morning. now 35 degrees in the north bay. 47 degrees in san francisco. little bit milder there. looking at highs today warming up nicely. 70 degrees. a very comfortable in the north bay as well as the south bay. i'll show you what to expect as we head into the weekend including some rain. let's check in with anthony with a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> the metering lights are on. you guessed it, things are starting to back up here. we not only have the metering lights on, but we also have an accident just past this. i want to switch over to the maps and show you what i'm talking about. right near the treasure island off ramp and you can see things are moving slowly and a stall just past the tunnel. so, keep in mine as you approach the tunnel, things will start to slow and kind of unusual, though. because this morning usually you can go through the tunnel and things are all clear and this morning not the case. you'll want to see extra traffic because of that stall. across the rest of the bay area and across the east bay, things looking pretty good. finding a couple accidents near
6:01 am
the dumbarton bridge and things are starting to slow on the 880 but, again, else where, things are looking pretty good. sam and laura, back to you guys. >> thank you. alameda county sheriff deputies had a busy night with a car chase that ended with gunfire. this happened in san loreno on ricardo and falgren avenues. that is not very far from hayward. >> "today in the bay" bob edell live near the crash scene with more on the confrontation between deputies and the suspects. >> laura and sam. this chase ended right here in this dead end at ricardo. the suspects felt cornered, according to the alameda county sheriff's office this is where the shooting took place. you can see the retaining wall. the suspect in the backed into the wall and the deputy got out of his car and drew his gun thinking the suspect would come out of the car. that's when according to the sheriff's office that suspect charged the deputy. the deputy unleashed several
6:02 am
shots. the suspect ended up crashing into this telephone pole right here and was taken into custody. >> he's driving the car right at you. when you're driving a car at somebody, that's what's going to happen. you drive a car as law enforcement is a very good chance you're going to get shot at. >> now as a wrecker drove off with the stolen car, we were able to see where those bullets struck. they struck in the hood and in the windshield. the sheriff's office told us that one bullet ended up in the he headrest of the driver's seat. amazingly, none of the shots hit the suspect or his female passenger. this started at a chase around midnight last night on a street in hayward. that lasted around five to ten minutes and the deputies ran the plate and realized it was a stolen vehicle. they ended up in pursuit because the suspect cldn't pull over and ended up in this dead end and that's where you had the deputy firing on the car, taking the male passenger into custody,
6:03 am
as well as this female passenger. she has since been released, but the man, unfortunately, they know him. he's well known. he has a criminal record and he did have an outstanding warrant for evading arrest. again, he is in custody. 26-year-old man from the hayward area and that deputy with the alameda county sheriff office routine standard procedure expectedly put on paid administrative lead. bob redell, "today in the bay." 6:03 and now to a developing story overseas. so far the pentagon will notfirm if an airstrike killed jihadi john. we know an air strike targeted him in syria but a calendar terrorism expert tells nbc that there is no definitive proof that the strike was a success. he has orchestrated numerous propaganda video shows gruesome executions of westerners. washington in about 30 minutes. new details, laura, about an intense standoff in san jose during the dinner hour on thursday that is now over. turns out the wanted suspect is the same person who escaped from a bail bondsman a month ago. video of last night's three-hour standoff coming to an end around 3:00. several people were inside that house for hours as police and the s.w.a.t team swarmed the neighborhood. it all unfolded near the silver creek neighborhood in east san jose. police say they tracked that suspect to the and then he barricaded himself inside. we now know that suspect is the same person wanted for breaking free from his handcuffs and escaping from a bail bondsman just yards from the jail. his escape led to a massive manhunt in downtown san jose last month. we know he is linked to a burglary that we reported on last month. the man ransacked a san jose house while the woman was standing on the front porch as a lookout.
6:05 am
>> this criminal off the street prevent any other burglaries and sends a strong message to anyone committing burglaries that a burglary unit although short staffed, we still have enough to go ahead and fight crime in the city of san jose. >> along with a wanted fugitive, police also arrested the woman on the right side of your screen. they say that she was the woman on the front porch who helped aid in last month's burglary. 6:05. happening now students at san jose state aring the morning camping outside in those cold temperatures. their goal is to show solidarity for the homeless. >> kris sanchez joins us live from campus. kris, this is the tenth year that they have done this. >> it is the tenth year and certainly it is meant to highlight the plight of the homeless. you know what, some of the faculty and students that slept out here got a first hand account because the folks in the yellow tent and it green tent one is homeless. one of them is recently
6:06 am
homeless. and they were able to share their first-hand accounts. now, we talked with some of them as they were setting up last night and setting in for a cold night outside. and one woman who said on the one hand it's a great tradition that is now a decade old, but on the other hand, it speaks to the fact that not enough has changed in this county. one of the affluent counties in the state. now, at least count of homeless people in santa clara county, there were 6,600 people who have no place to call home, but she says that doesn't tell the whole story of homelessness here in santa clara county. >> not just hunger, but the detriments and it's unemployment and poverty and domestic violence and a ton of things and the cystsome broken. if we don't hold our city officials accountable to make those changes, it's not goteeg happen. >> now, every year santa clara county sends out workers to get a better picture of homelessness in the county.
6:07 am
i've been digging through some of those statistics. here's some of the most interesting ones i have found. of the 6,600 people that are homeless live in san jose and unsheltered. sleeping in the streets, on tents, in cars or homeless encampments and 79 unsheltered people are children or young people under the of 18. in fact, kids and teenagers make up 9% of all homeless people ina clara county, but with 6,500 people on the streets, clearly not enough shelters for everyone. so, this is a very relevant conversation which will continue even after these folks pack up their tents and sleeping bags and go back home and there is a discussion. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> so cold out there, too. >> even more powerful thing to do as kari has been talking about all morning. temperatures in the 40s. >> as we head towards sunrise,

6:09 am
across parts of the south bay, we are starting to see some slowing here across parts of 101 and, again, this is where we usually always see that slowing. take you outside and you can see what i'm talking about. things are starting and we are seeing a few less cars on the road and traffic really not moving all that bad here across 101 in san jose. back over to you guys. we'll keep you busy later this morning. if you are heading into or out of san francisco this weekend, you might run into some traffic. there is a live look right now at the bay bridge this morning where implosion plans on the old eastern span are expected to happen about 24 hours from now.
