downtown san jose from the east foothills (adlib) kira/2shot wa7:00 on your saturday morning. we're taking a look at downtown san jose on a chilly morning. good morning to you, thanks for joining us. anthony slaughter has a look at the microclimate forecast. i was really cold this morning. >> it's chilly. we're talking 30s. yeah, the seasons have changes. 39 degrees right now here's a live shot from the north bay. you can see travel moving without a problem. sunshine there, but a little bit of coastal fog in san francisco.

overall it's nice and bright. temperatures are expected to warm, mid 60s for the coast line. a little bit warmer than it was yesterday, you know what? all of that changes tomorrow. we have a storm that's expected to move through bringing rain, sierra snow. we're time that out in our next report. >> you really called that one on monday. it was good we look forward to more rain. thanks. well, the people of middletown, california, are celebrating a small victory. it means so much more to their community that was nearly destroyed by the valley fire. september's deadly wildfires postponed the homecoming game. many of the families in the town don't even have homes kbmpt they say what they have is a team of middletown high. last night hundreds showed up as the team faced lake county high for the game. the crowd cheered and gave thanks to the first responders. the community donated food for the game and showed the true meaning of what they call

middletown strong. >> i had tears in my eyes. you know, it warms your heart. the small town and everyone's so close in this community. it brings us all much closer just to have this homecoming. >> by the way, middletown won last night, 12-6. student solidarity after a horrific attack. last night a candle light vigil was held in honor of wednesday's stabings. filled the campus quadto remember the victims. yesterday was the first day of classes after the stabbing carried out by this man. campus police shot and killed the 18-year-old from santa clara after he lunged at officers with his knife. costa county sheriff investigators are looking into

the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell. a deputy find him before 2:00 in the afternoon. deputies said they performed cpr to try to revive the man but he later was pronounced dead. the inmate has not been identified. a special commission chosen to investigate the santa clara county jail may not end up doing the skrjob it was intended to d. the first meeting is set for today but the group might not be disbanded. the county has hired a consultant to do a separate investigation of the jail system. that could make the special commission redundant. this stems from the beating death of michael tyree. many of us look forward to fresh local crab, but the much anticipated season is being put on hold. you may have heard because the seafood is being deemed too toxic to eat.

algae blooms of the california coast has raised naturally occurring toxin levels, making them davis to eat. this means commercial season is delayed and rock crab season is completely closed until scientists give the all clear. expect prices to skyrocket. >> no fishermen going out, i will say, maybe $20 a pound. for the restaurants, maybe $60 for a crab. >> on thursday, california fish and wild life held an emergency meeting and voted to suspend recreational crabbing from oregon to santa barbara. trying to win back its customers, the san jose restaurant linked to the recent shigella scare is reopened three weeks after it was shut down. it's being blamed for nearly 200 reported cases of the highly

contagious bacteria. there's a green sign out front deeming the restaurant safe. yesterday a small but steady crowd of customers headed back in. >> everything's going to be fine. >> you're not worried? >> no. >> the people that were affected our sincere apology. >> the owner says he doesn't believe his employees are to blame for the outbreak. flu season is here and it has claimed its second victim in california. this time an infant. it's a reminder to get your flu shot to protect not only yourself but babies who are too young to be vaccinated. the other reported flu death was in santa clara county, an adult who suffered from other health complications. both cases make it clear everyone should get a flu shot. >> this year my message is get your flu shot. i'm sure we're going to have a

better match this year. they changed the strain and the vaccine to better match what was circulating late last year. >> health experts anticipate the same strain of flu as last year. they suspect this year's vaccine will be successful. the student who posted a racist message at berkeley high could face serious charges. it will be up to the district attorney to decide. the 15-year-old student did confess to posting the message. it had referenced to the kkk and called for lynching. the message enraged many students. more than 1,500 of whom marched out of school on thursday and protested. aside from pelsh criminal charges, school administrators are considering expelling the student. both they and the police say they don't believe the student meant to harm anyone. we have more, coming up, they're being called out.

(adlib) downtown san jose from mount hamilton welcome back. it's 7:09. we're taking a live look at downtown san jose. it is a chilly morning out there. be sure to bundle up as you head out. rain might be on the way tomorrow. anthony slaughter will be along soon to tell us about it. if you plan to drive or take public transit this weekend, expect grid lock. construction crews have started work on a project that will tie up traffic near the ball park for a week. this particular project is expected to be wrapped up next

weekend. they are looking at the intersection of 4th and king. that project will eventually allow muni to run to china town. first the east bay's biggest offenders were named. now the list of the biggest water users in the city and peninsula is being released. a peninsula country club tops the list. men lo used 20,000 gallons of water a day trying to keep the greens green. that's nearly 13,000 times the average household user. "today in the bay's" chuck cope luhas the report. >> reporter: less than 24 hours after the commission revealed who is using the most water, we saw landscape crews working to keep the grass green. in september the country club was allotted 254,509 gallons

daily. 26% more than its allotment. >> i've seen sprinklers come on during the day, that's not a good thing. >> allotments were based on 2013 uses. the golf course appealed to use 2007. it was agreed to that and the country club went over. is it using gray water? >> no, it's using potable water. >> it makes it even worse, doesn't it? >> we would like them to reduce their use. the financial incentive is to try to drive that home. i'm sure we'll engage in a conversation with them about what their plans are for the future. >> reporter: neighbors have noticed some conservation since the course reopened. >> in the last year they let major portions of their new landscaping die basically and just maintain certain areas like around the greens and the center of the fairway and so on. so our feeling over here is they've been a tremendous neighbor. >> reporter: chuck cope lu, nbc bay area news.

room full of supermodels and movie stars. that's not the problem. he then called out de niro commenting on his character in the god father ii. de niro stepped up to the podium and was not amused. he scolded him for being condescending towards celebrities and directed a clois expletive at the tech ceo. probably why we didn't use the sound from that. the bay area is leading the way in jobs. the latest numbers from the commerce department says 270,000 jobs were created last night and the jobless rate dropping. the new is even better at unemployment at 3.7%. one of the biggest automakers says it's expanding. >> reporter: toyota's billion dollar plan to develop

artificial intelligence and robotics in silicon valley is on. >> i thought working with toyota was the best choice. >> reporter: putting the auto giant in the middle of a hi techauto scrum with tesla and google. >> it makes sense because the auto industry is about the experience and about the link between hardware and software and about cutting edge technology. >> reporter: all this bay area growth is leading to new offices, new jobs. >> san jose is growing as a city. there's a lot more jobs coming in. >> reporter: and new concerns. the bay area council economic institute says more of us are commuting long distances because of a housing shortage. >> i commute far fooget here because i want to work in sill caught valley. >> reporter: a challenge to an area boasting a jobless rate of 3.5%. >> job growth here is taking place throughout a wide variety of services.

there are lots of opportunities for people now to get employeed or reemployeed. >> reporter: lots of jobs already here, with more on the way. scott budman, nbc bay area news. all right. let's check in with anthony slaughter with a look at our weekend forecast. >> it's looking good. a little chilly this morning. you may have noticed. had to kick up the heat up this morning. we're expecting another storm system. >> which is great. >> tomorrow afternoon and evening we'll see rain. let's get into the time line. right now you can see from our live shot over the golden gate bridge there is a little fog. otherwise it's chilly for all of us. later on, the inland valleys jump into the 70s. we will see sunshine across the entire bay. here we go for tomorrow, another storm system set to bring rain and sierra snow tomorrow and for monday. we'll get two days of rain and two days of snow. let's talk about what's happening now. the temperatures are cold, in the 30s and 40s for the most

part. 36 degrees in the north bay. 40s for the rest of the bay area. we have sunshine this morning and that will continue into this afternoon. we're talking about full sun for su south bay. it's going to be cool at the coast. 65 expected for san francisco. if you're doing any traveling to yosemite park it will be 40. mild nice and warm across the desert southwest. 82 for palm springs and rain making in through parts of california. there's the storm system. it's bringing rain to places like seattle and portland this morning. this storm system it's not as strong as the last storm system that moved through last week. sunday and monday when we had the rain we got up to an inch to two inches. not expecting that much this go around. we're expecting at least a quarter of an inch. tomorrow morning, 5:00 you'll

notice the first showers. the main push will come around the middle part of the day. this is 2:00 in the afternoon tomorrow. and then it dries out for tomorrow afternoon. with another shot of rain for monday. here is the amount of rain we're expecting from the first batch of showers for tomorrow. maybe .1 of an inch, .25 of an inch. that looks to be some of the higher amounts. we'll keep tracking that. it does look like every computer model is tracking rain for tomorrow into monday. same for the snow. we're talking not as much snow as the last go around. we're expecting two inches down towards kirkwood. enough to at least give a nice coating to what we saw earlier this week. it does stay chilly over the next couple of days. temperatures will go back into the 50s at the coastline. the inland valleys go back to the 60s. low 60s for monday. that's when the core of the system will move over head. same deal for the coast line,

fishermen's wharf. these are all familiar sites for tommy sincadda. >> he could be cleaning fish. >> reporter: his grandfather founded the fishing shed on the wharf. he grew up learning the family business. when the vietnam war came, the 18-year-old enlisted in the marines. >> he went out and just signed up one day and came home and told us. >> reporter: before he left for vietnam in 1968. he braced his mother for what was ahead. >> he got me aside on two different occasions and said i want you to know that i will not be coming back. >> reporter: his prophecy would sadly come true. less than a year after arriving in vietnam he was killed while protecting fellow soldiers. a condolence letter broke the news of his death back home even before the military could.

>> how many of us live our lives never doing what we really want to do? if he was willing to do it and give his life for it, who am i to say anything? >> reporter: for decades san francisco remembered veterans like sincadda with a veteran's parade down market street. this year for the first time in the city's history the parade will instead march past the fish and crab stands of fishermen's wharf. >> for years the parade has been going down market street. unfortunately there are -- most of the time the streets are empty. >> parade organizer and vietnam veteran hopes by moving the parade across town it will generate a bigger audience. a bigger show of respect for veterans of all wars. >> back in those days they were vilified. >> reporter: in its first run on the parade this year's parade will pay a special child to sincadda. >> it's lovely, this is where he

outside. this is the snowy scene in truckee. if you're on your way up this weekend, this is what you should expect. much needed snow thanks to the recent snow. it looks like it will be a great opening weekend there. mount rose is open for ski season. back here in the bay area, good morning to you thanks for joining us. anthony, you say there's more snow expected this weekend? and here, rain. >> yes, we'll get rain tomorrow starting in the early part of the day. they're expecting more snow across parts of the sierra. not as much snow as last go around. higher elevations will see higher amounts, near six inches. last week we had 19 inches at the summit. not as big a storm system. none the less adding to our tally as far as the reservoirs go. you'll notice temperatures back into the 30s and 40s. it's chilly this morning but it

is sunny. 70 for the north bay. 65 for san francisco. low 70s for tri valley and south bay. as i mentioned showers do return tomorrow. in fact, this time tomorrow morning we'll be waking up to rain. i'll time that out coming up in my next report. now to our top stories. crab season is being delayed indefinitely. the fish and wild life department says the seafood is too toxic to eat. an algae bloom has raised naturally occurring toxin levels, making them dangerous to eat. this means the commercial crab season for dungeinous crab is delayed. experts expect prices to rise as much as $6 a pound. you're looking at a wanted how many times suspect. detectives say 23-year-old warren morrison gunned down a man two weeks ago in east palo

alto. they're turning to the community to track down this suspect. police think he's still in the bay area and they've issued a $5 million arrest warrant. he should be considered armed and dangerous. and three tsa agents charged with smuggling drugs through san francisco airport security could face up to life behind bars. documents jeust unseattlled say man and woman would look the other way while others smuggled cocaine through. one of the suspects is back in court this monday. airport security is being tightened on u.s. bound flights from the middle east after that russian plane crashed in egypt. investigators believe there was indeed a bomb on board. french media is reporting an explosion could be heard in the plane's black boxes. before that there were no technical failures. isis is taking responsibility for last saturday's crash.

the department of homeland security announced screening measures will be ramped up at nearly ten airports in the middle east. >> while we can't rule anything in or out, we have to consider the possibility that a potential terrorist involvement. >> in response to the black box data, russia is suspending all flights to and from egypt. it's a meeting decades in the making. today, the leaders of taiwan and china met for the first time in more than 66 years. it's the first top level contact between the countries since they split in 1949. the two leaders shook hands and smiled in front of journalists at a hotel in singapore. both men said the meeting was to promote peace. both sides no agreements nor joint statements will be made. after years of protests and heated debates, president obama shot down the keystone pipeline

project with a ten minute speech. he does not believe it serves the country's best interest. the 1,200 pipe line would transport canadian oil to u.s. refineries. republicans including paul ryan say the pipe line would have added thousands of jobs. the obama administration says those jobs would have been temporary and once the construction was over, the pipeline would have employed 35 people. if you have not heard implosion plans have been put on hold for the eastern span of the bay bridge. originally they planned to take down the structure this weekend. they took a second look and decided some material used for the implosion did not meet their specifications. so now the implosion is expected to take place next saturday. city workers are taking extra precautions to keep commuters safe. chp will be doing rolling traffic breaks across the

bridge. and bart service to san francisco will be temporarily shut down. this morning, the search is on for more victims after richmond police arrests this child abuse suspect. he is accused of sexually assaulting young boys. he allegedly targeted overwhelmed parents and presented himself as a mentor. child abuse investigators are turning a familiar friend into a tool to help convict child predators. specially trained police dogs can sniff out electronic devices like hidden hard drives containing child porn. nbc's jeff rosen shows us how crucial these dogs are in high profile cases. >> reporter: meet bear, a rescue dog. but he isn't just the family pet. he's also a highly skilled crime

fighter. one of just four elite dogs in the country who can sniff out electronics. bear even helping to bring down subway pitch man jared fogal. the search included bringing in this k-9. he found devices crime scene detectives missed. he pled guilty and will be sentenced later this month. >> how does this work? >> electronic devices emit a chemical signature or an odor. >> reporter: even when my personal laptop is off you're saying it's still emitting an odor. >> yes. >> reporter: if i hid stuff inside this house, he'll find it? >> absolutely. >> reporter: we're inside the house all by ourselves. we're going to try this out. i have a pile of electronic equipment here, including my personal laptop. this is my personal iphone. we have a hard drive here, an ipad. couple of sd cards. you'd find this in your camera, and a thumb drive. we'll start here in the dining room. going to pick the rug up here

upstairs. shoving his nose underneath the cushion. a hit. >> wedged underneath the arm rest was a thumb drive. >> reporter: at the book shelf bear gets confused. >> he's hitting on the actual sony play station. i'm not seeing anything else hidden there. >> reporter: then ripping apart these board games. he's close. then gets it. >> in here is a usb external hard drive. >> reporter: bear quickly uncovered my laptop and he's running to my bedroom. incredibly, he finds this sd card i hid inside the piano then finds an ipad in the laundry basket. there is still one item left. i hit my personal efine. will he find that too? >> wedged between the books here is a cell phone. >> reporter: all my electronics now in police custody. if i was a real suspect, i'd be busted.

moving in ahead of the storm system. tomorrow we'll see showers for the north bay and light rain developing down towards the east by the way. it's not until lunchtime we start to see things ramp up. thunderstorms develop across the south bay. the rain activity will move into the sierra. snow will fall around 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. that will continue through the overnight hours. monday morning, the system starts to pull out of here but we'll still hang on to the threat for thunderstorms through monday afternoon. we're just getting going. and things really haven't started right now. tomorrow at this time we'll start to see the rain fall. tomorrow evening we'll tally up a .25 inch. even at the coast line we're expecting a .25. snow amounts not going to be as high the last storm system we saw on monday. we had a foot of snow across some of the ski resorts. we're not expecting that much this go around.

questions, bbva offered a $1,500 check. something her dad accepted. >> the middle of the ocean is a place where a lot of things can go wrong. as i unfortunately discovered and we need to be able to have a better response to that. >> an estimated 23 million passengers are expected to hit the high seas. because there's no central data base it's difficult to find information on how many injuries or deaths happen. something lawmakers are trying to change. >> in spite of the evidence that crimes, fires mechanical happening and medical emergencies occur wion cruise ships. >> the senator introduced the cruise passenger protection act but it never made it to a vote. a similar bill is now working its way through congress.

>> oh, boy. that four second clip is from the upcoming star wars movie. the scene surfaced yesterday in the new star wars trailer released in japan. it has more shots of the field and the rollingdroid bb 8. why did japan get the exclusive trailers? apparently they are big movie watchers. star wars, the force awakens opened in the u.s. on december 18th. and it's a case of mistaken identity. his own identity. this is goliath. he's an eight week old calf who was rescued by a danville family. he thinks he's a dog. the family rescued him from a nearby dairy farm when he was one day old. he's developed a friendship with the family's great dane. he's acting like a dog like eating dog food and dozing on the couch. nice life.
