flashing disco lights as well. a flash at the bay bridge toll plaza. just past the toll plaza on the shoulder. that's one distraction. these flashing lights look like an oversized load. we're looking at the maps and we don't see any unusual slowing. we have slowing off of 880. heavier through fremont, probably because so incidents in the tri-valley. a new crash south of 680, looks like it's out of the roadway. the south bay itself moves very smoothly. we had earlier first burst of traffic. 101 sorts itself out at 680. that will kick in again in about 20 minutes. speed sensors slower than you'll actually find right now. we are following breaking news this morning. crews working on putting out a fire at a strip mall in sunnyvale. this is happening near the intersection of evelyn and fair

observation avenues. firefighters have already called for backup once. they tell us the flames are not under control. we're sending our crew right now to the scene. we're going to bring you updates as soon as they come into our newsroom. more breaking news this morning, one person is dead in a fighter jet crash in england. the fsh-18 crashed shortly after takeoff from a u.s. air force base about 70 miles northeast of london. the air pours is investigating the cause of the crash. happening right now, a search for a young boy last seen walking his dog on the north coast. members of the marin county search and rescue team are joining the search for a 5-year-old boy last seen yesterday around 5:00 at night. he's missing in the town of brook trails northwest of will let's. so far authorities are only identifying the boy as brett. at least 75 people right now actively searching for him and his dog who was with the boy. new this morning, drug concerns at a bay area high school after three students were

hospitalized this past week. the principal is taking action. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live at the high school this morning. this is all linked to common cold medicines you can buy over-the-counter, some might have in their medicine cabinets right now. >> reporter: that's right. that's why the principal here at tam high reached out and e-mailed parents yesterday wanted to alert them about this so they can take a look, is this in your medicine cabinet. the two most common forms robitussin and in the case of the school, core seed din. dxm, the active ingredient found in more than 120 over-the-counter cold medications. taking too much can lead to hallucinations and even extremes like seizures, coma and in rare cases even death. marin county public health officer is contacting every doctor in the county urging them to cut down on prescribing pain killers calling drug overdoses in the county an epidemic.

we have one accidental death from an overdose every two weeks. the majority of those are due to prescription drugs. >> reporter: there are multiple factors in the rise of drug abuse here. the dea says dxm is on the rise in particular because newer products are out, easier to carry and hide, places like school and work. we're talking mostly tablets and gel capsules instead of the additional syrup. street names known as triple c, poor man's pcp, velvet and skittles, also available online to buy. the concern is accessible and affordable to people like students. live in mill valley, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." 6:03. happening today, president obama launches a new push against drug abuse focusing on heroin and prescription pain killers, hoping to offset the impact of drug addictions by improving doctor training and expanding access to drug treatment. the white house says the

president will outline his plan on a trip to west virginia. that state is said to be one of the highest -- one with one of the highest rates of overdose deaths nchts deaths. police officers in new york city mourning the loss of one of their own after a chase turned deadly last night. authorities say 33-year-old officer randolph holder was responding to a report of a man with a gun in east harlem. when they spotted the gunman, shots rang out striking holder in the head. the gunman is in police custody. officer holder, a five-year nypd veteran died at a nearby hospital. >> we're mourning a man who gave his life as a guardian for all of us. we're humbled by officer randolph holder's example, an example of service and courage and sacrifice. >> officer holder is the fourth new york city police officer killed in the line of duty in just the last 11 months.

6:04. now to a grisly and unexpected discovery in southern california. a body uncovered within trapped cars and mud in los angeles county. workers spotted the body in an overturned suv in palmdale while hauling away the muck. no word yet on the cause of death. palmdale was one of several cities slammed by last week's rain storms. it triggered mudslides and flash floods and shut down part of interstate 5 near the grapevine. new developments in the shigella outbreak now impacting 80 people in the south bay. some of the people who got sick are now lawyering up to fight back against the restaurant believed to be the source of the bacteria. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from the santa clara county health department. this bacteria is so contagious, it looks like we could be seeing more waves after the first one. >> reporter: only solve the folks who got sick at the restaurant may be infecting other people they're coming into contact with. things are getting more and more

serious for the owner of the maris marisco's san yuan number three in do you know town san jose, the restaurant still shut down this morning as 80 people are sick and two of them now have a lawyer. marisco's san juan number three is shut down by order of the santa clara county department of environmental health. 80 people confirmed or suspected with cases of shigella. 12 people so sick or dehydrated they are in the hospital right now days later in intensive care. the county is still working to find out how the outbreak started at marisco's san juan. they do know the people who got sick initially ate at that restaurant, lunch or dinner friday or saturday. the interesting thing here is they didn't all order the same thing. both the public health director and the attorney working with those two victims say this case of shigella was unusually violent. >> most of the people that were ill are sort of middle-aged or young healthy people who you wouldn't necessarily assume

would be severely ill from shigella. >> you don't generally see 12 people, a dozen people in an icu even in some of the worst food-borne illness cases. >> reporter: that attorney also represented 16 families who contracted shigella back in 2000 in redwood city n. that outbreak one person died and more than 100 others got sick. the redwood city restaurant where they all ate and got sick is now closed for good. shigella bacteria is very contagious. so, again, some of the infections we're seeing now that we're going past the 80 mark are secondary infections where people got sick at the restaurant and then took it home or took it to work. if you have symptoms, get yourself tested. if you feel sick, don't go out. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it is 6:07. in oakland a showdown between a man wielding a machete and two cars. now detectives are searching for the driver who hit him. a neighbor caught it all on cell

phone video. it happened at about 3:00 monday morning. police say the man in the middle of the street had a machete and was lunging at several cars. that's when the driver in the red car there backed into the man while a white car eventually will come along here and bump him into the intersection. the man is reportedly okay, but he was placed on a psychiatric hold. at 6:08, beware of shoulder surfing, especially in san leandro. it's a scam where thieves watch you use an atm and then access your k. more than $9,000 have been swiped from two bank of america locations in san leandro since may. investigators say the people who were targeted, simply forgot to logout or complete their transactions. undercover officers have made two arrests. they fear more thieves are out there. >> the bank of america has other reports from customers who have not reported to the san leandro

police that their accounts have been defrauded as well. >> bank of america did issue a statement saying it takes account security very seriously and the bank has policies in place to reimburse victims of fraudulent transactions. another algae outbreak in the east bay. the blue-green sludge is growing at the big break regional shoreline. it's the sixth body of water affected in the east bay alone. park officials say the algae did not register atoxic in initial tests, but it can become toxic at any time. both people and their pets are being warned to stay out. in recent months, toxic algae has been found in lake anza, quarry lakes in fremont and in lake chabot. let's clear the air and start your work weak with some rising temperatures once again. >> after a cool start, it will be warming up again today. now in the mid 50s in the east bay, south bay as well as san francisco. north bay, 49 degrees. highs today back in the 80s in

the south bay. up to 88 degrees in gilroy. half moon bay, 78 degrees. the castro at 75 degrees. a mix of sun and clouds in san francisco, but bright sunshine in napa. oakland 82, pleasanton up to 85 degrees. still watching a problem as you approach the bay bridge. mike, what's going on? >> we have flashing lights. the last of the flashing lights, you see it's a larger trailer, looks like one of the ones you find at a construction site, for example. two were going through the area. that's why we had the flashing lights last time. as we look at the map, nothing other than that going on at the bay bridge toll plaza, everything else moves slowly. we have the build off 580 and 24 coming into the maze there. the rest of the east bay slowing, typical pattern here. we have slowing for 880 as you come down towards 92 and the san mateo bridge. a crash blocks your left lanes and slowing the the right lanes to make the transition to 92. that's a problem for that portion of hayward. a typical build for northbound

101 and quick look at palo alto shows no problems for the peninsula. back to you. breaking news in the south bay. we've been telling you about this morning, firefighters battling flames at a strip mall in sunnyvale. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell just got to the scene. what do you know so far? >> reporter: this fire here at this strip mall has four businesses in evelyn and sunnyvale. it appears the fire started -- that dark area is a barber shop. firefighters say when they arrived around 5:00 this morning, that barber shop was fully involved. even though you're seeing a lot of smoke right now, this fire is not out as of yet. part of the problem for the fire department, if you can see the roof that extends along the four businesses there, that roof is not securely held in place. it's a facade. they've had to go on the defensive, getting an aerial ladder out here. that's why they're keeping the firefighters away. their fear is as it burns, that

american airlines jet out of san jose to make an emergency at 6:14, an unruly passenger forced an american airlines jet out of san jose to make an emergency landing in phoenix. one man said that passenger would not listen to the flight crew making everyone on board nervous. the plane had not even taken off for dallas when robert schultz said he noticed the guy next to him was drunk and rowdy. he said the man demanded drinks and would not stay in his seat. once they were in the air, the situation got worse. that's when schultz helped restrain the man. >> people were definitely nervous. when he would get up to go to the bathroom, people around us were kind of giving me a look saying i wonder what he's up to, i hope that people are doing something about this kind of thing. >> after making the emergency

landing in phoenix, the man was taken off the plane. you may recall on sunday a southwest flight turned around for an emergency landing after a passenger choked the woman in front of him for reclining her seat. all new this morning, a fire risk forcing the recall of 6.5 million toyotas. the company says a faulty power window switch could short-circuit causing parts of the car to overheat and possibly could start a fire. the recall affects cars built between 2005 and 2010. toyota says it's not aware of crashes or injuries due to the glitch. scott mcgrew, people can't get their money from a prepaid debit card. >> it's called a rush card, the kind of thing you put 50 bucks on to give a kid for his birthday. or if you're in a poor community, you might have your whole paycheck or welfare check

on it. some of the rush cards are showing zero balances this morning that is caution panic among people whose literal life savings is on the card. they say they're working on the problem. ahmed mohamed got to visit the president. he's going to move to qatar. the family issued a statement saying ahmed has been offered a number of scholarships and they've chosen one from the country of qatar. dohar is home to a lot of universities including texas a&m. a big business deal in silicon valley. western digital is buying sandisk, a big $19 billion deal. yesterday i told you we didn't care what yahoo! said about its financial numbers. there were other things we needed to look at. it turns out, those numbers were actually pretty mornt, more important than we guessed.

it says ad sales not only continue to decline, they're declining in the fourth quarter. nobody declines in the fourth quarter. that's christmas, the money making time of the year. yahoo! says it's going to try to use google for search results. the last time they tried this, the government said no. the two companies were too big to work on something together, antitrust issues. this time the government may say yes but only because yahoo!'s influence on search may be so slow that you get away with it. >> 6:18 right now. new lightning fast internet and tv service can be headed to the south bay. according to the "mercury news," documents show the tech giant applied for permits to build two fiber huts in san jose, one on the south side, the other near downtown. right now google fiber is only available in six cities throughout the country.

leaders remain tight-lipid about the deal, but an official announcement could come by early decemb december. >> it wasn't that long ago that we could look behind us and see the sun coming up at 6:20. >> the days are getting shorter. normally when the days get shorter, the temperatures start to go down. >> exactly. we're waiting for that. >> that's not happening right now. it's been so warm all across the bay. so the little bit of sunshine we get warms up those temperatures rapidly. mostly clear this morning as you head out the door. it looks like things are flowing smoothly. we'll check in with mike to see if you may be slowing down during the drive to work. the current temperature now in livermore is 54 degrees, a jacket needed in concord, 53 degrees at napa, 49 degrees. mostly clear as you start out the day. we may see some fog just offshore, but all of the inland

areas looking at a clear day will start to see the clouds moving back into san francisco by 4:00, 5:00. and then later on tonight the fog starts to spread across the bay. we should have more clouds tomorrow morning than we're seeing this morning. still no changes in this pattern that allows our temperatures to ramp up during the afternoon. so at 8:00, we're at 58 degrees in oakland. at 10:00, 69 degrees, 74 degrees. looking at the highs today that will be topping out in the 70s in oakland while palo alto is at 81 degrees, san jose at 83 and the embarcadero at 84 degrees. now we're turning our attention toward the pacific because we have a category 4 hurricane out there well to the east of hawaii with wind speeds of 130 miles an hour, hurricane olaf. something we'll be watching over the next few days because it will miss hawaii but then start to curve back off towards the north and east. with an approaching system

moving in, we can see that drawing in some of that tropical moisture. the long range outlook keeps it dry as we go into the next several days with some warm temperatures. by the middle of next week, we may see some of that rain moving into the bay area. boy do we need it. so the best chance of rain looks like it doesn't come until the middle of next week. in the meantime, we're heading into a weekend that will be dry and our temperatures coming down a few degrees. so after a warm midweek, we will have some more seasonal temperatures in time for the weekend. now, mike, do you have an update on what's happening as you approach the san mateo bridge? >> we do, kari. a slowdown showing up on our sensors. the deal is, there's a come names of factors. there's a crash south 880 approaching 92. that's blocking the left two lanes, the lanes closer to the center dive vied. the right two lanes are slowing so folks can make their transition to the off-ramp. that's a tough combination right there. jammed coming out of san leandro towards hayward. once you pats 92, you're all

that black hole is, that barber shop was fully involved. unfortunately it extended to the right to a liquor store and also to the left where you have a grocery store and a taco rio. firefighters are keeping their distance from the building, on the defensive. that's the posture the chief tells us they're taking. they're taking a defensive posture for good reason. >> the biggest challenge is the common attic construction, so you have fire and smoke running the whole roof. >> why did you go on the defensive? >> we went on defensive because that front facade is extremely heavy when it's impinged by fire it can collapse and it's an extreme hazard for firefighters. we're not doing any front of the building fire attack, doing it all defensively from the roof. >> back out here live you can

from bad to worse. at least 80 people are sick with shigella after eating in a south bay restaurant, more than double the number of cases since yesterday morning. now some of the victims are lawyering up. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at the health department. what's really worrisome is the bacteria is so contagious. out don't necessarily have to have eaten at the restaurant to be at risk. >> reporter: initially the people who got sick ate at that restaurant friday, saturday. the restaurant shut down august u altogether by sunday and yet the cases doubled. this is a show of how particularly contagious this bacteria really is. right now marisco's san yuan number three on north fourth street is still shut down by order of santa clara county. there are 80 people confirmed or suspected cases of shigella. 12 of the folks are so sick or dehydrated, they're in the hospital in intensive care.

the restaurant where they all ate and got sick is shut down for good. as you mentioned, and we talked about the shigella bacteria, very contagious. there is a possibility that more people could continue to get sick even beyond the count of 80. so if you feel sick, if you've been in contact with someone who ate at that restaurant, make sure you see a doctor or call the public health department to see if you should be tested as well. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." a candlelight vigil is going to be held friday night for a san jose state student who died after passing out during water polo practice at the campus pool. ryan harkserriman was pulled unconscious from the school pool during a club team practice last tuesday. a coroner's report did not reveal what caused the 24-year-old to lose consciousness. the vigil is set for 6:00 friday night in front of clark hall. 6:38. the hunt is on for a man who attacked a 16-year-old girl in daly city.

take a look at this sketch. he's accused of sexual battery. police say the victim was walking at first and castle streets, two blocks from jefferson high school two weeks ago. that's when the man tried to talk to her. police say he slapped her when she ignored him and then grabbed her. but the girl managed to get away. burglars blending in. take a look at this surveillance video from a home in san jose taken in august. police say this woman with a guitar acted as the lookout in front of the house while her accomplice goes around the back of the house. he enters the house, burglarizes it and walks right out the front door where the woman is waiting. the pair then drive off in a red late model camaro. if you recognize those suspects or the car, call san jose police. a publicity stunt has fans of one unique band of birds squawking. >> if you haven't heard of the pair rats of telegraph hear, the
