shooting spree was carried out by a former jordan police officer fired. that officer committed suicide immediately after the attacks. no u.s. military were at the base. what's not clear is whether the americans were specifically targeted or whether in some kind of political attack or whether this was a personal vendetta. both u.s. and jordan has launched investigations to figure out why this happened. savannah. >> we'll keep in touch with you, nick, this morning as we learn more. >> ben carson facing intense new scrutiny on the campaign trail as the republican presidential candidates get ready for tomorrow night's debate. we're going to talk with the chairman of the rnc this morning. let's bring in peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> good morning. we're in milwaukee today ahead of tomorrow night's republican debate.

on and they decide to run on the elements of an interesting inspiring life story, are specific and pointed questions about elements of that life story appropriate? >> look, i mean i would imagine some questions are appropriate but i do believe this is a totally crazy obsession over incredible detail from 30 and 40 years ago whether it be this issue or some of the other issues highlighted earlier in the segment among other candidates. the fact is we kind of wish the media would be just as obsessed or half obsessed with hillary clinton's lies of many years. >> dr. carson is saying that he is being targeted, not vetted and if he is being vetted he says he's being vetted more severely than anyone else including barack obama who faced years of birthing questions and

hillary clinton whose faced decades of questions about her marriage, personal life, e-mails, 11 hours in a chair in front of congress just a couple of weeks ago. is he being more severely vetted than anyone else? >> yeah, but the difference is that the media is actually, they have an agenda against some of these candidates. in regard to hillary clinton, the media covers it with a wink and nod and isn't this horrible that she had to sit in a chair for 11 hours. that's the tone of the coverage of hillary clinton. it's a tone of this is silly, let's move on. where as with the republicans it's hey, can you believe that 40 years ago that happened or that hey, this credit card over here, those are things that might be interesting for a question but not an obsession. >> you're saying that hillary clinton's past is something people ought to be obsessed with. >> let's be clear here.

if ben carson has woven stories like the west point story into the fabric of his sprinterestin and life inspiring story, doesn't it make it fair game for questions? >> sure. people ask the question and he answered it. so i mean i think, okay, ask and answered. i think people need to move on to the next question. i'm not saying questions aren't appropriate, of course. people can't ask questions, of course. i think you get to a place where all the questions have been asked. >> real, real quickly, i know you wrote a letter to the chairman of nbc news, there were a lot of questions and criticism about the tone and debate and future debates. i know you've spoken to the chairman of nbc news, are you making progress in terms of renewing ties with this network on future debates? >> look, here's the issue. this is an issue in regard to cnbc.

disturbing video. this shows a palestinian woman attacking a security guard in the west bank. the guard was checking the woman's i.d. when she pulled out a knife and lunged at him. the guard suffered minor injuries but was able to shoot and injure that woman. this is the latest incident in a wave of violence in that region where 11 israelis and more th palestinians have died in the past few months. >> this morning officials are growing more confident it was a bomb that took down a jet. bill is on the story for us this morning. bill, good morning. where does the investigation stand? >> reporter: good morning, savannah, egypt seems to be denying this morning this was an inside job. it's under such pressure to find the cause of this crash that it has been describing one report that investigators are 90% sure this was a bomb as an outright lie. it says there's an intelligent

by pulling them out of van some using their own water to help put out the fire. >> some came out of their house with a hose. >> authorities say six children and eight adults were transit ported to area hospitals. four adults and four children were in critical condition. >> any time you deal with children and fatalities and serious injuries, it does effect the firefighters and medics and police officers. >> fire officials say the adults in the van were mostly in their 20s and 30s. children ranged in age from 4-10 years old. >> cameron, thank you. so difficult. officials in texas are on edge after a district judge was shot in her driveway in what police believe was a targeted attack. the shooter on the loose this morning. nbc has the story from austin. janet, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. nbc news has learned the judge has previously received threats over tapes in which she was a presiding judge. this morning investigators and

port officials are pouring over hundreds of our cases hoping it will provide some clue as to whomever tried to take her life. >> new urgency this morning as austin police step up their man hunt searching this neighborhood looking for whomever took four shots at the district judge in the driveway of her home. >> four gunshots. very quick succession. no spacing. bang, bang, bang. >> was it a targeted attack? authorities are calling to hundreds of felony cases trying to identify who might monitor. other judges are shaking. >> there has been a greater awareness. everybody's paying better attention. >> she was returning home from a high school football game according to the american statesman newspaper. a bag of trash or garbage can

had been placed in front of the security gate requiring the driver of her car to stop the vehicle to remove it. it was at that time she was shot. >> per caller, the assailant has left but they do not know where they are. >> it was a close call. law enforcement officials say the judge was wounded in the upper body and face area but by shrapnel and glass. her injuries are serious but not life threatening. she has more felony cases. she's rational, reasonable and fair. >> if you thought about someone being very upset with a judge, she's not the type judge you would think. >> reporter: officials have released no suspect description and in fact been very tight lipped about the investigation. meanwhile, here in aus ten, a heightened since of concern over security in the judicial community. matt and savannah. >> i can imagine a lot there.

>> we are back at 7:44. this morning on "rossen reports" a dangerous trend. >> this morning jeff rossen is here with a powerful and personal experiment. >> reporter: good morning to you. i talk about dangerous behavior all the time and i stand here and call people out when they are wrong. well, this morning something a little different. i am calling myself out. just a couple of weeks ago i was doing a story about a different unrelated topic involving my kids. i showed this picture. we're going to call it up right here of my kids right here on the "today" show. there is that photo. my kids love trains so i often took them down to the train tracks to take photos. well, just minutes after the story aired i was bombarded by e-mails, tweets and facebook messages telling me how dangerous it is, how could i, people die this way. to be honest. i never thought about it. always thought that i would see a train coming. i mean, it is a train after all, but, still, i looked into it and

boy was i wrong. this morning a game-changer for you and for me. you're watching an emergency in progress. they are recording on the tracks and suddenly notice a train. they run for safety, but it's too late. this woman is killed. just weeks ago 16-year-old john was hit and killed, taking these photos with his girlfriend for a school project. >> was too late before they realized the train was coming. >> but this may be the most haunting photo of all. two sisters and their best friend taking selfies on the tracks. what they can't see or hear is that train in the background speeding toward them. just three seconds later all the girls were hit and killed. >> this is absolutely a preventable phenomenon and loss. my girls did not have to lose

their life. >> reporter: it's one of the latest trends in photography. people taking selfies, wedding photos, even graduation pictures on active tracks. the photos posted all over social media and what most don't know it's illegal and dangerous. this year alone 291 injured, another 343 killed, trespassing on the tracks. now safety experts are sounding off. >> trains are very loud so people think they are very loud and the truth is they are relatively quiet. if an engineer sees someone on the tracks, even if they apply an emergency brake it takes a mile or more for them to stop. >> reporter: so do you think you could hear a train coming? csx railroad giving us special access to the tracks. in fact, there are csx workers just off camera here to keep us safe. there's actually a freight train on its way coming down the track all the way in the distance. i'm not sure if you can see the headlines or not. i'm going to stand here with my back to the train not paying

good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we've been tracking some strong storms moving through the bay area. as we take a look at the south bay, san jose really seeing some of the heavy downpour. a lot of lightning reports, too. but also as we take a look at the north bay, some lighter showers still continue after seeing quite a bit of rain. a close look now at san francisco, we do see it starting to clear up in some spots after some of the heavy downpours moved through. and dumped a lot of rain especially on those roads, many people trying to get to work. and looking it at the east bay, some of the bright yellows and reds there, that indicates some really heavy rain. and also some lightning strikes. we've been hearing the rumbles of thunder.

of the south and east bay, really intense heavy rain with lightning, too. and we will continue to see this moving through for at least another 30 minutes or so. where we see the bright reds and the yellows, that is where the rain is really coming down at this point at the rate of at least an inch per hour. so getting a closer look in san jose, you still have more rain on the way and you're probably wondering how long will this last. the back edge of this is moving through the south hills and getting an idea of the timing as it moves through, you will see the last round of rain right around 10:24 at allen rock. and once that moving through, you will start to see things clearing out. so a lot of lightning, heavy downpours the rest of the morning. and also some more intense rain. as we get a look at the lightning, as well, we've had a lot of flashes of lightning, but it is starting to calm down just a bit. still some flooding on those area roads as you head out this
