it was so hot yesterday afternoon, just unbearable out there. as we go into today, we will start out with warm temperatures and still a very warm afternoon. talking upper 80s in the north bay and the south bay. the peninsula and south bay will be 84 to 85 degrees, and very warm in san francisco, too. we're tracking a couple of storm chances in the forecast. i'll detail that coming up. let's check in with mike. how is it looking in the east bay? >> very easy. i want to show folks oakland our view southbound toward 98. we don't see slowing, but a crew in san leandro to the south. no drama from 580. this one incident is 680 northbound of highway 4. reports of smoke and maybe flames with a truck. it's counter commute. it could be a distraction. send it back to you. breaking overnight.

a deadly scene unfolding in the streets of san jose. we just learned a third person has now died after a car crash late last night. all of this happening off east santa clara street and 22nd street in the outskirts of downtown san jose. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live on the scene. now a third person has died? >> reporter: we know three people have died and we know they were all juveniles and there is still one more juvenile who is in the hospital in very critical condition this morning. you can see here behind me that the crime scene cleaners are out here. they are trying to remove the rest of the debris from the scene. what a horrific crash. if you look at the video from last night, there was at least one vehicle that was smashed beyond recognition, the silver color was the only thing you could recognize. officers on the scene tell us there were two cars that were driving side by side at a high rate of speed. they're not ready to say it was

a street race, but that they were driving very fast here on east santa clara street when one of them veered off, first into a pole and then smashed into a tree. sadly three of those young people were killed, two of them died right here at the scene. one of them died at the hospital. we can tell you they are three young men and one young woman. the one person who is in critical condition is a young man. they are looking for the folks who were in the other car. they want to know how it is that they came to be driving so quickly side by side in that westbound direction. but again, police are not calling it specifically a street race at this point. so if you saw anything, police would like to talk with you. they have been able to talk to a number of witnesses because east santa clara street is a very busy street even at night when this crash happened. santa clara still closed between 21st and 24th as the crew that's clearing the crime scene gets

their work done. so it should be opening in the next couple hours or so. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> terrible day for many families, no question. new this morning, a possible squak swarm in san ramon. you're looking at our quake map. there have been recorded 18 small quakes in the area of san ramon just within the last 24 hours. they've ranged in magnitude from .8 to 2.9. no word on any injuries. >> happening today, three drifters will face a judge for the first time since allegedly murdering two people. police say the trio are responsible for killing canadian tourist audrey carey and steve carter last week. of the trarjs being filed against them and will have the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty. 23-year-old morrison lampley, 24-year-old sean angold and legal that allgood, will be charged with the murder of audrey carey and steve carter, a 67-year-old therapist also found shot to death last week on a marin county trail. the marin county district attorney just revealed in carter's case it was morrison lampley who allegedly pulled the trigger. >> in a course of a crime where they're all joined, if someone is what we call vicariously liable they could be held responsible in the case of a shooting forshooter's conduct. >> even if they didn't pull the trigger? >> even if they didn't pull the trigger. >> reporter: giving the special

circumstances of lying in wait, lampley and the two others are eligible for the death penalty. the district attorney has agreed to try both cases together in marin even though one of the murders took place in san francisco. when the trio was arrested last week in portland, oregon, they found them with steve carter's vw station wagon and a gun that police say is the same caliber as the one used in both of those murders. live in marin, bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:05 right now. nbc bay area has learned the brutal attack on a hotel made and suicide of a hotel guest in san francisco are linked. it happened sunday at the marriott marquee. her co-workers found her missing. when police arrived they found her in a pechbt house suite, badly beaten and suffering from life-threatening injuries. that man is now at sf general.

a man suspected of the attack jumped to his death at the hotel. >> as we conducted the investigation, we found evidence at the crime scene that links the assault to an apparent suicide that had happened earlier. >> the apparent suicide victim is 26-year-old alexander damhouse seen her in his linkedin photo. according to his profile, he was the communications director for the cardio vass already research foundation convention being held at the marriott. police haven't released the victim's name. intense moments at a san leandro walmart. police say a man sprayed a rack of halloween costumes with lighter fluid and caught them on fire. the costumes just went up in flames. >> [ inaudible ].

that's my biggest concern, seeing that the fire was pretty big and people may have inhaled smoke. >> that's pretty frightening. luckily no one was hurt. security guards managed to catch the suspect who is believed to be from oakland. police arrested him on suspicion of arson. it's still a mystery as to why he set those costumes on fire. >> days before the escape from alcatraz triathlon will take place right near a recent shark attack. a security crew caught the shark with the seal in his mouth. triathlon organizers are monitoring for shark activity. >> the chatter is it's going to be an interesting saturday morning. i think people have some nerves about going in the water.

that was a pretty big pool of red blood there by alcatraz. >> that would be disconcerting if you're participating in the triathlon. >> it's believed to be the first white shark attack in the bay area ever caught on camera. research shows it's not the first time a white shark has been in the bay and it probably will not be the last. with the possibility of el nino bringing heavy rainfall this winter, leaders of five agencies will meet today to discuss winter preparedness and flood protection efforts. almost hard to believe with the drought we've been having. members of the joint power authority are concerned about potential flooding issues if the heavy rains materialize. the s today's meeting takes place in east palo alto. >> maybe they're opinion

took the stage for their first presidential debate last night. decision 2016, all five democratic candidates took the stage for their first presidential debate last night. it was no question the hillary and bernie show. who reigns supreme with voters. tracie potts joining us from washington, d.c. with a buzz about who may have won. who is getting the highest marks this morning, tracie? >> really both of them. online lots of strong comments about hillary clinton and her performance. she came in and handled some of the tough issues in a way that didn't create more controversy. bernie sanders in some of the polls, unscientific, of course. but he's getting high marks including one comment that probably helped him and clinton. >> the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails. >> reporter: it was one of the most memorable moments of the democrats' first debate and one

of the reasons netface reports this morning that bernie sanders got more hits online than any other candidate. he also got the highest positive ratings during the debate followed by former maryland governor martin o'malley. o'malley charm challenged hillary clinton on creating a no-fly zone over syria. >> i believe a no-fly zone over syria at this time would be a mistake. >> reporter: they say clinton gained the most support during the debate. she slammed the benghazi committee as partisan and challenged bernie sanders on gun control. >> he was going to give immunity to the only industry in america. everybody else has to be accountable, but not the gun manufacturers. >> reporter: lincoln chafee questioned clinton's yes vote on the iraq war. >> if you're going to make those poor judgment calls, that's an indication of how someone will perform in the future.

>> the growing concern that unmanned drones could interfere with commercial flights or be used in a terrorist attack is being put into focus by law enforce: a new task force made up of members of the fbi and faa is gathering at miami international airport in hopes of battling this potential problem. authorities say a jetblue pilot making the approach to land in south florida reported seeing an unmanned aircraft at 5,000 feet above ground which aviation experts say is extremely high altitude for a drone. the faa says from january to august of this year, there were 764 encounters between drones and manned aircraft. >> we need to actually come together and be able to work in a collaborated effort to minimize any risk factor that's out there. >> the task force is expected to present new drone regulations by the end of the year.

new this morning, uber is the latest company to link to the amber alert child abduction system. the drivers will receive geographically targeted alert when any amber alert is issued. apple, google and facebook partner with amber alert. >> uber launching a delivery service in san francisco. >> the company just announcing that it has tested the idea in new york, now bringing uber delivery to san francisco. they call it uber rush. the basic idea is when uber drivers aren't delivering people, they could deliver stuff. >> it's so flexible. the product doesn't have to fit in a little bag or in a box. it can be dry cleaning, clothes on a hanger, a wedding dress or bridesmaid dress on a hanger. it can be a cake or a pizza, it can be flowers from a florist. it really is flexible. >> uber will use its current fleet of cars, but it will also

homes on fire in florida. someone caught this aftermath with their cell phone. a plane crash set two mobile homes on fire in florida. someone caught this aftermath with their cell phone. the plane came falling from the sky, burst into flames and collided with two homes in palm beach county yesterday. while officials have yet to confirm deaths, a man told our nbc affiliate his daughter was in one of the mobile homes and died in the crash. the red cross is helping ten people who can't live in their homes. nearly 24 hours later and officers in the south bay are looking for a hit-and-run driver. police believe this man was driving a car that struck and killed a 60-year-old man in san jose yesterday. this screen shot is taken from surveillance video from a nearby bakery. you see the suspect right there. employees say the suspect bought a pastry roughly 30 minutes before the crash. the deadly collision happened on white road in east san jose a few blocks away from james lick

metering lights. it's about that time for wands. look at your maps and we see no problems on the maze or the approach. upper east shore looks nice across the carquinez bridge. the fog is lifted above the golden gate bridge. the south bay, a live look at san jose and show you the volume. does have the first burst kicking in right here. this is not a major concern. you guys do have a situation, a very serious one not far from here. >> it is, breaking news we're following this morning, an overnight crash in san jose that killed three and critically injured another. it happened off east santa clara street and 22nd late last night. investigators stayed on scene well into the morning. >> "today in the bay's" chris sanchez live on scene. you have new information about the people killed in this crash. >> reporter: we know all three people who died in this horrific crash were teenagers and one more teenager, a young man is in critical condition in the hospital this morning. not surprising, the car i saw

t towed off was smashed beyond recognition. hard to tell even what kind of car it was. this is what police found around 11:00 as officers arrived for this deadly crash. they tell us it look like the two cars, that one and another were driving west on east santa clara street when one car, that silver sedan veered into a pole and then smashed into a tree. the driver of the other vehicle did not remain at the scene. that car, described as a red sedan. police say the two drivers were speeding, it appears, but they are not calling this a street race at this point. a young woman and young man died right here at the scene. another young man died at the hospital where that fourth young man is in critical condition this morning. we also know that san jose police cuffed at least one person about 100 yards last night. we captured that on video. police aren't ready to tell us

whether it's related to the crash nor whether that person was ultimately arrested. one eastbound lane of east santa clara street remains closed this morning. you can see they're doing the last bit of cleanup on the scene, checking the power pole there. it should reopen shortly. traffic in the other direction is already flowing. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 5:32. new this morning, a possible quake swarm in san ramon. this is a look at our quake map on nbcbayarea.com. there have been 20 small quakes in san ramon in the last 24 hours. the most recent less than 30 minutes ago. they range in magnitude from .8 to 2.9. no far no reports of injury or damage. some of the largest bay area transit agencies back up and running this morning this after a day of deadly crashes involving four trains in the span of just two hours. in san jose, a person died shortly after being hit by a vta train around 4:30 yesterday. that train was heading

northbound when it struck the person just south of the fruitvale station. the tracks were closed for almost two hours. also in san bruno, a second deadly encounter, this one involving a b.a.r.t. train at the san bruno station. it shut down that station for almost two hours, causing major delays to trains headed to the east bay and sfo. two more crashes last night. an amtrak crash happened in santa clara about 4:30. the driver of the car suffered some injuries but is expected to be okay. a few minutes later a train hit a pedestrian at the san mateo caltrain station. the victim was al lived when rescued and rushed to the hospital. we don't know that person's condition this morning. three accused murderers set to face a judge for the deaths of two people in the bay area. all accused in the killing of tourist aud reese carrie and hikest steve carter with the

"today in the bay's" bob redell has more. >> reporter: all three of those defendants are expected at 9:00 inside marin county superior court to enter pleas in the murders of that tourist visiting from canada and a therapist hiking on a local trail. and given the special circumstances of lying in wait and murder while committing a robbery, morrison lampley, sean angold and lila allgood could be sentenced to the death penalty if convicted. yesterday carter's friends gathered at a small shrine that had been erected on the spot where he was killed. >> at least now we know who did

it even though it's awful and they were so lost to do something like that. at least we have the comfort of knowing there's not a murderer running around somewhere. >> reporter: last week law enforcement tracked down carter and carey's alleged killers to portland, oregon. police say the defendants when they were arrested had in their possession a gun that was the same caliber as the ones used in both murders, steve carter's vw station wagon and items belonging to carey. bob redell, "today in the bay." 5:35. police say one of the deputies charged with killing an inmate made questionable searches on the internet. all three deputies accused of killing michael tyree were in court. deputy maf real rodriguez made a number of searches online right after tyree's death. among other things, rodriguez looked up, quote, can you die if someone punches you in the armpit? our legal analyst said the new

information is a turning point. >> it shows that mr. rodriguez was trying to figure out what caused this death. but more importantly, they tend to establish that it was excessive force that caused tyree's death. >> the sheriff's department is not commenting saying it's an ongoing investigation. the three deputies will be back in court next month. one-time chinatown gangster already accused in a federal racketeering case now facing two murder charges. federal prosecutors added murder for soliciting a murder of a former leader in chinatown. two co-defendants are reportedly ready to flip on chow and testify he asked them to kill for him. chow's attorney says those witnesses are not credible. opening statements in the case are scheduled to begin in about three weeks. a man suspected of luring two women by posing as both a

modeling agent and then a doctor is now under arrest. investigators say gary chow sexually assaulted two women on separate occasions at a sequoia hospital. he works at a security supervisor at the hospital. police say he lured the women to the hospital by posing as a modeling agent on the internet. in both cases chow instructed women to take medical exams at the hospital. chow allegedly then posed as a doctor leading them to a utility room. no word from police if there are any other victims. in pleasanton an alert homeowner thwarted a burglary attempt when she heard knocking on her door followed by the sound of shattered glass. this happened before 10:30 on laurel creek drive. the woman ran out her door and immediately called 911ment when police arrived, they surrounded the home before chasing down two men who tried to escape over the back yard fence. vidal torres and israel diaz rondon are both from oakland. they were arrested on burglary,

conspiracy as well as the misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. a controversial plan now to put violent inmates on the front lines of california fires is no more because of safety concerns. california still looking for ways to increase its pool of potential firefighters. the state wants to expand its program to include inmates who have up to seven years left on their sentences. that's instead of the current five years. currently about 3800 inmates help professional firefighters in california. it's 5:38 right now. decision 2016, democrats squaring off last night in their first presidential debate. even though hillary clinton is the most experienced debater on stage delivered a polished performance, it's bernie sanders getting all the attention this morning. >> the american people are sick and fired of hearing about your damn e-mail. >> that is considered one of the most memorable moments of the debate. sanders was talking about clinton's private e-mail server scandal. that comment is the reason social media analysts say

his title was court ap ported anti-trust monitor. he came to apple in cupertino two years ago after apple was found liable in a price fixing scheme. court records show apple asked for too many meetings with executives. he said he was left out of too many meetings. the judge in the case said two years is enough. the babysitter goes home on friday. apple has a court date in wisconsin brought by the university of wisconsin which accuses the company of violeting some of the school's pat at the present times. the total fine could be almost a billion dollars. >> another ipo for a company called first data out of atlanta. nordstroms has pulled its ipo. the most recent public offering, mountain view pure storage had a terrible first day of trading. today finally trading above its

president kennedy helped found the peace corps back in 1961. people in the east bay will get a chance to walk a mile in the shoes of heroes later today. firefighters in hayward will hold a one-day orientation course for so-called everyday people. the training samd at giving the public a better understanding of what the fire department does on a daily basis, all the sacrifices those firefighters make. participants are going to wear authentic fire gear and take part in simulated fire drills. that training begins at 8:00 this morning at high ward's fire station number 6. after four years and several new waterman dates from the governor, the drought is becoming increasingly real for california. a new poll shows 76% of registered voters now consider the state's water shortage extremely serious, up from 66% in may of last year. more than half of registered voters say the drought is having a noticeable effect on their

warm even in the east bay. it's 70 degrees as you step out the door. as we take a closer look at the south bay, still 72 degrees, downtown san jose at 66 degrees and 62 degrees as you head farther across the south bay. into the day, this is what the radar and satellite could look like. this is our high resolution computer model picking up on the system moving in and the possibility of spotty rain. it will be very hit-or-miss. anything we do see today will be very hard to tell exactly where or when that could occur. you want to keep checking in for updates. at least we have wet weather in the forecast today. not everyone will see that. it will be later this afternoon. in the meantime, our temperatures will be heating up. still expecting a pretty warm day. we hit the peak of the heat yesterday. temperatures are slowly coming down. we are still looking at mid 90s in the tri-valley. our next chance of rain moves in on saturday ahead of a cold front. looks like we could also see

behind - after a small plane crashed, causing two mobile hes new video of the damage left behind after a small plane crashed causing two mobile homes to burst into flames. this happened yesterday at a mobile home park in florida. here is some cell phone video now which shows the chaos on the ground moments after the impact. you can see the massive flames coming from those homes. while officials have yet to confirm any deaths, a man told our nbc affiliate his daughter was inside one of the mobile homes and died in that crash. it's still too early to know the cause, but in this surveillance video you can see the plane actually flying sideways there over the trees as it seems to fall the ground. federal investigators are at the scene trying to unearth new information. new video of a white shark attack ag seal near alcatraz is giving swimmers something to

"today in the bay's" jean elle has more. >> reporter: a security camera on board an alcatraz ferry captures a white shark shooting out of the water with a seal in its mouth, a shark attack next to the island. captain chase corham. >> saw the blood in the water and saw the shark thrashing around. >> reporter: at the aquatic park, members are training for the escape from alcatraz triathlon. 59 swimmers are set to jump in the water. >> the chatter is, i think it's going to be an interesting saturday morning. that was a pretty big pool of red blood there by alcatraz.
