calling it "an immense tragedy." more than 40 people are dead, many of them elderly after a bus crashed into a logging truck in france. and catastrophic conditions expected in mexico. hurricane patricia is barrelling towards land breaking records and measurements in the process. "today in the bay" starts right now. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez. to that breaking news, right now hurricane patricia building up steam, becoming the strongest storm ever measured in the western hemisphere overnight and it only continues to strengthen as we speak this morning. communities are being told to brace for 200-mile-per-hour winds and weathers that could be as massive as 39 feet. >> across the world, folks are holding their breaths as this plays out. we have team coverage on this storm from its path to how it's having a trickle effect at

airports across the country. first to anthony slaughter who has been on top of this all morning. >> good morning to both of you. we're looking at the satellite imagery right now. this is hurricane patricia. it's a category 5 hurricane, the strongest that you can get. winds are up to 200 miles per hour. this is expected to make landfall later this morning and this afternoon towards puerto vallarta and they have already had mandatory evacuations in place for some resorts there. as it moves on towards land, we are expecting about 6 to 12 inches of rain from the flooding there and that's going to continue to make its way into texas. the leftovers of it. at home, we're looking at quiet conditions today and through the next couple of days. temperatures tranquil. low 80s for the inland valleys and a chance of rain next week. we'll talk about that in a little while. >> so there's definitely impact

here locally at sfo. in fact, the last airlines flight from puerto vallarta here to sfo that was due back here tonight canceled, so some people from the bay area may be stuck there. another flight from alaska airlines that was supposed to leave at 10:45 this morning also canceled. let's look at this from youtube, this is from web cams in mexico. it appears calm there, patricia is not expected to hit for many hours. some residents are preparing for the worst case scenario. for a state of emergency already declared there in mexico possibly 40-foot waves along the coast, life threatening flash flooding. popular beach resort towns are in the path of hurricane patricia. puerto vallarta has a population of 200,000. hurricane patricia is at a

category 5 with winds of about 200 miles per hour. hurricane katrina was category 3, with winds of 125 miles per hour at landfall. so we'll have to see the speeds at landfall today. the damage to the gulf coast was devastating. a lot because of the flooding which is, of course, a big problem in mexico with patricia today. remember katrina nearly 2,000 people died. we are talking about different topography and population, but what is clear is that the people in mexico are being told to take every precaution necessary. if you're flying to mexico, to puerto vallarta today, check with your airline. a lot of flights from sfo don't actually go directly to puerto vallarta. so check with the carrier. the airport in pv has been shut down today. live at sfo, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> we will be monitoring this and update this story across our digital platforms all day long. go to nbcbayarea.com and

download the free app to get the latest information 24/7. more breaking news now to report. a chaotic scene playing out in the streets of france. more than 40 people dead after a bus colliding with a truck. new information continuing to trickle in to the newsroom. the bus was carrying primarily an elderly population. emergency workers say the death toll may be so high because the bus burst into flames. that crash happening near the city of bordeaux. authorities are not releasing information about the victims, we do have calls placed to our nbc news international desk and we'll update you with the latest information as soon as we get it. >> breaking news this morning. firefighters now at scene of a big apartment fire in solano county. this is video just in to the newsroom in the last few minutes. you can see the flames shooting from the buildings there. firefighters tell us it is burning on sunset avenue in

susun city and it started about 2:30 this morning and they're still hard at work trying to put it out. a sign indicates this is the village green apartment complex. we don't know how many units are compromised, or whether or not anyone was injured. we are keeping an eye on the situation and we'll have updates on the story as soon as we get them. firefighters are mopping up after an early morning house fire that left five people and seven dogs with no place to live. this happened on sun down lane around 2:00 this morning near south capital avenue and highway 680 in east san jose. no word yet on what caused the fire. it did cause severe damage to the home but all the dogs and people got out safely. to a developing story in the east bay, three people were stabbed at a bay area grocery store and the suspect is still on the run this morning. bob redell is live in pittsburg where the search continues.

you say this stabbing all started from a confrontation over a toiletry item. >> reporter: yes. five winco store employees in pittsburg tried to stop a man who was shoplifting razor blades. this was around 8:20, 8:30 last night at the store here. the surveillance camera not only caught him -- an image of him but caught him shoplifting. this is what he looks like. apparently as he left the store, those five employees confronted him, and unfortunately that's when this man pulled out a medium sized knife and started stabbing. he stabbed three employees. here's what one witness had to say about what they saw. >> i just seen one of the guys on the floor. he was stabbed. the other security guard he got stabbed. then the guy took off. i work here, somebody comes in here with a knife, trying to

stea steal. >> reporter: of the five employees who con fronted the suspect, three were stabbed, one in the back, the other two in the arm. all injuries are nonlife threatening. during that sound bite you probably heard a helicopter in the background. law enforcement had a chopper ups well as canines trying to find the suspect. they had no luck last night, that's why they released this image of him in case you recognize him. police would love to have you call them. reporting from pittsburg, bob redell, "today in the bay." a wanted felon behind bars thanks to the work of a palo alto police dog. christopher snyder had multiple warrants out for his arrest. police tracked him down earlier in the week. he tried to run away but was not fast enough for the police dog. the dog chased snyder and bit him. snyder was taken to jail. in the north bay, helicopter is on the way for people who need to evacuate large animals

during wildfires or other disasters. solano county leaders say all too often horse and livestock owns are forced to scramble when there's a major wildfire. now the county's animal control division will have a specifically designed trailer to help and it's paid for with fema funding it has space for animal equipment, storage and corral panels to hold large animal during evacuations. we will keep you updated throughout the morning on hurricane patricia. let's find out what it's looking like outside your doorstep this morning. nice and clear. >>y. no fog this morning. no cloud cover. things will start off bright, once we see the sun come up. temperatures are cool. you can tell it is fall out there. right in the 50s for the most part. as we head through the day, temperatures will rebound. we'll feel more summerlike heading towards the afternoon hours. back to the 70s for many of us. inland valleys in the low to mid 80s. north bay, tri valley. we are talking about cooling ahead. you will notice as the seven-day

forecast cops up, the approaching storm system will make its way towards us as we head towards the next couple of days. we'll continue to track cloud cover as it moves through. high and mid level clouds, so not overly sunny. by the time we get into sunday morning, we will see a few showers. temperatures comfortable today, 60s and 70s at the coastline. 80s for the inland valleys. let's talk to mike. >> very calm in the traffic center. looking at this map of the bay, no major concerns. where it's not green, it's down to about 60 for the yellow. a little slowing for the altamont pass in towards liv livermore. we have 24 and 980, the slowing we saw there, that's cleared from the sensors. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, a live camera there. we see the cash lanes on the left, starting a little cash backup. the north bay a little slowing. a few more cars hit the road. nothing big. no problems. back to you.

still this committee is not done. because at the end of that marathon hearing, the chair they still got more witnesses to interview. sam? >> tracie potts, thank you very much for that report. and new details on the first u.s. soldier to die in iraq in four years. killed during what's being called one of the largest hostage rescues in recent memory. this nbc animation shows what happened as u.s. commandos led the storming of an isis prison yesterday in northeastern iraq. the unidentified u.s. soldier who died is the first to be killed in american combat against isis. commandos stormed that prison before dawn and the raid led to the rescue of some 75 hostages. about a dozen isis fighters were killed. he made it official. paul ryan in a letter to his gop colleagues declared his candidacy for speaker of the house. the wisconsin congressman wrote "i'm ready and eager to be your speaker."

he has support from the republican party's most conservative area, the tea party or the house freedom caucus. two-thirds of that party's members agreed to back him. the full house votes on a speaker next thursday. turning to business news, amazon surprised investors by making a profit. scott mcgrew, that's what businesses are supposed to do. >> if your lips to the cfo's ear. amazon generally doesn't make a profit, and they wouldn't have except for this, the cloud. i can't show you the amazon cloud, but amazon's cloud is making a ton of money. technically it's called amazon web services. it is one of the most brilliant things amazon has done. years ago it started renting computer time and service space to other companies. if you want to start a software company or an app, tinder or netflix, you just create the program but it runs on amazon's cloud. all kind of companies you use every day do this. i this quote from this analyst,

after testing the in a few classrooms last year, the school dumped all of the old-fashioned desks and replaced them with taller models. studies have long documented the many health problems tied to sitting too much and teachers say they're seeing a big difference in the behavior of students. >> i notice that i can hold their attention for longer. i feel like they're brains and bodies are active and more awake. >> in case you are wondering, students can take a see the if they start to feel tired. the biggest challenge is the cost. parents had to raise $110,000 to help pay for those new desks. my older daughter would have loved that one. she's so wiggly, she falls out of her see the sometimes. >> we still have a couple wiggle worms. >> if you don't have nervous energy, what's the point of being a kid. >> that's it. >> that's when you play dodge ball. >> and the little swivel at the

bottom of the desk. >> this morning we've been talking about hurricane patricia. i want to off with this shot from puerto vallarta, just to give you a glimpse what's happening there. we have some cloud cover, maybe you're wiggling in your chair, wanting to hit the beach, you can do that at home but they'll be wigglingxño#=?#j)q)e across ports of puerto vallarta. they're talking about a category 5, the strongest recorded in the western hemisphere. if you are doing traveling across this location, you may want to change plans. they'll be left with catastrophic devastation. winds now, 200 miles per hour. as this thing moves inland t will weaken but it's expected to make landfall just south of puerto vallarta later this afternoon and eventually moving into texas. they are expecting 6 to 12 inches of on top of strong winds. here at home, a nice day. waking up to clear skies across the bay area. 50s across the entire bay. heading into today, temperatures will rebound to 74 for san francisco. 77 for the east bay.

79 for the peninsula the tri valley will be warm, 86. the north bay and south bay will be back to the low to mid 80s. over the next couple of days, tracking this storm system which will move in primarily offering cloud cover and cooling. for some of us across the north bay we will see a few light showers, mainly across the north bay. not expecting a wide range of rainfall this go-around, as we move towards next we will look at a stronger system that could bring rain by wednesday. your micro climate forecast for today, 82 for san jose, 78 for san mateo. in the north day, 85 for santa rosa. walnut creek, 85. the tri valley, temperatures ranging into the mid 80s. that next storm system will move in for wednesday, bringing in a better chance of rain. more on that coming up in my next report. mike, how are the roads? >> you have your micro climate, i have a micro commute this is oakland past the coliseum up north. let's look at that same flow of traffic on the maps. green all over, including just a

anthony slaughter. the location of the storm just as critical as the strength. patricia heading for a dense, populated area. >> puerto vallarta has already issued mand evatory evacuations. this is a category 5, the highest you can get on the saffir-simpson scale. it is going to make landfall just south of puerto vallarta this afternoon and this evening. they expect to see 6 to 12 inches of rain along with very deadly winds. along with that, the remnants of this thing will make its way over towards texas. they expect to see 5 to 8 inches, maybe 10 inches in some places. today, we'll see a few high thin passing clouds. there's a chance of rain in the seven-day forecast. >> aot of fallout from patricia. thank you very much. let's turn to "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live at sfo. we know the storm already having

an impact on airports across the nation. you are looking at sfo. also comparing the size with hurricane katrina. >> reporter: that's right. just to compare, to give you the peoples perspective on impact, but definite impact to people who are traveling. of course in puerto vallarta there have been flights canceled to and from because the airport there is closed. it's shut down, including one that was supposed to leave sfo at 10:45 this morning. that's been canceled. looking at web cams from mexico, this is streaming on youtube. it's calm there. but as we heard anthony say puerto vallarta under mandatory evacuations. resorts have been evacuated. residents are preparing for the worst case scenario. a state of emergency already declared in mexico. possibly 40-foot waves along the coast and life threatening flash flooding. puerto vallarta, 200,000 people

there. to put this in perspective, patricia's winds are about 200 miles per hour, expected to remain at category 5 through landfall. hurricane katrina was a category 3, with winds of 125 miles per hour at landfall. the damage to the gulf coast was devastating, a lot of it due to flooding which is a big problem in mexico. nearly 2,000 people died in katrina. we're talking about different kinds of areas, populations, but it's clear people in mexico today are being told to take every precaution to keep themselves safe. people from the bay area may be stuck down there and some alaska airlines flights that were supposed to land have been canceled. we'll keep checking to see the status of the flights back here at sfo. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. steph will stay at sfo

from the buildings there. firefighters say this started around 2:30 this morning on sunset avenue at the village green apartments. firefighters are not saying anything about injuries or how many families may be displaced. we're working with them to get you information. we are keeping an eye on the situation and we'll have updates on the story as soon as we get them. about five people and seven dogs lost their homes several hours ago. firefighters are still mopping up after the fire that made that house unlivable for that family. this happened on sun down lane around 2:00 this morning near south capital avenue and highway 680 in east san jose. no word yet on what caused the fire. investigators say it did cause severe damage to that home. to a developing story in the east bay now, a man is accused of stabbing three grocery store workers in the east bay late last night and he's still on the loose this morning. bob redell is live in pittsburg

where police continue to search for that suspect. they're cautioning the community there that this man is considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: what makes pittsburg police so concerned, kris, is the fact that this man was able to stab three employees at the winco food store in pittsburg and get away with. store surveillance camera captured this image of the man. police want you to look to see if you recognize him. it also captured him shoplifting shaving razors. as he tried to leave the store, five employees of the winco store confronted him, tried to stop him from leaving, that's when the suspect pulled out a medium sized knife. >> about 8:30, they were watching some guy, i guess he was going to attempt to steal something. he went through one of the lines. he was walking out. they tried to stop him. he pulled out a knife and started stabbing everybody.

>> reporter: the suspect stabbed one employee in the back, the other two in the arms. even though the employees had to be taken to the hospital, none of the injuries are life threatening. the suspect did flee the area. police put up choppers, they had canines out here looking for him. if you recognize him from that image, the police would like you to call 911. reporting live in pittsburg, bob redell, "today in the bay." san jose police searching for three burglars this morning after a bloody confrontation with a homeowner in san jose. 29-year-old albert soumountha says that he arrived at his greenpark way home in south san jose earlier then usual yesterday. when he walked inside the house, he found three burglars inside. >> at that point, i told them get the hell out of my house. one of them decided to fight with me. so i fought with him for a little bit. he ran out. i ran out to see if i could get a license plate.

that's when one shot me. it happened so fast. my arm dropped. that's it. >> brave to confront them. luckily soumountha was not seriously injured. all three suspects got away in a blue honda accord. a bay area murder suspect is on the run -- was on the run for 18 years, but is now in cuffs in mexico. the fbi tracked down ruben lopez ramirez to the guadalajara area. he was arrested last week. ramirez and his brother hired three mexican mafia members to kill a san jose man back in 1997. the three were arrested and found guilty, but the ramirez brothers fled the country. ruben ramirez will be tried in mexico. the search for his brother continue continues. >> happening today, the man accused of groping several children while they were swimming at uc berkeley's pool will answer to those charges in

court today. ryan mccorvey was arrested wednesday morning. he is accused of swimming up to the victims, grabbing them inpro inappropriately and swimming away. police say there still could be more victims. five east bay students are out of the hospital recovering this morning after taking the prescription drug xanax. this is the second incident just this week where local high school students have overdosed on legal drugs. the latest incident happened yesterday at lunch time in pinole valley high school. teachers were watching students stumbling around acting as if they were intoxicated. they called an ambulance and police. >> it was found the students were under the influence of a controlled substance, which was later confirmed to be xanax. >> when i talked to one of the students, they said, man, i'm on a xanax. i said whoa, dude, you are crazy? you can really get sick and die. >> xanax is a prescription drug

used to treat anxiety. five students were rushed to the hospital. two were released to their parents. earlier this week, three students in mill valley were also hospitalized after they overdosed on an over-the-counter cough medicine that in high doses can cause hallucinations. continuing coverage now, the shigella outbreak has spread to four bay area counties. the latest area to get hit, alameda. alameda joins santa clara, san mateo and santa cruz counties. the major cull mitt is here, mariscos san juan number 3 in san jose. the first few people who got sick ate at that restaurant on friday or saturday last weekend and the illness quickly spread from there. at last update, 110 cases have been reported. 12 people had go to the icu for treatment. one bay area county is taking drastic stepses ahead of what could be a stormy winter.

right now, a legion of local volunteers in marin county are training for a critical mission that could save lives. the community collaborative rain, hail snow network is recruiting more than 1300 so-called weather watchers to gather and share vital weather information for first responders. this is all in hopes of preparing far inned advance of potential flooding. >> in marin, you can get a huge spread one mile away. it's hard to anticipate unless we have people on the ground verifying what they're seeing. >> so far marin county has doubled the number of weather watchers, but they do want more in other counties. if you would like more information on how you can set up to be a weather watcher go to our website, nbcbayarea.com and search the key words el nino help. horrified watching what's happening now off the coast of mexico. the latest on breaking news we've been following all

morning. hurricane patricia now continuing to barrel towards mex and it's being considered, according to meteorologists, the strongest storm recorded in the western hemisphere. they're bracing for massive waves up to 40 feet high and bad weather conditions. anthony slaughter is tracking the path. what can you tell us? >> this storm system is a category 5. you compare this to previous hurricanes, you have go back to 1949 to see anything that rivals this. we're talking about there hurricane making its way towards puerto vallarta. later on this afternoon. they have not seen this, again, since 1949. it's been quite some time since we've seen a hurricane this magnitude. again, it goes down right now as the strongest in the western hemisphere as far as the pacific storms go. we are expecting flooding rains from that across parts of mexico. 6 to 12 inches of rain across

manufactured in china from timber that was illegallied in eastern russia. the company will now pay $13 million in fines. that is the largest penalty ever under a federal act which bans trafficking of illegally sourced timber. one of the world's largest retailers of dietary supplements is accused of selling products spiked with illegal drugs. the suit filed by oregon's attorney general alleges that gnc new as early as 2007 that it was sell thousands of supplements containing two illegal synthetic ingredients. those are picamilon and bmpea which are not approved in the u.s. and considered potentially dangerous. gnc says the claims are without merit. airbnb is apologizing after an ad campaign fell flat with some san franciscan. look at this ad on market street. it says dear board of education use some of the $12 million in hotel taxes to keep music in schools. airbnb was trying to suggest how

changed the way we search its site. >> scott mcgrew no fanfare but this is a big change. >> you can search global rly fo things in the news feed. you can find anything people are talking about on facebook whether you know them or not this makes the news feed much more powerful. trillions of postings can be searched. let me point out your old posts can be searched there as well. you can use this new search feature to figure out what people are talking about, find new friends that are into the same things you are. here's an example. let's say you want to try out that vietnamese restaurant in the ferry building, the slanted door. when you search slanted door in facebook, you will find not just their facebook page but people talking about the restaurant, whether you're friends with them or not. mark zuckerberg and his wife are launching a school in palo alto. we don't have video of that school specifically. it's not open yet, but it's similar to this idea called alt
