, may not work if that computer glitch seems to not resolve today. >> all right, good advice for travelers. thanks, kris. breaking news. an update on what we brought you last night. a happy ending for two boys missing in castro valley. the 11 and 12-year-old boys disappeared yesterday afternoon from old dublin road. officers found them safe at their father' house. no word on where they had been all that time. a plane that crashed over the weekend in south lake tahoe was registered to a man from the bay area and this morning investigators have yet to identify the victims of that crash. two people are dead and identifying them has not been easy. investigators say it will require dental records. the single engine plane crashed into a wooded housing development saturday night. faa records show the plane was registered to 73-year-old conrad

of oakley but investigators are not saying if he was on board. >> would he have rented the aircraft? >> no. >> why not? >> he was the pilot. >> chemical engineer. gauts some smarts upstairs and he didn't talk about it too much. >> witnesses say the plane crashed in windy conditions shortly after takeoff from lake tahoe airport near highway 50. more details, the bay area playwright saw that crash to watch one of his plays perform to the festival. they just settled in to their vacation rental when the plane crashed nearby. >> the whole house sort of jolted and it felt like an earthquake, but it didn't sound like an earthquake. >> went outside and realized it wasn't an earthquake and the crash only ten feet from the house and the flames were moving quickly and the two were able to get to safety and then firefighters arrived. it is 5:04.

as fleet week wraps up for another year, we give you a final look at the majestic blue angels in the sky above san francisco. always so cool. this is their final performance yesterday at fleet week. the blue angels take off from oakland international at 10:00 this morning. yesterday may have been the last day to catch the angels, but still one more day of festivities. ship tours are being offer today starting at 9:00 a.m. and the high school band challenge begins at 10:00 at golden gate park. what sort of weather will the two of us have? let's check in with kari. >> we had such a great weekend and it is nice and cool as we step out the door now and the highs today will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s in the south bay today. gilroy up to 93. half moon bay 74 and in the richmond district, 72 degrees and napa 92 and oakland 84 and

danville up to 91 degrees. so, temperatures hot today and tomorrow and maybe a chance of rain for the middle of the week. i'll show you that and another chance for the weekend. wow, it's going to look pretty good at this point. i'll detail that coming up in a few minutes. let's check in now with mike taking us to oakland. >> we'll look at oakland because we do have some slowing. a lighter flow of traffic continues and look at that west 580 coming up towards the 24 interchange and continuing up towards grandwood. overnight road crew there and may be clearing or some more traffic heading through that construction zone. that's the only issue heading towards the bay bridge. the upper east shore and coming off the walnut creek interchange. we'll take you over here towards the dublin interchange. it doesn't show up on our sensors but the traffic flow is starting to build a bid and we're just seeing more traffic and that's the typical pattern. no slowing for the south bay or the peninsula. happening today in half moon bay this morning, pumpkin

farmers preparing for the great pumpkin weigh off these are massive gourds from last year's competition. this year the drought might bring in some smaller competitors. >> today bob redell in half moon bay. there is also a big surprise prize at steak. >> last year might recall john of napa won with a 258 pounder which was the first time the half moon weigh off has and that did set a north american record which has since been broken. he's back again this year and, john, what do you think your pumpkin is going to be weighing in at? >> not enough. >> really? >> yeah. it should weigh close to 1,500 pounds. >> you did have another one. >> i could have held my head

higher. >> what happened? >> that pumpkin had a sag line in the opposite direction and it pulls the meat away from the inside and that happened at like 3 32 days old and at 72 days old i showed him all the pumpkins in my patch and we get to the big one and i was like you guys have to go. it was probably about 1,500, 1,550 and it was slowing down, but it was still putting in almost 20 pounds a day. 30 days until here -- >> how much is the drought impacted the growing this year? sglits. >> it's impacted everybody. i'm on a well and i have some pretty nice neighbors. we shortened our sprinklers so the wind would keep all the moisture in our patch. i let my lawn go brown, you know. but they do take a lot of water.

national security. it starts at 4:30 this afternoon. soon you'll be able to get your driver's license and register to vote at the same time. governor brown signed a bill automatically registered voters when they get a new license or an old one renew an old one at the dmv. the move follows oregon. that state adopted the first voter registration law. auto pilot not just for airplanes. tesla will roll out elon musk made that announcement on twitter. musk says drivers of model s cars will be able to download new software thursday. the cars will be able to parallel park on their own and change lanes automatically when the turn signal is on. musk says the autopilot features are meant to be used on highways and relatively simple roads. for just the third time in decades, millions of social security recipients, disabled vets and retirees won't get an increase in benefits next year. >> inflation just not a factor.

let's get the rest of the news before the bell. landon dowdy is live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> scott and laura, good monday morning to you both. stocks start the week off with a little bounce. futures are higher ahead of the open. the markets just measured by the s&p 500 index are coming off the best week of the year. earning season really gets under way this week with several big names expected to drive action on wall street with results from jpmorgan, bank of america, citigroup, intel and ge. on friday the dow rising 33 points to 17084. the nasdaq closing up 19 to 4830. gas prices barely budging in the past two weeks and even as oil prices rose and an industry survey rose the national average fell half a cent and that's down 52 cents since mid-june and more than 90 cents from a year ago. i bet you never thought the low gas prices would be a bad thing, but here's why.

san francisco south bay and peninsulas at 57 degrees. a look at the highs this afternoon, up to 93 degrees in the tri-valley today. and the peninsula a high of 80 degrees in san francisco topping out at 78. let's go hour by hour in san francisco because the at 8:00 we're at 59 degrees and we feel those cool temperatures quickly warming up by lunchtime. it's 71 degrees and 78 degrees at 2:00 and then we'll be in the upper 70s so great weather for doing the ship tours or taking in the fleet week festivities. as we head into the middle of the week. chance of rain in the forecast and the models really aren't handling this well. much larger chance of rain heading into the weekend and i know it will the weekend, but we do need this rain, hopefully this all does come to pass. because our temperatures are well above averaour oaverage fos time of year, 78 degrees in livermore. up to 96 degrees tomorrow. just unreal for this heat and then it comes back down for the

end of the week after that chance of rain. looking ahead to that weekend forecast, once again, we'll be tracking a chance of showers. mainly on wednesday and then again on saturday. maybe some lightning, too. and thatens on saturday with those temperatures coming down to the mid-70s. on sunday things clear out and it will be nice and cool and there is your fall, scott and laura. it is coming back on sunday. i'll send it over to mike to see what's happening now at the bay bridge. >> i love how it comes, the fall comes to visit and then kind of takes a little break and comes back in, again. that's good stuff. over here folks start to come in for work on westbound 580 and slow off that 880 overcrossing. your left approach, look at that, folks, very easy. we'll also show you on the maps some slowing coming into the area and saw a lot of slowing heading up between 24 and grand avenue. started to ease as far as the speed sensors go and should be clearing the road crew and more information. a slight delay for that to pick up. over here highway 4, stepping

exclusive: ==laura/ots== when federal workers blow at 5:23. now to an investigative unit exclusive. when federal workers blow the whistle about safety issues, regulators are supposed to respond swiftly to those complaints to protect the public. but our investigative unit uncovered data showing what actually happened. we looked at all the complaints filed with osha's whistleblower protection program. it took osha more than a year to investigate and close out those complaints. the law says it's supposed to be done in 90 days or less and we learned fewer than 2% of the cases osha investigates actually result in a positive finding of merit for the whistleblower.

travel nightmare not over just yet. southwest airlines is warning people to be ready for a second straight day of delay. >> kris sanchez is live at maneta and having a trickle effect even today. >> we're seeing a lot ofs arriving two hours early, which is the advice of southwest airlines for people who are traveling on southwest today. any airport across the nation. so, even if you're leaving today, you get lucky, you might have a delay later on if your itinerary continues on a second flight. this is all because of a computer flitch that surfaced on sunday. passengers here at maneta san jose did not have the worst of it. delays here that were less than at oakland and san francisco. adding to the frustration, they didn't understand why they were being delayed sometimes for hours. now we know that it was a computer glitch that shut down the southwest airlines website. and the ticket centers and that forced the airline workers to check everybody in manually. take a look at the impact down

get to the airport two hours early. at maneta san jose, kris sanchez. >> thanks. also new this morning, the all-clear for an east bay shopping center that was shut down for several hours last night because of a bomb threat. pleasanton police say someone called the home depot at the pleasanton shopping center and told the employee there there was a bomb in the store. this happened around 6:00 last night. evacuated the store along with surround oing businesses and an intense search by bomb sniffing dogs turned up nothing suspicious. the shopping center shut down for about twos. 5:32. oakland's homicide rate is on the rise. a gunman shot and killed two men in the city's swissvale district over the weekend. the gunman opened fire on 22 and 24-year-old before running away. sadly the victims died at the scene. no motive has been released. the double homicide happened on foot hill boulevard near 36 avenue and it brought the number of killings in oakland to 77 this year. there were 61 homicides at this

time last year. oakland police leaving his injured 6-year-old daughter trapped inside. kelvin gowan wanted for robbery there thursday. chased him to oakland and that when police say he crashed that car, ditched it and his daughter will have to have surgery because of her injuries. still a lot of questions this morning after a bicyclist was hilt and killed by a muni bus in san francisco yesterday afternoon. he said the photos from scene. the crash happened on market street near the montgomery street b.a.r.t. station. he lost his balance and fell. he was crushed by one of the bus tires. police are still investigating who was at fault. it's not clear whether the buses wered to be even moving at the time. they're looking at surveillance video and reviewing witness statements. happening today, a lot of officers on the streets of santa rosa all part of a safety

enforcement operation. watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists. extra officers on duty throughout santa rosa focusing on areas with a high number of accidents. people in one san jose neighborhood have a hawk to thank for making the streets safer. high intensity activated crosswalk. being tested at snail avenue and once the button is pushed it flashes a series of yellow and red lights and gives those pedestrians time to cross and lots of warning. some drivers say it takes a little getting used to. several hawks will be ruled out across the bay area. well, making the golden gate bridge safer. here's a live look at the bridge. a suicide barrier one step closer to reality. bridge official os say they'll start looking for a construction firm for the job tomorrow. a company could be chosen as early as march, which means groundbreaking could follow in a matter of weeks. the suicide barrier is expected to take three years to build.

it will cost about $76 million. sonoma county leaders taking a unique approach and tackling the homeless problem and using federal homeless money. supervisors will propose a plan to rethe county's $2.5 million from the city of housing and urban development and use it for homeless housing. it also receives funding priorities. if you live in the east bay and notice your water tastes slightly different this morning, don't worry, it's still clean water. that's because the san francisco public utilities commission is looking at some changes to the regional water system. they're testing out an aquadicate that hasn't been used in 30 years. crews are making sure it still works in case we have another dry year. the tests will last until wednesday. the water is safe to drink, but chilling it might cut down on some of the odor and provide a better taste. well, it was a feeding frenzy in san francisco bay.

we have video of it. the video we're about to show you may be disturbing to watch. >> oh, my gosh. >> yeah, these are visitors from alcatraz. they caught what appears to be a white shark at lunchtime. we're told it happened around noon saturday. the shark was apparently eating a seal. white sharks akag s occasionalle seen in the bay. >> and a combination. it is 5:36 right now. want to check the forecast. pretty nice weekend we're coming off of, kari. >> still be warm today as we go hour-by-hour in san jose. all of this sunshine will heat up those temperatures at 11:00. 74 degrees and 79 degrees at lunchtime and then into the upper 80s very quickly throughout the afternoon as you head home for dinner it will be 86 degrees and a lot of sunshine today, once again. foster city 84 degrees and dolores heights at 77 degrees and 90 today in santa rosa and

oakland 84 and danville topping out at 91 degrees today. sunshine today, hot weather continues into tomorrow and then a chance of rain. i'll detail all of that coming up. let's check in now with mike to see what's happening out there now. >> we'll start with the bay bridge, again. because over the last 20 minutes, this is the area seeing the most changed and metering lights on and the toll plaza approach is still for all lanes to about the 880 overcrossing approaching west grand. look at your map, a complication now for 580 because up to west grand starting back at lake shore. we are significant slowing but we are told the crews are clearing. we see the slower vehiclesing a slower speed sensor read and traveling through basically at speed over the next 15 to 20 minutes and recovering by 6:00. the rest of your bay area shows a smooth drive and over on the shoulder and a live look at fremont shows you the easy drive to the south bay, no problems. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. happening today, it is that time of year, again. where pumpkin farmers come together to see who ranks

supreme. the annual half moon bay heavyweight championship of the monster gorge is getting under way this morning. but this year, the pumpkins might be a little smaller. >> our senior pumpkin correspondent bob redell is live in half moon bay with more. good morning, bob. >> scott and laura. i mean, we hear some could be smaller but when you look at them here we'll be doing the weigh off later on this morning. we have very some very large pumpkins there in the background and this one, a farmer just came over and pounded on it, man, i feel like this is going to be the one. steve, you won in 2003. that was a number of years ago. how are you feeling about this? one of your competitors came over and seems to think this one is the one so far. >> until the weigh-in happens, we don't know. we're pretty happy with it. >> you can measure and then get an estimate. >> in the mid-1,800. >> when it weighs in 2,300

you'll be like, i can't believe that. >> i the way you think. that would be great. that's what we all hope for. but, you know, we'll see. couple hours. >> you don't have a dramatic a drought in oregon as we have in california. so, i imagine that helps you. what are the growing conditions like up there and what are you seeing compared to your california competitors? >> you know, we just read about california. so, we aren't experiencing it, but we are here for our buddies down here. we're in a drought, too, but not to the level you are. we did have some snow in the mountains and we have reservoirs that had water and they're all low now. and the wells are, they aren't in great shape, but certainly not to the level you are. so, you know, how it affected us didn't really affect us much. >> best of luck to you. so far, being as objective as you possibly can. does yours seem to be the biggest of the ten that we've seen out here? >> tough call.

>> oh, bob. great gourds. thanks. a treasure-trove to the past hidden right under our noses. this is really cool. you may not have known about this. hundreds of thousands of fossils are getting a new life in the east bay. they have been hidden for most of the century right under the uc berkeley bell tower. only a few select have keys to this restricted area. there are saber-tooth skulls and mammoth tusks. scientists at berkeley say the fossils are key to understanding the california ice age some 30,000 years ago. >> we've hadles in california. we had mammoths and mastodons and giant saber-tooth cats. >> been removed and brought down here and out and cleaned and measured and analyzed. >> experts say the bones could reveal why these animals are extinct and why humans and climate change changed their lives. >> pretty cool. coming up, heading back to

governoroed a measure that supporters said would have made it easier for terminally ill patients to receive experimental treatments and so-called right to try act there drugmakers to let patients near death more easily obtain drugs that had not been cleared by the fda. the fda already allows compassionate use access, which governor brown mentioned in that veto. but the right to try proponents say that application process takes too long for the gravely ill. last week governor brown signed the right to die law. that does allow terminally ill patients to end their lives using doctor prescribed drugs. now employees at twitter could be worried about job security as they head back to work this week. our sister blog said it is not clear how many cuts will be made but it comes just days after jack dorsy was named permanent ceo. the twitter layoffs will reportedly be company wide in the engineering department in particular. san francisco-based company has

napa starts out the day at 52 degrees. heading into the day. here's a look at the wind forecast and the direction of the winds shown by the arrows and the numbers show you the wind speeds and miles per hour. not much of a wind today. and it's coming in from the north. so, not much of an ocean breeze today. so, nothing to help cool us off, especially for those inland areas. as we go hour by hour inland, at 7:00, we're at 55 degrees and 9:00, 65. jumping up to 74 by 11:00. and bright sunshine continues into the afternoon with a light wind. and temperatures warming up to the low to mid-80 there. and high pressure keeps us warm. just to the east of us. so, we will have 70s along the immediate coast and mid-80s for the inner bay and then the tri-valley up into the 90s today. we may see a few spots touching 100 degrees tomorrow. and then the heat backs off. as we will have a chance of showers. but the models really aren't handling this well, but they are picking up on another chance of rain heading into saturday.

any slow downs yet is the. >> kari, start with our live look for 880 and this is fine for the oakland area here. look at the volume with those headlights south down towards hayward. look at your map now in the opposite direction heading towards the bay bridge is slow for 580. your other freeway through oakland hills and other slowing through that earlier construction zone that continues to clear up. the backup at the bay bridge, that does not clear. the metering lights are on and that's theered flow coming off the east shore freeway. here the castro valley and nimitz freeway shows a standard bill there and the same thing for south 680 through pleasanton. that build as folks head west across the san mateo bridge, more slowing through the peninsula and still at speed all. the south bay sloan slowiwing f and hitting, again, about 6:30 this morning. holding steady and, of course, you guys are talking about that over the morning. back to
