valley high school in columbia, south carolina. it shows a resource officer confronting a student allegedly disrupting class. he asked her to come with him but after she refuses multiple times, the confrontation escalates. the video shows the officer throwing her to the ground and pulling her across the floor. the officer identified as deputy ben field declined to be interviewed pending an investigation. >> the sheriff fully understands the seriousness of this incident and will address this again once this investigation is completed. >> reporter: according to the sheriff's office, it was only after the student refused to leave the classroom that the officer was called in. on facebook and on twitter, it

was trending with "assault at at the high school." >> the district superintendent released a statement saying, quote, student safety is and always will be the district's top priority. the district will not tolerate any action that jeopardizes the safety of our students. pending the outcome of the investigation, the district has directed that the school resource officer not return to any school in the district. the student who was detained was later released to her parents. we're also learning this morning more about deputy ben fields. now, he and several other officers were sued for excessive force back in 2007, but they won that case. and fields and other school officials are facing another lawsuit brought by a student for a 2013 incident claiming in part that fields unfairly and recklessly targets african-american students with allegations of gang membership and criminal gang activity. fields and the other defendants

deny any wrong doing and they have presented evidence to oppose these allegations. that case still pending, guys, but clearly this is an issue that has been ongoing. >> we were just talking, you see the other students sitting like statues at their desk. it's clear they feared this person or were intimidated. >> their only weapon of choice was to record everything on video. >> let us turn now to the presidential race in a moment. we'll talk exclusively to democratic hopeful senator bernie sanders. but first we've got some new poll numbers on the republican side at the candidates descend on colorado for the next debate. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is there. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning to you. from colorado, we're getting our first look inside the spin room ahead tomorrow night's republican debate. we're number two, that may tbe the new slogan.

donald trump has now fallen behind ben carson. 26% for carson, 22 for trump. donald trump said he believes in polls generally but these ones aren't very scientific. he says, however, they do show a trend. perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from this poll is the fact a majority of republicans say they still haven't made their mind up yet about which republican they will eventually support, nearly a hundred days until the iowa caucus, the first nominating contest. one of the big contests we're going to watch here tomorrow night is between jeb bush and marco rubio. a power point presentation by the bush campaign had one slide that read experience matters. beneath it it says "marco is a gop obama." unclear if it's intended as a compliment or insult. assuming the latter, the bush

campaign compared rubio to obamobam obama. tomorrow night for only the third time the republican will share the stage here in boulder. we'll be watching what all of them do to try to pull away from the pack. >> peter, thanks. you can catch that debate, your money, your vote tomorrow at 8:00 eastern on cnbc. >> and now hillary clinton's campaign enjoys new momentum. her main opponent, bernie sanders, is still nipping at her heels. it's nice to you have here in our studios. >> good to be here. >> a lot of democrats really like you, some of them love you, but if you put your candidacy side by side and ask who is likely to prevail in a general election, would you acknowledge that hillary clinton has a better chance of winning the general? >> absolutely not! if you look at some of the polling of me against donald trump, we do better than hillary

clinton. not in all but in many of them. and the reason for that is the enthusiasm that we are generating, meaning a lot of working class people and young people who have given up on the political process are now coming out and they want a candidate to stand up to the big money interest and create an economy that works for all of us and not just the 1%. so we're generating excitement, big voter turnouts work, i think we are the candidate to do that. >> you are progressive across the board except perhaps on the issue of guns. you've supported some reforms but you also support legal immunity for gun manufacturers. you voted against the brady bill, which calls for background checks and five-day waiting periods. do you think at this stage in this day and age that makes you a tough sell for many mainstream democrats? >> i don't and i'll tell you why, matt. what people don't know is that in 1988 when i first ran for congress, there were three candidates in the race, two of

them were supported by the gun groups, one of them, me, was not. up -- you know why? because i said in 1988 i would vote to ban certain assault weapons. two years later, i kept my word. i have a d-minus rating by the nra. as a candidate coming from the state that has virtually no gun control at all, i think i can do that. >> you've sharpened your rhetoric in the last few days, perhaps not coincidentally as hillary clinton gained some new momentum in this race. one thing you point out is that you more consistently and for a longer term held positions on issues like gay marriage and trade deals. you use the word expedient a lot. let me be direct. do you think hillary clinton holds position when and only because they're politically expedient? >> i'm going to let the voters make that decision, but what i

will say is i have from almost day one in the congress known that our trade policies have been a disaster for american workers. we have lost millions of decent paying jobs -- >> but the subtext is that hillary clinton hasn't picked up that fight where you have. >> well, let me just say this. let me put it in this way. i am delighted that in the last couple of months hillary clinton has come on board positions that i have held for many, many years on trade, on the keystone pipeline. if you're serious about climate change, you never support the transportation of some of the dirtiest fuel on earth. so i'm glad that hillary clinton is moving in my direction. >> let me talk about gridlock. people right now, senator, are so frustrated with washington. president obama has had key elements of his agenda blocked by conservatives in congress. you are to the left of president obama. why will you succeed in getting rid of gridlock where he can't? >> great question. because what we will do is rally the american people, matt, around issues that they support.

people want to see the minimum wage go up, $15 an hour, they want to create millions of job, make -- >> but the president has tried to rally the american people. >> well, i will do it differently. because at the end of the day what people are really upset about is that big money controls what goes on in congress and the only way we change that is when millions of people come forward and demand a government that represents all of us and not just the billionaire class. >> you all of us reaching into our high school textbooks to look up the definition of socialism, democratic socialism. 16% said they were comfortable with capitalism. you say you are not a capitalist. i see signs at your rally that say "join the revolution." what about voters who think a revolution sounds scary? >> our job is to make people aware that programs like social

security, medicare, the national park system, which is a wonderful system are publicly owned programs. and to also make people aware that we are the only major country on earth that doesn't guarantee health care to all people as a right and that we don't have paid family and medical leave, that we do not make public colleges and universities tuition free, as many other countries do. so i think once we get these issues out and talk about creating a government and programs that work for ordinary people rather than just the very wealthy, i think more people will stand whunderstand what we talking about. >> it's nice to have you in new york. come and visit us again. >> thank you very much. >> a tentative budget deal with the white house is aimed at stopping a government shutdown. >> if approved, the agreement would set government funding levels for the next two years and extend the nation's debt limit through 2017. it would be a milestone after

doctors are closely monitoring the conditions of five of them because they're in critical condition. that's one reason that the prosecutors are waiting another two weeks before they bring formal charges because there could be four or five counts of second dree murder. this morning adacia chambers sits in a solitary jail cell on suicide watch. prosecutors said she deliberately drove her crowd into a crowd at the osu home coming parade. a criminal affidavit filed with the court said the 25-year-old, quote, admitted to booking staff that she was suicidal at the time of the incident. her attorney says chambers has a history of mental illness and wants her to undergo a psychological evaluation. the judge setting her bond at $1 million. with formal charges of second degree murder expected in two weeks. her father says he's confused by

morning has ben carson taking the lead over donald trump. peter alexander is in boulder, colorado, where the republicans face off tomorrow in their third debate. peter, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. this is big news on the eve of that republican debate. you just said it, ben carson is now a national front-runner. donald trump dropping to second place for the first time in months. these are the numbers, new national poll showing trump at 22%, but carson at 26% right now. that four point lead within the margin of error and rubio is in third place at 8%. the majority of republicans say that they haven't made their minds up yet. 80% of the people who say they're backing dr. ben carson right now say that they're not really sure who they'll end up supporting. this morning our guest here on "today" was on the democratic side, bernie sanders. he spoke out when asked about hillary clinton and whether she's been changing her positions for political benefit. here's what he said.

her husband joseph carrier allegedly robbed a citizens bank in wilmington, delaware, shortly after noon on monday. the carriers fled the scene in a brown buick encore and were spotted by state police who began to chase them. >> 10-4, all units, 1039. >> speeds are 85, in the left lane. >> reporter: the suspects crashed into several vehicles near philadelphia international airport. where police took them into custody. no one was injured in the crash. authorities say the couple's alleged crimes followed a pattern they have seen at least four times. on september 28th, joseph carrier captured on surveillance video in the same pink shirt. on october 9th, in pennsylvania police got $730 from a bank inside a walmart. three days later in palm coast, florida, $500 from wells fargo. october 16th, an unknown sum taken from a bank in aberdeen, maryland. and while the couple may be

described as a modern day bonnie and clyde, police say this story is far from a romantic crime spree. >> these two individuals are deeply troubled people. serious heroin addiction. it's turned them from the law abiding citizens to multistate bank robbers. >> and police have not stated the chargers pending against the carriers or when and where they'll be a arraigned. a kenyan marathon runner has been arrested on fraud charges after he was said to have cheated at a race on sunday. he hid in the crowd and joined in on the race with just one kilometer to go. his second place finish was worth about $7,000 and race officials got suspicious when the runner crossed the line without even breaking a sweat. yeah. unbelievable. >> you crossed the marathon line. you don't break a sweat, but most mere mortals do. thank you.

now to the new study that have people talking. on monday the world health organization made a bold statement that processed meats cause cancer and that red meat can as well. 1.8 ounces of processed meat a day, two slices of ham for example could raise the risk of colorectal cancer by 18% and 3.5 ounces of red meat could raise the risk by 17%. can we still eat meat? we have a registered dietitian, good morning. what's the bottom line? i mean should people be drastically cutting down on processed and red meat? >> we should be. we should be doing what we were doing last week before this information came out. so this is very important information that we just learned yesterday. however, the recommendations are really going to be what we should have been doing. again, for a long time now.

focusing on whole, real foods as little processed food as possible. limiting the red meat, specifically limiting or taking out altogether our processed meat and focusing on plant based foods. more plant based food. >> when you say processed meat, so everyone understands what is does that refer to? >> anything that's salted, cured, fermented, smoked. so it will be meat that's processed and chemicals added to it to increase the shelf life and the flavor. >> for a lot of people that means the deli sandwich meat they eat every single day. you should not do that? >> you should be limiting deli meats and when you go go to the deli, ask for the fresh turkey. very often your deli counter has fresh turkey available. then look for -- if you're going for the packages because they're convenient, i get it, i'm a working mom. a lot of us need convenient foods. however, they do make them without nitrates and uncured. so look out for those type of

columbia, south carolina. a school resource office, a sheriff's deputy locally there. it's under investigation after aggressively confronting a female student for allegedly disrupting class. students captured the disturbing incident on their cell phones. >> are you going to come with me, or do i have to make you? >> so you can see the officer flipping her backward in her chair there. it's unclear what led to that incident, but do you hear the officer ben fields ask the student to come with him after she refused multiple times. that confrontation. >> gosh. >> oh, that hurt. that angle right there is on her head. >> she could have been so injured. >> yes. >> like on her neck. >> the teacher in the classroom asked the officer to come in after there was some kind of problem. the aclu and rich land black 2 calling it egregious and

unacceptable and the sheriff says they fully understand the incident and they will address it once the investigation is completed. the school superintendent put out at statement writing student safety and always will be the district's top priority. the district will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the safety of our students. pending the outcome of the investigation, the district has direct the that the school resource officer not return to any school in the district. the student was detained after the incident and later released to her parents. the charge was disturbing the classroom i think is how they define it had. again, we don't know the context before the video, but it's hard to imagine a context where that was appropriate. >> if there's a context that makes that an understandable incident, it is important and imperative that the sheriff's department give that context because unless that student was armed and there was immediate danger to al's point, to matt lauer's point this morning as well the other kids in that room were terrified, and this is where this gets complicated when we have to say as journalists, where the context, blah, blah,

blah, blah, blah. that's why you have investigators and they need to quickly answer some of these pressing questions. >> yeah. >> that's why i said it's hard to imagine a concept where that's appropriate. >> what's amazing, if you listen to the tape you don't hear anything. these kids are just terrified obviously and just riveted to their seats. >> and all they are doing is using their cell phones to record it and maybe that's their voice. important to note this officer ben fields had been brought up in a lawsuit in 2007 for excessive force. >> which they beat. >> which they beat and in 2013 there was another student who brought similar charges, also alleging that -- that the officer had been targeting african-american students, and that case is still pending, so, yes, there perhaps was some kind of history though the officers have said that, you know, they are clear -- that they haven't done anything wrong so we'll keep following that story though because it is -- it's so

where we're still talking about the rain, kind of still the remnants of what was hurricane patricia. the heaviest of the rain though just off the coast of florida, especially right over the eastern gulf of mexico but the rain that we're going to see today caused maybe some troubles. we'll be back through the midwest where we could end up with a couple of inches of rain through the day today. tomorrow a washout in the northeast stretching up into boston but it does exit fairly quickly so by the time we get into thursday morning the rain should start to pull away. as much as 2 to 3 inches of rain through southern indiana and western north carolina could end up with a couple inches of rain. as for the northeast, new york city, about an inch and a half and parts of new england could see about 2 to 3 inch good morning, i'm meteorologist kari hall. some light rain is moving into the north bay. the rest of the bay area dry so far. but you may have some light showers as we go to the afternoon, and it continues into early tomorrow. highs today up to 80 days in los gatos. palo alto 76 degrees.
