i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we're starting out cool this morning because that's the case all week and then things change once we get into the day. >> temperatures have been warming up quickly through the late morning hours, we can expect more of the same. as we start out now in the 50s, a jacket needed before you step out the door, mostly clear skies and a lot of sun this afternoon and a high of 75 degrees in san francisco, north bay 83 degrees and 82 degrees in the south bay. it will be a couple of degrees lower than yesterday in some spots, but still pretty warm for this time of year. we will take a look ahead to the weekend and the football forecast. thursday night football coming up. mike, if you are heading across the bay bridge you may want to leave early, right? >> if you are going off of 24 and 580 because there is an unusual pattern here. look at the backup on the left approach, that's the only one with all these folks waiting for cash paying. we had a traffic break 20 minutes ago, i told you about that, around the caldecott tunnel, then the burst of

traffic, but we know that sensors have a lag. looks like that traffic has made its way to the bay bridge. that should blend in with the morning commute. eastbound 80 we have a crash at cutting boulevard. the rest of the bay is clear. we are covering breaking news this morning. we continue to monitor the chaos that is happening out of sweden this morning. just hours ago a masked man reportedly armed with a soared attacked several people inside a school before he was eventually shot by police. within the last hour we have confirmed from the hospital that one teacher has died and two students are in surgery with serious cuts. the students are 11 and 15 years old, the suspect also in surgery. his say he is in his 20s and was armed with more than one weapon. swede dish media say the school held a safety meeting with teachers just before the attack. that meeting focused on concerns the school was too open allowing anyone to come on campus. back at home we also have breaking news to tell you about

from bad to worse, a home burglary in the east bay ends with a beating. this happened after midnight in san lorenzo on via primero not far from interstate 880. bob redell joins us from the scene. sounds like the suspects that were there, left the scene and then came back. >> reporter: that's correct, sam. in the process of responding to this the alameda county sheriff's office discovered what they describe as quite a marijuana grow at this home in san lorenzo. you can see the doors are shut behind me, they have shut the doors so detectives can go in there and conduct a search. they are trying to determine whether or not this grow is illegal or not. this is after they have turned a warrant for the search early in the evening. they are still looking for the burglary descriptions. they are both hispanic men. they are interviewing the homeowner and his girlfriend who a slgt says are not being super cooperative. it was around 11:30 last night, the man came home to find the

pro two suspects inside trying to collect and steal some of the roughly 200 pot plants that he has been growing downstairs. the burglars fled briefly, then came back, beat up the homeowner. during that fight the homeowner grabbed a knife and chased them away. it was a neighbor that called 911 in spite of pleas from the home owner to let it g the sheriff's office tells us that the homeowner does have a cannabis card that he claims he is allowed to grow marijuana for medical purposes, but the sheriff's department questions whether it's illegal to have 200 plants. they believe that is well over the legal limit. reporting live here in san lorenzo, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you very much, bob. it is 5:03. happening today in just a matter of hours the sunnyvale man accused of stabbing his own parents about l. make his first appearance before the judge. 38-year-old daniel truvillo stabbed his elderly mother and father inside the home on monday. they should make a full recovery. he faces two counts of attempted

murder. so far police have not release add motive. now to a developing story, a bay area family is in mourning after a fighter jet crashed in england thousands of miles away. it's a story that we brought to you as breaking news yesterday but now we are hearing from some of the people who knew the pilot killed in that crash. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us now. his neighbors are speak being the man to lost his life abroad. >> they're shocked that he is gone because he was supposed to be headed out of harm's way and was supposed to be coming home. this is who we are talking about, major taj sareen who was headed back to miramar marine air corps station in san diego from the middle east. he was supposed to be arriving back in the home in hillsborough in weekend. sareen lived in hillsborough and that's where his mother and sister asked for some time and of course we honored that request, but we do know that he graduated from the university of san francisco with a double major in political science and economics and that he also played tennis at usf.

he lived at an apartment complex in san diego where neighbors are shocked that he survived six months of missions in the persian gulf only to die on the way home. >> super person. i mean, give you -- give you the shirt off his back, very nice, a pleasant, great person. you know, i'm just devastated that he is not here tonight. >> reporter: now, the crash still under investigation. the site where that hornet fighter jet crashed in england is under guard. we do know that major sareen ejected from that f-18-c jet but did not survive. although the fighter jet crashed near homes, folks on the ground told bbc reporters that no one on the ground was hurt. they believe that he ma nurd away from the homes in order to spare lives on the ground. >> thank you, kris. it is 5:05. a community mural dedicated to one of its artists shot and killed in oakland is now complete. the mural was unveiled yesterday by those who worked alongside

antonio ra moz, he was shot and killed last week. his memory is part of oakland's superheroes mural project. his brother spoke to the crowd at an emotional ceremony. >> we lose track of our humanity and we end up walking around doing things like what happened to my brother. >> police have not yet made an arrest in the case but they do say they're making progress. a disturbing trend in berkeley has parents and officers on high alert this morning. seven girls, seven in the last month, that's how many were nearly kidnapped in the same area that you see here on your map. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joins us live in berkeley. that community is on edge. police are taking extra steps to try to keep streets safe. >> reporter: yeah, they are. they're adding patrols to the area of college and webster and nearby schools after these most recent kidnapping attempt reports, the most recent one happening in this area 15 minutes apart on sunday. berkeley police just getting its

latest reports around 6:00 sunday night, a man approached a girl, trying to kidnap her, 15 minutes later three girls in the same area here of college and webster say they walked by a man standing next to a van who yelled at them to get inside. police say the girls ran away and started to screen when they realized the man was following them, but the girls say that's when he got into his van and drove away south on college avenue. now, this is happening just a month after a first of similar reports by three girls in two separate events on september 18th just a few blocks away from here near willard middle school on telegraph avenue so berkeley police are coordinating with the school district to discuss safety recommendations. take a look at the description here n all four reported cases in one month the same man was described, scruffy face, hispanic man, mid 20s to early 30s, and a black or dark colored

for the game as we go into this afternoon. right now let's take a look at san jose this morning as you wake up and getting things started if you have to head off to work and no football for you. it will be a warm day after a nice cool start. look at that football forecast. we will have mostly sunny skies and a temperature of 76 degrees. dropping back to about 70 degrees, absolutely perfect, wind coming in from the northwest at 5 to 10 miles an hour. now, the cloud forecast, we will start to see more clouds moving in as we go through this morning and then quickly clearing, except for san francisco. you will have more of a mix of sun and clouds and then tonight mostly clear once again. as we see these temperatures that are well above average for this time of year, so we're looking ahead to see when we could see some rain in the bay area. we will only have a slight chance of rain, models are picking up on this, by sunday afternoon and mainly for the north bay. it just kind of fizzles that rain out before it makes it

elsewhere into the bay area. then in the tropics we have hurricane olaf, the pacific really getting active w this being a category 3 it will be weakening and turning into a tropical storm early next week. as the system moves across the pacific it will pick up some of that moisture from the remnants of olaf and bring it into the bay area, we may have our first real chance of rain, widespread rain, heading into next week. if you are traveling hurricane patricia will be moving across mexico and spreading some rain across texas, maybe hearing about some flooding there as we go into early next week. we will keep you up to date on that and take a look ahead to the weekend coming up. >> back over to the south bay, we have all been mentioning the game tonight at levi stadium. as you know that means traffic in the area, a lot of congestion. the gates open, i believe, a couple hours before the game so you may see traffic in santa clara a little earlier. the traffic flow on the freer

means more homes in the as i mentioned before, you hear people complain about it all the time. not in my backyard. each if it means nor homes in the area. that's how some people feel in walnut creek as a housing project is closer to becoming a reality. dozens of people flooded the city council meeting to talk about increased traffic, less open space and potential for flooding. at issue is a site along tyson valley boulevard. the jewish community center is selling 5 acres of its important. the new building wants to demolish a community center that's been empty for years. many say the site is not ready for all that development.

an attack on the owners. >> it happened after midnight on via promera near interstate 88, "today in the bay" bob redell live in san lorenzo this morning with new details on the attack. an interesting discovery deputies made during that investigation, bob. >> reporter: laura and sam, the alameda county sheriff's office means that the two men who broke into this home last night were trying to steal some of the homeowners' 200 pot plants that he allegedly has growing downstairs. electives are inside this have home right now, they have been inside since around 4:30 this morning, that's when they were able to get a search warrant to go inside. it was around 11:30 last night the homeowner stumbled upon the two men inside, collecting these pot plants, the initial reaction from these burglars was to take off but the sheriff's department said they came back, beat up the homeowner, the homeowner was able to grab a knife and chase

them off. the homeowner also had his girlfriend come over, now they are down with the sheriff's department and being interviewed by the sheriff's department, they claim to have a cannabis card, but the sheriff's department questions whether they can have so many plants inside. the understanding is maybe that the limit is around 30 and yet they have 200 plants inside according to the sheriff's offi office. the sheriff's office says they are not being cooperative and the homeowner actually urged his neighbor not to call 911. it was a neighbor who heard the commotion, called 911. they are still looking for these burglary suspects, the only description they have is that they are both men and both hispanic and the homeowner and his girlfriend are being interviewed by the hair rifs office. bob redell, "today in the bay." we moves to a developing story, a crash overseas hits close to home here in the bay area. a local family is in mourning following a deadly fighter jet crash in england. the story we have been tracking ever since it broke early

interesting in terms of a description. police believe they are looking for a scruffy faced man in these recent kidnapping attempts, the most recent ones happening here near webster and college on the south side of town, a very popular stretch here in berkeley. just yesterday police got the latest report that around 6:00 sunday night a man approached a girl trying to kidnap here and 15 minutes later three girls say they walked by a van standing by a van who yelled at them to get inside but the girls ran away, the man chased them so they screamed and that's when the man got into his van and drove away south on college avenue. now, this is happening just a month after three girls in two other separate instances also reported some more attempted kidnappings, that was on september 18th, just a few blocks away near willard middle school on telegraph avenue. so police are also coordinating with the school district to discuss safety recommendations and what they should be doing n all four reported case by the way a very similar suspect description, scruffy faced,

you as breaking news 24 hours ago. questions swirling this morning about a fire that ripped through a strip mall in sunnyvale. last week there was another small fire is a same mall. investigators are wondering was it coincidence or intentional. the latest fire destroyed a barber shop. a shigella outbreak traced back to a san jose restaurant still growing. almost 100 people are now sick, most of them in santa clara county. health officials in san mateo and santa cruz counties say they're also investigating reported shigella cases. the majority of people who got sick ate at mariscos san juan restaurant number 3 in san jose. others may have been infected by family members. shigella is very contagious, can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. we spoke to one person sickened in that outbreak, he and his lawyer have filed a lawsuit against the restaurant owner >> i think it is reasonable after the amount of physical suffering i have gone through to

have some kind of compensation. >> another reported victim also filed a lawsuit. meantime, the downtown mariscos location still close this had morning. the health department said all employees are being tested and will need to be cleared by a doctor before coming back to work. also happening today, santa clara county public health officials will release new details about this outbreak. it's expected to happen about five and a half hours from now. we are going to stay on top of this story both on air and online today. we will bring you an update on what health officials have to say during our 11:00 newscast. one man is now staring at five years in prison for looting homes evacuated during the devastating valley wildfire. while that fire still burned authorities made several arrests across lake county. the press democrat reports one man pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary. the press democrat reports another man arrested was sentenced to 75 days for being in a restricted area. three other case right side

this is the first hearing since january. it is expected to be an eight-hour long affair. special committee is going to focus on what happened before those attacks. republicans say that this is their chance to find out why four americans died at benghazi, including bay area native chris stevens. e-mails revealed stevens asked for more security before he was killed but didn't get t clinton's team says those requests never reached her desk. >> i expect that secretary clinton will push back on the half truths and the outright fabrication of these crazy conspiracy theories. >> a "wall street journal" poll found that more than 40% of americans are not satisfied with clinton's answers concerning benghazi. the national transportation safety board will talk about faulty air bag inflaters this morning. it stems from a massive recall linked to the takata cooperation. the faulty inflaters caused the air bags to inflate with too much force sending metal shards

out there right now. >> you constantly pay and get something for it. apple making a commitment to using more renewable energy sourced from china where apple's factories make millions of digital devices. apple says 20 million melt trick tons of greenhouse gat pollution would be avoided just by using more renewable energy, primarily solar power but also wind and hydro technology. apple will be the one financing that project. this has been a recent ground swell of support to restore more bay area wetlands. the thought is it may better protect the region from the potential impact of climate change. the topic is expected to be featured at a symposium in mountain view. speakers will discuss ongoing efforts to restore salt ponds on the peninsula and south bay. today's forum includes members of the california's coastal conservancy and geological industry. what happened in the mountains of british columbia in past summer is making scientist do's a double take.

scientists say that some of canada's iconic glaciers will be gone in just decades. the hottest summer on record battered western canada's glaciers to the time that they melted two and a half times the rate of previous years. what's stunning for these researchers is how fast it's happening and just the rate of it all. >> and this is definitely the warmest year we have had on record globally. so those temperatures are just soaring well beyond what people really expected. so interesting there. it's been warm in the bay area. we know that. it's been above average heading into the end of october and we still have temperatures in the 80s out there. as we take a live look now at san francisco, mostly clear skies, we will start to see some clouds rolling in within the next couple of hours and then clearing out in time for the afternoon. if you're heading to santa clara for the game, the big game, thursday night football, we will have perfect weather, a lot of sunshine and temperature at 76

degrees at 5:00 and as the game kicks off at 5:25 we will still be in the 70s by the end of the game. we're tracking the next system moving in from the pacific, you see this large swirl of clouds that's over the ocean that will be moving into the bay area tomorrow and helping to cool off our temperatures. i don't think we will see a lot of rain out of that, but we will have a slight chance of rain on sunday, mainly in the north bay, with a cold front that will be rolling on through. we will feel the winds picking up elsewhere in the bay area. then farther on down the line we will be watching the remnants of this system, it's still a category 3 hurricane. it's well east of hawaii at this point and it will be moving over cooler water and weakening and as it does so it will be drawn in by a cold front approaching the bay area for the beginning of next week. looks like that rain doesn't get here until about wednesday, but it will be our first chance of some widespread bay area rain and that could be measurable as we go into next week. we will be keeping you up to

date on that. looking ahead to this weekend, mostly dry with the exception of that slight chance of rain for the north bay on sunday and our temperatures coming down. we will be at 87 degrees in the tri-valley on friday and then it will be 82 degrees with more clouds on sunday, our trend is looking a little bit better as we go through the rest of the week into the weekend. it will be a comfortable weekend ahead. let's see if it looks comfortable on the roads now. >> getting snugly and cozy. this is the backup, at least the slowing for north 101. there's the live cam ration folks are slowing down, it's actually starting to break up a bit over at last 15 minutes as we look at our sensors. we have seen a lot of traffic flowing, that was the first burst and that's why we see the speeds dropping down into the 50s at times as you travel north from capital expressway toward the camera and 880. that should ease off and kick in again at 6:20. no surprises for 87, just a little slowing. over here the tri-valley looks great. west 580 and south 680 just

the end of the year. it comes after the fairgrounds decided to raise the cost of doing business there from $300 to $3,000. and they say they simply can't afford it. >> i think the county forgot what animals mean. >> the town and country dog club was given the option to move to the back lot of the fairgrounds or leave. it declined the offer due to lack of lighting. the fairgrounds has not yet commented on its plans for the site. not in my backyard even if it means nor homes in the bay area. that's how some folks wheel in walnut creek as a housing project is closer to becoming a reality. dozens of people flooded last night's city council meeting to talk bin creased traffic, less open space and the potential for flooding. at issue a site along tice valley boulevard. that land is owned by the jcc, jewish community center which is selling 5 acres of its property. the new developer wants to build 53 homes, create bike lanes and add parking. they also want to demolish a

nursery and community center that's been empty for years. many say that site is not ready for all that development. >> there was supposed to have been a pipe put in down meadow road to at least put us to the 25-year flood line. >> we are going to be creating a neighborhood where there hasn't been a neighborhood before and people will be walking and biking and enjoining the beautiful lush landscaping. >> the next meeting to discuss that issue is going to take place next month. that's when a committee is going to talk about the environmental impacts of the project. a santa clara restaurant yards from levi stadium is facing the possibility of a crippling shut out when super bowl 50 comes to town. you think the location for david's restaurant couldn't be better and is often packed for niners games, but the biggest game in the world comes with big time security. the mercury news reports homeland security's 300 foot perimeter around levis starting one week before super bowl 50

weekend. i will detail that coming up, but a look at a slow down at the bay bridge. >> you expect a backup at the bay bridge but don't expect this. you can visibly see these fast track lanes moving, that means traffic flow is a little better than what we have seen for the last few thursdays. we will look at your map and don't see any real problems over toward the maze itself, as we zook out we will see more slower spots, the yoel lows creeping up. a crash, the first one at san marco cleared from west highway 4, another one right around railroad. more slowing out of antioch. concord holding steady. southbound 880 slow from hayward down toward union city. 92 and 84, the dumbarton bridge show a little increase in volume but no slowing over to the peninsula. we will see that come up in the next 20 minutes. northbound 101 a crash just reported northbound of our camera. i will show you if we see anything in the next couple
