reclining seat. tom, what can you tell us? >> reporter: this is like 2010. 137 passengers on board. one of them tried to put her seat back and the passenger sitting behind her didn't like that at all. a southwest airlines 737 heading from los angeles to san francisco forced to make an emergency landing sunday evening after an altercation between two passengers. one passenger tells nbc news minutes after take off a man began choking a woman sitting in front of him after he tilted her seat back. she screamed for help and the crew came to her aid. shortly after they returned safely. >> evidencely we have two passengers in a physical altercation. we need to get turned around back to lax. >> another witness posting this photo showing police arriving.

cameron matthews, the question being asked why is this happening so often? the community is taking it hard. the 6-foot junior collapsed on the sidelines after telling teammates he felt dizzy. he was taken to the hospital where he died the next day. officials say he suffered an aneurysm although the exact death has not been determined. family and friends are heart broken but don't feel football is to blame. >> they feel if cameron wasn't on the football field he could have been in the car and this could have happened. >> he's the sixth player to die after a game since the school year started. six players were close to the beginning of the school year is unusual. last year fooi had football related injuries all season. three deaths a year is on average. in an effort to reduce deaths and injuries, every state can prevent concussions.

7:30 now on this monday morning, october 19th, 2015. chilly start to the day here in the northeast and a look at the headlines on this monday morning. get this. a southwest airlines flight from los angeles to san francisco had to turn back and make an emergency landing overnight because a passenger allegedly choked the woman in front of him for reclining her seat. he was removed from the flight and then questioned by police. federal officials are announcing new rules for drones today. among them a requirement that anyone who buys them, even for recreational use, has to register those devices with the department of transportation. >> and vice president biden could announce his decision about a possible presidential

run any day now. he did not tip his cards to reporters and on a weekend phone call with the international association of firefighters biden says he has to make that final gut decision. >> how many days have we been saying he could announce his decision any day now. a never-ending question. let's begin this hour with the pending release of former olympic star oscar pistorius. tomorrow he's expected to walk out of a south african prison where he served a year for the killing of his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. nbc's kelly cobiella has the story on this. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. you'll recall pistorius was just days away from being released in august when the justice minister in south africa put a stop to it, but that's not likely to happen this time around. tomorrow pistorius will start a new phase of his five-year sentence under house arrest. after 364 days in this maximum security prison oscar pistorius will soon be out. no longer an inmate but not a

free man. across south africa opinions are divideded. >> it's good news. i'm happy for him. >> it's too early. >> reporter: he'll serve the last four years of a five-year sentence at his uncle's house under what's called correctional supervision. >> he will go to work and come home. he won't have access to guns. he'll go to therapy. >> reporter: it was south africa's trial of the century. a superstar athlete and national hero oscar pistorius accused of killing his model and law graduate girlfriend reeva steenkamp on valentine's day. an emotional pistorius told the court that it was an accident, that he shot his girlfriend through a bathroom door thinking she was an intruder. >> before i knew it i fired four shots through the door. >> reporter: the judge handed down a five-year sentence for culpable homicide. reeva steenkamp's family said all too long the sentence is not enough for taking a life.

her mother june steenkamp spoke to nbc news this summer on what would have been her daughter's 32nd birthday. >> we have to learn to live without her and it's very difficult. i don't think it's ever going to be possible. >> reporter: it's not over. in just two weeks time prosecutors take the case back to court, arguing pufrtus should have been convict the of murder. unlike in the u.s., the prosecution can appeal the verdict that. appeal will be heard november 3rd, and if the prosecution is successful, pistorius will have to go back to prison. guys, the mandatory minimum for murder is 15 years behind bars. savannah, matt? >> all right. kelly coble yeah, thanks very much. an awful lot of media attention paid to that tomorrow. >> and the appeal as well. police in sacramento, meanwhile, are hoping new sketches of two suspects will lead to arrests in the stabbing of the french train attack hero spencer stone. here's nbc's jacob rascon. >> reporter: smiling ear to ear, spencer stone is seen standing

a trough will develop along this. it's going to be a slow mover so it len happens the showers and thunderstorms that will continue right through into the middle of the week and so we are expecting anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain, locally higher amounts possible, and then that system moves to the west, to the east, i should say. 40% of texas is at least in a mod rattled drought. three months ago nothing. look at what happened. that system starts to move to the east. heavy tropical moisture coming up out of the south and heavy rain and coastal flooding and beach erosion. rainfall amounts 3 to 5 inches and some areas may pick up seven inch etz of rain so by mid to late week we expect major flooding in texas, and we'll ke nice to get some rain over the weekend. we've had a little bit this morning. it's still misting in the south bay. after that the skies are clearing. we're seeing clear skies in fran at 60 degrees.

reclining seat a very good morning to you. it is 8:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. a reclining seat leads to a nightmare flight. it happened after southwest flight left l.a.x. last night for sfo but quickly turned around. a passenger shared this photo of the scene after the plane landed back at l.a.x. other passengers say it started when a woman reclined her seat and the man behind her allegedly started choking her. that's when the captain radioed in an emergency landing. fbi agents detained the man involved, but so far there have been no arrests. the flight finally arrived at sfo about 2:00 a.m. with all 136 passengers on board except that man removed by agents. all right. let's check the roadways right now. hopefully smooth sailing out there, mike. >> it's a tougher drive.

it just seemed like a fun project. >> it's funny though because you are, i don't know if everyone knows this, you're quite musician yourself. >> i am. >> but we don't hear you play any music in this. >> if it does well, then maybe aunt bailey will sing in a second or third one, i hope -- they didn't know i was a singer when i signed on but it's really fun. every single song gets stuck in your head. >> another thing to watch out for in this movie is a little cameo of your daughter. she's in. it is she interested in acting in. >> she loves acting. we don't want her to do it professionally and we really love general and john -- they get along really well. i know you don't want to the do it. would it be okay and i did it, i actually directed her in it. very daunting to direct your almost teenage daughter. >> the only time for the next few years that she actually listens to your direction. >> i think it's the only time

she's ever listened to me. you were back in march talking about one of my what was that like? what are people asking? was there anything surprising about the experience? >> it's interesting because you know, obviously i've seen the movie a lot, i talked about it a lot. i think the last time i was here i was talking about it for the anniversary. actually doing an extended q and a is interesting because it forces me to remember it like i'm remembering all of the stuff which is really good for when i decide to finally write my memoirs which won't be a while. these memories are coming back to me that i forgot. what's amazing is how many generations of people loved this movie. i have 12-year-olds and 10-year-olds in the audience their mothers or grandmothers showed them the movie. it's really amazing that it's sort of relevant. >> it's awesome, i imagine as an
