there and the peninsula moving without a problem, as well. pretty quiet on this friday light. breaking news that unraveled in the east bay overnight. you're looking at the scene where an alameda county sheriff's deputy opened fire. deputies say that the car chase ended and shots were fired in the middle of this neighborhood off ricardo in san lorenzo. right near interstate 880. >> bob redell is live there now. do we know why deputies opened fire, bob? >> well, sam and laura, alameda county sheriff office told us that the deputy feltd threatened. the suspect was going to run over him and his colleagues. and to the right of your screen, what you can't see, unfortunately, is ready to remove that stolen car. this happened around midnight last night and the deputies chasing the suspect and it's not clear what prompted the pursuit, whether it was a traffic violation or something else, but
5:02 am
when deputies ran the plates, they realized that the car was stolen. the chase, they tell us, lasted around five to ten minutes and stopped when the suspect drove the stolen sedan into this dead end. the sergeant tells us he then tried to turn the car around and reverse into a front yard and put it in forward and drove towards deputies. that's when the deputy fired his gun missing the suspect and his woman passenger and missing the hood. and deputies arrested both the suspects. they are interviewing right now. both are known to law enforcement, in other words, they have criminal histories, backgrounds. the man is local from the and no information on the woman. reporting live, bob redell "today in the bay." >> very fortunate no one was shot. regarding wednesday's officer-involved shooting in san francisco. a press conference held later today that could reveal more on what took place on top of st. luke's hospital. that's where police say he shot

5:32 am
>> what is running through your mind? >> this never really happens to you. >> after the deputy fired into the car, the suspect crashed that stolen vehicle into a light pole. the suspect, the driver, a man and his female passenger, a woman, were both taken into custody without incident after that. and the sheriff's office, again, reiterating the reason they fired that suspect was because he was threatening them, charging them with that vehicle. now, they did take the man and woman downtown. they have since released the woman, but the man, of course, is under arrest. they say he has a known criminal history to law enforcement and that he also had an outstanding warrant for previously evading police. he is in custody and the deputy will be put on paid administrative leave and no one was hurt during last night's confrontation. reporting live here in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to a developing story we're following overseas. this morning we're waiting to
