good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sam brock. >> hard to believe what we're looking at right now. breaking news, hurricane patricia has become the strongest storm ever measured in the western hemisphere. it is forcing communities to prepare for the worst. it could trigger 39-foot waves and life threatening flash floods. anthony is monitoring the storm's past. at this hour, people in mexico are under a state of emergency. >> that's what we're looking at. not only under a start of emergency but they have issued mandatory evacuations. you can see category 5 patricia, it's a massive hurricane. it's continuing make it's way towards land. expected to make landfall this afternoon and it is going to be devastating. talking about mudsli slides ande

potential of downed trees, downed power lines. this will be devastating. not only heavy rain for mexico, but that thing will move into texas as we head towards the next couple of days providing lots of rain. the potential of ten inches plus in places like houston, dallas and corpus christi. at home, just quiet. 70s and 80s for today. we will talk about the forecast coming up in a little while. we are constantly updating this story across our digital platforms. this morning "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is monitoring the impact this storm will have on flights. until then, you can go to our app 24/7. more breaking news to report. a chaotic scene playing out in the streets of france. more than 40 people dead after a bus colliding with a truck. new information continuing to trickle in to the newsroom.

the bus was carrying primarily an elderly population. the death toll may be so high because the bus burst into flames. that crash happening near the city of bordeaux. police are not releasing information right now about the victims. we'll update you with the latest information as soon as we get it. five people and seven dogs lost their home three hours ago. firefighters are still mopping up now after the fire made their house unlivable it happened on sun down lane around 2:00 this morning near south capital avenue and highway 680 in east san jose. no word yet on what caused the fire. investigators are still out there on the scene. they did say right now they already know that the fire caused severe damage to that home. to a developing story in the east bay, a man accused of stabbing three grocery store workers in the east bay late last night. he is still on the loose.

"today in the bay's" b "today in the bay's" bob ridel has more. >> the fact that this man was able to stab three employees of this winco food store and get away makes police here in pittsburg concerned. we want you to get a good look at this man . this is an image from a surveillance camera from inside the store. police released that photo. the surveillance camera also captured the suspect shoplifting shaving razors, as he tried to leave the store with the razors, five employees confronted him, tried to stop him from leaving. that's when the suspect pulled out a medium-sized knife. >> about 8:30, you know, they were watching some guy, he was going to attempt to steal something. so he went through one of the lines. he was walking out. they tried to stop him. he just pulled out a knife and started stabbing everybody.

>> the suspect stabbed one employee in the back, the other two in the arms. did not harm the other two employees. five total. the three who were stabbed were taken to the hospital they are all expected to survive their injuries. he was able to escape. police arrived, they searched the area, they had a helicopter up. they had canines, but no luck in finding the suspect. they want you to look at this image. if you recognize this man, if you know who he is, they would like to hear from you. reporting live from pittsburg, "today in the bay." five east bay students out of the hospital and recovering this morning after they took the prescription drug xanax. this is the second incident just this week where local high school students have overdosed on legal drugs. the latest incident happened yesterday at lunch time in pinole valley high school. teachers were watching students stumbling around acting as if they were intoxicated. they called an ambulance and

police. >> it was found the students were under the influence of a controlled substance, which was later confirmed to be xanax. >> when i talked to one of the students, they said, man, i'm on a xanax. i said whoa, dude, you are crazy? you can really get sick and die. >> xanax is a prescription drug used to treat anxiety. five students were rushed to the hospital. two were released to their parents. earlier this week, three students in mill valley were also hospitalized after they overdosed on an over-the-counter cough medicine that in high doses can cause hallucinations. a person is dead and two others injured after a dispute over a dice game turned violent this happened at the tennessee state university in nashville late last night. police say it was an argument that turned into a fist fight and suddenly turned into a gunfight. one person is dead, three women were hit. they are expected to survive. the shooter took off and is still at large in tennessee. officers don't know whether that

person is a student. anthony has a very busy morning ahead of him. further south they're watching the path of hurricane patricia. he still has that local forecast, too. >> we are look at cloud cover here at home. not much. we will see the typical morning fog that we usually see. it will be mainly isolated to the coastline. heading through the afternoon, we will see lots of sunshine, more filtered sun because we rex pekting high, thin clouds later today ahead of a storm system moving in by sunday providing rain for the north bay. temperatures will be comfortable, back into the lower 80s for the inland valleys. mid 70s for the coastline. let's toss things over to mike and say good morning to him. >> folks, a great morning at the bay bridge. look at that, no problems at the toll plaza. heading there, look at your map, you have a slow drive west of 580 off of 24. there was an earlier crash near the interchange, 24 and 980, but that looks like it's cleared from the chp report. we still have the slow drive

susun city. this is the village green apartment complex, though firefighters have not confirmed exactly what this is. there is no word of injuries or how many units are impacted. we're watching the situation because it is still burning. we'll have updates for you throughout the morning. traffic and weather now. if you're just waking up with us, a hurricane that was a concern off the coast of mexico yesterday, seemingly just exploded in the last couple of hours. >> category 5 hurricane, patricia. it's one of the strongest recorded in the western hemisphere. we will continue to watch this closely as it continues to make landfall. expected to make landfall near puerta vallarta. this is going to do some catastrophic damage. here at home, nothing like that. it's quiet a bit of cloud cover overhead and the twinkling lights of san francisco.

this hurricane is a powerful category 5. you can clearly make out the eye there. it's going to continue to make its way towards land. it has winds up to 200 miles per hour. as it makes its way towards landfall it will weaken, but you have to go a couple hundred miles inland to get away from the wrath of this thing. as it moves towards land, by tomorrow evening it will weaken. really it will be a big storm as it makes its way through. right now, temperatures are comfortable. in the 50s for the most part with generally clear skies. 74 the high for san francisco later today. the north bay at 84. tri valley looking at temperatures in the mid 80s. also for the south bay. as we move towards the next couple of days, we have a storm system this suspected to make its way towards us as we head towards sunday. it could bring a few showers to the north bay and san francisco. that's about all we'll see from this system. otherwise a few high, thin passing clouds for the day today. same deal for tomorrow. by sunday morning we start to see a few showers cross the

north bay. temperatures today the 70s for san francisco. upper 60s at the coastline. san jose, 82. as we move towards next week we'll notice this is what you'll be watching. wednesday a more powerful storm system expected to impact the bay area that could bring substantial rain for us at home. mike is track roads this morning. how is it looking? >> looking great. we're watching for that weather. that could be an issue for the commute. right now, a car fire, earlier car fire 780 off of 680. now the fire sounds like everything is out. calmed down. we still have slowing here, 580 westbound, westbound 24, this overnight road crew scattered throughout the connector. the connector is open. we see some slowing. scheduled to be there until about 6:00 a.m. then likely clearing. the rest of the bay looks great. san mateo bridge, the foster city side, there's the flat section off the high rise westbound an easy drive right now.

we have breaking news to tell you about. hurricane patricia off the coast of puerto vallarta barrelling

towards land in mexico has picked up strength to such an extent it's being called historic. >> we are looking at a live picture from the web cam right there in the resort town where perhaps you've been. this picture not as impressive as the radar that anthony slaughter has behind him. this has never happened before. >> this is the strongest hurricane we've seen in the western hemisphere. the thing you see here, the red, all of that are cloud tops. this is an infrared satellite imagery, it shows cloud tops. the red denotes how thick the cloud tops are and how cold the temperatures are in this storm system. all of that means it's basically a powerful category 5 hurricane with winds up to 200 miles per hour. it will make landfall just south of puerto vallarta later today, and it suspected to bring 6 to 10 inches of rain. not only that, but very strong winds as well. we'll continue to watch that. also texas will take the leftover rain from this. they're expecting an additional

10 inches of rain in parts of texes from this storm system alone over the weekend. for us at home, no rain expected today. a nice day. temperatures back into the 70s and 80s. we'll talk more about our weekend weather coming up. let's go to mike. >> we have a couple of cars waiting in the cash lanes, and even on friday the metering lights will be seen on the bay bridge toll plaza. we look at your approach. we have a lot of slowing, it looks dramatic on the sensors. west 580, slower moving vehicle to about 530 will make the data look slow. prepare for one lane to be blocked there. east 580, we see slowing there. overnight road crews getting on the move. slower moving vehicles make our sensors read that. the approach here and the rest of the way very nice. back to you. >> thank you very much. some secondary school students in the east bay may be eligible for a free ride. at least when it comes to ac transit bus service. commission members yesterday voted to approve a pilot program that will offer free bus passes
