"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez. to that breaking news, right now hurricane patricia building up steam, becoming the strongest storm ever measured in the western hemisphere overnight and it only continues to strengthen as we speak this morning. communities are being told to brace for 200-mile-per-hour winds and weathers that could be as massive as 39 feet. >> across the world, folks are holding their breaths as this plays out. we have team coverage on this storm from its path to how it's having a trickle effect at

airports across the country. first to anthony slaughter who has been on top of this all morning. >> good morning to both of you. we're looking at the satellite imagery right now. this is hurricane patricia. it's a category 5 hurricane, the strongest that you can get. winds are up to 200 miles per hour. this is expected to make landfall later this morning and this afternoon towards puerto vallarta and they have already had mandatory evacuations in place for some resorts there. as it moves on towards land, we are expecting about 6 to 12 inches of rain from the flooding there and that's going to continue to make its way into texas. the leftovers of it. at home, we're looking at quiet conditions today and through the next couple of days. temperatures tranquil. low 80s for the inland valleys and a chance of rain next week. we'll talk about that in a little while. >> so there's definitely impact

here locally at sfo. in fact, the last airlines flight from puerto vallarta here to sfo that was due back here tonight canceled, so some people from the bay area may be stuck there. another flight from alaska airlines that was supposed to leave at 10:45 this morning also canceled. let's look at this from youtube, this is from web cams in mexico. it appears calm there, patricia is not expected to hit for many hours. some residents are preparing for the worst case scenario. for a state of emergency already declared there in mexico possibly 40-foot waves along the coast, life threatening flash flooding. popular beach resort towns are in the path of hurricane patricia. puerto vallarta has a population of 200,000. hurricane patricia is at a

category 5 with winds of about 200 miles per hour. hurricane katrina was category 3, with winds of 125 miles per hour at landfall. so we'll have to see the speeds at landfall today. the damage to the gulf coast was devastating. a lot because of the flooding which is, of course, a big problem in mexico with patricia today. remember katrina nearly 2,000 people died. we are talking about different topography and population, but what is clear is that the people in mexico are being told to take every precaution necessary. if you're flying to mexico, to puerto vallarta today, check with your airline. a lot of flights from sfo don't actually go directly to puerto vallarta. so check with the carrier. the airport in pv has been shut down today. live at sfo, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> we will be monitoring this and update this story across our digital platforms all day long. go to nbcbayarea.com and

susun city and it started about 2:30 this morning and they're still hard at work trying to put it out. a sign indicates this is the village green apartment complex. we don't know how many units are compromised, or whether or not anyone was injured. we are keeping an eye on the situation and we'll have updates on the story as soon as we get them. firefighters are mopping up after an early morning house fire that left five people and seven dogs with no place to live. this happened on sun down lane around 2:00 this morning near south capital avenue and highway 680 in east san jose. no word yet on what caused the fire. it did cause severe damage to the home but all the dogs and people got out safely. to a developing story in the east bay, three people were stabbed at a bay area grocery store and the suspect is still on the run this morning. bob redell is live in pittsburg where the search continues.

you say this stabbing all started from a confrontation over a toiletry item. >> reporter: yes. five winco store employees in pittsburg tried to stop a man who was shoplifting razor blades. this was around 8:20, 8:30 last night at the store here. the surveillance camera not only caught him -- an image of him but caught him shoplifting. this is what he looks like. apparently as he left the store, those five employees confronted him, and unfortunately that's when this man pulled out a medium sized knife and started stabbing. he stabbed three employees. here's what one witness had to say about what they saw. >> i just seen one of the guys on the floor. he was stabbed. the other security guard he got stabbed. then the guy took off. i work here, somebody comes in here with a knife, trying to

stea steal. >> reporter: of the five employees who con fronted the suspect, three were stabbed, one in the back, the other two in the arm. all injuries are nonlife threatening. during that sound bite you probably heard a helicopter in the background. law enforcement had a chopper ups well as canines trying to find the suspect. they had no luck last night, that's why they released this image of him in case you recognize him. police would love to have you call them. reporting from pittsburg, bob redell, "today in the bay." a wanted felon behind bars thanks to the work of a palo alto police dog. christopher snyder had multiple warrants out for his arrest. police tracked him down earlier in the week. he tried to run away but was not fast enough for the police dog. the dog chased snyder and bit him. snyder was taken to jail. in the north bay, helicopter is on the way for people who need to evacuate large animals

during wildfires or other disasters. solano county leaders say all too often horse and livestock owns are forced to scramble when there's a major wildfire. now the county's animal control division will have a specifically designed trailer to help and it's paid for with fema funding it has space for animal equipment, storage and corral panels to hold large animal during evacuations. we will keep you updated throughout the morning on hurricane patricia. let's find out what it's looking like outside your doorstep this morning. nice and clear. >>y. no fog this morning. no cloud cover. things will start off bright, once we see the sun come up. temperatures are cool. you can tell it is fall out there. right in the 50s for the most part. as we head through the day, temperatures will rebound. we'll feel more summerlike heading towards the afternoon hours. back to the 70s for many of us. inland valleys in the low to mid 80s. north bay, tri valley. we are talking about cooling ahead. you will notice as the seven-day

bottom of the desk. >> this morning we've been talking about hurricane patricia. i want to off with this shot from puerto vallarta, just to give you a glimpse what's happening there. we have some cloud cover, maybe you're wiggling in your chair, wanting to hit the beach, you can do that at home but they'll be wigglingxño#=?#j)q)e across ports of puerto vallarta. they're talking about a category 5, the strongest recorded in the western hemisphere. if you are doing traveling across this location, you may want to change plans. they'll be left with catastrophic devastation. winds now, 200 miles per hour. as this thing moves inland t will weaken but it's expected to make landfall just south of puerto vallarta later this afternoon and eventually moving into texas. they are expecting 6 to 12 inches of on top of strong winds. here at home, a nice day. waking up to clear skies across the bay area. 50s across the entire bay. heading into today, temperatures will rebound to 74 for san francisco. 77 for the east bay.

where police continue to search for that suspect. they're cautioning the community there that this man is considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: what makes pittsburg police so concerned, kris, is the fact that this man was able to stab three employees at the winco food store in pittsburg and get away with. store surveillance camera captured this image of the man. police want you to look to see if you recognize him. it also captured him shoplifting shaving razors. as he tried to leave the store, five employees of the winco store confronted him, tried to stop him from leaving, that's when the suspect pulled out a medium sized knife. >> about 8:30, they were watching some guy, i guess he was going to attempt to steal something. he went through one of the lines. he was walking out. they tried to stop him. he pulled out a knife and started stabbing everybody.

>> reporter: the suspect stabbed one employee in the back, the other two in the arms. even though the employees had to be taken to the hospital, none of the injuries are life threatening. the suspect did flee the area. police put up choppers, they had canines out here looking for him. if you recognize him from that image, the police would like you to call 911. reporting live in pittsburg, bob redell, "today in the bay." san jose police searching for three burglars this morning after a bloody confrontation with a homeowner in san jose. 29-year-old albert soumountha says that he arrived at his greenpark way home in south san jose earlier then usual yesterday. when he walked inside the house, he found three burglars inside. >> at that point, i told them get the hell out of my house. one of them decided to fight with me. so i fought with him for a little bit. he ran out. i ran out to see if i could get a license plate.

that's when one shot me. it happened so fast. my arm dropped. that's it. >> brave to confront them. luckily soumountha was not seriously injured. all three suspects got away in a blue honda accord. a bay area murder suspect is on the run -- was on the run for 18 years, but is now in cuffs in mexico. the fbi tracked down ruben lopez ramirez to the guadalajara area. he was arrested last week. ramirez and his brother hired three mexican mafia members to kill a san jose man back in 1997. the three were arrested and found guilty, but the ramirez brothers fled the country. ruben ramirez will be tried in mexico. the search for his brother continue continues. >> happening today, the man accused of groping several children while they were swimming at uc berkeley's pool will answer to those charges in

court today. ryan mccorvey was arrested wednesday morning. he is accused of swimming up to the victims, grabbing them inpro inappropriately and swimming away. police say there still could be more victims. five east bay students are out of the hospital recovering this morning after taking the prescription drug xanax. this is the second incident just this week where local high school students have overdosed on legal drugs. the latest incident happened yesterday at lunch time in pinole valley high school. teachers were watching students stumbling around acting as if they were intoxicated. they called an ambulance and police. >> it was found the students were under the influence of a controlled substance, which was later confirmed to be xanax. >> when i talked to one of the students, they said, man, i'm on a xanax. i said whoa, dude, you are crazy? you can really get sick and die. >> xanax is a prescription drug

used to treat anxiety. five students were rushed to the hospital. two were released to their parents. earlier this week, three students in mill valley were also hospitalized after they overdosed on an over-the-counter cough medicine that in high doses can cause hallucinations. continuing coverage now, the shigella outbreak has spread to four bay area counties. the latest area to get hit, alameda. alameda joins santa clara, san mateo and santa cruz counties. the major cull mitt is here, mariscos san juan number 3 in san jose. the first few people who got sick ate at that restaurant on friday or saturday last weekend and the illness quickly spread from there. at last update, 110 cases have been reported. 12 people had go to the icu for treatment. one bay area county is taking drastic stepses ahead of what could be a stormy winter.

right now, a legion of local volunteers in marin county are training for a critical mission that could save lives. the community collaborative rain, hail snow network is recruiting more than 1300 so-called weather watchers to gather and share vital weather information for first responders. this is all in hopes of preparing far inned advance of potential flooding. >> in marin, you can get a huge spread one mile away. it's hard to anticipate unless we have people on the ground verifying what they're seeing. >> so far marin county has doubled the number of weather watchers, but they do want more in other counties. if you would like more information on how you can set up to be a weather watcher go to our website, nbcbayarea.com and search the key words el nino help. horrified watching what's happening now off the coast of mexico. the latest on breaking news we've been following all

morning. hurricane patricia now continuing to barrel towards mex and it's being considered, according to meteorologists, the strongest storm recorded in the western hemisphere. they're bracing for massive waves up to 40 feet high and bad weather conditions. anthony slaughter is tracking the path. what can you tell us? >> this storm system is a category 5. you compare this to previous hurricanes, you have go back to 1949 to see anything that rivals this. we're talking about there hurricane making its way towards puerto vallarta. later on this afternoon. they have not seen this, again, since 1949. it's been quite some time since we've seen a hurricane this magnitude. again, it goes down right now as the strongest in the western hemisphere as far as the pacific storms go. we are expecting flooding rains from that across parts of mexico. 6 to 12 inches of rain across

parts of texas over the weekend into next week. they're expecting catastrophic flooding there as well. for us at home, just quiet. a few high, thin clouds passing by. temperatures back into the 70s and 80s. we have a chance of rain in the seven-day forecast. more on that in a bit. let's go to mike and see how the roads are going. >> that was jarring, the size of that hurricane in relation to the size of mexico. this change at the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on. even on friday we have that. the backup fills in the toll plaza. it's a lighter friday commute, no slowing for the east shore freeway, 880 coming into the area that will start to build over the next half hour. we have mild slowing for bay point and also for antioch highway 4. at the bottom of the screen a little slowdown approaching the dublin interchange. the volume is building. a slowdown for 101 north of 680. i'll give it ten minutes then we'll look at the live camera right now it's not exciting. that's great for the morning

manufactured in china from timber that was illegallied in eastern russia. the company will now pay $13 million in fines. that is the largest penalty ever under a federal act which bans trafficking of illegally sourced timber. one of the world's largest retailers of dietary supplements is accused of selling products spiked with illegal drugs. the suit filed by oregon's attorney general alleges that gnc new as early as 2007 that it was sell thousands of supplements containing two illegal synthetic ingredients. those are picamilon and bmpea which are not approved in the u.s. and considered potentially dangerous. gnc says the claims are without merit. airbnb is apologizing after an ad campaign fell flat with some san franciscan. look at this ad on market street. it says dear board of education use some of the $12 million in hotel taxes to keep music in schools. airbnb was trying to suggest how

the city should use the money the company generates in hotel taxes, there were a few other ads focused on parks as well. people took their outrage to social media. >> it really attacks a lot of individuals that try to keep the schools in place. so, yeah. i think it's totally inappropriate. >> i thought it was a weird tone-deaf response. and kind of strangely jabby. >> airbnb took the ads down quickly, saying briefly the intent was to show how the taxes could be used for the city. >> the people they offended will be the same ones voting for more regulation for airbnb. >> i think they said stick to your business. facebook just quietly

changed the way we search its site. >> scott mcgrew no fanfare but this is a big change. >> you can search global rly fo things in the news feed. you can find anything people are talking about on facebook whether you know them or not this makes the news feed much more powerful. trillions of postings can be searched. let me point out your old posts can be searched there as well. you can use this new search feature to figure out what people are talking about, find new friends that are into the same things you are. here's an example. let's say you want to try out that vietnamese restaurant in the ferry building, the slanted door. when you search slanted door in facebook, you will find not just their facebook page but people talking about the restaurant, whether you're friends with them or not. mark zuckerberg and his wife are launching a school in palo alto. we don't have video of that school specifically. it's not open yet, but it's similar to this idea called alt

about anything like that. no rain like that. no high cloud tops like we were showing. we expect a nice rebound to the day with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. storm system off the coastline will give us some cooling. today temperatures will be summer-like. heading into the weekend, temperatures cool off for the inland valleys. we will see rain across the north bay on sunday, but that's where it will stay, across the bay. temperatures today back into the 80s for the south bay. a range of 60s to 80s for the peninsula. same for san francisco. temperatures in the 60s and 70s. santa rosa up to 85, same for walnut creek and 58 for livermore. we have a chance of on sunday and wednesday. we will talk more about that later. let's toss things over to mike. >> i have to apologize, i spoke boldly that there was a reason for me to be here, perhaps not. looking at 101, i thought it
