she's got a new album. her fans are just so -- they love her. they are passionate, as you see there, and so are we. thrilled to have her on the plaza. >> right to our top story this morning. we've got breaking news, a deadly collision between a tour bus and a truck in france's popular wine country. nbc's keir simmons is with us. this is awful. what can you tell us about it. >> reporter: good morning. the french are waking up to a tragedy here, a head-on collision between a bus and a truck that became a gigantic blaze, according to witnesses, and on board the bus was a group of retirees. it happened at 7:30 this morning french time overnight your time, and as we speak, french leaders, including the prime minister, are heading to the scene. the horrifying remains of the bus still smoking, a burned out shell where 42 people died. the worst accident in france for over 30 years, a collision with a truck carrying lumber on a remote road near the famed wine country of bordeaux.

rescue teams airlifted the injured to the hospital and nine escaped alive according to reports. survivors seen wrapped in foil blank totes keep warm. relatives embracing in shock, and reports say all of the passengers killed were members of a retirement group on a one-day tour. the french president said this morning he was plunged into sadness by the tragedy and promised a full investigation. the road where the accident happened said to be notoriously dangerous. now it has taken the lives of at least 43 people, who despite the efforts of 60 firefighters, could not be saved. and the french interior ministry is warning the number of dead may climb. four of the injured are in serious condition and two with head traumas, two with serious burns, and savannah and carson, just to understand the impact of this. it's reported only 700 people live in the village where many of the elderly passengers come from, so everyone there will know someone who died.

>> that's so sad. keir simmons with the latest on this breaking news. thanks very much. hurricane patricia now the strongest storm ever measured on the planet and bearing down on the mexico coast where people are being urged to prepare for the worst case scenario. al, what can you tell us? >> last year hurricane odile caused billions of dollars in damage and lots of deaths. this could be much worse. as we continue to track this, this storm is going to affect the texas-louisiana gulf coast line. here's what we know. over 200-mile-per-hour winds. if they makes landfall, and we expect it will, somewhere around the puerto vallarta area, right now 245 miles south of puerto vallarta and 200-mile-per-hour winds. moving quickly at north northwest at 12 miles per hour. this will be the first category 5 storm to hit the pacific mexican coast at 205 miles per hour. it makes landfall by friday afternoon. it starts to lose its strength, but that moisture also makes its way into texas, and so we are going to be looking right now at very serious conditions.

flash flood watches already in effect today for much of texas into early next week. moisture from the gulf and moisture from hurricane patricia going to both affect, and we've got hurricane coastal flood watches and warnings from texas all the way into louisiana. rip currents, coastal flooding. today north central texas is in the bull's-eye. upwards of five inches of rain for waco. tomorrow more of the same, but it starts to spread into louisiana. significant flooding from houston, austin and corpus christi, texas, and then as we move into sunday the heavy rain continues. guys, by the time we get to monday, we could be talking a foot to a foot and a half of rain in parts of texas. flash flooding is going to be catastrophic. we are going to be watching this all weekend long. >> wow. a lot going on in your department. check back in an minute. to politics and hillary clinton's marathon congressional testimony on benghazi. the highly anticipated meeting went on longer than expected. 11 hours in all and didn't wrap up until 9:00 last night. republicans grilled the former secretary of state over

the attack, why more wasn't done to protect american diplomats overseas, and yet, clinton's e-mails, too. nbc's andrea mitchell watched it all. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. hillary clinton and those house republicans sparred over benghazi all day, and well into the night. >> so far today i've said good morning, good afternoon. >> you all serving breakfast, congressman. >> reporter: for 11 hours there was plenty of political theater. >> i don't care if you sent it by morse code, carrier pigeon, smoke signals. what is relevant is the that he was sending information to the secretary of state. >> i've heard one dismissive thing after another. it was this group. it was that group. i wasn't served by this. i wasn't served by that. what did you do? what do you own? >> well, i was just telling you some of the many related issues i was working on to try to help the libyan people making -- >> what's your responsibility to benghazi? that's my question. >> reporter: four americans died

in the attack. state department information officer and air force veteran sean smith, cia officers tyrone woods and glen doherty and ambassador chris stevens who had sent hundreds of requests for more security in benghazi but none to clinton. >> did you ever talk to ambassador stevens when all of this was going on in the hotbed of libya? >> well -- >> that is a yes or no question, madam secretary. i'm sorry. yes or no, please. >> yes, i believe i did. >> we have no record that you had any conversations with the ambassador after you swore him in and before he died, and you were his boss. >> i was the boss of ambassadors in 270 countries. >> reporter: clinton was asked why she went home the night of the attack after it was confirmed the four americans had died. >> okay, and who else was at your home? were you alone? >> i was alone, yes. >> the whole night? >> well, yes, the whole night. >> reporter: it was clinton who

spent the most time talking about the victims of the attack. >> you know, i would imagine i've thought more about what happened than all of you put together. i've lost more sleep than all of you put together. >> reporter: by the end of the day, clinton was losing her voice. >> thanks, congressman. >> reporter: and while praised for keeping her cool the committee's democrats were out of patience. >> i don't want what we want from you. do we want to badger you over and over until you get tired and get the gotcha moment we're talking about. we're better than that. >> reporter: and this was the longest benghazi hearing by far, but the debate over who lost benghazi and the larger question over the policy that toppled gadhafi that's likely to go on throughout the 2016 campaign. carson and savannah? >> all right, andrea mitchell in washington. thank you very much. in the race for the republican nomination ben carson now has pushed past donald trump in the battleground state of iowa according to one poll. nbc's hallie jackson has that story.

>> reporter: good morning, carson. the new poll shows ben carson nine points ahead of donald trump in iowa, the second time in as many days we've seen results like this. it's a dominant position for carson. an unconventional candidate who is still using a very traditional way to try and reach voters, tv ads, and this morning we have an exclusive look at those spots which begin airing today. ben carson now hoping the timing is right for people to start tuning in. his campaign out with this first ads today seen here for the first time. >> of, for and by the people. >> reporter: one, all about uplift, the other a smack-down. >> washington is broken. the political class broke it. together we can drain the swamp. >> reporter: carson buying half a million dollars of ad states in the first four primary states airing earlier than most candidates hoping to capitalize on most candidates as he beats trumpet in iowa in some new polls.

trump saying in a radio interview saying i was very, very surprised to see it because i think we're doing well in iowa. trump's tempered tone coming after a tirade on twitter. his account re-tweeting someone implying iowa voters must have issues in the brain for supporting carson. hours later the billionaire's team backtracked by blaming an intern for the re-tweet saying the young staffer apologizes as his campaign raced to smooth ruffled feathers saying mr. trump loves the people of iowa. he's still the front-runner nationally and still in a kind of political bromance with his main rival. >> i think he's a nice person. >> reporter: and while trump and ted cruz have had a warm relationship, too, sign that is that may be cooling as cruz hints he may be getting ready to start drawing distinctions with trump. >> there are plenty of policy differences and there may well come a time when we start highlighting those more. >> reporter: for now the spotlight is on the top two, the stage set for a showdown at next week's debate. >> i've been attacked since i got in this thing. it's nothing new. the only question is will there

be ten attacks a day or 15? >> reporter: so we talked about that trump tweet guys. this is actually the third time that this campaign cycle that trump has blamed a staffer or intern for re-tweeting something controversial, and overnight a new twist, this one about money. trump announcing he's asked the super pacs supporting him to stop doing so. and to reimburse the money they've collected from donors. this looks like an attempt to head off some questions about a "washington post" investigation into one of his super pacs. but it's still an unusual move, savannah and carson, and i wouldn't be surprised to hear trump talk about it at his rally tonight in raleigh. >> not often a politician says i don't want the money. let's turn to nicolle wallace, msnbc analyst and former white house communications director for president george w. bush and steve kornacki, msnbc host and political correspondent. good morning, guys. >> good morning. >> i know we were all rapt watching 11 hours of testimony yesterday. this is the climatic moment, nicole, what the republicans on that committee have been waiting

for. she was fairly unflappable in contrast to the last time she testified where she got very angry and said what difference does it make, so bottom line, did the republicans lay a glove on her. >> well, listen. i think if you take this all in its entirety and i imagine here in august looking at these things on her fall calendar, oh, waiting for joe biden to decide. my first debate next to surgeon bernie sanders. and this benghazi hearing and sort of had a calgon take me away moment. the truth is and what republicans need to process now is she has not only survived all of those pretty big tasks, she's proven herself an incredibly disciplined and incredibly tranquil and formidable presidential candidate. >> as nicole said, this was a benchmark certainly on her calendar in the fall. doing well in the first debate, vp now out of the race. did she do enough in the hearing to get this e-mail issue behind her? >> i think so. and the thing we have to keep in mind here is she walked into this with a slight advantage, because of all the comments by several republicans over the last few weeks that really made

this look like a political inquisition more than a fact-finding venture. so i think in that setting she could go in there and not have one of those moments where she says, what difference does it make. and one thing we're reminded of yesterday in these settings, adversarial settings, a debate, a hearing, something like that, hillary clinton really is quite good. thinking back to the 2008 campaign. she had 25 debates or something against barack obama. i know she lost that race to barack obama, but when you think back to those debates she won just about every one of them. the thing that's always been the problem for her when she has that one moment where she trips up it becomes big and there was no big moment where she tripped up yesterday. >> let's pretend this person exists in the world. they are neutral, they have no preconceived political positions. they wanted to go into this hearing and learn something about benghazi and who was to blame. what do we take away from the hearing? >> that's the thing. the republicans needed to produce some sort of new information, some sort of new revelation, some sort of new way of looking at this that would cost doubt on the role that hillary clinton played. i didn't hear that come out yesterday.

the one problem though that hillary clinton still has i think is while you look at these polls and people say i'm tired of hearing about the e-mails, i think she only did this for convenience, if you ask people do you think she's being honest about the e-mails they still say no. so that issue of honesty still lingers for her. >> savannah, it's important to remember there's still an fbi investigation into her e-mail server and the big accomplishment of trey gowdy's benghazi committee remains that they were the ones that discovered that she conducted all of her official state department business on a home e-mail server. so the fbi is still investigating. and the public, by and large, even people who like and support her, still think she has a squirrelly relationship with the truth. >> we wanted to ask you about ben carson and talk about the republicans for a moment and how he's up in iowa. >> yeah. >> real contender. you know, most other republicans haven't really taken him on. do you think that changes now? >> because he's so darn pleasant. it's pretty hard to attack a guy who is an accomplished neonatal britain surgeon.

he's a figure who is revered in evangelical circles and home schooling circles. people talk about the republican primary as though it's taking place in these two orderly lanes. it is a roller derby and now carson has bounced trump out of number one in iowa, and i can't wait to see how trump responds. >> he's been pretty hands off so far. we'll see if that trend continues. nicolle wallace, steve kornacki, good to have you both here, thank you. >> ben carson will be chuck todd's guest this sunday on "meet the press," and donald trump, of course, will join us monday right here on "today" for our live town hall meeting with new hampshire voters. join that conversation, send your questions using #trumptoday. in the meantime we're learning more about the raid to free isis prisoners in iraq that led to the first u.s. combat death in that country in four years. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in iraq for us this morning. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the u.s. military has identified that delta force commando killed in the raid.

39-year-old joshua wheeler from oklahoma. and he's been described as a hero. nbc news has learned new details this morning about the commando raid that rescued about 70 hostages in iraq. u.s. and allied kurdish forces took off in five helicopters heading to an isis prison on the outskirts of the town of hawija. u.s. officials say the prisoners were about to be executed. mass graves already dug. american forces manned the perimeter. allied kurdish fighters stormed in. but met heavy resistance. and then nbc news has learned one wave of americans followed by a second moved in to help, worried their allies or the hostages would be killed, but isis managed to shoot one american commando described by u.s. officials as selfless and heroic and whose actions saved lives. he was the first american to die

in combat in iraq in four years. and questions are being raised why are so-called advisers now involved in close combat? >> in that support role they are allowed to defend themselves and also to defend partner forces and to protect against the loss of innocent life, and that's what played out in this -- in this particular operation. >> u.s. troops have been here in iraq for months, advising, and assisting in the war on isis. but this time, they were up close, in the battle, and some are questioning whether they will once again be on the front lines. savannah? >> rich engel, thank you very much. >> natalie's here with a scary situation on a college campus overnight. >> that's right. good morning, everyone. a dispute over a dice game led to the deadly shooting of a man on the campus of tennessee state university late thursday night. police in nashville say the victim was not a student, but two others who were wounded in

the shooting are students. officials say they have non-life-threatening injuries. police are still searching for a suspect. another budget showdown brewing in congress as president obama took the first shot vetoing a sweeping $612 billion defense policy bill. the president signed the veto in the oval office on thursday. the bill had pass the the house and the senate earlier this month. obama accused republicans of resorting to gimmicks and prohibiting changes needed to address modern security threats. congressional republicans called the president's veto reckless, cynical and downright dangerous. the veto forces congress to revise the bill or try to settle a larger budget dispute. it is official. wisconsin republican paul ryan is running for speaker of the house, a job he's virtually assured of getting. ryan had said that he would only run if republicans united behind him to avoid constant leadership battles, and by the end of the day thursday he had won the support of conservative and moderate factions. ryan said it's now time to move

forward as one team. the full house votes for speaker next thursday. we're getting a closer look this morning at a sophisticated drug tunnel discovered along the u.s.-mexico border in california. homeland security officials raided this tunnel on thursday. they found ten tons of marijuana inside. some rooms were filled nearly to the ceiling with drugs. 16 people have been detained after officials surprised workers underground. the tunnel entrance was reportedly hidden inside a fake carpet store south of san diego. and we're getting this amazing bird's eye view which gives us a unique perspective of the world's biggest passenger plane, a camera crew in a helicopter was flying directly over an emirates a-380 plane in the skies over dubai. one expert estimates the two aircrafts only about 150 feet apart, but this close call was actually planned. the stunt was part of a promotional campaign for the airlines. still, that a-380 has four

right. our hearts just kind of hit the floor at that point, and we got the news. >> her right ventricle wasn't big enough to do all the work of the right side. it's a journey. it's a difficult journey and a lot of circumstances. >> reporter: in the fall of 2014, primrose galloway underwent two open heart surgeries in her first three days of life. in the midst of her daughter's hospital state brent galloway was surprised to sea his favorite nfl player for a checkup. don't talk to him, just walk, keep going, and i was like you know what, he's just another dad going through something familiar. >> heart families and cardiac families and cardiac babies there's a special connection. >> reporter: olsen's son t.j. was born one year earlier than primrose in the same hospital with a similar heart defect. the dads became a support system and later that season both

families had reason to celebrate. >> it is a perfect day for football. crowd settling into their chairs. >> she was doing better so we could feel better about ourselves leaving her for a short time. the emotions that i had during the game like actually getting to watch it live, it was indescribable. i can't really describe it, and i actually had you on my fantasy football team. it's going to be a good day. >> reporter: it was the first time the galloways had left the hospital since primrose was born. it was a special day for the the olsens as well. >> not only your first game and your first step towards normalcy of getting out of hospital and primrose was getting better, that was the first game we were able to bring t.j. the wait game ended, scoring the winning touchdown. >> oh, my goodness! >> incredible theater at bank of america stadium today. >> and then i got interviewed after the game and i'll never forget it. usually do a good job of controlling my emotions. it just kind of all came out

never had her e-mails before. that's why they went back in on this. >> without the committee we never would have known about the private server and give her an opportunity to explain it and the questions that arose. the hearing was legitimate but i don't think it turned out way republicans wanted it to. >> much like the primaries, the idea of ben carson now has surge the past donald trump in a new "des moines register"/bloomberg poll. >> the pundits explain this and this is a fluid game even though there's been 100 days of trump at top of the poll, by all accounts it was predict that had someone would leapfrog him, whether it would be ben carson i think is a surprise because when you look at -- talk about ying and yang, low-key ben carson, very measured in the way he speaks and then there's donald trump who is holding his first rally in florida today. >> yeah. >> that is the showman of all showmen. >> and does he start to take on ben carson now which is going to be interesting pause he's such a temperate measured calm guy. you know, what's going to happen

>> she's unbreakable but her cell phone connection is a little breakable right now. >> i'm going because we've got a really serious situation in the weather. hurricane patricia, this thing is nowled strongest hurricane ever recorded the way if looks right now. it is going to be -- it's a category 5 storm. it is currently 235 miles southwest of the manzillo, texas, 200-mile-per-hour winds, and pacific coast of mexico has never had a category 5 storm hit. it looks like sometime friday late afternoon today into the evening hours. it weakens quickly but other thing is we have to watch this. catastrophic storm surge expected. upwards of 20 inches of rain expected out of this thing and that moisture is going to stream um through mexico into texas. a dangerous situation involving over this weekend. flash flood watches into early next week and looking at coastal flood watches as well.

strong rip currents and rainfall amounts as we move through today, about five inches around waco and move into tomorrow. that rain starts to spread into western louisiana and give significant flooding from houston, austin, corpus christi, six inches on sunday and as you move into the coast of louisiana, look at totals over the next five days. 12 inches or more and this heavy rain next week moves into the ohio river valley and mississippi river valleys as well. talking about this weather situation for at least the next seven good friday morning to you. i'm anthony slaughter. waking up to some sunshine in san francisco. we had a thin veil of fog still out over the open water. but otherwise a pew high thin passing clouds will make it feel like fall. temperatures back into the low 70s for the coastline. inner day 70s, inland valleys back in to the low 80s.

this morning on "today food can the "we're savoring the fall hart vest with some of our favorite dishes, one of mine is crispy apple cobbler, perfect dessert for the cool weather and like to add a special spice to kick it up even more. do you have any idea what the special spice is? >> all spice but here we go. apple, sugar, four spices, apple

butter, flour, sugar and salt. take any apples that you pick. i like tarter apples like granny smith or something like that. you're going to core it and chop it up into chunks, three-quarter inch chunks. i don't even peel it because i like it nice and -- adds a little something to it. what you're going to do is take your sugar and your four spices, cinnamon, all spice, ground ginger and chinese five spice. >> that's your secret ingredient. >> that's my secret ingredient and the toss the apples with it and melt some butter in a pan and let them cook on a medium heat for about ten minutes. you stir them occasionally and cover them up and you do that. now you're going to make your topping, a bunch of butter, cut it up, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, all spice and salt and pour that all in. >> okay. >> and put your butter in, and you're going to make it nice and crumbly. >> your butter has to be room temperature. >> should be, okay. >> gets your hands in. it will make that topping that
