is entertaining, but i don't think it's entertaining when somebody insults immigrants, insults women. >> reporter: at center stage tonight, clinton's main priority to avoid mistakes in the headlines. then there's the ongoing e-mail controversy. while partisan sniper has undercut the house benghazi committee, clinton will try to argue the scandal is fueled by republican attacks, with the last round of her personal e-mails being released just three days before the iowa caucuses. and clinton will try to deliver a message to joe biden, still toying with a run of his own, that despite the controversy, she still a safe bet. finally, can clinton connect with voters? with clinton facing criticism as a washington insider, she'll argue as a woman she's the true outsider candidate. and later she's deployed self-deprecation to soften her

raking in big dollars. the question remains is he going to attack hillary clinton? he hasn't until now. will that all change tonight? the fire brand democratic socialist is getting used to the huge crowds. but this is a whole new stage. their preparation is as different as the candidates' styles. hillary clinton's had her washington super lawyer playing bernie sanders in mock debates. sanders has stuck to briefing books. now in the biggest debate of his life, how will the surging sanders take on the democratic front-runner? >> obviously differences of opinion they should be discussed. >> reporter: will sanders get personal in he says he won't but he will call clinton out for veering left, flip-flopping and will he sharpen his attack of her being backed by wealthy donors? and he says he isn't too far

left to be in the campaign, especially after this comment to chuck todd on "meet the press." >> people will have to contrast my consistency and my willingness to stand up to big corporations against hillary clinton. >> are you a capitalist? >> no, i'm a democratic socialist. >> thousands have turned out at campuses around the country. tonight he'll have to prove his presence can resonate with a wider audience. until now bernie sanders has stood by his principles. >> thank you. we're joined now by nicole n msnbc contributor and former adviser to george w. bush. good morning to you. >> good morning. big night. >> are you expecting a slug fest or sober policy seminar? >> well, you know, i'm on the other side but i feel nervous for hillary clinton.

she's in the same unenviable position of being the democratic party's head candidate but not heart candidate. once again somebody else has captured the passion of the democratic party. when it happened eight years ago, when barack obama captured their imagination, you sort of felt bad for hillary. if she makes the mistake again of not capturing the passion that bernie sanders, she'll only have herself to blame. >> what can you do in a situation like that? >> i think preparing hillary clinton is different. you have to get a candidate like hillary clinton out of her head space and into that loose, almost like the val character from snl last weekend. but she has to avoid a major gaffe like the kinds she made on her book tour when she said she was flat broke when she left the

white house and had driven herself in almost 20 years. that is not where the democratic party is right now. they are in many ways more angry than the republican primary voters about a system they view as rigged and corrupt, a system that hillary clinton has been in the center of for 25 years. >> and bernie sanders obviously exploiting that feeling among democratic voters. but let's talk about the elephant in the room, joe biden. do you assume he's watching tonight and this is part of his calculus in determining whether to get in, how she does in the debate? >> yeah. you know him. you've interviewed enough politicians to know that every politician that watches debates the same way, they yell at the television. whether he gets in or not, he's going to be having choice words at the performance of all of them. at the end of the day i believe he is going through an excruciating process of balancing his grieving process with his desire to continue to

serve the country he loves. there's no doubt he has an opening should he wish to take it. >> he's up against the political calendar more and more. nicole wallace, it's always good to talk to you. >> thank you. >> there was a tragic fire in kansas city overnight that took the life of two firefighters. natalie has to story. >> there was a massive fire that is still smoldering this morning. this morning officials in kansas city, missouri are investigating a two-alarm fire at an apartment building that killed two firefighters and injured two others overnight. fire crews dispatched around 7:30 p.m. found the structure heavily damaged by smoke and flames. >> when we arrived on the scene, we had two individuals in the structure. from there we went to an option of attack, conditions changed, we had to pull out of the

building. >> those two people were rescued from the second floor of the building. as the firefighters were pulling back from the structure, a wall gave way, killing two firefighters instantly. two other firefighters were transported to the hospital. >> they saved two civilians carrying them out of the second floor on ladders before the wall collapsed. they did not die in vain. >> the firefighters are 27-year-old larry. ledgeio and 13-year veteran john mesh. >> now to a confrontation in north carolina. at g-- allegations that they mae threats outside a children's birthday party. pete williams has the story. >> reporter: good morning to you.

they are part of a group call respect the flag. in an incident partly caught on cell phone video, prosecutors say seven pickup trucks flying confederate flags drove up to a family birthday party in late july in douglasville, a small town west of atlanta. witnesses say 15 people charged, ten men and five women yelled racial slurs at the african-american men at the party, including children and threatened violence. some brandished weapons. four of the people identified said in july that the party-goers started it, throwing rocks and yelling at the convoy. all 15 are charged with violating street gang and terrorism prevention law and making terroristic threats. those are serious charges with a

maximum sentence of 15 years. georgia does not have a hate crime law. the southern law center said people were terrorized in an act reminiscent of the ku klux klan. >> thank you very much. >> let's turn back to natalie with a breaking story out of the middle east. >> israel's prime minister is calling an emergency security meeting after a new wave of deadly violence escalated overnight. john yang is covering the events for us from london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. right now the death toll in israel stands at three in four separate attacks. police say the deadliest came in a pair of attacks in jerusalem. in one palestinians got on a bus and started shooting and stabbing passengers. in the second, a driver rammed his bus into a bus station and got out and stabbed pedestrians. this is just the latest in

escalating violence across israel and west bank. at least 7 israeli ass and 29 palestinians killed in the past four week. >> thank you, john. in the netherlands, investigators looking into the downing of mh17 showed a haunting recreation of the plane. investigators concluded it was brought down by a russian-made buk missile that exploded less than three feet from the cockpit. it did not conclude who fired it. the 198 people on the board they said lost consciousness as soon as the missile hit. >> three years ago the supreme court barred sentences for life without parole for those under 18 when they committed crimes

and now they'll decide whether that should apply to those sentenced before the 2012 ruling. dell is buying emc for a whopping $67 billion, the biggest price tag for a tech merger in history. it helps dell expand beyond the computer market into data storage, mobile and other fields, which it calls the fastest growing area of the tech industry. and a daring rescue caught on camera shows how far firefighters will go to save a little. tim tawater was off duty on saturday when he saw this fire at a neighbor's house. he went in and got the dog. he said he didn't do it for a pat on the back but because it needed to be done. that's the kind of neighbor you want to have. >> it's amazing he was able to walk out of there.

>> i just saw a girl on periscope driving drunk. >> reporter: the dispatcher wasn't sure what the caller was talking about. >> she's driving really fast. you can see it. >> what's periscope? >> reporter: police are learning that after a recent survey that 8 of 10 law enforcement professionals use social media for investigations and almost three quarters believe it can help solve cases more quickly. sometimes the police are helped by suspects with more social media skills than smarts. this man took video of himself robbing a bank and posted it to instagram. shortly before being arrested. these guys stole a computer and cash. then used the computer to brag about what they did by posting it to facebook. this sarasota police department was recognized for effective use of social media in crime fighting. >> criminals sometimes give us clues as to what their criminal activity behavior is. they post things on social media

news... ==top map== a very good tuesday morning to you. it is 7:55. we do have breaking news this morning. police are at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run in san jose. it happened a little after 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of south white road. the area is just a couple of blocks from james lick high school. so far police are saying nothing about the identity of the victim or the type of vehicle police are looking for. we have a crew at the scene. much of south white road is completely shut down this morning. another developing story. fast moving wildfire grown to 300 acres burning about three miles south that fire started yesterday afternoon at an area. this morning firefighters tell us it is still burning out of control and so far no reports of

and a half hours. a mistake could be particularly damaging and the clinton campaign knows that. natalie, back to you. >> peter alexander. thank you, peter. today a safety board in netherlands out with report on downing of airliner mh-17. the board showed a haunting reconstruction from the front of the plane rebuilt from wreckage and recovered in eastern ukraine. investigators concluded the plane was brought down by a russian buk missile that exploded 3 feet from the cockpit. it did not conclude who fired it. the people on the plane were killed or lost consciousness as soon as the missile hit. tragedy during the night in kansas city, kansas city mourning two firefighters who died in the line of duty. the fire department arrived to find intense flames shooting out of that apartment building. the firefighters were killed when part of the building collapsed. they just rescued two people

from the second story. firefighters rushing to a raging wildfire in boise. the walker fire burned more than 3,000 acres but now burning into areas of heavy timber and away from home. helicopters are dropping water on the fire in an effort to keep it from spreading. 15 supporters of the confederate flag facing charges in georgia. they are accused of making terroristic threats by driving by an african-american family's birthday party back in july with flags waving, allegedly yelling racial slurs. the incident caught on cell phone video. some witnesses say members of the group respect the flag, also had weapons. they are accused of violating georgia's street gang and terrorism law. a new bride and her husband took a detour on the way to their wedding reception after taking lots of pictures at their tennessee wedding they got word that the father of the bride and two other family members, including the grandmother, had been in an accident. that's when the bride still in her wedding dress raced to the scene.

sarah and her husband are both emts. she jumped into the back of the ambulance to make sure her grandmother was all right. everyone injured will be okay but the photo of the bride, emt and her wedding dress viewed by more than a million people on facebook and now by millions more right here. lots of people liking that picture. she said she was just checking up on her family. >> all right. >> lucky groom, too. >> natalie, thank you so much. now to a story touching but seemingly impossible. >> two sisters separated 40 years ago in korea now working on the same floor in the same hospital in florida. tamron has got that. >> this is beyond incredible. she searched for the sister she knew she had for four decades. she finally found her in her friend and co-worker megan. it a story that crosses continents and has many coincidences. >> i just cried and cried. i'm sorry. >> it's a reunion 40 years and

this is hen of the woods. have you used that crazy mushroom? chantarelle are delicious. oyster mushrooms and these odd ones. these are royal trumpet mushrooms. >> wow. >> chop them up like this. you need about one and a quarter pounds. stir them with a half a stick of butter, three garlic gloves and one white or yellow onion. add the soaked porcini to those. saute until they look like this. beautiful. >> i would eat that. >> that's great over pasta. you would like that. >> the last step is what? >> this is the farrow. it's now tender. see how it gets swollen and splits up. add your mushrooms. >> the smell is amazing. >> unbelievable, right? >> i want a room fragrance like that. >> if you like -- oh, i turned it up to 20. turn it down to zero.

"today in the bay's" bob redell joining us live from the scene. bob, what are police telling you? >> reporter: well, we just found out within the past couple of moments, sam, that san jose police have an image of the suspect vehicle that was captured by a local surveillance camera. from what they have seen on that surveillance camera, it appears the suspect vehicle was trying to beat traffic when they turned on to white road. then what the camera doesn't show is the impact with an older man who is still out here on white road. unfortunately, deceased. and that track took off down westbound on florence court, which is one of the cross streets here. so the latest suspect vehicle
