the commute is moving now with mike. >> well, kari, we'll show you here, this slow drive right here. 101 just north of 680 and moved the camera up a bit. somewhere on the approach north 101 and 680 reports of a crash moving to the center divide. we'll show you on the map, that's coming up through here at this congestion point and the other crash on the shoulder and possibly the slow lane at oakland road and a new issue and maybe a stall north 87 and something is going on causing more slow down and the build is on gently for the rest of the south bay, but, again, tuesday will hit pretty hard getting closer to 630. south 680 moving smoothly and now three vehicles reported in the middle lane as you hit vargas. that will be an issue if they don't clear that quickly, we'll get an update from chp. typical build and pattern there as you pass by the san mateo bridge. upper east shore we have a stall or and then clear by the time you geet golden gate field. the bay bridge metering lights

on. no surprise there. i'll show you even though it's at speed, live look shows you there will be company and starting its build south now out of novato. >> still much smoother than yesterday. 6:01 right now. a student at cal says she was stalked and then assaulted as a man tried to force his way inside of her dorm. stephanie chuang joining us live. this alleged assault happened last week but uc police are just releasing the information now. >> they are. sam, it's unclear why it has take a week for the warning to come out. they didn't hear directly from student, but they heard from someone else about the alleged attack that happened here on channing way right at the front door. probably began after a female student got off the bus near durant avenue 10:30 monday night of last week. campus police say the man started to follow and talk to the student who ignored him as she walked roughly two balocks o

the dorm. the man grabbed the woman's arm and shirt pushing her against the door and trying to intimidate her into letting him inside. took off as soon as someone else opened the from inside. no suspect description. police say this is actually relayed to them by a campus security authority, which would include people like parking enforcement staff, faculty, residential advisors. again it is not clear why it took a week for the information to get out. if police just learned of it yesterday when it was published. cal was one of four california universities ougy iesy ies audi state. the school did not sufficiently train students or faculty and staff on responding to and reporting these incidents to the right people. since then, i will say cal has bolstered student resources, including adding 24/7, while what are known as confidential care advocates and these are people dedicated to students and teaching them about their rights and how to report these incidents. live here at the cal campus,

stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." happening today, the first tuesday of november, which means it's election day. should be wearing red, white and blue. >> purple. blend with the suit. into polls across the bay area they officially open though not in all nine bay area counties. >> kris sanchez joining us in studio. pretty important issues on the ballot. a lot of focus in san francisco, everything from the highly controversial prop f to who will lead san francisco sheriff department. >> red, white and blue for the big presidential elections and it is a quiet election day in many of our bay area counties. some have nothing to dealameda, napa county, nothing on the registrar's websites for them. san francisco really is the hotbed for this election and a lot related to mayor ed lee. he is on the ballot along with five other candidates with him. san francisco uses voting, so our political analyst predicts that he will easily win a second term. now, the district three

supervisor race may be more of a referendum about how voters feel about mayor ed lee because he is backing one candidate, julie christiansen also running wilma pang and a former supervisor. now, mayor ed lee also taking a strong position on proposition f. that so-called air b & b measure which would restrict short-term rentals to 75 days a year instead of the current 90. also on the ballot prop a, the broadly supported affordable housing measure, which is a $310 million bond to build low-income and middle-income affordable housing. san francisco sheriff isologist running for another term and he'll find out whether his support for the city's sanctuary policy might cost him votes. running against him vicki hennessey and business owner john. making history with its first full mail-in election. increase voter turnout and cut

election costs. still, if you want to drop it off in person, you can do that in your city or town hall. if you are in santa clara county and you're thinking, boy, my mail box has been awfully empty, that's because it is a quiet election. it is a consolidated election and only people in the city of los altos, the orchard school district have issues to decide. i'm going to all the registrar voter information for all of our nine bay area counties because i was unnerved on how quiet this election day is. i'm tweeting them and also putting them up on facebook and working with our web team to make sure all of it is listed on our website so you can make sure to find out where you live today and find your election results later on. >> you might be our social media elected queen today. >> i like that.

suspended the next gop debate. the campaigns are now trying to negotiate new debate rules moving forward. our poll for the democrats show hillary clinton has solidified her lead over bernie sanders up 25% earlier this month to 31% this morning. also, more than eight in ten democrats say they can see themselves backing clinton for the nomination compared to 61% for sanders. former maryland governor martin o'malley picked up only 3% support. now the democrats are next scheduled to debate a week from saturday. we'll keep tabs on that. also keeping tabs on all the rain that hit the bay area yesterday. some records. and, you know a lot of rain, that means a lot of mud as mudslides. one east bay road remained shut down as crews tried to clear a mess left behind from yesterday's strong storm. are these mudslides a sneak peek of what to come for us in the next few months? >> let's hope not, laura. i'm sure scientists and geologists tell us otherwise. mudslide shut down two roads in the east bay and livermore yesterday. you see one of the roads that was shut down. you're looking at it, paterson path. those are headlights coming frommy heading westbound into livermore for the commute. this is for people who want tause 580. this has reopened. after mud from a nearby hill poured on to this windy, two-lane road during yesterday's heavy rain storm and the slide made the road impassable. stranded one driver. the public works department to bring in heavy equipment to remove the mess. >> this rain harder than we could handle. the lightning started coming and we had to close the road for safety reasons. >> again, paterson pass reopened. this is what it looked like a fews from here on tesla road and the roads southeast of livermore. i just spoke with a chp officer who informed me that road is

still closed. you might recall that that area around tesla burned this summer and left the hillsides bare. very susceptible to erosion as is evidence by yesterday's rain storm and not just a problem here in livermore, unfortunately. but as well in the rest of the bay area. showing you this morning, a map from the california geological surand it has areas marked in red in the nine-county area and if you're in an area that is red or the redder the area is, unfortunately, that is the greater risk of a mudslide. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we also saw the snow on the ground. maybe bob's mind was in the sierra after the preview yesterday of what could come this winter. >> that's right. we got some stuff up there, right, kari? >> just posted a picture on my facebook page of a live web cam in south lake tahoe. absolutely beautiful this morning. as you step out the door, it is cold. only 39 degrees now in napa and 49 deit grees in sunnyvale.

expect those highs to be in the mid-60s all across the bay area today. even with all that sunshine, our temperatures will be slow to rise and some spots hitting the low 70s like livermore, as well as santa rosa, high of 71 degrees. rest of the bay area in the 60s. mike has a heads up in the east bay. >> kari, we'll start with the bay bridge toll plaza. this is no surprise. filled in for all lanes and a beautiful sunrise. as we call out what is above the hills here, looking at the lights down below. let me show you the approach coming through oak for 880 northbound as you come up past the coliseum. volume southbound towards the san mateo bridge. on the maps you see no real problem and your typical trend and we have a stalled vehicle reported west 80 right around san pab low avenue and that will be an issue as you approach. get that cleared to the shoulder and see the slow downs start for the upper east shore freeway. hayward has slowing down across

anticipating for weeks -- we've learned that the strugg a decision that many folks have been anticipating for weeks after rumblings that his own teammates wanted this done. we now learned the struggling 49ers quaterback is going to the bench. 49ers insider with comcast sports desk confirmed that niners are going totart blaine gabbert against the atlanta falcons on sunday. kaepernick led the 49ers to the super bowl only two years ago. kaepernick managed to throw for only six touchdowns over his first eight games. >> they know what they have in colin kaepernick and it's pretty clear that they don't consider him a $14.3 million quarterback, which is what he's scheduled to earn next season. so, it definitely does signal that the 49ers plan to move on from colin kaepernick next season. >> by the way, we might not be done yet, more changes could be

coming on tap. today is the nfl's trade deadline. the 49ers have already moved tight end vernon davis to the denver broncos. a protest over fracking on monday night football. two members of the activist group, we are cold point, repelled from the upper deck at bank of america stadium in charlotte, north carolina. unfurling a banner that read, the bank is financing a liquefied natural gas facility in maryland. it involves the controversial techneck fracking which opponents says is regulated and much like that stunt. >> interesting venue that they chose there. some wonder if it's a effort to beef up safety in berkeley is coming at the expense ovpersonal privacy. police installed a license plater on telegraph avenue comes in the wake of five attempted kidnapping in that area since september. some neighbors hope it leads to an arrest. others call it a surveillance

"new york magazine" calling it sickening. monday no longer considered it a legitimate case. he has maintained his innocence all along, even publishing e-mails in a counterlaw suit that showed a friendly and consensual relationship that lasted years. following the stanford decision on monday thecuser has dropped her allegations and he has dropped defamation suit against her. the state of california is putting volkswagen on notice. accusing the company of using its cheating software not just volkswagen's but, porsche and audis. wv owns those cars brands. california along with the national epa says it cheated with porsche cayennes and audi a8s among others. this new problem for volkswagen is a big one, but may not be its biggest problem. we go back to when vw executives were testifying among congress. among their claims only a few

engineers knew about the cheating. the scandal grows beyond our one car line. san francisco-based fitbit saying all kinds of happy things this morning. not afraid of the amwatch, it's selling more and more fitness trackers and revenue is up, things are great. but then the company announced it is going to sell more stock. a follow-up offering it's called. investors hate that. shares in the company get their value because a limited number of them. i have a share, you want a share, you have to buy it for me, but when companies print up new shares, it's a sad day for investors because now there are more of them. fitbit is down about 7%. 7% despite whether of that ruly good news. laura and sam. >> take some steps in a new direction. >> she has her fitbit. >> get it? 6:19 right now. the same storm system that brought all that rain here to the bay area, look what it did here in the sierra. snow. one to two feet in the higher

els. really great news for the dry reservoirs that rely on that snow pack. even better news for people looking to hit the slopes or look to play around on it. all this fresh powder allowing two ski resorts to open two weeks early. pretty high elevation there and very popular right off of 80. wave to your mom and dad. alice is on friday. >> we're talking about measuring stuff, not just snow here, but you guys can get out and go sledding if that's what you're talk about. rainfall yesterday. we had record amounts. >> daily rainfall records were set across many spots in the bay area. many of us getting half an inch in some spots and as we take a live look now in san francisco, you see that it has cleared out, but it is cool this morning. behind that cold front, that swept through the bay area yesterday. now we are getting a chance to dry out. it is chilly. and taking a look now at lake tahoe from our weather

underground camera. this is tahoe south. and look at how beautiful it is with the snow coating the pine trees and also in pine crest just a little bit farther to the south. you can see that there is some deep snow especially as you go up above,000 feet. and as you step out the door, it's only 45 degrees in livermore ask oakland. in san francisco it's 52 degrees. and 39 degrees now in napa. our next chance of snow for the bay area heading into the forecast on sunday. this is what the computer model showed. some green right there centered on the bay area by sunday evening. it may linger into early monday and may also bring more snow to the sierra. so, looking good all around. our temperatures staying down. the outlook for san jose for the rest of the week, our temperatures only going up a couple degrees each day. and staying below average in the near term. a look at the weekend forecast will be pretty nice. with highs in the 70s across most of the spots and like the tri-valley, 75 degrees. san francisco 66 and, once

again, we'll be watching out for that next chance of some showers on sunday. let's check in now with mike to see where he may be slowing down now. >> kari, we were slowing down here at 101 just north of 280 and that's looking like it's a little better but because part of the reason what is happening and a crash north 101 and letting all these folks get a break and jam things up starting at 85 because there is a box truck or a big rig. i think it's a box truck over on its side there. blocking two lanes and we're still waiting for details to determine how long it will take to clear and that will make more people use 85 undoubtedly and 87 that is slow from an earlier stall. south bay build really kicking in. tesla still closed for mudslide activity there. 580 moves smoothly towards the dublin change and your typical build there, as well as the rest of your bay area there is a stall just clearing from san pablo and no problems towards the bay bridge toll plaza and a quick look at the bay bridge.

happening later today, a big day in the warriors potential move across the bay. san francisco expected to certify the environmental impact report on the proposed mission bay arena. less than four hours a public hearing is going to be held at city hall where city officials will decide if the report complies with california law

opponents of the project are concerned about potential traffic issues patients not being able to get the urgent care they need at ucsf hospital. we heard about the potential dangers hidden inside artificial turf. now, the state is spending millions of dollars to look into possible health risks. state leaders hope the study will give answers to mounting concerns over so-called crumb rubber and its possible link to cancer and other diseases. crumb rubber is made of recycles tires. the study is the third of its kind done by environmental health office assessment. the first meeting was last night in berkeley. the study is expected to take three years. 6:26 on your tuesday morning. a car riddled with bullets on a busy freeway and a man found shot inside. what police are telling us about this mysterious crime scene. another alleged assault on the cal campus and the location of this latest case that has students even more concerned.

afternoon. comfortably cool weather with a lot of sunshine and breezy winds. expect a few spots to hit 70 degrees like the north bay and the tri-valley. i'll detail that coming up and we'll take a look ahead to our next chance of rain that's coming up in a few minutes. and let's check in now with mike for a look now at where you may be slowing down. >> we'll start with the pleasant news first. look at palo alto and how beautiful and you'll get the sunlight and more folks earlier will get the subright in their eyes for 101 and 280. look at your map. worried about coming off the peninsula into the south bay. and now north 101 already hitting hard, especially right here. this is what sam was alluding to. two of your lanes blocked by an overturned truck and reports of propane tank in the area. exercise a lot of caution and more folks are hearing about this going along the 85 and that's causing more slowing up to 87. this will be tough for this portion of san jose, which is

already tough because of the folks coming out of morgan hill, gilroy and towards the downtown area. looking over here towards the tri-valley. not so tough. an easy drive towards the dublin interchange and over the san mateo bridge to the peninsula. the sun going to be in your eyes. upper east shore freeway slowing towards san pablo avenue. we'll send it right back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it it is 6:31 and new this morning a young woman says she was stalked and then assaulted right outside her uc berkeley dorm. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live on the cal campus and this just happened last week and uc police are just releasing that information now. >> they are, laura. it's unclear why this information, why this warning is just coming out a week later about this alleged attack, which is pretty unnerving. trying to get back to her, her here her dorm late at night and a man getting physical just outside trying to force his way in here at the front door.

this reportedly began after the festudemale student got off the monday night of last week. the man started to follow the student who ignored him as she walked two blocks to the beverly clary dorm. once at the door, police say the man grabbed her arm and shirt pushing the student against the front door saying sexually explicit comments. now, there is no suspect descripti description. police say this was actually relayed to them by a campus security authority, not by the student. the campus security authority would includal like faculty and residential advisors. what isn't clear is why this took week for the information to get out. on a related note, cal was one of four california universities audited by the state in how it handled sexual harassment and violence. the summary in june 2014 concluded the school did not sufficiently educate nor train faculty and staff on reporting

and responding to the right people. cal has bolstered services including 24/7 confidential care vkts basically offering students any resources they can. also now mandatory for undergrad students to complete classes on how to prevent them and how to report them. live here at the cal campus stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." san francisco police still looking for the man seen in the surveillance video. he beat up 560-year-old man outside of a coffee shop in the pulp gulch neighborhood. the victim died from his injuries. this happened on october 1st. they believe he was working a construction job in the city on the same day. a mystery surrounding a freeway shooting that left a man critically injured. police first got the call a little after 4:00 p.m. yesterday on a shooting near the exit in san pablo. officers found a man inside a bullet riddled car stopped on the shoulder of the road.

traffic backed up as police and the chp investigated. >> it's hard to say what could have happened at this point. i mean, so many options that you just don't know what could have been out there. could there have been a break in traffic and a million witnesses? we just don't know at this point. >> investigators don't have a lot to go on right now. they're not sure if it was road rage a targeted shooting or a random act of violence. happening today, it's election day, carve out a little time from work to go to the polls. if you haven't voted by mail, the polls are opening in the bay area. >> kris sanchez here and there are actually pretty big issues on the ballot. everything from how tall buildings can be and who will relieve san francisco sheriff's department. >> three bay area counties and you're thinking it's election day? well, you can be forgiven for that because there is no election scheduled for alameda, solano and napa county. san francisco is the hot bed on this election and lot of it is related to mayor ed lee. he is on the ballot along with

and putting them up on our website. you can also find all the election results as they start coming in later today. sam? >> kris will guide you along for complete election coverage of all bay area counties. go to nbcbayarea.com and track election results on our twitter and facebook feeds. san francisco leaders today are poised to pass new tough gun sale laws. supervisors are holding a final vote on the new law that requires videotaping for any gun or ammunition sales. the problem is that san francisco's last gun store recently shut its doors for good fighting a web of regulations. supervisors say the new law is a more at any gun store that may open down the road. also happening today, engineers will explain exactly what is on tap for this weekend's big implosion of the old bay bridge span. on saturday morning, cal trans will demolish the largest of

piers that once held the old eastern span. before the implosion takes place, traffic is supposed to be stopped entirely for up to a quarter of an hour. during today's briefing they will detail the safety measures being taken and what is being done to mitt mitigate the impact on sea life. with the rain we saw yesterday comes a lot of mud and mudslides. one east bay road remains shut down as crews try and clear up the mess left behind from yesterday's strong storm. "today in the bay" bob redell joins us live from livermore. many people wondering if these landslides are a sneak peek of what could be to come in the next few months. >> well, you can see the barin hills behind me, sam. this is, of course, as a result of the drought from all these years and yesterday some of the mud in this hill gave way here. this is at paterson pass. this is one of the two roads that were shut down that has reopened. looking that headheadlights. commuters coming westbound into

livermore. this is a major short cut for people who want to avoid the mess that is usually on 580. you can see it did reopen in time for this morning's commute. several hours ago was shut down while the alameda county public works department fried to clear the roadway and the mud that slid into the pavement during yesterday afternoon's heavy rains. a similar scene a few miles southeast of here where debris shut down tesla road just west of carnegie and that is still shut down. yesterday at least it cut off one woman from getting to her home. >> i am getting home from work and the road is closed. this is from all the fires. i'm used to it. >> and they're used to it because of the fires in that area over the summer, which, of course, as it did here in liverand that part of livermore, it left the hillsides barren and very acceptable to erosion. a taste of what we got yesterday

during the heavy rain storms. if you see this map from the california geological survey a lot of red areas. the redder the area in the bay area, the greater risk of a mudslide. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. check the forecast right now. boy, we did get a lot of rain yesterday. broke some records. >> we broke some daily rainfall records and some of the rainfall totals we have for the day on the second day of november is close to what we normally get for the whole month. about an inch and a half in los gas gatos and over an inch of rain and the most rain we had in 271 days. now, we're drying out. it is cool this morning. highs will only reach into the mid to upper 60s. a few of us hitting the low 70s. and we do have some more rain in the forecast. i'll tell you when to expect it and a look at the temperature trends through the rest of the week, that's coming up in a few minutes. but we've had an incident coming

from the north bay, right, mike? >> that's right, kari? a shot for san rafael and the traffic building here heading out of novato to central san rafael and show you the map. some slowing where we showed you the camera shot. others heading down to the tunnel and that's going to be an issue because we had reports that two lanes are currently blocked by two pickup trucks and three other vehicles there and that's right by the waldo tunnel on the sausalito side from what i understand. we don't see slowing on sensors yet but it happened a few minutes ago. meanwhi meanwhile, the east shore freeway shows the typical slow down and the earlier crash looks like the activity has pushed to the shoelder and bay bridge metering lights are on and the back up in the maze and slowing through concord and walnut creek. so does the rest of your bay as we look at the east bay and tri-valley. call your attention to the south bay. san jose the other outstanding issue. north 101 and two lanes are blocked by an overturned truck and over towards the 85 split

mentioned monday that virgin america started service from hawaii to sfo. it sparked a fare war with round-trip tickets now under $400 to the islands. now, remember, when we told you last week that virgin america was planning to make some major expansions at sfo, as well, company says san francisco, in fact, is the hottest travel market in the nation. so, we're hoping between the extra competition and then lower oil prices, which just continue to trend down, we could see some very good deals at sfo and not just to hawaii. although that is everybody's first choice. >> we're not complaining. >> a lot of tan, very relaxed people in the bay area. >> sounds good. >> sounds like a good recipe. 6:47 right now. hey, new video to show you this morning. keep your eye on the upper right corner of your screen. a falling meter how can you miss it there streaking across the night sky in thailand last night. it was witnessed and recorded on dash cams in the capital city of

the look now at the temperatures here. it's 45 degrees in livermore and 49 degrees in sunnyvale and san jose at 49 degrees. stays breezy as we go through the day. winds coming in from the north and northwest. sustained winds at 25 miles an hour. half moon bay 34. you may have some higher gusts. it stays up into the evening as that low pressure continues to move away. so, here's a look at our futurecast. what it looks like through the rest of the week. stays all dry. mostly clears and then check out what happens on sunday. we may have some more rain moving through the bay area by late sunday evening into early monday morning. so, not completely done with the rain just yet. but over the next few days as we see some more dry weather, our temperatures staying slightly below average in san francisco and all of the bay area. our temperatures will be in the 70s. stay in the 60s in san francisco, but the tri-valley 75 degrees on friday. we'll have more of those 70s

into the weekend and sunday slightly cooler as we watch out for that next chance of rain. let's check in now with mike with a look at where he be slowing down with that morning commute. >> not what you usually expect. we have the south bay build, but we expect this portion of 101 to show the slowing. that is getting a little break because everyone is held up behind this crash and from highway 85 and a split that is causing a problem. that is actually causing a shift. 280 showing a little break, as well, as folks are held up south of there. looking at north 101 jamming up here. folks hearing about it here or on the radio, perhaps. taking 85 north to 85 and hearing about slower drives from there. take monterey road or highway or whatever you call it. your alternate same stretch of roadway that they keep changing the name for historical reasons. that's the problem for the south bay. no real surprises here. 680 shows your slowing off of 580 and dumbarton bridges we'll

landslides in the bay area. let's bring in bob redell live in livermore where yesterday's heavy rain did trigger two landslides. one road is back open, but plenty of mud out there. >> yeah, that road is patter pass here in the east part of livermore. main two-lane windy road, a shortcut that connects people from the city of tracy and you can see the headlights heading westbound into livermore. it has reopened after mud from a nearby hill poured on to this road during yesterday's heavy rain storm. it stranded one driver. alameda county public works department brought in heavy equipment to remove the mess. >> raining harder than we can handle. once the hail started in, the lightning started coming, we had to close the road for safety reasons. >> and this is what it looked like a few miles from here on tesla road in the hills southeast of livermore. according to chp, it is still shut down this morning because of a mudslide. you might recall that area
