a very good friday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. a lot of news to get to and a forecast to check. kari hall is joining us with the weekend forecast. >> it looks beautiful, sam and laura. warmer than average temperatures. it will probably feel weird going out to go ice skating and 75 degrees. yes, as the that's what we're in for. lower 50s as you step out now and highs today reaching the low 70s. 71 in the east bay and san francisco and 67 degrees and 75 degrees in the north bay. we'll check out that weekend forecast, but, let's see how it look at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> the toll plaza moves very well. now, we don't have a backup here, but i do have other east bay alert. look at the maps. the approach to the bay bridge is moving well here. bottom of the map and we'll zoom in west 580 and northbound 238. northbound 238 from 14th over to 880. one lane blocked and those crews

set to right now. coming up 238 and she says, yes, indeed, it's crawling as crews clear. an update to breaking news overseas. more than 100 people are being held hostage at a radisson hotel in mali. >> gunmen fired shots. "today in the bay" kris sanchez in the newsroom with the latest on this developing story. what do you know so far? >> we can tell you that the hostage situation is still ongoing as we speak but that the military response was very quick. there are reportedly soldiers inside that hotel freeing hostages floor by floor and trying to make contact with those extremists. in the first images you can see people in the street and initially we thought these folks were headed into the hotel, but we now confirm that those armed soldiers are directing those folks out of the hotel towards safety. according to the malian army commander, at least 30 people were freed by special forces and

he adds that ten hostage takers yelling "god is great" stormed the hotel with grenades. it has experience with islamic extremists because for most of 2012 the capitol city was occupied by islamic fighters. some with links to al qaeda. a french-led military operation drove them out this year. the radisson blu hotel known to be used by diplomats and also flight crews from air france. the radisson blu hotel reads that we are extremely concerned about the situation in mali and for the safety of our guests and our employees, we are in contact with authorities there. now, meanwhile, the u.s. embassy staff and u.s. citizens bamako told to shelter in place. we should mention back in october the they did issue a security alert warning a

heightened security risk outside bamako city. as we get new information as we speak, the number of freed hostages is now up to 80. again, the malian army commander says there are soldiers ined is that hotel and that at least one hotel guest leaving. reported having to recite verses from the koran before he was allowed to leave that hotel. that person released by the hostage takers, but, again, the malian army has been able to free at least 80 people. in all about 170 people. we know that at least three of them did not survive the siege on that hotel. also, we know that this is now affecting air travel. one paris to bamako flight was canceled this morning. sam and laura? >> very intense and aggressive. this is developing. we'll stay on top of this breaking news both here and online. head to nbcbayarea.com for the very latest updates. an hour's long standoff in the east bay now over. a homicide suspect was holed up

inside a motel 6 near 0.co coliseum since yesterday afternoon. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live from police headquarters. >> yeah, there was, sam. never a good indication. but we are hoping for an update from opd some time this morning. what we do know is that the scene is clear at the motel 6 near 880 and that is where there was this standoff situation. a man, a homicide suspect we're told by sources holed up inside a motel room after firing at officers. oakland s.w.a.t was out there evacuating people outside of the hotel tell. they tried to convince the suspect to exit the building. the focus was on the second floor. we know the situation is over, but still waiting to hear back from police on what exactly happened at the end there. we did see a coroner's van in the parking lot indicating someone has died. it's unclear if that someone is

a man named jason alexander brown linked to an east bay murder last month. police sources tell nbc hebertia he is the one that barricaded himself in the motel room yesterday afternoon into the late-night hours. investigators believe 18-year-old brown, an oakland resident and another man shot two men at a cvs parking lot at first street in livermore back on october 24th. one victim died and the other was severely wounded. brown is also wanted in connections with killings in sacramento and fresno. police shut down the off ramp off of 880 and, again, the scene is clear and that is all backup open. live here in oakland, stephanie chuang. >> thank you very much. 5:05 right now. this morning the obama administration is trying to release fears following the terrorist attacks that comes as congress moves forward with a plan to keep syrians out of the country. the administration says it's found no evidence of a credible terror threat here at home and

keeping kids and grandmothers out of the u.s. is an overreaction. even so, the house defied the president's passing a measure yesterday to make it even harder for refugees to come here. that measure is getting a lot of attention on the campaign trail. >> very simply, we can't take them, folks. we can't take them. we can't take them. it could be a trojan horse. >> slamming the door on every syrian refugee, that is just not who we are. >> the plan to block syrian refugees moves to the senate where leaders say it will not be considered before next month. if it passes, the president is promising a veto. meantime in pairs and around the world, these images of the attacks are still very vivid this morning. and for the first time in an nbc exclusive we're hearing from the commando who led french authorities in this week's raid. >> and then we discover like

more than maybe 7,000, 8,000 people who are laying on the floor. >> the commando only going by his first name. by the time paris s.w.a.t teams have arrived, once tear terrorists have been killed by police. jeremy knew it would be up to his team to get the remaining attackers and free the hostages. >> as soon as we opened the door, one of the terrorists shot like between 25 to 30 rounds of ak47 bullets. >> the team cornered the remaining two terrorists at the end of a hallway. one blew himself up. the second terrorist was killed before he was able to detonate. to watch more of our exclusive interview, you can head to nbcbayarea.com right there on our front page. happening today, san francisco mayor ed lee scheduled to hold a news conference later this morning to discuss pedestrian and bicyclist safety. this coming a week after that

tour bus crash in union square, which sent 20 people to the hospital. as we reported yesterday, maintenance records reveal that bus was not registered with a california public utility's commission as it is required to do by state law. the chp says a mandatory safety inspection never happened either. it's 5:08 right now. we've been experiencing some cool starts to our morning. really nice finish, though, in the afternoon. what are we in store for in the afternoon? >> even warmer temperatures today, laura. still cool this morning. stepping out it's 47. in the east bay and the north bay. and that looks better. 52 degrees. you have some freezing temperatures to start out the week. it's now in the mid-40s as we get a closer look at the south bay and 50 degrees and 53 degrees in san francisco. here's a look at all the highs today. moving into the low 70s. more widespread across the bay area. up to 68 degrees in the mission district today. and 76 in brentwood. and dublin look for a high of 74

degrees. so, we'll check out that weekend coming up. but, mike gives us a heads up before you head out the door. >> that's right, kari. give b.a.r.t. riders a heads up and one for east bay drivers. we pull out the big b.a.r.t. map a few minutes ago and updated to a 20-minute delay originating right here. the west oakland station. why that's critical is because all lines except for the richmond to fremont line travel through that station. we're now hearing about a 20-minute delay. that's considered a major delay by the b.a.r.t. station because of "equipment problems." unspecified what is going on and i don't know what to tell you how long this is going to last. no matter where you're going because of that major point of issue right there at west oakland. meanwhile, the roadways are moving well, but northbound 230 starting to recover after road crews starting to clear from the overnight work right around 14th. back to you. >> we'll follow that b.a.r.t. situation, thank you, mike. planning on going black friday shopping. why you can expect a lot of

area's tech industry breathing a sigh of releif this lots of people in the bay area's tech industry right now breathing a sigh of relief this morning after a very successful launch for square. >> scott mcgrew brought you to it as it all happened on thursday. the stock really rocketed in its first trade. >> sure did. much to the relief of anyone,

laura, who would like to see the san francisco economy continue to thrive. it was a lot of pressure to put on square and, indeed, we had our doubts, especially since the share price started far below what the company wanted. but it popped in early trading. here we see the ceos mother buying flowers. if you have the sound, you'd hear the beep of the transaction actually kicked off the ringing of the bell on wall street. the stocks did so well. shares in square jumped 45% in the first day of trading. start the day at $13.07. now there are a lot of motives, the company wants the highest ipo price possible because it's selling the stock to the public and gets to keep the money. investors want it super low because they want to buy low and sell high on the first day of trade. price it too high, though, you get no pop and you got no where to go and prices too low. the company raises less money. let's talk about the christmas toy that is going to be so

very real this holiday season. less than a week to go before thanksgiving alameda county's food bank certainly needs your help. they are short 15,000 turkeys and chickens and they're asking people to donate food or money to help them provide thanksgiving meals for more than 40,000 homes. right now one in five county residents depends on the food banks. that's well over the national average. it's just not an issue in alameda county, but really bay area wide. >> there's no question that it is. hoping this weekend will add thousands to those turkeys in need. roughly 7,000 people in the bay area. with the community food bank, good morning, good to see you, again. like groundhog day. every year, we were saying. how bad is the need this year compared to last year? has anything changed? >> food bank serving one in five county residents and maybe contact one in seven u.s. residents. the need in our area is much greater. a lot has to do with the cost of living, really difficult for low or moderate-income family to get by here. >> who are these people? >> basically everybody. we serve a lot of children and seniors. they make up most of who we and seeing a lot more now is working families. so, you could have a pretty good job and struggle to make ends meet in the bay area. i think a lot people can appreciate that and sympathize with that. it's hard. so, you know, senior families, working families. children. >> last year we got 1 50e,000 bags donated and we are trying to up that number.

there with all that sun. not much of a wind and a beautiful day and, also, once again, above average. heading to san jose if you're going to the bike party tonight. it will be in the low 60s. just a few clouds here and there and mostly clear dropping back to 58 by 10e:00 tonight and look at all the microclimates and the forecast for today. into the weekend, we'll see some upper 60s to lower 70s. so, feeli very nice. but heading closer to thanksgiving, there will be a strong cold front moving in. could bring some rain and a drastic drop in those temperatures. get ready for this, lows in the 30s thanksgiving morning. i'll talk more about that. let's see how the roads are moving now with mike. >> might have to preheat that oven a little longer. moving over towards oakland take extra time. generically major time. unless we hear from b.a.r.t. they heard over 20 minutes at west oakland and through west oak lpd. so many equipment problems that is likely to cause a systemic delay. richmond to fremont the only

well, great timing just in time for the holidays. shoppers will have a few more options at broadway plaza. the shopping mecca has been undergoing a massive expansion that started two years ago and now the reveal is set to begin. today a ribbon cutting ceremony for two new stores and a new parking garage. there is also a separate event for an expanded macy's store but the work is not over. between now and next week, more stores set to open. the remodel won't begin until next spring and that point it would include 40 new stores. if you're planning some retail therapy to go with your turkey this thanksgiving weekend, you'll have plenty of. according to a survey by the national retail federation, 135 million people plan to shop online and in stores on day, black friday and over the thanksgiving weekend. that's about 1 million more than last year. the far mu jarty plan to shop on black friday. only one in four to shop on

at the west oakland station and critical juncture and that's causing major delays systemwide. the roadways by compare. >> ron:son are moving very well. at 5:30 an update to breaking news we have been tracking since we came on air an hour ago. we are now hearing 80 people who are held hostage by a gunman in a hotel in west africa are free. >> startling developments to wake up to. 170 people originally taken hostage and three people confirmed dead at this point. kris sanchez is tracking the latest breaking details from our newsroom. what can you tell us now? >> we can tell you that those 80 hostages were freed by special forces who are now inside that radisson blu hotel going floor by floor fleeireeing guests and staff and looking for those hostage takers. in the first live images from the tv images you can see people on the streets. initially it seemed that they were head under to the hotel.

we now know that those soldiers are leading them to safety. you also see folks running out of the hotel this morning. and you can also see some of the soldiers that are in the lobby in this video, as well. now, the malian army does have experience with islamic extremists because for most of 2012 the capital city was occupied by islamist fighters. a military operation drove them out just last year. the radden blu hotel is known to be used by diplomats and other air france crews, as well. the hotel reading we are extremely concerned about the situation in mali and for the safety of our guests and employees and the hotel we are in contact with the authorities there. now, the u.s. embassy staff and u.s. citizens in bamako are urged to settle in place. we should mention that back in august the embassy did issue a

trying to figure out how these terrorists manage to operate in france without ever being detected. >> exactly. and how they even got into the european union and one of the things they're asking the eu for today is to tighten up security around the exterior borders because they believe to be the mastermind behind this was in syria when, in fact, he was moving freely between countries within the eu. new this morning we have learned that there three people killed in that raid that police undertook to break up that terror cell the other day. one of them was abdelhamid abaaood and one his cousin. we just got this within the last hours. she is the female suicide bomber, authorities say, who was at that place. they have now confirmed after having her passport and other confirmation that she was, in fact, killed. we learned this morning a third body was found there. that one is yet unidentified.

"today in the bay" stefchang joins us from oakland police headquarters this morning with how the situation developed overnight as it seems to be over now. >> it is over now, sam. we went by the standoff scene at

the hotel and it was completely clear. we do know that it started yesterday and stretched into the midnight hours. if you look at the video there, there was a pretty heavy police presence there with oakland s.w.a.t outside this motel 6 south of the coliseum where there was a standoff situation with a murder suspect holed up inside the motel room after firing at officers. oakland s.w.a.t out there evacuating people and negotiators there also trying to convince that suspect to leave the building and let everything end peacefully and safely. now, on the second floor, but it appears what they wanted did not happen. spotted a coroner's van in the motel parking lot indicating that someone died in this. what is unclear is whether that person was jason alexander brown an 18-year-old oakland resident linked to an east bay last month. he is the one who barricaded himself inside that motel room. investigators believe brown and an unidentified man shot two men

at a cvs parking lot on first street in livermore back on october 24th. one victim died and the other hurt pretty badly. brown is wanted in connection with two killings in both sackroomo and fresno. now, also what we do quo that we went to the scene earlier this morning and that police shut down 880 the off ramp while all this was unfolding. since it is over, we can tell you that all back open now. live here in oakland, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, steph. at 5:37. the search is on for a man who broke into a home in hercules in the middle of the day. this is surveillance video of him running through the house, which the homeowner sebl says he was able to monitor from his cell phone while he was at work. they arrived an alarm alerted them to the burglary. officers surrendered that home and even brought in a canine but the suspect managed to get away. >> technology keeping you safe there. 5:37 now. one bay area fighting wack against a rash of burglaries and

robberies. in the past month, 12 burglaries and two robberies all took place between el camino and interstate 280. hundreds of people packed the city hall to talk about ways to improve safety in their community. police say criminals are taking advantage of people who forget to lock their doors or their windows. the police are urging residents to be more vigilant. >> seeing someone that doesn't belong in your neighborhood, you think it has been sitting there driving around the neighborhood really slow, give us a call. >> police are going to be stepping up their patrols in the area amid this crime spike. in san francisco, when your car gets stolen, the paint often even when you get your car recovered. that's because victims have to pay high towing and storage fees. all nat is about to change. effective next month, the city will waiving those fees. under the current policy, city

hunger is very real this holiday season. alameda county food bank needs your help. they are short 15,000 turkeys and chickens and they're asking people to donate food or money to help them provide thanksgiving meals for more than 40,000 homes. right now, one in five county residents depends on the food banks. well over the national average. >> so, we see those very clear deficit of food. a little can go a long way when it comes to helping out ending hunger. >> we have officially kicked off our annual holiday food drive. bob redell live in pleasanton with how you can make a difference this holiday season. strike up that band, bob. >> this is how we roll on friday mornings here at the safeway pleasanton. people to donate for the hunger drive. you pull out pep band. these guys are awesome here this morning. this is our sixth annual help us end the hunger food drive.

tremendous. >> just a taste of the music. >> taste of the weekend now. bring it to us, kari. >> this friday and our weather looks great as you head out this morning, it will be cool. but just expect a nice, comfortable. as we take a live look now at san francisco, the camera shaking around a little bit. high atop the city looking towards the airport and as we go into the rest of the day. we will see those temperatures rising from here. we're at 49 degrees in concord and napa 43 degrees. santa rosa 50 degrees and also 50 in oakland. let's take it hour by hour in san francisco. 8:00 few clouds here and there. it's 57 degrees and as we go through the rest of the morning 63 degrees and 65 it grees at 2:00 and into the afternoon and evening hours. feeling nice, but starting to cool back down into the 50s with mostly clear skies. so, looking at the weekend forecast for all of the microclimates. san francisco into the upper 60s dropping back to 64. still nice, but look at what

we're expecting in the south bay. 75 degrees on sunday. also some 70s for parts of the bay, tri-valley and north bay. so, the inland areas really warm, but we're getting ready for a drastic drop in those temperatures. won't be until early next week, but kind of bad timing between tuesday and wednesday. a front moving in, bringing some rain, some snow for the sierra and a drastic drop in those temperatures, but it will finally feel like fall as we head into thanksgiving morning. look at these lows. we're expecting them to be in the lower 30s. and also some widespread freezing temperatures, especially in the valley. you'll want to keep checking in for updates. is it looking better for b.a.r.t. riders yet, mike? >> the b.a.r.t. system still advises that we have a major delay system wide. but i've seen some trains from our oakland station where we have our camera. they've been maybe five to seven-minute delays right now. we'll get more traffic. the roadway traffic slow. we'll say that is your option as you're traveling through the

guilty to child pornography and sex crime charges. he will stay in henderson up to three weeks before being sent to prison to fulfill his sentence. a follow up now released after serving time but with no place to go. that is a problem that violent sex offender is facing after he was evicted from a motel 6 in vallejo yesterday. officials released frazier smith from a state hospital on wednesday and checked him into the hotel but the property managers evicted him yesterday because he was checked in under a different name. vallejo city leaders believe that state contractors were trying to hide smith's identity. it's unwhether the convicted sex offender should stay now. it is 5:58. a daring rescue during a kayaking adventure. a racing kayaker fell out of his raft while rushing down a fierce rapid. a volunteer lept into the water

throughout the week. 49 degrees now in the north bay. mostly clear skies and 50 in the east bay and. san francisco looking at 68 degrees. today while the rest of the bay area in the low to mid-70s. i'll show you the weekend forecast and what to exheading into thanksgiving. that's coming up in a few minutes, but a lot of updates now from mike. >> first of all, kari, overall, the bay looks great right now for your commute. this is a bad scene west 580 at 24. this crash you see chp on the scene and we did have a couple vehicles visible. a couple on the shoulder and a flatbed truck. now, once they do load it and it doesn't look like they're having any problems. they can clear most of those lanes. this is approaching the maze. i'll show you the map in a second and also show you the b.a.r.t. map because major b.a.r.t. delays because of a problem at the west oakland station. the equipment problem has been cleared. but, all but one line the richmond to fremont line all goes through that station. b.t.
