i saw a guy wait until what looked to be a sewer. right off the bat, whoa. like this is pretty intense. and i knew i was in for a serious life-changing experience. >> faith. by definition it's something that is felt with strong convictions without tangible evidence of its existence. many claim to have it. but how do we attain it? it can't be held. it can't be sold. but it can be passed down. faith is invaluable to those who feel it.
10:01 pm
how is it that this belief can unite us regardless of our differences? it's because of conviction. that feeling inside that links so many. from the far corners of the earth to the closest reaches of our neighborhoods. faith is all around us. faith springs from a glorious past forward to a promising future. the faith that those who not so quietly defeated rivals and redefined record books would inspire their brethren of today to reach such epic accomplishments. and all along there are those who cheer. in their minds they envision. in their hearts they believe. and because of that they are simply known as -- the faithful. >> after chapel one evening some of the players came up to us and they said to me, we want to take
10:02 pm
a trip after the end of the season. so i said, okay. and in most cases players say something to you, then you sort of let it go. i thought it was the moment. i was thinking, wow, that must have been a great message for them to get that excited. well, a couple weeks later those same three guys came back and said, hey, what about the trip? i said, what trip? the trip we asked you about, we want to go. i said, you guys were serious? they said, sure. >> earl smith has been part of the 49er organization for nearly two decades. as a team pastor. his job, guide the minds and spirits of young men who represent the red and gold. but in the spring of 2015, no guidance was needed as their compasses were set on a decimated country in dire need of help. leading that navigation was third-year tight end van mcdonald. >> vance, he kind of was the guy
10:03 pm
that started it all. he asked me toward the end of the season, hey, we've always talked about doing something to help the community or doing something of great importance. he was kind of like, what about haiti? >> all my life i've tried to use my platform of football to help others. decided we wanted to do something special this offseason. we decided we wanted to try a mission trip. rolled from there and we had a lot of help from the 49ers organization. >> i contacted this organization called convoy of hope. and i said to them, hey, we have some guys that want to do a mission trip. well, the founder of convoy of hope has been a 49er fan since he was a baby. next thing we know we're talking with the rest of their staff and we have a haiti trip. why haiti? we realized it's the most impoverished country in the western hemisphere. total blight. we started to say, what can we do to make a difference?
10:04 pm
>> so it was decided. a crew of 13 people from the 49ers, including mcdonald, derek celek, and tate carodine, as well as former 49er and current washington tight end derek carrier, joined convoy of hope. their mission was simple -- help out a community in need. lending a helping hand for the 49ers isn't a new concept. as the franchise is active in their community on a regular basis. but they realized although haiti is 3,500 miles away from that community, it demanded their attention, blood, and sweat. >> so we've been here a couple of days.
10:05 pm
we've been to an orphanage, we've been to a farm, we've been to schools. >> you come here, the promise of something that's so simple. look at everyone smiling. it's amazing to see it firsthand, come over here and get to experience it. i'm being grabbed every which way. it's amazing. >> being able to be around a kid, see the excitement on their face, making them happy on days like that. i've seen the kind of stuff they go through, i've seen how they live. i realize they could use a lot of help and i'd be more than fortunate to help them. >> to be able to be here and be around this, it's life-changing for myself and for my teammates and our wives that are here with us. if you look around, you see these kids and where they are and how happy they are. i mean, i can't even -- i can't even describe it.
10:06 pm
>> when i was watching the players, you think about vance mcdonald and the long flowing hair and this big bulky guy. then all of a sudden a kid jumps in his arms. he picks up one, then another kid says, he has another arm, maybe i'll jump on it too, he has two now. a third kid tries to figure out, maybe he could get me. >> a human jungle gym. at the orphanage, he probably had four children crawling on him at one time. one on each arm, two fighting to get up on those arms. it was funny watching vance try to fight off the kids. >> they wouldn't let him go, everywhere he went they were holding on to him. i seen the attachment the kids had, like they didn't want to leave him. you could tell how excited he was to be with the kids. >> after all the noise died down, they sat playing dominos. tank walked over and acted like he owned the table and the kids
10:07 pm
cleared him out. he lost every game. it was so funny because he had so much confidence going in. >> tank had a competition to see how many kids could curl on each arm. >> just to see him around kids, the smile he had on his face, just really cool. great, fun experience for us as teammates. >> yeah, there was a baby there that he was holding. wouldn't put it down. everywhere he took the baby with him. you could tell when he put the baby down the baby ran to him wherever he went. >> hold on this baby les. 11 years old. port-au-prince. >> garrett was running this kicking station. and the kids obviously just didn't care to punt the ball he was supposed to punt. kids were throwing the ball on the ground and they'd turn it into a soccer game. he p his hands up, all right, whatever. started running with it. >> oh my god, my arms are so tired. >> probably had this 8, 9-foot
10:08 pm
pole, and derek was over there just pushing kids up to the hop. i was looking over and he was shaking his head. he wasn't shaking his head because he was disappointed or upset. he was just like -- his arms were so beat and so sore because he had picked up, i don't know, the 100th kid in a row to put on top of the thing. >> despite the impoverished conditions, smiles prevailed. the haitian children brought out the inner kid in all the players. while inside the wives and girlfriends who accompanied the group held an impromptu class with some willing students. both groups enjoyed laughs and surprises. but the biggest surprise was capped by an unexpected yet completely familiar bit of clothing. >> seeing the boy wearing the 49ers hat was special. it's funny too. we asked him, you know what you're wearing? he had no idea. he had a chance to shake our hands and take pictures with us. that really made his day.
10:09 pm
>> he had no idea that there was a group of people from the 49ers down there. when he found out and they told him he was like so excited. like the look on his face. he couldn't believe it. >> these are the people whose team cap you're wearing. >> you can go on there, touch someone's heart, you know. touch a kid's heart. let them know that they're still important. let you know there's still hope for the deeps that they want to, do things they want to become. >> they just kind of brought the whole thing together. it's almost that kind of divine presence kind of feel to it that just -- we knew that what we were doing there is what we needed to be doing. it was a great moment.
10:12 pm
the nfl and more specifically the 49ers are known worldwide. and san francisco's effort in the community reflect just that. the team has sent a delegation to haiti, hosted play 60 event in the uk, and continues to sponsor its school in new orleans. but all along they have never forgotten about the place they call home. >> all nfl teams are involved in the community and all are involved in different ways. here at the 49ers, it's a commitment from the very top all the way throughout the organization. they put this as a priority, it's very important to them.
10:13 pm
as a result each of the last four years our players have participated at the 100% level at one or more community events. many of our players are showing up week after week. it's a tremendous testament to the philanthropic outreach efforts of the 49ers that our guides show us each week. >> the 49ers foundation, every week they're in the community doing work. for example, at a hospital with kids a couple of weeks ago. we went up to a hospital where kids had cancer and they missed their prom. so we joined up and we got to dance with the kids a little bit, take some photos. it's little things like that that they do day in and day out that just changes the world around us. >> all the different things we do throughout the year, it's a tribute to the community relations department. the 49ers in general, the owners. huge praise and tip of the hat to them. to be in this position, first off, and to have so much. but at the same time caring
10:14 pm
enough to give back. there are plenty of people here in the bay area that need it. we do anything and everything i can imagine. going to hospitals. going to cafeterias to feed homeless. it's anything. seeing kids. it's awesome. awesome being able to give back, since we've been given so much. >> we do approximately 50 events a year. many of those are involving a large number of players. most are smaller events where we're really trying to make an impact. we have given over the history of the 49ers foundation over $30 million to support nonprofits in the bay area. >> i think that's something that people don't realize. that every week we have players doing something in the community. and the thing i love about it is they're not doing it for publicity, they're not doing it so there's a news article out about it. they're not doing it so someone can say, look at those niner players. they're doing it because there's a compassionate side that says, what can i do, what can i offer in terms of who i am to make someone feel better about who
10:15 pm
they are. that's what going to haiti is about. it's also what we do on a regular basis. so many people know a player's name, they know their jersey number. but they never get to know the player. through experiences like this they get to know the player. >> a lot of guys get involved in communities where they grew up. but i also think it's important to get involved in the communities where you may. i think people need to see your face. people need to see you supporting their community. those are the people that cheer for you. those are the people that make your job possible. so i think it's very important for us as an orgt to get out in the community, get involved in the lives of the people in the community. there's a lot of people that cheer for us or buy our jer ises. a lot of those people will never get a chance to come to a 49ers game or get that one-on-one interaction with an nfl player. i think it's important to be tangible in the community. >> anquan boldin, like his teammates, takes being tangible in the community seriously.
10:16 pm
whether signing autographs after practice, giving their gloves to a kid after games, or hosting a yearly fund-raiser. boldin and his teammates want the faithful to know they are appreciative of their support. >> i started the anquan boldin foundation in my second year in the nfl. it's always something that's been near and dear to me. i come from a less fortunate area. it's always been a dream of mine to one day make it big and give back to those that were in the same situation. i know i didn't get to where i am today on my own. i had a lot of help, a lot of people that steered me in the right direction. helped me out financially as well. i think it's only right that i do the same thing. >> boldin's contributions have not gone unnoticed. last year he was recognized as one of the three finalists for the walter payton nfl man of the year award presented by the league for excellence both on the field and in the community.
10:17 pm
>> finding out i was a finalist for the man of the year award was exciting. i speak for others, we don't do it for the notoriety, we do it because it's in our heart and we want to give back. >> when we're giving we look at the long-term impacts of how we give. it's not just a check, it's not just a photo op. for us we're all-in, all-in in a way that will make a difference.
10:20 pm
49ers cochairman dr. yoric has a saying -- every sunday in the fall we do everything we can to win. all year long we do everything we can to support our community. that same spirit is embodied in the men who don the red and gold. last year, every single 49er player voluntarily participated in community events.
10:21 pm
donating their time to bay area youth in need. but their efforts were not confined to just the bay area. so in late march members of the 49ers family made the trek some 3,500 miles to port-au-prince, haiti, a community profoundly in need. for a profoundly unforgettable experience. >> first traveling to haiti, nothing really prepares you for the experience until you actually get there. it was hard to watch. you felt the hurt, you felt the pain. i can't imagine anything like that happening in my lave. trying to put myself in their shoes is something that's incredible. >> i knew it was going to be a rundown country. i knew there was going to be some serious problems. to see it firsthand, that's the only way you'll ever get a true understanding of what's going on. >> it was just a life lesson to let me know how blessed we are being able to wake up, have what i have, being able to do the things i do, being able to help people. >> something as simple as drinking a bottle of water is --
10:22 pm
is incredible. taking a shower. getting three meals a day. very lucky to have that. i know now that i can help with haiti and around the world. >> to see people living like that is something that will stick with you, make you want to give your all, let you know that, hey, i have to go help people, i love to be blessed, i have to be grateful, i have to take advantage of my opportunities, of everything i have. it lets you know how short life is and you have to keep moving forward and be the best you can be. >> these guys as they talk they said, well, you know, we have so much to be thankful for. the things that we've taken for granted, we will no longer do that. when you're dealing with a professional athlete that they finally -- they get it. they know they've been blessed. they know they've had these unbelievable opportunities, yet they didn't have the backdrop. going to haiti was the backdrop
10:23 pm
for those opportunities. >> the sobering reality of haiti was evident at every turn for the 49ers and the convoy of hope. the difficult living conditions and lack of resources were tangible. however, after spending time in port-au-prince, what became evident were the intangibles. the faith and joy of its residents. and although unable to be touched physically, nonetheless, that faith and joy touched the hearts of those who made the trip. >> when i first came into contact with them and talked with the kids, just to see how happy they were really kind of opened my eyes. >> being here we're spoiled. over there they have one basketball for 75 kids. one pack of crayons. they don't even have paper sometimes to draw on. yet they carry themselves with such joy. it's just contagious. >> we would look at it and say, poor them. but they have learned to exist, they've learned to eat one meal a day, they've learned to do
10:24 pm
things that we say we can't do. and it's become part of who they are. >> we went there to think that we were going to be the ones helping them. and in in the long run they probably helped us way more than they'll ever understand. they were just an inspiration to me. i can probably speak for the rest of the team that went. >> when i go back home i'm going to be an advocate in the states for these young guys and ladies, try to gather as much support as i can for their cause and to help them. being here firsthand, seeing how desperate these situations are, is going to be something big. >> to go back home and remember this experience and just be an advocate to share what i've seen here. just the impact that everyone had. we truly can come together and make a difference for people. >> beautiful country. beautiful people. i'm glad i had this chance to live with them for the past couple of days.

members of the faithful. as you can see we love telling a good story. trust to us share yours by reaching out to 49ers studio, fns@49ers.com. the question that i had for everyone is what can we do to get everyone involved? we can't feed everyone but what are you going to do? >> i encourage anyone to go down and give back for a week, four days, three days, whatever it may be. just seeing that, it's just powerful. >> really i challenge my

what it will take to get the silver and black back on track. >> really put our team in a bad spot all night. >> speaking of skids. peyton manning benched. shortly after making nfl history. why his days as an elite passer are behind him. we'll tell you if a little rest and a new quarterback can help the 49ers solve the seahawks. "sports sunday" coming at you now.

oakland raiders at home taking on the minnesota vikings in a game many thought the raiders would win. second quarter, raiders down 13-0. carr to walford, 10-yard touchdown, raiders are on the board. >> basically a seven route. and it's great concentration getting his feet in. great job bit rookie. >> later in the quarter carr connects with andre holmes, raiders take their first lead of the game. we'll spot shadow michael crabtree, how did he know this was a touchdown? >> you saw him wide open. i tell you what, the corner was closing on him fast. a great throw, great concentration. unbelievable. a turning point in the second
10:32 pm
half. >> in the ensuing kickoff, cordarrelle patterson bobbles it and he's gone. talk about another momentum shifter. >> you're not kidding. they went from being ahead momentum their way to all of a sudden momentum goes right back to the vikings. >> vikings up 20-14 at the half in crunch time. carr trying to get off a play before the two-minute warning. terence newman picks him off. >> he just underthrew it about a foot. >> ensuing possession all day, adrian peterson. breaks a tackle and he's gone. 80-yard touchdown. finished with 203 on the ground. the raiders hughes to the vikings 30-14. so let's go inside the numbers brought to you by nissan. the raiders defense with issues a week after the series, deangelo williams rushed for 170, peterson goes over 200. carr threw over 300 but he had two costly interceptions. 4-5, under .500 for the first
10:33 pm
time since week five. >> it's not always going to be pretty. it's not always going to be flashy. sometimes we're going to have to grind it out kind of a deal. we're learning that as we grow. but we're very confident. there's not a lack of confidence from player to player, player to coach. none of that. so that's how i know that we're a good football team. >> we find ourselves coming in today at .500. we're still a lot at stake for this football team. we've got to go out and win games. and in order for us to get where we want to go at the end of the season, we've got to win these games. >> it's a disappointing loss. i'm glad we've still got seven games left. it's going to be a learning process. we're going to get back this week and we're going to learn from this and we're going to get better. >> carr's been fantastic. but a couple of costly mistakes today. is that the difference? >> absolutely. it's a turnover battle. when you lose the turnover
10:34 pm
battle in the nfl, you usually lose the game. >> you said carr's got to be good for them to win. carr makes a couple of mistakes they probably don't win. >> they're not good enough right now on defense to overcome his mistakes. that gets him to where he's got to play perfect football but he's not perfect yet. >> what did you see from him before the game that you thought was interesting? >> down on the sideline, what i saw was him before the game going to try to get the crowd excited. and i just felt like that was something that should come from a linebacker. a defensive lineman. a defensive guy. and i'm like, i want my quarterback to get the crowd fired up by his play out on the field. not trying to get them fired up before the game. >> you want a linebacker to do that? >> absolutely. >> not a quarterback, a
10:35 pm
linebacker named romo. player of the day, adrian peterson, six-time peterson has rushed over 200 yards in a game, tied with o.j. simpson for most in the nfl. what has happened to the run defense the last two weeks? deangelo williams, adrian peterson. >> last week they were throwing so well, that opened up the pass. today it's not like they were lightening it up throwing the football. they lit it up running the football. they had one guy to beat in this football game and that was adrian peterson. if you beat him, you beat the minnesota vikings. they didn't get that done today. >> the run defense, poor the last two weeks. do you still have confidence that that is a strong part of this team's unit, the run defense? and these two weeks are an aberration and not the rule, more the exception? >> i hope so. i hope so. i have faith in the team. i know jack del rio, being a
10:36 pm
defensive guy, somehow, some way, they've got to figure it out. what i didn't see today, i didn't see a sense of urgency. and that i think is what hurts me so badly is i want to see guys flying around playing intense, hard-nosed football. especially on defense. i want them to win in the trenches. this was a nine on seven game. you knew they were going to pound the football because that's what the vikings do, they pound the football, then they go play action pass. well, when they were pounding the football, we weren't ready for it. and that was disheartening. >> they shouldn't have been surprised, right? everyone knows what the vikings do. next on "xfinity sports sunday," on the day peyton manning became the nfl's all-time leading passer, unceremoniously benched. we'll discuss if manning's era has come to an end. plus with the 49ers on a much-needed bye week, their week
10:37 pm
10:40 pm
denver's second straight loss. after the game peyton manning, what do you have? >> made really bad plays, put our team in a bad position. starting with the first series, turning the ball over. giving them great field position. just seemed like -- got me off to a bad start and never could find any type of rhythm or continuity out there. really put our team in a bad spot all night. >> "toyota red zone report." pavement, he has not been protective of the football. 17 interceptions. that leads the entire nfl. andrew luck also a great quarterback not having a great season with 12 picks. banning becomes the nfl's all-time leading passer, four
10:41 pm
picks and he's benched. is this the end of the manning era or just a weak setback? >> not yet. but it is a weak setback. but it's amazing how humbling the nfl can be to even some of the greatest players to ever play the game. and that's him. they went up against a chiefs defense that was on fire. he had time to throw the football. you can't give him that excuse, that the defensive line was in his face, he had time. the offensive line did their jobs. he was off in a bad way. >> at the bears do you start pavement? >> you have to start pavement. peyton manning. if you're going to make any kind of run, you're in the lead in the division, if you're going to make any kind of run you've got to get peyton back on track. >> talk about the afc standings.
10:42 pm
is this an opening? is this -- is denver now suddenly vulnerable? >> absolutely. i think they've been vulnerable this whole year. they just have been pulling games out by playing really good defense. >> all right. now, in the nfc, we had a huge nfc west game. >> yes. >> cardinals at seahawks. we know the seahawks are going to host the 49ers next week. fourth quarter, seahawks are down only two after trailing by 19. carson palmer is stripped. bobby wagner scoops up the fumble and scores. and the seahawks take the lead. next cardinals possession. palmer hits jermaine grisholm in the back of the end zone. third and 4, andre ellington went left, and then tiptoes down the sideline. 48-yard touchdown run. cardinals are winners 39-32.
10:43 pm
so the nfc west standings look like this. arizona the clear front-runner right now, 7-2. 2-1 in the division. san francisco is 3-6. san francisco will next play at seattle after getting much-needed bye week. blaine gabbert threw two touchdowns last week. but he also threw two picks. one wasn't his fault. did that change at quarterback? benching their quarterback, colin kaepernick, did that rejuvenate this team? >> it did, it brought a new energy to the field. it brought a new energy to the coaches, to the stadium, to the players. everybody got up for gabbert. and whether that can continue, i don't know. i hope it does. because i was happy to see the 49ers get back on track. >> gabbert came in and, look, he was picked tenth overall, kaep went much later.
10:44 pm
he was terrible in jacksonville. were you able to see anything where you said, okay, he didn't maybe -- maybe wasn't great but didn't cost them. were you able to say anything where you said, there's a lot of potential with this guy? >> what i saw is he didn't lose the game for you. he didn't necessarily win. i thought everybody -- i thought the team as a whole played well. they all played well. they rose to the occasion. and they had to get a win. and they needed it badly. they've been getting beat up and they had to get that win. they got it. but he didn't lose the game for them and he didn't win the game for them. >> they needed it very badly because they'd been getting beat up in seattle all the time. it's a terrible place for them to play. and now arizona won today in seattle. and the 49ers got to go to a place where since 2010 they're 1-5 and they're only scoring 11 points a game and giving up 26.5. can the 49ers and blaine gabbert win in arguably the loudest stadium in the nfl?
10:45 pm
>> seattle's offense has been struggling. their defense is as good as it's ever been. but they used to get a lot more help from their offense. but their offensive line isn't as dominant as they used to be. and because of that, they are struggling offensively. >> so winning there is not maybe as monumentous a task as it once was? >> i think they can get it done, i really do. still up on "xfinity sports sunday." an instant classic. the undefeated patriots barely squeaking by. and we'll tell you which of the remaining perfect teams is most likely to stay that way. bill will weigh in on that.
10:47 pm
10:48 pm
so's rob gronkowski. gronk breaks a tackle. two giants collide. 76-yard touchdown. patriots take the lead. two minutes left, giant in the red zone. eli manning's pass to odell beckham jr. caught in the end zone then knocked away. refs call it a touchdown on the field. it would be reviewed and overturned. no touchdown. did you agree? >> that looked like a touchdown to me. caught it, came down with the ball. tough to interpret these rules. 6 seconds left, gostkowski, field goal. patriots stay perfect. who is most likely to stay perfect? new england, cincinnati, or carolina? >> i just look at who they're playing. new england has the bills, the broncos, the eagles. i like that setup for new england. cincy has texans. after that they have the cardinals and the rams.
10:49 pm
carolina, redskins, cowboys. so carolina could stay undefeated in new england. but i think cincy's going to have a hard time. >> all three of these undefeateds have something in common, great quarterback play. all three have great quarterback play. brady did make a costly mistake today. tom coughlin was like, we should have won this game. all three of these undefeated teams have quarterbacks that are god under pressure and are playing great. >> andy dalton is the big surprise to me. the way he has played. i think hugh jackson has had a really big impact on him. but brady is brady. he's doing his thing. cam newton, they play really good defense around him. and they have a real weak schedule. so they have an advantage there. >> you don't see any of these three teams running the tables and being perfect, do you? >> i can see new england running the table. >> really? >> i do. >> and finishing off a perfect
10:50 pm
season here at levi's? >> you know what it is, brady is playing with such an intensity. and it's weird to say as a quarterback that a quarterback is playing with intensity. he's playing with an intensity like a linebacker. that's -- they're so well-coached at every phase of the game. it's fun to watch. >> brady grew up in san mateo. do you think he's going to be in santa clara for super bowl 50? do you think one of these three teams will be there? >> new england will be there. >> they're going to the super bowl? >> i think so. that's my pick now. a lot of people would agree. next on "xfinity sports sunday," the raiders are skidding and they can't expect any help from the lowly lions after detroit bounced aaron rodgers.
10:53 pm
our kings of the week. play weekly fantasy football and win huge cash prizes. go to draftkings.com. do it now. kirk cousins has got your 28 points as washington looked pretty good. jeremy langford 30 points. and antonio brown, all he does is get two points. he gave you 27. all right. back to the oakland raiders. dave roman with bill romanowski. he knows about winning. raiders are in detroit next week as we look at the tale of the tape, though. how did the oakland raiders match up with detroit, a team that has struggled? they only have a couple of wins. >> on paper, you look at it, oakland has to win this football game there is no way that the detroit lions can beat the oakland raiders. it come downs to the oakland raider have, to play their
10:54 pm
games. they have to play oakland raider football. they got to go out there like they own that dome. there is a feeling you get when they walk out on to the field. and i had it earlier in the season. right now i don't have it. there is something about the energy of listening to the guys after the game that really -- i don't know what it is, but there is an energy about how they talked. they felt yeah, they got beat. but it was more like they were defeated as a team, as guys. and it's one thing to get beat. but it's another thing to be defeated because that -- that's a bug that can last. that can infect the locker room. and i don't want that to infect the raider locker room. >> do they follow the lead of their quarterback? is he the guy who has to set the tone, bill, on whether you feel

defeated or not? >> he is the leader. he is the leader of this football team. when derek carr plays lights out football, they win. he has been really good this year. but they have to be able to stop the defense. they're not doing it. >> you said he makes a couple of costly mistakes. when they do that, he can't win. does he have what it takes to be talent wise in the league, quarterback? >> he does. he's got to have the other pieces, which he does. he has two refers in crabtree and amari cooper that are playing, you know, probably some of the best football of any two receivers in the national football league. they're playing that well. and he is playing that well. now you got to add a tight end. you got to get a tight end into the mix consistently and keep that offensive line protecting him. >> i said does he have what it takes to be elite, would you argue elite already? he is putting up very good

numbers. >> great numbers. but to me, numbers can sometimes lie. and i say this. the denver game. you know. you throw a costly interception. when the game son the line, you need to be great. an that's the next step for derek carr is when the game is on the line. and he has won some games for us. but now it's -- he's got to win games against a really good football team, and take the raiders down the field and just win the game for them. >> raiders are now below 500 for the first time since week five this season. i ask you right now. is this a play-off team? >> they are. they are a play-off team. but they have to decide they want it bad enough. they have to play a sense of urgency. they have to play with an energy and a passion. and they haven't done that in a

couple of weeks now. and they've got to get it back. >> and you think it's something that they can get back? >> i absolutely do. and that's where the head coach comes in. jack del rio has got to be a psychologist. you know, the great coaches in the national football league really are great psychologists. because they have to get 53 guys moving in the same direction mentally. they're all physically capable. they're all great athletes. but it's the head that separates the good from the great. and right now they're a good football team. decent to good football team. but we all want them to be great. >> you played for a lot of great coaches. we were talk before this show. mike shanahan was a great coach. he won a couple of super bowls. >> bill walsh. >> george seifert. i was fortunate. i was around some of the best football coaches to ever coach in the national football league. >> and you learn from them?
10:58 pm
>> absolutely. >> they're still feature you when you're a pro? >> hey, it's attention to detail. everybody has to be pushed. mike shanahan would say you're either getting better or you're getting worse. there is no in between. the raiders need to get better. >> thanks, bill. good sending a sunday with you. it was fun. bill romanowski. thanks for spending sunday with us. have a good week and be sure to watch cnn bay area all week. thanks for watching.
