>> reporter: as jim webb and lincoln chafee struggled to break through. >> you're looking at a block of granite. >> reporter: before the debate was done. >> all the candidates are back, which i'm happy to see. >> reporter: clinton joked about barely squeezing in a bathroom break. >> it does take me a little longer. that's all i can say. >> reporter: a couple light moments last night. donald trump is weighing in this morning saying, like her or not, hillary clinton did her job. that email moment last night was not just good news for clinton but for sanders as well. he raised money off the debate. $1.3 million in just four hours. compare that to carly fiorina on the republican side. she raised that amount of money roughly in the first two months of her campaign. hillary clinton passes her first test. the next test is looming. eight days away. >> thank you. one of the biggest names in democratic politics was not on the stage in las vegas. of course, he was watching from home with time running out for him to jump into the race. did vice president joe biden see

anything last night that would help him make up his mind. let's get to christen welker on the biden watch this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. vice president biden was looking for a clear opening into the race last night, he didn't get it. many headlines this morning suggesting clinton boxed him out. even his supporters acknowledging privately to me secretary clinton had one of her strongest nights of the campaign. pressure is mounting, as you say, for biden to make a decision beings with his supporters growing increasingly impatient. the draft biden super pac released a powerful ad tuesday urging him to get into the race but biden was far from the action, watching the debate from his home. a source close to biden tells me the vice president is still undecided but knows he has to make a decision soon, possibly within the week. among the top considerations, making sure he has a realistic chance for winning the nomination and making sure his family is emotionally strong

enough after his son beau passed away in may. there was speculation that biden might announce his candidacy today. instead very different. his weekly lunch with the president and a round-table about infrastructure. >> thank you. republican frontrunner donald trump watched the democratic debate and decided to live tweet his thoughts to his followers. >> all very scripted and rehearsed. two at least should not be on the stage was one tweet. the hardest thing clinton has to do is defend her bad decision-making including iraq vote, emails, et cetera another one. here was a third. o'malley, as former mayor of baltimore has very little chance. this one. can anyone imagine chafee as president. no way. sorry, there is no star on the stage tonight, he sums it up. tonight donald trump takes a different kind of stage when he hosts "saturday night live" on november 7th. embassy nbc contributor nicole wallace served as communications director for former president george w. bush

and was a senior adviser to the mccain palin campaign in 2008. welcome back, nicole. >> thank you. >> we talked about going into the debate that it was hillary clinton's to lose. she had to avoid major gaffes. mission accomplished? >> she did what was most important for her campaign structurally. she stopped a lot of the hand-wringing among the democratic donor class, among the group that's desperate for biden to jump in. i think she went to a long way toward quieting those calls. having a more effective script, answer on the emails. i think she did everything she needed to do. >> a humongous assist from none other than her rival in the campaign, bernie sanders who decided to come to her defense on the email thing. everybody sick of talking about it. she ate that up and loved it. was a good moment for both of them? good call for bernie sanders? should he have gone for her weak points? >> it was one of my two favorite

moments of the whole night. a rare moment of civility. everyone is hungry for civility in politics. they both benefited from this. what was true about what bernie said is that his supporters that go to see him are totally down with democracy socialism. i'm not sure i totally understand it. and they really don't ask about the email servers. anderson cooper brought the facts back into the situation, which is that the fbi is looking into the server. >> on the democratic side, so much talk about guns and gun legislation in the country. how did bernie sanders do on that front? >> in the room he was like a stinky sock. in the room -- >> explain that one for you. >> it was all they could do not to boo his answer in the room. should he stay in the race and continue to pick up space. i don't think he did anything to broaden his base. i think his supporters remain passionate for him, but i think

his message is more of a center-right message on guns. i think the liberal base of the democratic party, which is who hillary and the rest were talking to last night, for prefer hillary clinton's answer. >> we have to talk about joe biden. he was watching the debate. many people think this was one of the decision points for him, seeing how she does, how she held up. what do you do if you are him this morning? >> i think it gets a little more difficult. i accept his explanation that he is going through a personal process. is his grief at a place where he could channel it productively or does he need to be there for his kids and grandkids. i think the political opening is less but the opportunity for joe biden step in and serve the country is there. hillary clinton did mention performer boss, president obama, a lot more than i think she would have if she weren't worried about a biden run. >> do you think joe biden missed his moment? he could have possibly gotten in when hillary clinton appeared weaker and she seems to now have

regained her footing? >> we talk about that a lot. we talk about elizabeth warren is another one who may have missed their moment. at the moment when everyone is screaming at the top of their lungs for you to get in, that's when you should get in. after that it gets harder. the moment it's the easiest and when it most resembles pushing everyone downhill is when everyone is screaming at the top of their lungs. i don't think anyone will be screaming this morning. we move to florida. a small plane crash that shocked the community there. live scene over a mobile home park in suburban lake worth. the investigation is under way this morning. authorities trying to figure out how many people were on board that aircraft. nbc's kerry sanderd is there this morning. >> reporter: the authorities are trying to determine how many people were on board the plane and also how many people on the ground in the mobile home park who may have also died. at least one father here says he

has not seen his 21-year-old daughter since the crash. she lived inside one of the mobile homes that was struck. this morning investigators are trying to figure out how a small plane veered off course, crashing into a mobile home park in lake worth, florida, on tuesday. this surveillance video captured the moments just as the plane crashed around 6:00 p.m. the aircraft hitting one home before bursting into flames. the fire quickly spreading to a second home. >> there were two trailers that were on fire when we arrived. the faa is en route to the location as we speak. >> reporter: police say it's unclear how many people were inside the trailers or in the plane when it went down. >> i heard a big boom noise. >> saw fire coming out of the house, out of the windows. >> reporter: witnesses say they ran to the scene, some frantically calling 911. >> i was scared. i had chills. i told my boss, there was gray smoke coming out. >> reporter: others describing in heart-breaking detail how

bystanders tried to rescue those trapped. >> a witness said he tried to break windows to get a lady out and couldn't do it on time because the flames was busting out. he was crying. >> reporter: the fires were extinguished but plumes of smoke still rising from the wreckage. firefighters preserved the scene for investigators expected to arrive later this morning. as we look at a picture of the scene from above, you can see the size of the area that was hit. the national transportation safety board will be here with investigators and will also be three miles away at the lantana airport this morning where it's believed that the plane was headed. savannah. >> thank you very much, kerry. natalie is on assignment. tamron is here with a look at an escalating violence situation in the middle east. israel on high alert taking action against an escalating wave of deadly violence by palestinians. nbc chief global correspondent

bill neely is in jerusalem. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. from the spot at jerusalem's old city where two of the attacks took place this is now a city gripped by fear and suspicion. israel has hit back not just with more police and checkpoints but with threats of collective punishment for palestinians. and a warning, some may find the pictures in this report disturbing. israeli police got the go-ahead to close off arab areas. they are struggling to contain this violence. the police say they can't stop these attacks through intelligence because most of them are carried out by people they don't know. often teenagers with no links to terrorist groups acting spontaneously and often at random. israelis are scared. so scared gun sales are up and shooting ranges are booming. in the worst attack, two men

targeted a bus with a knife and gun. today's commuters don't feel reassured by the one extra policeman on board. a decade ago suicide bombers regularly targeted these buses anyone with a backpack or a thick coat was eyed suspiciously. today a knife is harder to spot. the images caught on security cameras have terrified and horrified, condemned by the u.s. >> the situation is too volatile and dangerous. >> reporter: israel desperate to end the attacks that seems to have no leaders. one new israeli measure is controversial. it says it will not return the body of any attacker it kills to their families. instead, it's considering burying them secretly at a cemetery for terrorists. and that, tamron, is likely to anger many palestinians. back to you. >> bill, thank you.

jury ordered a wisconsin gun shop to pay nearly $6 million to a pair of milwaukee police officers who were seriously wounded with a weapon bought at the store. officers brian norberg and retired officer graham coonish were both shot in the face. according to the lawsuit the store ignored warning signs that the gun was being sold to a so-called straw buyer. a buyer who buys the gun for someone else who cannot legally purchase it. the hunt for one of the world's most wanted men has intensified this morning. el chapo escaped from a mexican prison in july. now u.s. and mexican officials believe they have new clues that could lead to his capture. nbc's mark potter reports. >> reporter: this morning u.s. drug agents and mexican marines are in hot pursuit of fugitive drug lord of el chapo.

three sources tell nbc news that u.s. agents intercepted phone conversations indicating he was hiding on a ranch in the rugged sierra madre mountains. marines raided the ranch and sources say they found cell phones and clothing they think might have been his. for a time they thought they had him surrounded but the drug king pin wasn't there. authorities told residents they were on the lookout for a man who was usually surrounded by body guards without mentioning chau chapo by name. this woman says the environment is very tense and they're scared. authorities say chapo's cartel is the biggest supplier of illicit drugs to the united states. the u.s. says it's doing all it can to help mexico recapture the elusive chapo who always seems to be a step ahead of them. on to the national league championship series for the cubs.

they beat the cardinals, winning a post-season series at home for the first time in team history. as you imagine, setting off the joyous celebration inside and outside wrigley field. chicago will play either the dodgers or the mets. that series is tied up after l.a. beat the mets 3-1 last night. they play the fifth and deciding game tomorrow night. a baby born -- speaking of exciting -- at cruising altitude is the talk of youtube this morning. a woman went into labor during a flight from bali to l.a. fortunately a california doctor was on board and delivered the baby girl with help from flight attendants. passengers applauded. the baby's first cry, no normally doesn't happen on a plane. the plane was diverted to alaska. mother and child are said to be doing fine. first flight ever where passengers applauded a crying baby. >> good point. >> special. congratulations to them.

it interferes with the mother's ability to care for herself is when she should probably seek help. >> panettiere is not the first celebrity to shed light on postpartum depression. >> i was part of an entire percentage of women that experienced frightful thoughts and fearful images and have no connections with their children. >> estimated one in seven new mothers experiences some sort of postpartum, mood or anxiety disorder. >> you don't realize what broad a spectrum you can experience that on. and it's something i think that needs to be talked about and women need to know they are not alone. >> let's turn to our nbc medical contributor. doctor, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> one thing i learned, it can strike any time in the first year. >> it can. intuitively we would think it happens first few months after childbirth. >> hormones are raging. >> the time of the most stress, your life is literally turned

upside down. it can happen any time in the first year of postpartum. two of my friends had it happen nine or ten months they hit the skids. interesting. >> you're already sleepless, might have the blues. how do you know if it's something you need to worry about. >> the biggest distinction between baby blues and what's called postpartum depression is duration and severity of symptoms. it's normal two days postpartum to have the crash of hormones. we think that's the cause. you're feeling irritable, anxious or sad. you have a new baby, you're not quite sure what to do. that should happen two weeks. if it lasts for longer than two weeks and the symptoms are more severe, difficulty sleeping, feeling helpless, hopeless, guilt. i think one of the main reasons is this disconnect between the expectations of motherhood and the reality of motherhood. >> that's why it makes such a difference to have hayden talking about it.

there's this feeling in the media it's so wonderful. of course you love your baby. this is real. >> most of us when we experience this, i had it with both my kids, you feel this sense of guilt. you have this wonderful new baby in your life you should feel happy. on the other hand you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed. you're mourning your relationship with your husband. by the way, i should give a little acknowledgement to fathers out there. they can experience postpartum depression as well independent of whether their wives do. you can get help. one thing to point out to people, if you do have risk factors for postpartum, a prior history of depression or family history of depression, be in contact with your ob-gyn or primary care physician so they can identify symptoms early and you can get help if you need it. >> don't be afraid to talk about it. doctor, thank you. send it to matt. >> thank you very much. coming up on trending, what men say they wish women would do on dates. i'll leave it at that. in pop start, it's one of the most famous movie scenes of all time.

as anchor of the "cbs evening news" dan rather spent decades bringing the day's important events to millions of viewers, but his career there was cut short when one story he reported for "60 minutes" came under failures in reporting protocol. that report about then president george w. bush's national guard service is the subject of a new film. it's called "truth." robert redford stars as dan rather. dan, good morning. always nice to see you. i want to get to the serious nature of this in a second but i have to start by asking you, did you ever dream someone would make a movie of your life or an aspect of it and robert redford would play you? >> no, matt. i think i thought more likely i would become the pope of rome or the dalai lama rather than have robert redford one of the great actors in this generation play you on the big screen. still trying to get my head

around it. >> in the introduction, i gave the back story, this report on george w. bush's national guard service, documents that it was based on called into question. it was a very troubling time in your career and in the history of cbs news. reputations were shattered. people lost their job. why did you want it to come to the big screen? >> well, first of all, i had very little to do with it coming to the big screen and i was surprised when someone option it had for the big screen. and i didn't believe a movie would ever get made, but i do think the movie is less about me and marry mapes and even george w. bush. what it's about is what's happened to the news. why it's happened and how it's happened and why people should care. >> and that's a really good point, so if you were to look back, it's been about a decade now. >> right. >> if you were to look back, what would you do differently in that same circumstance? >> well, i would do a lot of things differently. what i wouldn't do differently is back off the story. the story was true.

because it was true undeniable facts about how president bush got into the air national guard to avoid service in vietnam and the fact that after getting in he disappeared, those were facts and that was true. because it was true those who wanted to discredit the story had to attack the process by which we got to the truth and they have successfully attacked us on that so among things i would do is, number one, i would realize that we had to have a much better defense in the blogosphere and number two, cbs news, in a break from tradition did not back its reporting and that was a surprise to me. i have a lot of the responsibilities in this myself. >> someone with such a storied career up to that moment. what was it like to live in the eye that have storm where you were being so severely questioned? >> well, it wasn't pleasant. this is was the darkest period of my professional career.

i would much rather a movie be made about my coverage of civil rights or watergate or the vietnam war and it was a dark period and one was in the vortex of this. you have a sense that the world is spinning and spinning out of control and nothing you can do can put you out of that so what i tried to do is recognize that, yes, we had made the mistakes in the process of developing the story and as a consequence had left herself vulnerable and the story became the mistakes we made in getting to the truth, not the truth. >> you mentioned changes in the news business. you've been out of that anchor chair for ten years. do you miss it? >> of course i miss it. i've moved on. i long ago made my peace with my time at cbs and now tried to be in gratitude, modesty and humility and i have moved on. do investigative reporting for axis tv and do a program called

"the big interview." i'm into the new world of -- the digital world and still doing the kind of stories that i like to do, and i'll really excited about moving forward. this is well in the past, as i say. i think the story resonates today, but i'm constantly moving forward and trying, to you know, keep up with buzzfeed. >> then help me. i'm having trouble. >> snapchat and i think it's an exciting time in journalism. i'm an optimist by experience and my nature. yes, i've had my difficulties and made my mistakes but i'm excited every morning when my feet hit the floor i want to look for a story. >> always good to see you, dan. >> thank you, matt. >> a pleasure. >> thank you, my friend. >> and the movie "truth" opens friday. up next, our favorite fashions and sport some of the trends of the past and to do it today. first on a wednesday morning and this is "today" on nbc.

this movie is really inspirational. playing hank irwin, a real person. certain amount of pressure. here's a guy on the set and can you see him and talk with him. >> because he was the father of the film-makers. the directors wanted to tell their dad's story, and the stories that he told to them when they were kids. this is the civil rights era of birmingham after what everybody knows about, desegregation, getting kids to school. black kids and white kids did not want to do that and so this movie depicts a move we evangelism kind of swept the country for a little bit, the jesus freak movement, tied dye jesus on the cover of "life" magazine and billy graham was filling up the cotton bowl with 50,000 people and this one particular chaplain hank was part of that movement and felt inspired and called for that moment and went to that school and even though it's a public

school he called the football players to have a call of faith and undeniable listening to the people that were there that for them in that moment it was incredibly helpful and powerful of bringing their team and community together and i deed bringing, you know, the statement it was biggest football game. the big football game that's being depicted right there. that's a practice game. one of the big football games was the most heavily attended football game in alabama state history and that stands to this day. >> what was it about hank that's so special because he did what a lot of people couldn't do which was to bridge the gap, busing coming in, acrimony and hatred. what was it about this message that hit these guys? >> first, i would say that the moment was ready. people were ready. they were open for it. they needed something. it's not unlike in ferguson or baltimore or something like that where these problems, i mean, it's out of the news this week but it won't be out of the news for long because those issues are not settled yet and when it

happens everybody starts looking around like what can we do? you know, i don't personally need to push a christian faith message on the country, but for these people it worked, and so for hank he was just guileless and went in and spoke from his heart and he said, hey, it doesn't have to be like this. you don't have to keep fighting or keep i was yourself based on your thinking. can you use christ and your faith in christ to do that. a very powerful message and the film-makers believe in that message today and as an actor i'm happy to tell that story. >> and a lot of people are going to the faith-based movies. >> yes or no, "goonies" sequel. >> some day, i hope. >> are you in? >> if they want me. >> the time has come. >> you heard that from al roker. >> steven spielberg, do it! get on it! make "goonies 2." >> thanks very much.
