cooling off in time for the weekend. i will detail that coming up, but a look at a slow down at the bay bridge. >> you expect a backup at the bay bridge but don't expect this. you can visibly see these fast track lanes moving, that means traffic flow is a little better than what we have seen for the last few thursdays. we will look at your map and don't see any real problems over toward the maze itself, as we zook out we will see more slower spots, the yoel lows creeping up. a crash, the first one at san marco cleared from west highway 4, another one right around railroad. more slowing out of antioch. concord holding steady. southbound 880 slow from hayward down toward union city. 92 and 84, the dumbarton bridge show a little increase in volume but no slowing over to the peninsula. we will see that come up in the next 20 minutes. northbound 101 a crash just reported northbound of our camera. i will show you if we see anything in the next couple minutes.

i want to show you the traffic volume heading down there 880 toward fremont. breaking news to report to you, just hours ago a masked man reportedly armed with a soared attacked several people inside of a school before he was shot by plit. the hospital in trollhattan confirms one teacher died, two students are in surgeries having sustained serious cuts, the students are 11 and 15 years old. that suspect is also in surgery. police say he is in his 20s and was armed with more than one weapon. so far no motive for the attack. swedish media say the school held a safety meeting with teachers just before the attack, that focused on concerns the school was too open allowing anyone to come on to campus. breaking news closer to home. two burglars are on the run in the east bay after they attacked a man inside his home in san lorenzo. >> this happened after midnight on via premero. what deputies found inside that man's home. >> reporter: sam and laura, there are roughly 200 pot plants that the homeowner had been growing inside his home here in san lorenzo. it was supposed to be a secret, but two other people learned of what was going on inside. last night around 11:30 this homeowner returned to his house to find two men who had broken to into his home trying to steal the marijuana plants. they briefly ran out, quickly returned, hit the homeowner, the homeowner grabbed a knife and chased the two burglary suspects away. it was a neighbor who actually called 911, they called the commotion, and they called 911 in spite of pleas from the homeowner not to call 911 because the deputies do not believe that he wants them to be aware of what's going on inside. they are now intervening the homeowner, the deputies are, and telling us he is not being super cooperative. >> the homeowner has a cannabis card, is a caregiver of some

sort, but the plants that he has near exceeds the limit that he should have had under his marijuana card. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's department, again, they have detectives inside after they obtained a search warrant this morning looking inside this home. again, they believe there are roughly 200 pot plants in there and they tell us that state law if you have a medical marijuana card or you are a caregiver of that sort you are only permitted 30 plants. so they are of course investigating the homeowner and still looking for its two burglary suspects, the only description is that they are both men and both hispanic. reporting live in san lorenzo, bob redell, "today in the bay." a developing story we're following this morning, the investigation into what went wrong happening thousands of miles away, but the heartache being felt right here in the bay area. a marine pilot skilled when his fighter jet went down yesterday morning in england grew up on the peninsula. joins us now. some calling that his final act very heroic. >> reporter: when that fighter jet went down near homes in england people on the ground say it appeared that the pilot maneuvered to miss those homes so no one would be hurt on the ground. that's what witnesses told the bbc about taj sareen's deadly crash. it was to be the first leg of his journey home to hillsborough. at his home in hillsborough his mother and sister asked us for some time. we honored that request. we have learned that sareen graduated from the university of san francisco with a double major in political science and economics and also played tennis. sareen lived at an apartment complex in san diego when he was working where neighbors are shocked that he survived six months of missions in the persian gulf only to die on the way home. >> super person. i mean, he would give you the shirt off his back, a very nice, a pleasant, great person. i'm just devastated that he is not here tonight.

>> the crash still under investigation. the site where the hornet fighter jet is under guard. we do know that major sareen eventually ejected from that f 18-c yet but did not survive. many people have posted public comments on facebook all echoing the same sentiments that taj sareen was a great pilot and great friend who always put others before himself. sam. >> clearly left quite an i'm paint prin on his community. happening in less than four hours health officials with santa clara county are going to give us an update on the growing shigella outbreak. the lastity almost 100 people sickened, most of them living in santa clara county. now health officials in san mateo and santa cruz counties say they are also investigating reported shigella cases. a majority of people who got sick ate at mariscos san juan restaurant number 3 in san jose. others may have been infected by family members. it is very contagious, can cause

diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain. we spoke to one person sickened in the outbreak, he and his lawyer have filed a lawsuit against the restaurant owner >> it is reasonable after the amount of physical suffering i have gone through to have some kind of compensation. >> another reported victim also filed a lawsuit. meantime mariscos still close this had morning. the health department says that all employees are being tested and they will need to be cleared by a doctor before they can come back to work. again, the santa clara county public health department will hold a news conference with an update at 10:00 this morning. we are going to have a live crew there and bring you the latest through our nbc bay area app and on air. in the meantime a san jose supermarket is back open after being shut down for rodents. the health department found an infestation inside the me pueblo market. the santa clara county health department sent inspectors back to the supermarket and found the problems were fixed. the supermarket was able to

reopen. >> now to events that look to be serial and they alarming. parents, kids and police on high alert in berkeley this morning after yet another attempted kidnapping. that now marks seven girls in just the last month who say a man tried to lure them into his van. all of this happening in the area that you see right there on your map. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us in berkeley with what police are doing to keep folks safe. >> reporter: this is top priority. we are talk being four reports of a man trying to kidnap girls in the area, each chasing some of them down. so berkeley police adding officers to areas around schools and around college and webster here because this is where the two most recent reported attempted kidnapping reports that happened minutes apart on sunday, just yesterday police got the latest report 6:00 sunday night, a man approaching a girl trying to kidnap her. 15 minutes later three girls in the same area say they walked by a man standing next to a van yelling at them to get inside,

police say the girls ran away and screamed when they realized he was going after them. the man got into his van and drove away south on college avenue. this is happening weeks after three girls in two other separate instances reported a very similar thing happening that was september 18th a few blocks away here willard middle school on telegraph avenue. police are coordinating with the school district to encourage safety recommendations and procedures. take a listen here, in all four reported cases the same man was described, we are talk being a scruffy-faced hispanic man, mid 20s to early 30s, dark hair, black or dark-colored kwul sized cargo van with no side or rear windows. along college avenue, a very busy popular street. police are checking security cameras to see if they can identify and track down this man. a fall day to start in your morning but it heats up again. kari hall has the latest in the forecast. >> it will be cool this morning as our temperatures are in the

50s right now. we are at 55 degrees in livermore in san francisco, oakland at 54 degrees, heading into the day our temperatures reaching into the 80s all across the bay area. so after a cool start expect it to get up to 83 degrees in los gatos, san mateo 76 degrees, in san francisco mid 70s, mid 80s in the north bay and we will also be anywhere from the upper 70s in oakland to 84 degrees in brentwood and some mid 80s in the tri-valley. did you find a crash in the south bay, mike? >> no, but i was looking for it. i was swinging this camera around, i point it had north so that taillights are going north on 101. we are looking for a crash around alan rock, we don't see it. we will show how on the rock where it's indicated that three vehicles are in the center divide north of our camera shot. it's light you saw from the live look and our seasonsers are showing the same thing. i expect another 12, 15 minutes and we should see a lot of slowing. we will check on this again in the next report. a little build for the

less than an hour - former secretary of state and 6:13 on your thursday morning. happening today in less than an hour former secretary of state and current democratic front runner hillary clinton is going to testify before the house committee investigating the deadly 2012 attack in benghazi. "today in the bay" tracie potts joining us live from washington, d.c. tracie, today's hearing set to focus on what happened before the attack. >> exactly. it could take a while. we're hearing she could be testifying for eight hours. lots of questions from democrats and especially republicans who want to get to the bottom of this. just a few minutes ago we learned that some of the families of the four americans who were killed will be at this hearing today. it's the first time that the benghazi committee has been able to talk to secretary clinton, she was here before speaking with another senate committee

that had seven committee investigations, a review board and still more questions. that's one of the reasons why her team and democrats think this is a partisan witch-hunt trying to answer questions that have already been answered before, but the republicans in charge say they have got new information, new documents, including 8,000 e-mails not from hillary clinton, but from ambassador chris stevens before he was killed in that attack asking for more security and not getting it from the state department. >> tracie, for many folks this feels like it's been going on forever, the investigation has been going on for almost a year and a half. that's longer than some of the investigations linked to some of the most historic moments in u.s. history. >> 17 months, longer than it took congress to investigate the jfk assassination, hurricane katrina, the pearl harbor attack, all of them shorter than this and it's still going, trey gowdy says after secretary clinton leaves today it's not

>> yesterday's announcement gave democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton a 5% boost in the polls. biden says he is dedicating himself and his office to the fight against cancer for the remainder of his term. >> new this morning, a $600 billion defense bill shot down by president obama. the white house says the president is going to veto that sweeping bill later today, citing his opposition to the way that it would be funded. president obama also poses a provision in the measure that would complicate he says the closure of guantanamo bay's detention facility. this marks the fifth veto during president obama's tenure. 16 minutes after 6:00, silicon valley ceo many on wednesday simply by showing up to a conference. >> scott mcgrew, she is walking basically right to the lion's den. >> if the lions in that den with "wall street journal" reporters. ceo the elizabeth holmes she is head of their knows a company that says it is revolutionizing the blood testing industry.

here is video of her at that conference in southern california. she had been scheduled as a guest for months but the reason this video is so startling is the journal published a devastating set of articles criticizing the foundation of her company and many wondered if she would show up much less take the stage. the company is hot because it says it invented machines that can use one drop of blood to test for a lot of different diseases and afflictions in the article the journal alleges in many cases her company is not using the machines of its own to run those tests. now, holmes says she will publish a point by point refutation of those claims sometime soon. other news, apple is telling a judge on the east coast it simply cannot open a locked iphone no matter what if that iphone is running ios 8 or 9. that's about 90% of all the iphones out there. apple says it could open an older iphone, but urged the

judge in the case not to force the company to do that. the request comes from a u.s. attorney as part of a search warrant. it's a bit fuzzy what the larger case is about. wikileaks also published many of the hacked e-mails from the director of the cia and his personal aol account. they appear to be old from before he became director. nothing super secret but there are items in there you would be surprised someone would use aol to send back and forth, for instance, an e-mail he received from the senate select committee on intelligence on what interrogation techniques or torture should and should not be allowed. we were talking earlier about that buffalo bills jacksonville jaguars game in london. it's going to be streamed online for free by yahoo. this is history, but who is going to watch? it's on at 6:30 our time. reports say yahoo is reducing the costs of its ads on line from $200,000 to $100,000 on worry not a lot of people are

francisco. we have mostly clear skies and we will start to see a few clouds moving in, but you will see a mix of sun and clouds in san francisco and temperatures still about the same as yesterday. heading to santa clara for the big game today, tailgating, we will have perfect weather. how about 76 degrees at 5:00. and then by the end of the game it's around 70 degrees. i think it will be perfect with a light wind. in san francisco let's take it hour by hour. at 9:00 we are at 60 degrees, up to 70 degrees by 1:00, once again, just like yesterday, reaching into the mid 70s, mostly sunny skies and then clear as we head into tonight. i'm watching the next system moving in. we see this large cluster of clouts over the pacific. it will be here by tomorrow. more cloud cover, slightly cooler temperatures, but i don't think we will see a lot of main out of that, although i wouldn't rule out a few sprinkles. this weekend there will be a cold front moving in, that is being picked up on some of the models to bring light rain,

especially to the north bay. the rest of us will feel the winds picking up. where the winds are v. definitely picked up well east of hawaii, we have hurricane olaf, wind speeds at 120 miles per hour. this is a category 3 but will be weakening offer the next couple of days. look at the path it takes, it curves off to the north and east and will be picked up into a system that will be moving into the bay area by the middle of next week. this may give us our first significant chance of rain for the middle of next week. we will keep you up to date on that. widespread rain possible, but our weekend stays mostly clear with the exception of that slight chance of rain for the north bay on sunday. all of us feeling slightly cooler air moving in, highs going from the low 80s in the peninsula to 75 degrees on sunday. any slow downs as you head out, mike? >> not as much as i was expecting. this is san jose north 101 just now kicking in. 6:21 we should see this building over the next five or six

summer in the fall. >> at least it feels like fall during the morning and then it warms up and it feels like summer during the afternoon. we have a wide kang rank in temperatures to expect. 47 degrees in the north bay, 55 degrees in san francisco and the peninsula. look for highs in the upper 70s in the peninsula, while the east bay tops out at 81, the north bay up to 83 degrees. so a little bit warmer than average, but we will be a little bit cooler heading into the weekend. i will talk more about that coming up. track ago low down over the san mateo bridge. mike. that's right. it's not surprising there are no incidents, but still look at 92, right on schedule. there is the slowing over to the peninsula side. i will show you the maps, the big issue is for 880 come ogg of # 8 0rks slowing for west 92 and west 94, that's the dumbarton bridge. over here the tri-valley we have a smooth drive but just in the last few minutes we have had a crash reported coming down in towards sunol, still trying to get information on whether or not lanes are blocked. you see the pattern, slowing up

to the scene at least a distraction. the map shows you north of there a smooth drive toward the bay bridge, metering lights are on. no slowing for the north bay. we have highway 4 over here in the east bay, antioch over in toward concord. the slow down sticks around. looking to the south bay your northbound routes continue to build, gently building through san jose. i will show you that live shot. we are seeing more slowing in order bound toward alum rock and mckee. this is five minutes later than we see on a thursday. at 6:31. an update to breaking news. the attack by a masked man reportedly armed with a soared who was shot by police inside a school inside sweden, happened near the city of got.burring. we've learned that a student has died, a teacher was killed, another student is in surgery. we know the students are 11 and 15 years old but don't know yet which victim did not survive.

men did find out about it and last night around 11:30 those two men broke inside this home to try to steal the homeowner's marijuana. >> the homeowner comes home, confronts the two suspects that are in his house, they had assembled some marijuana in the living room of his home that he had been growing, they fled out the back, doubled back around and came into the home again to try to retrieve the marijuana and at that time there was a confrontation, the homeowner was definitely struck by the suspect, the homeowner defends himself with a knife. >> reporter: not clear if the homeowner actually hurt the burglars with a knife but we do know that he chased them off. a neighbor heard the commotion, called 911 even though the homeowner implored him not to. turns out the homeowner according to the sheriff's office does have a card that allows him to grow marijuana for medical purposes but the shave rifs office points out that the law only allows for 3 30 plants,

was hurt. witnesses on the ground told reporters that it appeared from the ground looking up that the pilot maneuvered to miss them. laura and sam. >> selfless act facing death there. thank you very much, kris. happening later today in a matter of hours the sunnyvale man accused of stabbing his own parents is going to make his first appearance before a judge. daniel trujillo stabbed his elderly mother and father inside of his home. they are expected to make a full recovery. so far police have not released a motive behind that attack. a san jose police officer who antagonized a black lives matter on social media won't be heading to work this morning. he is no longer with the san jose police department. he drew national attention for sending out combative tweets following racial protests in ferguson, missouri, and new york city. at the time his tweets were condemned by the department. the police union and city leaders. white has been a well regarded

member of the department for more than 20 years. seven girls in just the last month, that's how many were nearly kidnapped in berkeley. now this disturbing pattern has parents on alert and more officers patrolling that area. someone tried to kidnap a girl just before 6:00 sunday at college and webster. police say a man approached the girl and tried to lure her into his van. 15 minutes later it happened again in the same a i can't to three other girls. we reported that event earlier this week. apparently also happened last month to another three girls near willard middle school on telegraph avenue. right now police are searching for a black full sized cargo van that does not have any side or rear windows. officers believe the suspect a is a hispanic man and was described by one of the girls as having dark hair and a scuffy looking face. wood burning stoves and fire leis places are l. soon be a relic of the past in the bay area which becomes the first

region in the country to ban them in new construction. they say the fine particles are one of the biggest health threats during winter. no burn days introduced back in 2008 did not go far enough to clear the air. >> par tick particular matter is our largest wintertime air pollution problem and although we have made gains at reducing the par tick particular matter we still see high levels and many days in the winter months when we exceed the federal health standard. >> if you already have a wood burning fireplace and are planning to sell your home you will need to disclose the hazards to future buyers. this new rule goes into effect november of next year. >> leading the nation here in the bay area. i want to check the forecast. are we leading the nation in temperatures? maybe that belongs to arizona. i don't know. >> i have been sticking some books and stuff in the fireplace to decorate t what do you do with it now? i don't know. >> designer.

>> now it's 55 degrees in sun sunnyvale and livermore, also in san francisco and as we go into the day it's 82 degrees for the high in san jose, san mateo 76 degrees, the embarcadero at 75 degrees. 83 degrees will be the high today in napa and oakland 77 degrees while alamo tops out at 84, we are still above average today but it will be cooling down maybe a little bit of rain for the weekend. i will have details on that coming up in less than ten minutes. let's check in with mike tracking problems force the east bay. >> we are kind of easing into the morning commute, it's a little more gentle that we often see on a thursday. we're seeing these lights, people are tapping their breaks at high street and that's cause ago blinking light effect. we don't see a lot of slowing on our sensors, it's the upper east shore freeway and you expect that, you also expect slowing for highway 4 but it's consolidated toward concord out of bay point and now we have traffic making its way to walnut creek south 680 at 24 the

jet was going down near moments homes in england people on the ground say they looked up and it seems that the pilot was maneuvering to miss them. that's what the witnesses told the bbc about major taj sareen's deadly crash. it was the first leg of his journey home to hillsborough. at the 34-year-old's home in hillsborough his mother and sister asked for some time and we will honor that request. we have learned that sareen graduated from the university of san francisco with a double major in political science and economics, he also had a master's degree in military strategy. he also played tennis at usf. sareen lived in an apartment complex when he was working down in san diego and that's where neighbors say they are shocked that he survived six months of missions in the persian gulf only to die on his way home. the site where that hornet fighter jet crashed in england is under guard. we do know that major sareen ejected from that f-8-c jet but not survive.
