wounds led to the county corn nor -- coroner pronounced him dead at the scene. >> cook opened fire on an officer during a traffic stop near the tennessee, kentucky border. the officer survived. his bullet proof vest saved him. cook managed to escape. that same night he got into a shoot out with a kentucky state trooper before disappearing again this time on foot. the fbi and u.s. marshalls joined the search and the school district was shut down for three days. >> it's hard for us to see one person could terrorize a community that much. >> he approached a home in the burksville area and asked for a ride. residents contacted police but he ran in the woods. they set up a perimeter tracking cook with k-9 units, night vision. two associates were arrested

highs reaching into the upper 70s and 81 degrees for the south. winds will be breezy, too, as we go into the afternoon. wet weather tomorrow. state. it's re-igniting the debate over religion in school. a seattle area football coach has been sidelined for praying on the field. this is a decision that is dividing a community. nbc's joe fryer has the story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the school district says a coach cannot lead players in prayer calling that an overt public religious display. the coach was placed on paid administrative leave but he was allowed to attend last night's game. with the bremerton knights took the field the assistant coach was benched. joe kennedy watched but in a way he was the one with fans. >> i'm just a guy. who happens to believe in god and praise. >> kennedy was put on leave for

praying on the 50 yard line after games, something he has done for years often joined by players. >> he says if you want to be in here join me. if not, that's your decision. i'm not going to force you to be in here. it's your total decision. >> reporter: but when the school district learned about the prayers last month it ordered kennedy to stop, citing supreme court cases the district says students can pray on their own but it is a constitutional violation of students' rights for a district employee acting as such to initiate prayers with students. >> the warriors competed for the past 48 minutes. >> reporter: the coach abided at first, with a motivational speech. but this month he resumed praying after attorneys from a religious legal group told him it's okay as long as he's not coercing students. >> he quietly expressed his personal faith in prayer and they voluntarily decided to join him. there is no constitutional violation there. >> reporter: the school system

disagreed putting him on leave, a move applauded by some parents. >> as a parent i'm an employee here, a taxpayer, and it's just not okay to use public funds and public resources to showboat your own personal opinion. >> reporter: the connection between sports and prayer runs deep from the pros to high school games, private and public. >> doing it for 22 years, i got to think that 99.9% of the teams have come to the center of the field afterwards. >> reporter: back in bremerton after the knights pulled off a victory in the final moments coach kennedy once again led a prayer, not on the 50 yard line but in the bleachers, not as a coach but as a fan. the school district says it is offered kennedy a private location to pray that does not interfere with his duties but he has declined, kennedy's attorneys say that the school district simply hasn't done enough. they plan to take this to the

others, however, will call it a significant change. first of all, it involves sending a small number of americans special operations forces into syria. that means american boots on the ground in syria working with local partners. in the past the u.s. has only been advising and assisting from afar mostly through air strikes. more fighter jets will be sent here to turkey conducting more air strikes against isis. a-10s are already here and a-15s are on the way. action will be placed in northern iraq to assist this campaign against isis. when you look at it altogether,

there are three significant announcements, all of them involve deeper u.s. military engagement on the war on isis. >> thank you for that. stand by there. >> let's go to nbc's nick. what are they saying at the pentagon? >> matt, after more than a year of yearly 8,000 air strikes against enemy forces in both iraq and syria, the best that senior military officials can say is that the fight there against isis is at a stalemate. the overall plan is just not working. training and equipping iraqi forces, syria rebels has not proven to be a breaking point. they need a game changer. they're going to be far more aggressive in terms of the special forces operations on the ground. military officials will tell you you cannot win a war with air strikes alone. you need some boots on the ground. the white house says these are

not boots on the ground, this is not a change but in fact, it is a change for a more aggressive strategy and effort to defeat and destroy isis which afterall is president obama's goal. >> before you go, i want to go over these numbers again. richard angle is saying not to exceed 100. these are special operations forces, will they be fighting alongside serian rebel groups? >> that is still unclear. they will indeed be fighting along with kurds as they did in iraq just a little more than a week ago in which the army maeser sergeant was killed. not clear they will be fighting side by side with the serian rebel groups. there's still a lot of gray area and doubts about exactly who you may be fighting with when you're on the ground in syria unless, of course, it's the serian kurds. >> all right, thank you. >> let's go to the white house now.

it happened as the flight was getting ready to take off. everyone on board was quickly able to evacuate, but one passenger was injured running away from the plane. we want to begin this half hour with a one-year prison sentence for owen labrie, the former prep school student, convicted of sexually assaulting an underage classmate. this morning we're hearing from his victim's mother exclusively. natalie had a chance to sit down and talk to her. natalie. >> that's right. guys, this is the first time she's speaking out, and she had a lot to say about what happened to her daughter and the trial that has consumed their lives for more than a year. >> guilty. >> the dramatic trial brought national attention to an elite prep school and a hidden sexual practice that's been part of the school's culture for years. speaking out exclusively for the first time the mother of the victim told me her daughter never once regretted speaking up. >> it's been excruciating for her, but she just wanted to do what was right. >> reporter: in a tense courtroom owen labrie made one more quiet appeal waiting for the judge to pronounce the sentence.

the judge already knew his decision. >> you are sentenced to the house of corrections for a period of 12 months. >> reporter: one year followed by probation, pending an appeal, a suspended sentence for the felony of using at computer to lure a minor and labrie has to register as a sex offender. >> this was a sexual conquest. >> reporter: each side made its final appeal to the judge. an impassioned videotaped statement from the victim. we're concealing her identity. >> what he did to me made me feel like i didn't belong on this planet and that i would be better off dead than having to deal with the terrible things that every day were thrown in my direction after doing the right thing. >> reporter: labrie's defense counsel. >> the punishment that owen labrie has suffered to date is the enormous for him. he's now known by so many people

new study that says perhaps it makes the flu shot less effective. >> which is exactly the population that we don't want to see that in, right? if you think about how many people over the age of 65 or 75 take statins, it's same vulnerable group who get the flu shot. why am i saying vulnerable? number one, we see a rise in flu in elderly patients, number one, and number two there's an age-related decline in your immunity as you get older so now we have two studies that are hypothesis-generating. not definitively saying they do reduce the effect i wasness but it's raised the possibility that it can reduce the response to the vaccine which could translate into more respiratory illness. >> this puts people in a pickle. you mentioned if you're older you're more susceptible to flu, more likely to die of the flu and if you're on statins the flu hot is not effective, what am i supposed to do? >> a really important bottom line. given the fact this is the first study that has even looked at this the there's absolutely no formal recommendation that if you are take aggrastatin you

should forgo the flu shot, and if you are planning on getting the flu shot that you should stop the statin, nobody is saying that. >> there's a high-dose flu shot. >> and this is incredibly important, approved last year there's a high-dose flu vaccine which is roughly four times as strong as standard dose. it is recommended for all people over the age of 65. it does boost the response to the vaccine and also has a modest effect on efficacy. next topic. >> yes. >> there was a study that read essentially as i read it low-fat diets don't really work. >> not the headline, not a good headline. >> what are we supposed to take from this. >> this was interesting, actually what we call a meta analysis over 63 randomized controlled trials on all these different dietary interventions. headline red low-fat diets don't work to lose weight. that's not exactly true. the real find some things that low carb diets edged out low-fat diets in terms of weight loss,
