with a little build. no drama. we had slowing for 880 and 680 coming off of that tri-valley. it didn't show up on maps. we do see the glow for the lights. maybe even pleasanton. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. an update to breaking news just hours ago. a massive earthquake rocked north eastern afghanistan. the situation is changing by the minute, and tracking it all is our own kris sanchez. chris, we now know among the dozens killed were 12 young girls who died trying to get out of their school? >> they were at their desks when the 12 school children died. they were trying to get out of the building as the earth was moving beneath them. it was just 9:00 in the morning. 40 other children from that school and the surrounding area were also rushed to the hospital there. here's where it had. we're talking about far northern afghanistan. about 150 miles north of the

capital city of kabul. you can see people milling about in the streets. folks on cell phones trying to make connections with friends and family and loved ones. the quake was deadly in pakistan as well as afghanistan and the death toll is already close to 50. the early pictures of the damage don't really tell the story. some of the walls crumbles there. we've also seen images of cracked walls as well. and one young girl who was at the market with her brother describes how it felt as the clerk told her to get down. >> the cars were moving, and that building, they were shouting from that building as well. and i was so scared. >> a producer said the tremors lasted over a minute by halfway through the hotel lobby was a scene of chaos. people were running out. women and children were screaming. we are still working to talk by

six hours by phone from vancouver. the company says the 65-foot-long boat can fit 46 people and there were 27 onboard. new details on a brush fire in san jose. crews managed to knock it down. they kept it to five acres. this video was just into our newsroom. crews mopping up at the scene. it broke out less than three hours ago near santa kree is a boulevard and bailey avenue. no homes were threatened. a saratoga mother of three is in the hospital this morning with major injuries after a fiery crash killed five others in the sierra foothills. the chp says the crash is one of the worst officers have seen in years. the crash happened saturday night on highway 120. the road that links the bay area to yosemite national park. the chp says the merchandise suv

and a nissan maxima hit head-on. that crash sparked a fire, closing the highway for hours. this woman was the only survivor. because those who died were so badly burned, it will take dental records to identify them. the cause of the crash is under investigation. armed with an assault rifle and on the run, authorities warning the public to be an alert after two suspects shot and killed a man right in the middle of a busy east bay shopping center. bob redell live in livermore this morning. first a homicide there this weekend. now we know one of those suspects is also linked to a killing in fresno. >> that's correct, sam. police have identified one of the suspects who shot and killed another man in his parking lot outside the cvs pharmacy. law enforcement is on the lookout for 18-year-old jason brown, who incidentally is also wanted for another murder in fresno.

police did think they had brown cornered at one point. yesterday morning a swat team surrounded and stormed brown's family. brown's car was there but not brown himself. brown and another man allegedly used a high powered rifle, possibly a military style assault rifle to shoot two men sitting in a parked car at the arcade shopping center in livermore. this was happening just after 6:00 saturday night. a busy time for this area. the driver of the car died. the passenger is seriously injured. both victims in their 20s reportedly from the central valley and an area north of tracy. chp did chase brown and his accomplice as they sped off in a bmw on 580, but officers lost them. brown also wanted for the murder of a 27-year-old man shot and killed last month in central fresno. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." new video to show you this

morning of a quick punch break-in. as you see, a man just walks to that door, shatters it. police say he made off with nearly $2,500 worth of computer and other devices. happened back on october 6th at an office on harrison between 2nd and 3rd streets in san francisco. the man believed to be about 5'10". police say he's wearing a sweatshirt with the word gold across the font. if you know who he is, call san francisco police. it was a chaotic scene in the east bay. that on fire right there is a ferrari. this happened near a gas station in martinez last night. the car's owner says he was filling up his car when he saw a spark from the engine. the ferrari quickly caught fire and grabbed a fire extinguisher. the owner describes what happened next. >> luckily, i had it in gear. i think it got hot enough that it must have popped something in

place and the car ended up rolling into the street. thank god. as you can see, it would have been an ugly scene. >> that ferrari rolled into the gas station and across several lanes of traffic before crashing into the median. firefighters put the flames out. nobody was hurt. >> new details this morning on what was inside a bag. thrown at a meat counter at a bay area grocery store. we now know that bag contained human waste. >> stephanie chuang joining us live from the harvest market. this incident led to a hazmat situation. the store was closed down. >> it was, sam and laura. it was quiet now. an employee saying it's completely back to noon. human waste found inside, as well as a chemical odor. and according to the marin independent journal, that's because the bag also had paint

and rubbing alcohol mixed in. investigators phoning after 5:00 last night after a man walked into the market with the bag, threw it at the counter where it exploded and splashed. police still looking for this man. there is some information that he may be a disgruntled customer. >> i don't have all those details. i did hear something about a person that had a bad experience within the last few days working with the police department. they are actively investigating it. and hazmat crews had to conduct a five-step process to determine what exactly was inside that bag. they were finally able to open the store back up and police are investigating this as a case of vandalism. they're still trying to track down this man and they're hoping that witnesses will step forward so they can find him. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> and the motive behind it. so strange. let us send it over to meteorologist kari hall who is tracking your weather.

gathered for oklahoma state's homecoming parade. the 25-year-old woman faces four counts of second-degree murder. on saturday, police say she drove right into the crowd, killing four, including a 2-year-old boy. nearly 50 others were also injured. hundreds of people gathered on the oklahoma state campus to remember the victims. >> when you experience trauma, you just want to be together. you just want to be next to somebody. just want to be able to voice what you saw, what you heard. and want to try to make sense of it. >> police believe the suspect was driving drunk when that crash happened, but her defense attorney says she wasn't drunk and instead suffers from a mental illness. a man steals an suv from police, leads offices on a chase and crashes on treasure island. now we're learning several different agencies are launching an investigation into how it all happened. it started saturday morning in the marina district. police say that's where a man jumped into a running patrol car and drove off.

that man hit several cars during his getaway, but eventually crashed on treasure island and that's when police caught up with him and made the arrest. two officers fired their guns during the charse, but no one ws hurt or hit. now the police department is looking into the incident along with the district attorney's office and the san francisco office of citizen complaints. it's become a staple of winning in the bay area. we all know that home prices are just going up and up. >> and we all know the tech boom is behind it. but scott mcgrew may be even more specific than that. >> "the wall street journal" asked zillow to run the number on san francisco bay area prices. as you would expect, house prices in san francisco up 14% and up 11% in san jose. but then zillow looked just at homes purchased by apple employees, and it turns out the more apple employees in your neighborhood, the higher the home price is. different than any other

company. homes bought by apple employees rose in price by 18% more than the average. the median price of a home owned by an apple employee in the bay area is $1.1 million. bottom line, if you've been priced out of the housing market, you should shake your fist at apple. if you already own a home, you should bring your neighbors who work at apple some cookies. prices are going up everywhere, but expect a lot of growth, particularly in the south bay. you have a new apple campus going in, and a new google campus, both under construction down here. despite all the buses moving between san francisco and mountain view, google actually says a majority of its employees live south of its headquarters. speaking of apple, the new apple tv goes on sale today for delivery later this week. it's more expensive than the old apple tv box, but the thing that may be more exciting is all these new apps that we will see that may do things you've never seen before. the developers only just got the

software for the box, so give them some time to make this cool. this past weekend was the first weekend where the new steve jobs movie was in wide release, not just in select theaters, and it bombed. it came in fourth place. the previous steve jobs movie, the one with ashton kutcher, didn't do very well either. i saw it. i give it about a 6 maybe. i also saw "bridge of spies." amazing. wonderful. >> that's the tom hanks one, right? >> yes, and steven spielberg directing. fantastic. >> we're going to change your title to business, tech, and movie critic. >> that would be awesome. >> here's something to think about as you head to work. gas prices across the u.s. fell for the 19th week in a row. prices at the pump dropped another dime this week. they're 84 cents lower than last year, and 63 cents lower than in mid june. i almost don't want to jinks it, telling the story.

plus, american refineries slash their wholesale gas prices. the average price for gas in san francisco, $2.92 a gallon. you'll pay about the same a gallon of gas in san jose if you don't find it lower. i've seen it for $2.60 something. >> some of my family in kentucky got gas for $1.89. >> wow. >> we're celebrating $2.80 and it's like twice the rest of the country. living in the bay area. >> it's all right. it's all good. and our weather is -- >> we pay for it. >> we can't complain about. it will be a beautiful day. as we take a live look at the bay bridge, some low clouds starting to kind of shroud the top of the bridge, but at least for now, there, it's not affecting your visibility, but it could, especially in the north bay. we've also seen it in the peninsula, so mike will keep you up to date on that and how it affects the morning commute. a look at the microclimates now,

getting a close look at the south bay. 55 in gilroy. in the north bay, it's 49 degrees and 57 in san francisco and the peninsula. we'll be up to 60 degrees at 9:00. still those clouds hanging around. and as the sun comes out, we'll get those temperatures warming up and we'll be in the low 70s today, and the more clouds moving in tonight. some mist and drizzle possible, too. as we get a look at all the microclimates, in san jose, a high of 77. in palo alto, expect it up to 75 degrees. mostly 70s and low 80s in here also. especially in the tri-valley, up to 82 degrees in pleasanton, and oakland a high of 74 degrees. we're watching the next storm system and our next chance of rain. it's well-off to the west right now, but we'll be moving into the bay area heading into the middle of the week. that will bring our temperatures down a couple of degrees. the scattered showers moving in

between late tuesday night and early wednesday. we'll keep you up to date on that. we were hoping that this could tap into the tropical moisture from olaf. now wind speeds at 70 miles per hour. just kind of drops it off the map as it weakens. i don't think we'll be able to get some additional rain from that, but it does look like it should see showers. measurable rain out of this on monday. maybe a quarter of an inch from the north bay. we'll keep you up to date on that. after that, we head into the weekend that will be nice and comfortable, just in time for halloween. we're talking 70s and 80s all across the bay. let's see how that fog is slowing down your commute with mike. >> we'll definitely translate that on to our road weather index. i do want to show you this live look-in. you also see the traffic building. as we take a look at your map. i don't want you to be surprised. that bridge is closing today at

morning - after slamming into a hillside at a popular south bay park. ==vo== this happened yesterday at "ed levin" park in milpitas. a paraglider is recovering. it happened yesterday in milpitas. park officials say the woman, who is an experienced paraglider had just launched when something went wrong and she lost control. she slammed into the hillside, breaking both of her ankles and hurting her hips.

many say they're well aware of the risks. >> quite honestly, you have a greater risk of being in a car accident on the way to a hang gliding site than you do while flying in the sky. >> they typically respond to five or six rescues a year. >> that will take your breath away right there. a new call from america's leading doctors to snuff out the use of e-cigarettes among minors. the american academy of pediatrics issuing new recommendations to raise the age to 21 for purchasing all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. the group also urges fda regulation of online e-cigarette sales and new hikes in tobacco product prices. e-cigarette use is up threefold among minors just since 2013. happening today, work beginning on beautifying an east bay park. crews are going to break ground on the $3.5 million renovation of the park in san leandro.

in relief or help connect with loved ones become home. >> no doubt, so many people are very upset over this. another update coming up in just 20 minutes. we're also continuously updating our website and our bay area app. >> in a little more than two hours, the three drifters accused in two deadly bay area shootings are expected back in court for possible arraignment. these three all face murder charges in the shooting death of a hiker in fairfax and a backpacker found dead in golden gate park. police arrested all three in portland after tracking him down with a car owned by one of the victims. the judge postponed their first arraignment earlier this month so that they could get representation. a house party in santa clara turned deadly. a man was shot and killed and police are searching for the gunman. it happened at a house on glade drive in santa clara, not far from lawrence expressway in el camino. officers found a 22-year-old

possible lead. they're still trying to look for that man. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> and to know why he did it. the president of ireland is in the bay area this morning. still at the beginning of a four-day visit that includes a stop in berkley. yesterday, president michael higgins appeared in a reception in wood side, where he met with members of the irish community. it comes a few months after six irish students died in that tragic balcony collapse in berkley. on wednesday, higgins will meet with berkley's mayor and first responders, he'll plant a tree in berkley to honor students who died. >> i think we're as well going to see a deepening of the relationship between ireland and berkley. through our facilitation of maybe better run deeper relationship, with the irish interests. >> higgins will also visit with cal students to talk about poverty and global hunger. separately, he'll also be meeting with governor brown.

here's a look at some of the other stops on president higgins' agenda today. he's speaking to those students in berkley and visit the bancroft library. on tuesday, he's coming down to san jose meeting with city leaders in city hall. wednesday, he'll then meet with first responders, medical staff, and volunteers, who help during the balcony collapse in berkley. it appears most of the events are actually private. developing right now, parts of the gulf coast getting pounded from the same storm that was once hurricane patricia. here's a look at live satellite radar. you can see everything developing in the gulf coast there. up to four inches of rain may fall today in parts of mississippi and alabama, and tornados are also a possibility. it played havoc on roads throughout the southwest, leaving streets submerged and cancelling flights at dallas-ft. worth airport. cleanup continuing in mexico, but it's mixed with some relief

there. hurricane patricia was considered one of the strongest storms, if not the strongest on record. fortunately, it did not match expectations in terms of the damage it left behind. it still believed that no one died in mexico. and the brunt of that damage impacted mexico's more remote region. >> good thing it wasn't as bad as anticipated. >> nothing like that in our neck of the woods. a little bit of rain in the forecast. >> we are looking forward to some rain for the middle of the week. today, we still are going to keep it dry. it's now 52 degrees in livermore. 57 in sunnyvale and san jose as well as san francisco. visibility is low in a few spots, especially in the north bay, where it's down to a quarter of a mile in santa rosa. in napa, half a mile visibility, so you really need to slow down and use the low beam headlights today. and seven-mile visibility in san jose. so it's looking a little bit better there and we'll see the highs today reaching 77 degrees in san jose. 75 in palo alto.

today it's 71 degrees. 75 in belvedere and livermore. the rest of the tri-valley in the low 80s. >> we'll start in san jose. our camera here at 101 and 680. visibility is okay in the area. it's the problem here for the jam. because of a crash in part, we'll look at your map. in part, we have some slowing because of the crash that has cleared from the roadway to the off ramp, which is still a distraction for the northbound commute. we also have traffic jamming up around capital expressway. the rest of your northbound routes starting to build pretty nicely and smoothly up through san jose and moving up toward the rest of the silicon valley. 880 slows down to a crash at thornton, which is moving to the shoulder. over here, the tri-valley shows some fog. that's the orange for livermore. and over on the coast, highway 1. also, the north bay with some

bay, visibility goes down drastically. our temperatures are cool, stepping out the door in the north bay, it's 48 degrees and 55 in san francisco. a close look at the south bay now. downtown san jose, it's 59 degrees. in san martin, it's 51 degrees. so cool to start out the day, but it will be warming up nicely. let's go hour by hour in oakland. at 8:00, we're at 60 degrees. you still see those clouds. as you go through late morning, the sun starts to break out at lunchtime. it's very comfortable. it's 68 degrees. warming up into the low 70s today. and light wind coming in from the west. our highs today reaching into the mid 70s. we'll have some upper 70s in los ga toes. san mateo, 74 degrees. mission district reaching 71. we're getting ready for this next storm system. our next chance of rain is well to the west of us.

you see those clouds covering the bay area. and then the rain begins late tuesday night into early wednesday. models are really having a hard time handling this one, but i do think we will at least for a little while have some widespread rain all across the bay area. originally, we were hoping that we could tap into this tropical system. it now has wind speeds at 70 miles an hour, and then look at this thing just fizzling it out. it takes a dive to the south. i don't think we'll be able to get some additional rain from that. but the cold front itself will bring at least a quarter of an inch of rain to the north bay and the rest of us seeing about a tenth of an inch of rain. after seeing some midweek rain this weekend it's looking nice. we're all planning for halloween. it will be in the 70s and low 80s. looks like we'll have a great weekend for all of those outdoor activities. let's send it to mike to see what's happening now as you head out for that morning commute. >> you showed the golden gate

bridge. sudden slowing. no crashes reported in the last couple of seconds. i don't see anything, but i'll double check. it registers as an orange highlighting. san rafael. highway 37 coming over from vallejo is a concern here. highway 4 and concord are where we've seen the big slowdown for that portion of the bay. the east shore freeway as they jump back and forth between the slower spots. this is a typical pattern. there's 880. there's 680. you may see patchy fog as well. that might be why we're seeing a slower pattern here. the northbound routes do slow down. maybe a later build just kicking in. that is slowing right here heading to the peninsula. there's some patchy fog.

we have new video this morning of a quick punch break-in. as you see from the video, a man walks up and quickly shatters a glass door with his fist. police said he made off with nearly $2,500 worth of computers and other devices. this happened at an office between harrison and 2nd and 3rd streets. police say he's wearing a sweatshirt with the word gold across the front. if you know who he is, please, call san francisco police. fire crews rolled up to a ferrari on fire. it happened in martinez last night. the car's owner says he was fueling up the ferrari when he saw a spark from the engine. the car quickly caught fire. he grabbed a fire extinguisher, tried to put out the flames.

than a hundred people are dead following a major at 6:55, an update to breaking news. we now know more than 100 people are dead following a major earthquake in afghanistan. >> kris sanchez has been following this story since the news broke about five hours ago. where do things stand now? >> we know that 12 schoolgirls died at their school and dozens of their classmates are now in the hospital. the epicenter was in afghanistan about 150 miles north of the capital city of kabul. but more than 100 deaths are reported across asia. the pictures of the damage really do not tell the full story or the extent of this earthquake. some walls did crumble. we saw some walls cracked as well. but again, it was deadly, and one young girl who was at the market with her brother describes how it felt as the clerk told her to get down for safety. >> the car was moving, and that

building, they came shouting from that building as well. i was so scared. >> more images and reports are continuing to roll in. we do know that fremont is home to the second largest afghan population in the u.s., so we are checking to see if there are any connections we can help to make there. >> no doubt those folks want to know how their families are doing. thank you, kris. to a developing story. we are hoping to hear more information later this morning about why a whale watching boat sank yesterday in the waters off of vancouver island. five people have died. one person still missing at sea. crews did manage to rescue 21 other passengers and we do know from rescuers, the boat made a may day call late yesterday afternoon. still no word, though, on what might have triggered those events. witnesses do say it was otherwise a clear and sunny day. new details this morning. we now know what was inside a bag tossed in the meat counter. it led to a hazmat answer.

>> if you want to hear an answer, stephanie chuang live at the harvest market this morning. investigators say it was human waste inside the bag. >> reporter: that's right, sam and laura. that's what was determined after a five-step taste. human waste, but also a chemical smell. that's according to the marin independent journal, because there was also rubbing alcohol and paint mixed inside that bag. police and fire and the hazmat crews responding around 5:00 to determine that after a man walked into the harvest market here, and threw a bag at the counter, the meat counter where it exploded and splashed, the market was closed for a couple hours but did reopen around 8:00 last night, and that's according to a store manager i spoke with this morning who also tells me on saturday a man was accused of shoplifting here and kicked out. no arrests were made, but he and police believe there may be a link. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay."
