"today in the bay" starts right now. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get you the forecast right now for this monday morning. kari's got a look at it. >> you can see the dense fog, especially in the north bay as well as san francisco and our temperatures are in the low 50s. highs in the 70s and low 80s. a lot more sunshine. we're getting ready for some rain for the middle of the week. i'll detail that coming up. let's check in now with mike, giving us a look at the bay bridge. >> we're looking at the toll plaza, where we just have some folks on the left pausing. one of those lanes is not open. it was in the span at treasure island where we were worried, it turns out there was a table in the roadway.

was, just cleared in a report. we see one patch of fog over here along the coast. the other patch of fog in livermore has cleared. we'll check that live camera coming up. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. now to break news. a devastating morning in the mountains of northern afghanistan. a 7.5 earthquake rocking the entire region. 12 girls are the first victims that we know of. sadly, we know more children are injured and they're not the only victims. >> the numbers are changing as we speak. it's a quickly changing situation. how many are we up to now? >> you mentioned the 12 schoolgirls who died. they and all of the other students were in class when that quake struck and it was just 9:00 in the morning. so they were altogether 40 other children were also rushed to the hospital. here's where it happened. this is northern afghanistan. 150 miles north of the afghan

capital of kabul. here is a picture of folks milling about on the streets after this happened. we have images outside a university in pakistan. the quake was deadly there in pakistan as well. early reports from that country are that 29 people died in the quake and the early pictures of the damage really do not tell the full story of this quake. we have an nbc news reporter who works in lahore, pakistan. he's saying the tremors lasted over a minute, and by halfway through, the hotel lobby was a scene of chaos. women and children were screaming. we are working to talk with him by skype, but as you imagine, communication is very differently right now. we do have more images of reports from the quake zone that are starting to roll in. we know this is an important story not only because we live in earthquake country, but because we have a large afghan population in fremont. so perhaps a lot of connections

as well. we'll gather more information and be back with you in just a half-hour. >> we'll be checking back in with you soon. we're also staying on top of the story throughout the morning, both on air and online. you can always head to nbcbayarea.com for the latest. an update, breaking news where crews are still battling a brush fire in south san jose. we know the fire is contained, but it's not under control. it's burning near santa kree is a -- santa teresa boulevard. it broke out about two hours ago. cal fire is helping out with six engines and a dozer. we're told that no homes are threatened at this point, we have a crew on their way and we'll keep you updated as soon as they arrive on scene. >> new video of a quick-punch break-in. a man walks up, quickly shatters the glass door. police say he made off with nearly $2,500 worth of computers and other devices. happened back on other 6th at an

office on harrison between 2nd and 3rd streets in san francisco. the man is believed to be about 5'10". the sweatshirt may have the word gold across the front. if you know who he is, call san francisco police. new details now on a hazmat situation at a north bay supermarket over the weekend. scary moments on sunday unfolded at the harvest market on stamina rin drive yesterday, forcing has mad crews to rush iin. investigators are revealing what sort of stinky contents were in that bag. >> that's right, sam. turns out there was human waste in that bag. at least in part. there were other substances as well. the marin independent journal says those were paint and rubbing alcohol. investigators responding after five hours after a man walked into the harvest market with a

bag. it exploded and splashed. there is some information that he may be a disgruntled customer. >> i don't have all those details. i did hear something about a person that has had a bad experience within the last few days. working with the police department. they are actively investigating it. >> police had to evacuate employees and many customers for safety precautions as the hazmat team started to run tests conducting a five-step process to determine exactly what was involved in all of this. they're hoping more witnesses will come forward to help track him down. i did speak with an employee. he says everything is back to normal. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." a man steals a police suv, leads officers on a chase. now we're learning several different agencies are launching an investigation. how it all happened. it started saturday morning in

the marina district. police say that's where a man jumped into a running patrol car and drove off. that man hit several cars during his getaway but eventually crashed on treasure island. that's when police caught up with him. no one was hit. the san francisco police department is looking into the incident along with the district attorney's office and the san francisco's office of citizens complaints. >> nearly 36 hours later and the search continues for two suspects who shot an assault rifle in livermore. they're also murder suspects. bob redell joining us live there now. authorities are running one of them, armed and dangerous still. >> reporter: police have identified one of the men accused of shooting and killing another man in a parked car outside the cvs. police are on the lookout for this man right here you can see in this photo, 18-year-old jason brown, who incidentally is also

wanted for another murder in fresno. police thought they had brown cornered at one point. this was yesterday morning. a swat team surrounded and stormed brown's family home in west oakland. brown's car was there. but not brown himself. brown and another man alleged used a high-powered rifle, possibly a military style assault rifle to shoot two men in a parked car outside the cvs pharmacy here at the arcade shopping center. this happening just after 6:00 saturday night. it was a busy time. the driver of the car died. the passenger is seriously injured. both the victims are in their 20s, reportedly from the central valley in an area north of tracy. chp did chase brown and his accomplice as they sped off in a bmw on 580, but officers lost him in oakland. he's also wanted for the murder of a 27-year-old man who was shot and killed in central fresno. reporting live in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> thank you, bob. want to get a check of the forecast for this monday morning. what are we in store for, kari? >> it will be another comfortable afternoon with highs mostly in the 70s. after starting out in the mid 50s in livermore, a cool morning and 62 degrees now in oakland. in napa, it's 51 degrees. we have to deal with patchy, dense fog. after that clears out, we'll have more sunshine today, a high of 77 in san jose. palo alto, 75. the mission district today at 71 degrees. 80 in santa rosa. brentwood 81. pleasanton today reaching 82 degrees. we'll take a look at all the microclimates, plus a chance of rain for the middle of the week. that's coming up in just a few minutes. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. >> we're going to start with our live camera in dublin. you can't make out the eastbound taillights. there's obviously some cloud cover right here at the level of the camera. we'll show you the map. the reason we distinguish between the camera level and the road level is road weather index. registering through the area.

clinton's last visit here was about a month ago. this fundraising reception in saratoga was just one of her stops here. her latest visit will also be a campaign cash boost. clinton's first stop is going to be a week from this wednesday at a home in los altos. the next night she's part of another fundraising event at whole wines in napa. >> i don't know how much she has to go to the movies, but the steve jobs movie bombed at the box office this weekend. >> this was the first weekend that biopic played everywhere across the country and it had all the success of a newton. >> apparently the movie makers misread the writing on the wall. people do not want to see a steve jobs movie. the director was topnotch. the script writer, one of the most famous in hollywood. the movie came in fourth place in its first weekend in general release. now, the previous steve jobs movie, the one with ashton kutcher, didn't do well either. so people just don't want to see a steve jobs movie. mark zuckerberg spent the weekend in china, where once again he wowed the crowd by speaking mandarin.

the nasdaq surging 112 to 5031. last weekend, one-hour delivery to certain zip codes in san francisco and san jose. now there's an app for that. it's called prime now. they've offering halloween items. i think that looks like kris sanchez's dog, by the way. because we really need a pet costume right now. amazon will deliver in an hour for an $8 charge if you're a prime member. free again if you are a prime member. >> that's cool. >> it's fun. >> it's nice to be able -- particularly with food items. like you're short on olives. >> i'm hungry now. >> you can have that there in one hour. that really does fit a niche. >> that is good to know. he still hasn't handed over his phone, if you haven't noticed. >> maybe you should get him to ship a sweater or something this morning. >> an umbrella. >> yes. i'm so excited.

but unfortunately, we're not going to get as much rain as we could have. i'll explain in a sechblgd leon. let's get a look at what's happening in san francisco. some clouds this morning, but you can see the visibility is nice and clear there. that may not be the case everywhere, especially in the north bay. we've had some patchy, dense fog. also settling into parts of the tri-valley, too. so now with our temperatures in the low 50s, let's go hour by hour in oakland. at 7:00, we're at 55 degrees, and then 57. you still see those clouds throughout the morning. as you head out for lunch, you should see some bright sunshine and temperatures warming up into the low 70s. we'll be at 73 degrees at 4:00 and a light wind. a look at all the microclimates. in gilroy, up to 83 degrees. 79 in oakland, and 74 rather in oakland, but 79 in napa. livermore today up to 83

degrees. our next storm system is this large cold front that is continuing to move across the pacific. and as it moves closer, looks like we'll see an increase in clouds heading into tomorrow. today after the morning clouds roll out of here, we will have some sunshine. you can see those clouds in here by tomorrow afternoon. and then the chance of rain moving in as we head into early wednesday. looks like by wednesday afternoon, all of that rain is gone. and we were looking at tropical storm olaf in the pacific as a possibility of bringing more rain. now it continues to weaken, and then it just kind of dies to the south, and this thing just fizzles out. unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be able to tap into that tropical system to bring us more rain, but at least we could get about a quarter of an inch and a tenth of an inch in san jose. once again that will be on wednesday. let's check in now with mike to see what's happening on the roads. >> first of all, kari, we're happy to hear the hurricane turned out to be -- for olaf.

expected to face. a saratoga woman is fighting for her life after a fiery head-on car crash that killed five people. the crash happened saturday night on highway 120, which links the bay area to yosemite national park. the chp says this is one of the worst crashes officers have responded to in years. a mercedes suv slammed head-on into a nissan maxima, killing five people. investigators say because the victims were so badly burned, they must rely on dental records to identify them. the chp says this was one of the only survivors of the crash. she is now in critical condition at the hospital. she is a saratoga mother of three. neighbors say she's a great person to be around. >> she's very sweet and seemed like the organizer of the family. and also the gardener. >> investigators have not figured out which vehicle crossed over the double yellow line causing the crash.

region. that was near the epicenter in the hindu region of far northern afghanistan. about 150 miles north of the capital city of kabul. here's video from the streets of pakistan shortly after the quake. back to the east, of course. you can see people milling about in the streets, bracing for aftershocks. the quake has claimed the lives of nearly 50 people, both in pakistan and afghanistan. and the early pictures of the damage certainly do not tell the full story of this quake. nbc news producer working in pakistan described it this way. the tremors lasted over a minute. by halfway through, the hotel lobby was a scene of chaos, people were running out. women and children were screaming. we are working to talk with the producer via skype, but as you might imagine, communications very careful. we are getting more reports and images from the quake zone. we are combing social media as well. it's an important story.

fremont is the second-largest afghan population in the u.s., so there could potentially be some familial collections here. >> i'm sure a lot of folks trying to get in touch with their family members. we are going to stay on top of this story throughout the morning both on air and online. new details on a pretty frightening incident. has crews rushed into the harvest market on san marin drive yesterday. after a man threw a bag of hazardous material at the meat counter. stephanie chuang live outside the meat market now. we're learning more about some pretty disturbing details. what investigators say was in that bag. >> not what you want to hear. but hazmat crews responded here. had to conduct some tests and determined that inside that bag was human waste. there was also a chemical odor that was reported with this. the marin independent journal saying it's because the bag also

had paint and rubbing alcohol mixed in. police and fire and the has mad crews responded and this was after 5:00 last night. investigators say a man walked into the market with the bag, threw it at the meat counter where it exploded and splashed. police had to evacuate employees and customers for safety precautions and they are now still looking for that man. >> sounds like there was a disgruntled person of some sort that had come in and thrown against the meat counter. >> hazmat teams had to conduct a five-step process to determine what chemicals and substances were involved. police are investigating this as vandalism and they're still trying to track down that man, they're hoping for more witnesses to come forward. they do have that type of the disgruntled customer in an incident that might have happened a day or so before this happened yesterday. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. happening today as well, three drifters accused in two deadly bay area shootings expected back in court for possible

arraignment. morrison lampley, shawn angald face murder charges. police arrested the three in portland after tracking them down with the car owned by one of the victims. the judge postponed their first arraignment earlier this month so that they could get lawyers. a house party in santa clara turned deadly. a man was shot and killed and now police are searching for the gunman. happened at a house in glade drive not far from lawrence expressway and el camino. officers found the 22-year-old victim in the backyard. he later died. authorities are asking anyone for information with information, or who attended that party or might even have any information about that shooting to call santa clara police. armed and dangerous. that is the description of one of the two suspects accused of shooting an assault rifle off in the middle of a busy shopping center in livermore, killing one person. bob redell live there with more on what authorities are

revealing about that shooting and the immediacy of the situation. >> police believe the man suspected in the murder outside this cvs pharmacy has killed before. law enforcement is on the lookout for 18-year-old jason brown, who incidentally is wanted for the murder of a 27-year-old man last month at a restaurant in fresno. here in livermore just after 6:00 saturday night, brown and his accomplice allegedly used a high-powered rifle, possibly a military style assault rifle to shoot who men who were in a parked car outside the cvs at the arcade shopping center. the driver died. the passenger was seriously hurt. the suspects fled in a bmw. chp gave chase, but lost them in oakland. yesterday morning, going into sunday morning, law enforcement spotted brown's car outside his family's home in west oakland. swat stormed the house, but no

sign of brown. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> let's hope they find him. thank you very much, bob. it's 5:35 right now. a bizarre scene unfolded at an east bay fire station. a ferrari rolled itself away after bursting into flames. take a look at the fire that happened at the gas station in martinez last night. the ferrari engulfed in flames. the driver says he was filling up the tank when he saw a spark from the engine. he grabbed the fire extinguisher, tried to put out the fire. he describes what happened next. >> and then luckily, i had it in gear, but i think the car got hot enough that it must have popped something in place and the car ended up rolling into the street. thank god. you can see, it had been an ugly scene. >> it just rolled away and away from the gas station. firefighters put those flames out and luckily no one was hurt. >> now to a developing story. five people have died. another person still missing this morning after a whale watching boat sank off the coast

of canada. the latest video from the scene shows emergency crews at the dock. they are trying to find that last person by air and by sea. 21 people were rescued out of the 27 that were onboard. search crews are using boats and helicopters to search for that last missing person who could be in the waters. that's about a six-hour drive from vancouver. here's a photo of the boat from the company's website. the company says the 65-foot boat can fit 46 people. the president of ireland is in the bay area this morning, still at the beginning of a four-day visit that includes a stop in berkley. yesterday president michael higgins appeared at a reception in wood side where he met with members of the irish community. his appearance comes a few months after six irish students died in the tragic balcony collapse. on wednesday, higgins will meet with berkley's mayor and first responders. he'll plant a tree in berkley to honor the students who died. >> i think we're going to see a

deepening of the relationship between ireland and berkley. and through our facilitation of maybe better run deep er relationship. >> higgins will also talk about issues including poverty and global hunger. separately, he'll also be meeting with governor brown. here's a look at some of the other stops on president higgins' agenda. today he's speaking to berkley students about poverty and hunger, as you mentioned. then he's going to visit the bancroft library. president higgins comes down to san jose. he'll meet with city leaders at city hall. on wednesday, he'll meet with first responders, medical staff and volunteers who helped out during the balcony collapse. it appears that most of the events are private. right now, it is 5:38. let's see what kind of weather will greet all of us this morning. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we're looking forward to a beautiful afternoon. but this morning, it's cool and we have to deal with some patchy dense fog in some spots. it's 54 degrees in livermore.

the real twitter will report its profits tomorrow. >> scott mcgrew will hear from its real ceo. >> yeah, jack dorsey no longer the interim ceo. he'll speak to analysts and reporters tuesday about twitter's business prospects. it's a busy week for company reports. we care about these not just because we see financials, but because the companies tend to save up big news. twitter and apple on tuesday. paypal will report wednesday. this will be the first time it reports profits. an independent company independent of e-bay. the company previously known as google popped friday after the company said it would spend five billion dollars to buy back its own stock. it trades as goog. when the companies buy back shares, it makes all the other shares worth more. there are fewer pieces of the pie. the san francisco and silicon valley community continue to do more, but we are seeing  headwinds in certain sectors of

our frosty economy. caterpillar disappointed investors. you can safely assume there's less construction out there. there may be a congressional hearing in the controversy between the american egg board and san francisco's hampton creek, which makes just mayo an eggless mayonnaise. the head of the egg board that markets eggs was forced to resign last month after e-mails were linked which seemed to show she was trying to pressure stores not to stock eggless mayo. and remember this guy? he's the fellow who brougought drug company, raised the price of a pill by 5,000%? he did an ask me anything on reddit, one of those question and answer things over the weekend. he was asked, what have you learned professionally and personally from this media incident? he answered personally, this is the best way to get girls professionally. i had no idea you could get

girls professionally. i've been doing it as an amateur for years. [ laughter ] >> how has that worked out for you? >> amateurishly. >> who is running his p.r. campaign? >> he is. >> he's doing a terrible job of it. >> it is 5:48 right now. san jose making moves to clean up its trash. city leaders are looking at fining anyone caught illegally dumping stuff on property where it doesn't belong. council members will consider it during their meeting tomorrow. if you're caught the first time, it will cost you a thousand dollars. second time, $1,500. the third time, you'll be fined $3,000. >> i would say that will cost you a lot. >> happening today, work beginning on beautifying an east bay park. crews are going to break ground on the $3.5 million renovation of the park in san leandro. residents are invited to attend and the makeover is going to eventually include new play structures, barbecues, restrooms

and much more. the city expects to complete that project sometime next summer. >> unusually high tides will have an impact on some commuters. the sheriff says all week the lower half of the park and ride lot will be closed along highway 1 in mill valley. some nearby street parking will also be off-limits. damage caused in that same area last year, so they are just getting prepared. we are getting prepared for some rain later in the week, as we were talking about the fact we might have seen precipitation from hurricane olaf. it's not quite working out. >> no, it's not working out for us. but we are expecting some rain. >> let it go. >> a "frozen" reference there. so we'll talk about that rain chance. mike will keep you updated on the commute. we do have some fog this morning. let's take a live look outside as we see the bay bridge. no fog there, but low clouds. low clouds will clear out

gradually as we go through the day. and it will be comfortable. we're in for a great way to start out the week. what makes it even greater is we know there could be some rain by wednesday. a look at the current temperatures. 57 degrees in san jose. 53 degrees in napa. and 54 degrees in livermore. a lot of clouds cfoicovering thy area. reducing the visibility as you drive to work. and we will still see the clouds and the fog near the immediate coastline, but the rest of us clearing out this afternoon as temperatures warm up. maybe a degree or two warmer than yesterday. but yesterday was so nice. and we keep those temperatures. we will see a few more clouds later on tonight. a look at the forecast hour by hour in san jose. at 7:00, it is 57 degrees. we stay in the 50s for a few hours. the sun breaks out by 11:00. and then the temperatures warm up. we are still expected to make it into the upper 70s to lower 80s as we go into the south bay. in gilroy, up to 83 degrees. san mateo, 74 degrees.

mission district, a high of 71 degrees. 80 in santa rosa. pleasanton reaching 82 degrees. a lot of sunshine today, but our next storm system is developing farther off to the west, and it will be moving in as we go through the week, bringing us some showers as we go into late tuesday night into early wednesday. the showers passing by the bay area fairly quickly, but could be just enough to bring us maybe a quarter of an inch of rain to the north bay. we'll keep you up to date on that and mike's keeping you up to date on this morning's commute. >> we found some low clouds and fog you were talking about. this is san rafael. you don't clearly see those lights. let's show that same area on the map and our road weather index does show that orange right here. remember, our traffic and our weather systems are tied together, so we take kari's data, translate it to what you might find on the road and that's what you saw. over here, eastbound, getting away from the area, there is a crash that just happened. some folks are slowing westbound for the distraction. we do have the bay bridge

successful run. the vice president also says there was no last-minute plea from his dying son beau to run for president. he said there was never a run for the kipper kind of moment. hillary clinton is planning another trip here to the bay area. if that sounds familiar, that's because your last visit was about a month ago to the bay area. this reception was to saratoga. one of her stops her last time out. her latest visit will be a campaign cash boost. clinton's first stop will be a week from this wednesday. the home in los altos. the next night, she'll be part of another fundraising event at hall wines in napa. president obama believes america's students and schools, for that matter, are being tested from all that testing. later today, the president will meet with educators in an effort to limit all the time students spend taking standardized tests. in a facebook video, he outlined some of the steps he hopes can limit the testing program critics say weigh too much on schools and provide little
