the bay area. highs today coming down from those 90s, but still very warm, in the upper 80s in the south bay and north bay. san francisco 77 and the tri-valley 93 degrees. i'll detail a chance of rain and storms in the forecast and also the trurgs as we head through the weekend coming up. let's check in with mike to see what's happening now as you head into san francisco. >> big surprises we have here. a slower drive from 580 and 24. new crash for highway 13. still get information as chp arrives on seen. hercules through san pablo. no big surprises as we're talking about for the flow. the earlier crash had me worried, west 580 at the dublin interchange. all lanes clear but the backup continues from el char row over to the scene. it will sort itself out there. 880 toward fremont and union city, a smooth drive into the south bay for your northbound

routes, there's 101 and 87 starting to build again in earnest. this shows more cars but no concern, still close to the limit there. back to you. we have an update to breaking news. this is what is left of a car following a violent overnight crash that still has part of a busy san jose street shut down this morning. we just learned three people killed were teenagers. >> this happened overnight near the corner of east santa clara and south 22nd. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us live from the scene. as laura said, a violent scene out there. do police have any idea why this car lost control? >> reporter: they are willing to say the two cars were going at a high rate of speed on east santa clara speed. they're not ready to call it a street race. they are looking for the folks who were in that other dark colored sedan, perhaps a red acura because they want to know what happened before this horrific crash.

we'll show you more of the scene this morning. this is what it was like as officers arrived around 11:00 last night. they tell us it appears the two cars were driving very fast again on east santa clara street when one of them, the silver sedan veered into a pole and into a tree. the driver of the other vehicle did not remain at the scene. again, officers want to see that car and the person driving it, they want to ask some questions. police say they were speeding, but again not calling it a speed race. a young woman and young man died here at the scene. another young man died at the hospital where a fourth teenager is also in critical condition this morning. we can also tell you that we did see san jose police cuffing one person about 100 yards away last night. police aren't ready to tell us whether that was related to this crash nor weather that person was ultimately arrested. again, if you are around this area around 11:00 last night and you saw this crash and you know the folks in that red sedan, the

acura, police would like to speak with you. in san jose, kris sanchez torques day in the bay. >> thank you very much. new this morning, some shaking across the bay area. take a look at the map on our nbc bay area website. in the last 24 hours there have been 20 small earthquakes in the san ramon area alone. the most recent about an hour ago. those little red circles indicate a separate quake. that's why it's called a shake map. most east of 680 near the crow canyon country club. the strongest was 2.9 that hit about 4:00 this morning. no reports of injuries or damage, but definitely rattled nerves. three suspects, two killings, two bay area counties. this morning they'll be in one marin county courtroom to face a judge for the first time. "today in the bay's" bob redell live in front of the marin county superior court. authorities say they know which suspect allegedly pulled the

trigger. >> reporter: according to the district attorney, sam, in about three hours inside marin county superior court, those three defendants will be formally charged with the crimes and will have the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty. talking 23-year-old morrison lampley, 24-year-old sean ang old and 18-year-old lila allgood. audrey carey was found shot to death in golden gate park on october 3rd, and steve carter, a 67-year-old therapist, also found shot to death last week on a marin county trail. the marin county d.a. revealed in carter's case it was morrison lampley who allegedly pulled the trigger. >> in the course of a crime where they are all joined, if someone is what they call vicariously liable as an aider and ab better in the commission of a crime, they can be held responsible in the case of a shooting for the shooter's conduct. >> even if they didn't pull the trigger?

>> even if they did not pull the trigger. >> reporter: given the special circumstances of lying in wait and murder while committing a robbery, lampley and his two co-defendants are eligible for the death penalty if convicted. you might also notice that the d.a. has agreed to try both cases here together in marin even though one of the murders took place in san francisco. when the trio was arrested last week in portland, oregon, law enforcement allegedly found them with steve carter's vw station wagon, items belonging the audrey carey and a gun that police say is the same caliber as the one used in both murders. live in marin, bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:05. now moving on to decision 2016. the spin pouring in this morning on last night's first democratic presidential debate, when it comes to the front-runners, consensus is bernie sanders may have picked up traction while hillary clinton did nothing to hurt her standings. when it came to the clinton

e-mail controversy, there was consensus among rivals. >> the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mail. >> kind of helping each other out. sanders with one of the debate's more memorable moments. analysts say sanders got more hits online than any other candidate. hillary clinton appeared to hold her own. both candidates spoke about how their leadership would differ from president obama's. >> i'm a progressive who likes to get things done. >> do the things that the middle class and working class desperately need is through a political revolution. >> i think being the first woman president would be quite a change. >> analysts say the other three contenders did little to improve their poll numbers. there's still another potential variable. vice president joe biden may decide as soon as this week whether he'll jump into the race. they didn't have to get the podium out for him last night. six more democratic debates, however, are scheduled. following the debate, hillary clinton's biggest fan tweeted his thoughts.

bill clinton, not surprisingly wrote, i'm proud of hillary clinton. tonight she showed why she should be president. meantime, republican presidential front-runner donald trump said he was going to be tweeting, and he was. he had a different view of the debate. he tweeted, sorry, there's no star on the stage tonight. we'll have more on the debate at 6:30. it's also the top story on our website. head to nbcbayarea.com or download our free app to find more reaction and analysis. nbc bay area has learned that a brutal attack on a hotel maid and the suicide of a hotel guest in san francisco are apparently linked. the attack happened sunday at the marriott marquee on 4th and mission streets. the woman's co-workers reported her missing when she couldn't be found until the end of her shift. they found her in a penthouse suite badly beaten. she's now at sf general. earlier in the morning a man suspected in the attack jumped

to his death at the hotel. >> as we conducted the investigation, we found evidence at the crime scene that linked the assault to an american suicide that happened earlier. >> the apparent suicide victim is 26-year-old alexander damhouse seen here in his linkedin photo. according to his profile, he was communications director for the cardiovascular research foundation convention being held at the marriott. police have not released the victim's name. a man supposedly posed as a modeling agent and a doctor and is now under arrest. investigators say gary chow separately assaulted two women at sequoia hospital in redwood city. he works as a security supervisor at that hospital. police say he lured the women to the hospital by posing as a modeling agent on the internet. in both cases he instructed the women to take medical exams at the hospital. he then posed as a doctor leading them to a utility room. no word if there are any other

victims. a man is under arrest accused of setting fire to kids' halloween costumes inside a bay area walmart. this is video from a shopper inside the store in san leandro. you see employees rush in to try to put out the flames. police say a 40-year-old man was walking around in the store's garden center earlier in the day. he picked up a bottle of charcoal lighting fluid, sprayed them on the costumes and then set them on fire. >> that's heartbreaking. i would have hated to see something o happen to someone in the store. that's my biggest concern. seeing that the fire was pretty big and people may have inhaled smoke. >> pretty frightening. those stores get busy. security guards held the suspect until police arrived. he was arrested on suspicion of arson. >> the holiday spirit isn't for everybody, but taking it a little to the extreme.

6:09. let's get a check of your mether with meteorologist kari hall who for the first time in a while has rain on the radar. >> yes, not in the bay area just yet, but a possibility we could see it later today. you can see the swirl of the clouds and a little bit of green in the mix. that will be moving toward us as we go into the afternoon. also keeping our temperatures down. looking in the futurecast, here we are at 1:30 this afternoon. it shows the possibility of spotty showers, some storms also possible. but there may also be that isolated lightning strike as well. we'll be watching out for that. no a lot of rain, but it will be very hit or miss. not all of us will see it. it is better than the searing heat. it will be warm with highs up to 86 in los gatos, palo alto 87. the castro at 76. in the north bay, more sun, still hot temperatures. up to 90 in napa.

plan to let inmates convicted of violent crimes - help firefighters i a controversial plan to let inmates convicted of violent crimes help firefighters is now being scrapped due to public safety concerns. state leaders introduced this idea earlier this week as a way to boost the numbers in california's inmate firefighting unit. the state still plans to expend the program to include those

with up to seven years left on their jail sentences or prison sentences, i should say, instead of the crept five years. as of now, only inmates convicted of non-violent crimes can participate. people in the east bay will get a chance to walk a mile in the shoes of heroes. firefighters in hayward would hold a one-day orientation course called fire ops 101. the training is aimed at giving the public a better understanding of what the fire department does. participants will wear authentic fire gear and take part in simulated fire drills. the training begins at 8:00 this morning at hayward fire station no. 6. from fire to floods with the possibility of a el known i don't bringing heavy rainfall this winter, leaders of five agencies will meet today in palo alto to discuss winter preparedness. members of the san fran skeet toe creek are concerned about potential flooding issues if those heavy rains do materialize. the floodplain covers about 50

square miles across the peninsula and the south bay. uber is launching a delivery service in san francisco. >> scott mcgrew, a ride for your dry cleaning. who gets to use it? >> everybody can use it, at least in the san francisco area. the company announcing this uber rush this morning. it tested the idea in new york city, bringing uber delivery to san francisco. the basic idea is when uber drivers aren't delivering people, they could deliver stuff. >> it's so flexible. the product doesn't have to fit in a little bag or box. it can be dry cleaning. clothes on a hanger. a wedding dress or bridesmaid dress on a hanger. it can be a cake or pizza, flowers from a florist. it is flexible. >> uber will use its current fleet of drivers but will also turn to bike messengers as well. this will work from the merchant side. your dry cleaner, your pizza place, your florist signs up. they deliver via uber car or

bike. it's invisible to you. it's not as if there will be a flower button on your uber app. lots of people in san francisco looking for new jobs after twitter laid off more than 300 on tuesday, mostly from the engineering department. twitter ceo sent out an e-mail explaining the lay-offs, but many people laid off didn't get the e-mail because twitter turned off their e-mail. had they been able to read their e-mail, they would have seen an e-mail from ceo jack dorsey explaining the lay-offs. there is a line that says the rest of the organization will be stream liepd in parallel. i talked to a twitter insider who say other jobs are on the bubble. your stock to watch this morning is netflix. the los gatos company reports profits after the closing bell. they recently announced a deal with virgin mayor canned also a price hike which we'll watch very carefully. the latest data we're getting show prices in america continuing to fall.

>> i'm surprised there was enough to go to trial. >> you hear that love hurts. >> i bet she's not invited next year. >> favorite aunt? maybe not. >> it's been so hot, where do you go from there, from like 90s yesterday. we're going downward. as we head closer to the weekend. now as we take a live look at the bay bridge from san francisco, we're getting the day started right. it's still fairly warm outside, and a few clouds starting to move back in. you may even see the fog if you're near the coast. it's 65 degrees in the south bay and peninsula. the north bay at 57 degrees. our temperatures warmer than average. here is a look at the highs this afternoon. not a lot of 90s but we will stop top out in the low 90s in the tri-valley. san francisco up to 77 degrees. here is the reason why. we have a swirl of clouds, a disturbance just to the west of los angeles. it will continue to move the north. as it moves ichb the bay area.

this is what our computer models show, the possibility of showers popping up early this afternoon. here we are at 1:30, we start to see wet weather moving in. very hit or miss. more clouds, cooler temperatures and a little better, but humidity will be higher as we go through the day. we will not only have that chance of rain, we'll also have another chance as we head into the weekend. this is what the computer models show with some possibility of higher humidity, some shades of blue there showing an increase in that humidity. it could be enough to bring some rain to the bay area. the estimated rain may be up to .10 inch for the far north bay, but the rest of us seeing some trace amounts. that's better than nothing. as we head into the weekend, our temperatures will be closer to average for this time of year. in the 70s and low 80s, it all clears out on sunday. we're talking about highs in the mid 70s across most of the bay area. still low 80s pour the tri-valley and the south bay. let's check in with mike to see

if there are any slowdowns pour the commute. >> nothing unexpected. you have your slowdowns, the bay bridge toll plaza being one of them. no surprise to anybody. you see a slower drive for 580 off 24. the earlier construction delays did not present a problem. now we just have your build. there's the stretch of the eastshore freeway. everywhere yellow speeds down to 55 or 60 miles per hour. the build for concord over near the walnut creek interchange. typical pattern except for this one crash. mini cooper rolled over and back on its wheels. no major injuries, but it's in a center divide and a huge distraction. the build for pleasanton an sunol just starting at 680. 680 through the fremont funnel, north 101 starts the building to get into san jose. we'll get a look at 880 past the truck scales. a nice easy flow. tracking down a hit-and-run driver, the photo san jose police say they want you to see. police are asking for the

black rims and a loud exhaust. 6:24. former nba and reality tv star lamar odom is in a las vegas hospital after he was found unresponsive inside a nevada brothel. police say two women found him passed out at the love ranch about 70 miles southwest of vegas. odom who is nearly seven feet tall was too big to fit in the helicopter and was instead driven by ambulance. no update on his condition this morning. odom is known for his years with the lakers and his four-year marriage to khloe kardashian. an attack happened after the conclusion of friday iet's play-off game. the unidentified man from bakersfield suffered a head injury and now in the hospital listed in critical condition. police are looking through surveillance video for more

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez live near the scene. police confirmed what witnesses already told us. this crash started as a street race? >> reporter: right, those three teenagers were killed in a street race and the car that they were racing in was a stolen car out of san jose. let's take a look at the scene last night. officers arrived to find this around 11:00 last night on east santa clara street. they now confirm, again, this was a street race earlier. they were just saying it was speed related earlier. two cars, a honda and acura were speeding when the driver of the

honda lost traction, spun out. that car then crashed into a pole and then smashed into a tree. the driver of a acura, possibly a red acura, did not remain at the scene. police are trying to locate the driver. a young woman and young man died here at the scene. another young man died at the hospital where there is still a fourth young man in critical condition this morning. we also know san jose police cuffed at least one person about 100 yards away last night, but police aren't yet ready to tell us whether that was related to this crash, nor weather that person was ultimately take ininto custody. traffic is all back to normal here, but still a lot of questions. the next of kin has to be notified before we learn the identities of these three young people, but we can say that they were in a stolen car. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:35. happening today, facing a judge for the first time. in a matter of hours, these three accused killers will step

gathered. >> i wanted to bless this trail so we could feel free now. i might still feel a little scared. >> at least now we know who did it, even though it's awful and they were so lost to do something like that. at least we have a comfort of knowing there's not a murderer running around somewhere. >> reporter: last week law enforcement tracked down carter's alleged killers. police tell us the defendants had in their possession, a gun the same caliber as the one used in both killings, steven carter's vw station wagon and items belonging to audrey carey. bob redell, "today in the bay." a series of tragedies at the largest bay area transit agencies. they're all back up and running this morning. it comes after a day of deadly crashes involving four trains in the span of two hours. in san jose a person died shortly after being hit by a vta train around 4:30 yesterday. the train was heading northbound when it struck the person just

south of the fruitdale station. the tracks were closed for nearly two hours. also in san bruno, a second deadly encounter, this time involving a b.a.r.t. train at the san bruno station. it happened around 6:00 last night, shutting down the trains for two hours causing major delays. also last night, a crash involving an amtrak and the other a caltrains. one happened at agnew road and lafayette street. the driver of the car suffered some injuries but is expected to be okay. then a few minutes later, a train hit a pedestrian at the san mateo caltrain station. the victim was alive when rescued. they were rushed to the hospital but we don't know their condition this morning. the weather has been hot but stable here so far this week, with maybe changes in the works. kari hall tracking all of those. >> looking forward to the changes. it will be cooler.

we'll have a couple chances of rain. the weather getting more active across the bay area and thanks to this, the upper level disturbance moving in. it's bringing spotty showers into parts of southern california. that moving closer to the bay area. this is what the computer models do with it. it brings in more clouds early afternoon and some spotty rain here and there. the rain chances do increase as we go into tonight and early in the morning as a lot of this energy continues to move in. that may be just enough to bring us a little bit of wet weather. we'll keep an eye on that. another chance of rain as we head into the weekend. i'll detail this coming up in less than ten minutes. let's check in with mike to see what's happening as you head out the door. >> foster city approach off the high wise westbound. behind me you see the flat section moving smogtly. in general, west 92 builds off 880 which is feeling the commute out of san leandro, making your

way to the peninsula. more sensors slowing, below 60 miles per hour northbound. dumbarton bridge volume starts to build. so does fremont. the south bay, we're looking at your northbound routes right now. 101 shows a slower drive from capitol expressway towards the airport. 87, 85 showing the slowdown. no incidents reported. the rest of the bay headed toward the walnut creek interchan interchange. there's the upper eastshore freeway. the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on. all lanes are full. a beautiful sunrise and an expected backup right there. >> glad you highlighted the sunrise there. amazing video of a shark attacking a seal in the san francisco bay. the reason researchers say this video is so special and rare next. more changes coming to twitter this morning and a new kind of razor. we'll take a look in business

new video of the damage left behind after a small plane crashes causing two mobile homes to burst into flames. this happened yesterday at a mobile home park in florida. here is cell phone video shows the chaos on the ground moments after impact. officials have yet to confirm any deaths, a man told our nbc affiliate that his daughter was in one of the mobile homes and died in that crash. it's still too early to know the cause of the crash. in this surveillance video you can see the plane coming in over the trees in the background of the video as it seems to fall to the ground. federal investigators at the scene this morning trying to learn more information. the nbc bay area learned the brutal attack of a hotel maid and the suicide of a hotel guest in san francisco rin willinged. the attack happened sunday at the marriott marquee on 4th and mission. the woman's co-workers reported her missing when she couldn't be found at the end of her shift. when police arrived they found her in a pept house sweet badly

here is a look at clouds from the satellite and a little green there on the radar. not bringing a lot of rain, but most of the system is still offshore and will be moving closer to our area as we go through the day. our temperatures are still really warm. look at the east bay in livermore. it's 68 degrees there in concord. in oakland 61 degrees, still in the mid 60s for the south bay and peninsula. here is what we're picking up on the futurecast. with that disturbance moving in and the clouds and the possibility of some rain in the forecast today, here we are at 2:00 in the afternoon, we can start seeing wet weather move into the area. it will be very hit-or-miss throughout the day. hard to tell who will see the rain and when. but at least we have activity going on. the high pressure keeping it hot moving off to the east and that area of low pressure with a chance of isolated storms, not only later today but early tomorrow. we'll have another chance as we head into the weekend.

inside a store in san leandro. you can see the employees rush in to put out the flames. police say a 40-year-old man was walking around the store's garden center earlier. they say he picked up a bottle of charcoal lighter fluid, sprayed it on the costumes, then set them on fire. luckily no one was hurt. >> a lot of families were in the store purchasing items for the kids for halloween, and that's something that's really heartbreaking. i would have hated to see something happen to someone in the store. and that's my biggest concern. seeing that the fire was pretty big and people may have inhaled smoke. >> a lot of smoke there. >> security guards held the suspect until police arrived. he was arrested on suspicion of arson. >> scary looking scene there. now to try to put out fires, wildfires and a followup to a controversial plan to let inmates convicted of violent crimes help firefighters. that's been scrapped due to

are dead - after what police are calli breaking news in the south bay. three teenagers dead after what police are calling a crash during a street race near downtown san jose. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at the scene. we got information about the car they were driving. >> reporter: not only did we learn that the three victims were all teenagers involved in a street race. we know they were racing a stolen car. it was reported stolen out of san jose. this is the scene that police arrived to before 11:00 last night, the car smashed beyond recognition, racing a dark colored acura around 11:00 last night police say. they say that's when the honda lost traction and spun out crashing into a pole and smashing into a tree.
