into early afternoon. the rest of the activity winding down and still some light showers in san jose and some more rain is approaching parts of the south bay. so, you'll be seeing that in gilroy here in the next few minutes. as we go into the rest of the morn oing, some off and on shower os and some cloudy skies. mild temperatures and it will be cooler today with highs mostly in the 70s and 80s all across the bay. i'll detail that and a look at the closer at the rain coming up in a few minutes. let's check in now with mike with a view of what's happening in the south bay. >> yeah, kari live look here at san jose. the first burst of traffic calmed down and the second one start up in 20 minutes. we'll show you the map that we earlier had wet roadways registered but things look like they dry out as far as the freeways and watch the surface streets sprinkle throughout san jose. 87 and 101 for the build we show you. watch 880 just north of 280. a crash there and it sounds like that car was in lanes had been

cleared butt track that and slowing from an earlier crash in hayward. behind me, your typical build for the tri-valley and an incident reported right at the dublin interchange. i'll be tracking that, as well. more happening as folks get on to the roadway. earlier crash from antioch and, of course, the toll plaza is full. back to you. >> mike, thank you. a developing story. a growing sinkhole near a middle school is going to force some parents to reroute the drop off their kids. it's now more than double the size of a few hours ago. right now alvarado is shut down not far from the middle school in union city because the road is unstable. >> pete is live in union city and parents are going to have to rethink how to get the kids to school this morning. we don't have a lot of free time in the morning, pete. >> yes, kris and sam, you better get your kids here early if you're going to alvarado middle school. drop them off at fredi street.

you see the huge massive sinkhole and official os have told me it have grown by 20 to 40 feet. want to show you guys more images closer to that sinkhole. the good news is no one was hurt, thankfully. but crews are right yesterday around 2:00 p.m. and still no word on exactly what caused it. use a roobought to go bot to go has grown in size tremendously. now, water in this area has been shut down. there was no water line breaks or anyone was worried about roads splitting in the area. official os say you should be okay. expect to be here through the morning and here's an official with alameda county water district. giving us an update on today's challenges. >> we do know at some point later in the day yesterday that the actual asphalt did collapse on to our main and then it broke the joints and that's when water appeared in the main. >> so, remember, parent, if

you're dropping off your kids at alvarado drop them off at fredi street because crews expect to be here throughout this morning and possibly this evening. >> thank you, pete. new this morning, president obama is pushing back the timetable for most u.s. troops to leave afghanistan. the president now expects 5,500 troops to remain in afghanistan after he leaves office at the end of the year. originally, you might remember the plan was to have just 1,000 troops left by 2017 and only in the capital city of kabul. right now close to 10,000 troops in afghanistan. grieving friends and family members looking for answers after a deadly street racing crash in the south bay. mourners gathering in san jose last night for a candlelight vigil at the scene of the crash. the night before, three teenagers died after what police say was a crash during a street race. the victim, 15-year-old jaylen and 15-year-old anthony ramos. loved ones at a complete loss.

hurt. security guards did hold johnson until police got there to arrest him. >> that video does not get any less crazy each time you see it. putting out a different kind of fire now. a new emission allowing inmates to help fight wildfires. california leaders now say nearly 40% of the state's inmate firefighting crew have previous convictions for violent offense os. for years, the state claimed only violent inmates were admitted to this program. a corrections department spokesperson says that inmates with a violent history have been serving since at least the 1990s. nearly 3,800 inmates helped professional firefighters across the state of california. themakers are now calling for the lawmakers are calling for a hearing to reevaluate that program. preparing for the next quake and students across california, mine included, will get a lesson on what to do if a quake hits. >> bob redell live in san jose

with the words of wisdom and advice, bob, that everyone should hear. >> sam and kris. the great shake out of 2015ing place at 10:15 this morning. this is an annual event. many events throughout the bay area here including here at the tech museum here in san jose where many elementary students will come here to practice in an earthquake simulator and to practice the three phrases. drop, cover and hold on. that's what the experts are telling you to do. drop down, find some cover under a sturdy table or desk and hang on until that quake is done. what you do not want to do is get in a doorway, do not stand in the doorway and do not run outside, even though maybe that is your instinct because you're afraid the building is going to collapse. the experts say a greater chance of getting hit and hurt by falling objects like glass or objects on a shelf than there is getting hurt in a building collapse. also at 10:15 this morning, i bring this up in case you are trying to get to work by

b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. will be running their own drill and trigger an earthquake alarm and make an announcement this is a drill and slow trains down to 27 miles an hour. this will give the transit agency to practice its own response for the next time a big earthquake happens. seismologists have been telling us that there is a high probability of a magnitude 6.7 or greater quake in the state within the next 30 years. you might recall 26 years ago this saturday, you're looking at the video right there and the damage it caused. that was a magnitude 6.9. killed 63 people in the bay area and injured thousands more and caused billions of dollars worth of damage and who could forget just over a year ago that magnitude 6.0 hit napa causing one death and creating hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage in that area. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> try to learnila a little bit

from history there. we have beautiful green on the radar. >> yes, so great to see rain moving into parts of the bay area and great that we're getting this before the weekend, but we may have another chance heading into saturday. i'll talk more about that coming up, but let's get a look at what's happening now before you head out the door. a lot of the rain is taking a break and just seeing the cloudy skies and some more waves of rain. we're seeing the next wave approaching the south bay as it continues to move through this morning. we will also have some breaks. and a warm day also more humidity. expect it to be up to 85 degrees in los gatos and redwood city 73 and in the north bay a little bit more sunshine. 79 degrees in napa. and 86 degrees today in livermore. with these temperatures that are about average for this time of year coming down from the heat we had to start out the week, i'll show you the weekend and what to expect coming up in less than ten minutes. let's check in now with mike to see what's happening as you head

out for the commute. any slow downs? >> the bay bridge toll plaza and the approach is looking good off the maze and upper east shore. a typical pattern there and also antioch into concord for westbound highway 4. we're showing a crash at the dublin interchange at the bottom of your screen and no lane in. ation. i'll watch that. but i don't see any slowing and the earlier crash south 880 has cleared to the shoulder, not so bad from san leandro heading down towards the san mateo bridge. we have that 92 camera and see a good volume of traffic heading over to the peninsula. expect some slowing, some congestion on 101 and near 84. that's over towards east palo alto. a smoother flow of traffic, northbound 680 does show a lot of slowing. stall around jacqueline and getting cleared to the shoulder. i'm waiting for an update on the chp and, of course, tracking it. the rest of your south bay for san jose shows a typical build there. back to you. >> thank you very much. tragedy on local trains and

hey, guys,ets let's do this. we can put together a campaign that could win. >> critical filing deadlines looming over the next few weeks the issue is becoming now or never if it becomes now biden's team will have a lot of ground to make up, in particular in the fund-raising area. a computer glitch in the terror watch list data bank is responsible for delays at several major airports last night. this one from the backup at jfk, just one of the airports affected. the computer system that checks airline passenger lists against terror watches wasn't working properly. we're told that problem is now fixed. and there's no evidence the glitch was due to sabotage or any kind of cyberattack. if someone steals your personal information, it could cost you everything. but it turns out, it doesn't cost the thieves more than a soda to buy that information. researchers say stolen data like credit card and debit card numbers sell for as little as 55 cents online. in the u.s., stolen debit and

company is taking in blood samples from doctors, in many cases it's not using its super advanced machine to test that blood. in many cases, "the journal" says, it is using standard industry machines you might find in any testing lab. remember, soranos is worth an estimated $9 billion because it has the super advanced testing machine. san francisco-based square has updated its ipo plan saying it will offer stock under the symbol sq. no word on an oeppening price o when or how much stock. but another step towards a much anticipated ipo. we'll drag this graphic out, again. jack dorsy is the head of this graphic. he just took a job as the ceo of twitter. this seems that square is going to have a part-time ceo. for that matter, so, too, will twitter. part-time ceo. that sounds harsh, right?

was going to let him go on the street. he was not hurt. >> took louis out of a shelter to put him on the street. >> dumping the evidence, i would assume. >> that's heartbreaking to hear. >> a lot of people want him. we have mike in the house to talk about your morning commute. first, kari is talking about a little bit of rain. >> things may get slick out there because we have wet roads in spots. a live look now at the bay bridge. things look like it's flowing smoothly the bridge and we just had some clouds in areas of mist of san francisco and the rest of us are seeing mostly cloudy skies. it is mild as you step out the door feeling humid. it is 70 degrees right now in livermore. really didn't cool off that much overnight and we're also tracking some rain, some spotty showers. you also can tell here in the central valley that we did have some lightning strikes, too. a lot of that lightning fizzled out before it moved into the bay

area. we can see plenty of energy coming from the south and we can also see some of that moving into the bay area. although a lot of the showers are fizzling as now one approaches the south bay. we'll be watching out for more rain as we go through the morning and earl afternoon. so, let me take you hour by hour in san jose, it will be 65 degrees at 8:00. we're warming up into the 76 degrees by lunchtime. it will be a cooler day. eventually hitting about the 80 degree mark in some some spots and palo alto 78 degrees and embarcadero up to 78 degrees and a mix of sun and clouds. highs reaching 83 degrees in santa rosa, pittsburg and a high of 85 degrees. still warm and here's something that will cool us off as we go am to the weekend. a cold front moving in and, unfortunately, a lot of the rain out ahead of that front wants to sizzle out, but still bring a chance of showers to the north bay. the rest of us feeling some breezy winds. some of the models showing the

possibility of tenth of an inch in santa rosa on saturday while the rest of bay area, especially the farther south you go. this will get trace amounts of rain. this weekend, we're bringing it back down to the upper 70s to low 80s and chance of rain in san francisco in the north bay. on sunday, it is looking nice. you can make plans to get outside and it will be comfortable and little bit breezy, though, with highs in the 70s and 80s. let's check in now with mike to see where you may be slowing down. >> probably going to be slowing down here north 101 right at 680 and a little farth north towards 80. that is your typical pattern and i want to show you something unexpected on our maps. the slowing we talked about. 101 and 87 and it is northbound 680 heading up towards jacqueline and somewhere between the two exits we had a stalled vehicle and been there for half an hour as far as the report goes and see the slowing continuing around the area. try to get an update from chp. sounds like they have somebody there, but we don't have any

that vehicle over towards foster city. hayward side where you are jammed up coming up across the flat section and 92 on your map is the slow drive. 84 on the map just further south a lot better as far as the traffic flow and you see folks getting there on 880 and typical pattern and made worse because of that stall reported in the last few minutes on the san mateo bridge. the peninsula move very fine and south bay nothing expected for the pattern change there. 680 the issue disabled vehicle near jackson and cleared from the roadway and bay bridge toll plaza top of your screen as you expect the metering lights are on. back to you. >> thank you very much. kari just mentioned a second ago more detail just into our newsroom. a small quake in san ramon. a magnitude 3.2 that struck around 6:10 this morning. no reports of injuries or damage and this one comes on the heels of yesterday's quake swarm. more than 20 quakes struck in the san ramon area all within a 24-hour period.

on wednesday three men started fighting near the rosenberg library and one of othem was armed, causing the campus to go into near lock down. no one was hurt and there was no evidence of shots fired, but police are stilling for the two other suspects who ran away. there is still no plea from a trio of drifters accused in two separate bay area quillings. charged in the murder of steve carter and audrey carey. the three appeared in front of oa packed courtroom yesterday and didn't even look at each other. they also had their heads shaved for undisclosed medical reasons. the judge is giving them more time to get separate defense attorneys. some of the things a popular uc berkeley professor is accused of doing to some of his students. stepping down amidst angry pressure from former students. those complaints date back to 2001. the world renowned astronomer apologized on his personal

website last week saying he disagrees with some of the accusations, but is taking full responsibility. a local professional photographer is now accused of child pornography. san francisco police say duane ackerman had thousands of videos and images stored at his home. investigators say ackerman was also using hidden cameras to film up women's skirts. it appears many of those videos were secretly recorded near pier 49 and japan town. happening today, the fate of two financially troubled hospitals taking center stage in the south bay. state attorney general car mela harris wants to gauge reaction to the proposed sales of o'connor hospital in san jose and st. louis hospital in gilroy. each is part of the daughters of charity network. last year the group tried to sell facilities to the prime health network, but that deal fell through. this time the potential buyer, a hedge fund. one of today's hearings takes place in san hooza and tjose an

caused hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage and injured a couple hundred people and caused one death. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." the follow up now. last month's valley wildfire that burned through parts of three different counties is now being called the costliest wildfire in eight years. the press democrat reporting the valley fire caused in total more than $1.5 billion of damage. in terms of economic losses, not only is that california's worst wildfire since '07 but also believed to be the fifth worst in u.s. history. the valley fire killed four people and destroyed close to 2,000 structures. about 1,300 of which were homes. now, let's begin with meteorologist kari hall. we saw some lightning strikes and hopefully that won't cause any wildfires. >> we'll watch out for that as we go through the day. also some rain moving into the bay area, too. that would be a positive as we look now at some of the rain that continues to move into the

new this morning a change in strategy from president obama just hours ago. he announced the plan to keep nearly 6,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan into 2017. "today in the bay" tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. this morning. tracie, the president set to talk about that plan. >> exactly. in just koppel hours we'll hear him in detail on why he wants to keep more of our service men and women there than originally planned. it is supposed to be only about 1,000 to cover the embassy after 2016. but as of today, the president is set to announce that 5,500 troops will end up staying in afghanistan after next year. why? because of the violence and vulnerability in that area, instability still in that region. and in addition to the embassy, there will be three different

release what they call diversity report. showing how many women or minorities they employ. go daddy which recently opened an office in sunnyvale took it a step further and showed how much it pays its employees. the company best known for its risque super bowl ads says much to its own surprise pays employ on average more than it does its male employees. just one penny more. women make 1 the number is slightly lower in the engineering department and 6 cents lower in management. now, square has updated its plans for its ipo saying it will trade under the symbol sq and updating some of its financials. also warning its ceo jack dorsy may be distracted from business by his job as ceo of twitter.

he may be distracted at his job at twitter by his job at square. twitter went down for a short time this morning. other news, how do passengers on a flight from phoenix to portland feel about american airlines? >> we are seeing the first video of an incident of a woman kicked off the flight by one of the flight attendants who is trying. she didn't hear the flight attendant talking to her asking her to sit down. apparently quite rude so she complained to another flight attendant and they kicked her off the flight. as you can hear, the passengers are quite sure the passengers on the right and the flight attendant is in the wrong. the passengers then approached the pilot as a group and said they witnessed the whole thing and it is the flight attendant who should be kicked off that flight. >> sticking with your fellow passenger. >> passenger protesting there. all right. well, from boo to raindrops. we're not booing, we're cheering.

>> yeah, we're so glad to see at least a little bit of rain. not a drought busting rain, not a lot, but spotty here and there and may walk out the door and say, hey, the ground is wet. we've seen that this morning, even though the rain is taking a break and as we get a look now at the bay bridge from san francisco, things are getting started on this thursday morning with cloudy skies and it feels really muggy outside. take a look at these temperatures, too. it's 70 degrees in livermore and, yes, this is starting out the day. it is 60 in napa and san francisco is now at 62 degrees and 58 degrees. and we've seen the rain off and on and right now it's more off, but there may be another round of rain moving in as we go through the rest of the morning. we've seen the showers spinning with an upper level low that continues to bring some rain. mainly across southern california, but streaming some of that into the bay area, too. our models show that there could be some more rounds of it and the possibility of some additional accumulation. once again, it won't be enough

to really bust the drought, but this is better than nothing. 0.02 in san jose. maybe some higher amounts on the peninsula. going hoir-by-hour in san francisco. a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the mid-60s and rising about 70 degrees by 3:00. this evening, we'll have more clouds moving in and the mild night dropping to 63 degrees later on. the future cast shows another chance of rain out ahead of a cold front moving through on saturday and now it looks like a lot of that rain does fizzle out, but it at least brings measurable amount of rain for the north bay. the rest of us feeling some breezy winds and the model forecasting an additional 0.01 for santa rosa and napa may not be exact, but we're looking at the heaviest amounts of rain for the north and then sizzling out as it approaches the south. now, that happens on saturday and our temperatures will be in the 70s. some upper 60s for san francisco and by sunday we've got a lot of osunshi osunshine going on and comfortable temperatures.

whether that is average for middle of october and many events going on, you will be able to enjoy comfortable weather looking very nice as we head into the weekend. let's check in now with mike checking a problem on the san a mateo bridge. that's one issue. let's take our other camera from the foster city side and see a slower drive and smooth drive coming off that flat section and by the time we see that, very slow up to that high rise, as well. the map will show you how tough it is across 92. it will build up off of southbound 880 and more folks will head over towards the dumbarton bridge that it looks like they are already doing and a problem for the east bay commute over to the peninsula which is seeing slowing from 101 and coming off the palo alto. pretty typical pattern for your thursday. no big drama. 87 shows that slowing and a trouble spot this morning and looking at the rest of your approach it for the bay bridge, pretty standard here.
