t as cold as we've seen throughout the week. 49 degrees now in the north bay. mostly clear skies and 50 in the east bay and. san francisco looking at 68 degrees. today while the rest of the bay area in the low to mid-70s. i'll show you the weekend forecast and what to exheading into thanksgiving. that's coming up in a few minutes, but a lot of updates now from mike. >> first of all, kari, overall, the bay looks great right now for your commute. this is a bad scene west 580 at 24. this crash you see chp on the scene and we did have a couple vehicles visible. a couple on the shoulder and a flatbed truck. now, once they do load it and it doesn't look like they're having any problems. they can clear most of those lanes. this is approaching the maze. i'll show you the map in a second and also show you the b.a.r.t. map because major b.a.r.t. delays because of a problem at the west oakland station. the equipment problem has been cleared. but, all but one line the richmond to fremont line all goes through that station. b.a.r.t. still says plan on up

to 30 minutes extra. to be safe if you get there early, enjoy a cup of coffee before work. folks, there is your delay and the scene of the crash 580 at 24 and traffic jamming up anyway coming off the toll mrauza and the berkeley curve. the metering lights are on because more traffic expected on the roads after everybody hears about b.a.r.t. delays. but for the rest of the bay, aside from that route, the bay bridge into the city, things are looking really good. as you would expect for a lighter friday. back to you. >> mike, thank you. breaking news to tell you about. a hostage situation unfolding as we speak inside of a radisson hotel in west africa. right now, we know that three people are dead, dozens still trapped inside by several gunmen. "today in the bay" kris sanchez following the situation all morning long. kris, right now special forces are going floor to floor in mali trying to free some of those hostages. >> about 80 of them are now free, as you mentioned. three people we can confirm did not survive the attack and there may be more. the malian army is inside that hotel and now we know that in the last hour, france agreed to

send 50 elite fighters to ali in the first images out of bamako, mali. head under to the street. we know the military was trying to get them to safety. we saw guests running and soldiers in the hotel lobby in this video, as well. now, the malian army commander said ten gunmen stormed that hotel with grenades yelling "god is great." he also reports that as the commander for mali that one hostage was released by the gunman after citing verses of the koran. this is a map of the area we're talking about and we know that france has experience in mali for most of 2012. the capitol city bamako was occupied with islamic fighters and some with links to al qaeda. the french-led military operation drove them out just last year. now the radisson blu hotel known to be used by diplomats and air

france crews and their website reads we're extremely concerned about the situation in mali and for the safety of our guests and employees and our hotel, we're in contact with authorities there. they say 170 people were inside that hotel. now, u.s. embassy staff and u.s. citizens in bamako have been told to shelter in place. let them know they are okay and we should mention that back in august the embassy did issue a security message warning of a heightened security risk outside bamako city. now, back to the hotel three people, again, are confirmed dead and there could be more. 80 of the 170 guests and staff have according to the malian army. that means the fate of nearly 100 other people may be unknown. a discrepancy between what the hotel is reporting and what the military is reporting. but we can all agree that with three people dead and many dozens of people still being held hostage, the situation is still involved.

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live at oakland police headquarters this morning and police are not saying much about the investigation. we saw a coroner's van leave that scene just a few hours ago. >> we did. we don't have the confirmation of who died, although people at both the oakland police department and alameda county coroner's bureau said it's believed to be that of a homicide suspect who barricaded

himself inside a room after firing at officers. this was at the motel 6 near haggenburger and 880 where there was the standoff situation that began yesterday and led into the midnight hours. negotiators were there trying to convince the suspect to leave the building. the focus mainly on the second floor. our camera spotted a coroner's van in the motel parking lot indicating someone died. again, believed to be a homicide suspect. who sources say was jason al alexandener brown. investigators believe brown and a man who still unidentified shot two men at a cvs parking lot on first street in livermore. this was back on october 24th killing one man and severely wounding the other. brown also wanted in connection with killing in both sacramento and fresno. we can also tell you that there is no traffic impacts any more since the scene is clear.

the off ramp is back open and we are still waiting for updates from opd and we'll bring them to you when we get them. live here in oakland, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." happening san francisco mayor ed lee scheduled to hold a news conference later this morning to discuss which sent 20 people to the hospital. as we reported yesterday, maintenance reports revealed that that box is not registered but the california public utilities commission as required by state law. a mandatory safety inspection, that never happened either. doctors now say the man brutally beaten by alameda county sheriff deputies may not be able to use one of his arms, again. deputies hit him with his busome 30 times last week in a san francisco alley. it was captured on the surveillance video. doctors ended up putting metal rods and plates into his arm. now according to authorities he rammed two squad cars in san

lendro and led them on a chase in a stolen vehicle before they arrested him in this alley. he remains hospitalized. . the deputies are on paid administrative leave. the search right now is on for a man who police say broke into a home in hercules in the middle of the day. this is surveillance video of him running through the house which the homeowner was able to monitor from his cell phone while he was at work. they arrived after an alarm alerted them to the burglary. they brought in a canine. that suspect did get away. 6:07. you made it to friday morning. now, what will the day hold for us? let's check in with kari and a look at that forecast. >> a cool start anding way to a warm finish to the day. look at these temperatures now. it's 55 degrees in san carlos. san francisco 53 and livermore is 45 degrees. we don't have any 30s on the map now and heading into the 70s today. how about 72 degrees today in san jose. palo alto 71 and mission

district at 68 degrees and low 70s for the north bay, as well. napa 73. brentwood 76 and also 76 degrees today in livermore. so, looking much better at the weather forecast, but cooling down heading down into thanksgiving. i'll detail that coming up in about ten minutes. but a heads up for b.a.r.t. riders this morning. >> a good heads up. now b.a.r.t. says only ten-minute delays at the most. now, look, the big problem is behind me. this is still chopper over the scene. this is west 580 right at the 24 interchange. you see one truck here and a flatbed tow truck and behind that there is a spill. some liquid on the roadway. they have to clean that up. delay roads opening for a time being. so, still, just two lanes open and some more vehicles on flatbed tow trucks over there. all these lanes squeezing down to two at that point as you're making your way over towards the interchange. the maze, look at the backup for the roadways. slower drive drive here and

got to get away. a lot of people do at sfo this morning. today, in fact, is the busiestal day with over 150,000 travelers passing through san francisco international airport. i guess in the bay area, people like to get a jump on the holidays. thanksgiving isn't until next thursday, but they're saying it's one of the busiest days there at the airport. people traveling in and out of the bay area. >> i think you just fact check that situation. i just take off thursday and friday when you can take off monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday. >> we'll be here next week, though. >> yes, we will.

breaking up hard to do, the song goes. facebook is hoping to make this process a little easier. the social media site assessing a new tool that will allow people to easily remove their names from past posts linked to their exs. people will hide their posts. facebook is only testing out this feature on mobile devices in the u.s. whether deciding whether to expand it worldwide. some investors want yahoo! to break up with its ceo. >> pressure marissa meyer to get her company turned around. >> she had the pressure from the get go but intensifying. a group of investors has sent a letter to yahoo! putting pressure on the company to hurry up figure out its turn around. hue has been eclipsed by google and facebook and even messaging apps. now, yahoo! is in the middle of trying to spin off its investment but here's an interesting twist. that same investor group is suggesting instead of yahoo!

selling alababa maybe it will make more sense to sell yahoo!. that's a radical idea. this would be like the 49ers selling the team but keeping the stadium and making money that way. we'll watch shares in square this morning. a day after the san francisco company debuted on the new york stock exchanged and shares topped 45%. that's founder jack dorsy's mom using square to buy flowers outside the nyse. the ding of her transaction launched the day's trading. the healthy pop inspired headlines like this one in "wall street journal" square ipo may be a turning point for technology. you can see the level of relief here. a lot of buzz this morning about a toy you might be getting your children for christmas. kind of looks like fun. called bunchems. a little bit like legos, except they're balls and you squish them together to make things like this dog. kind of like velcro. what could possibly go wrong?

by early afternoon. we stay there with the light wind and mostly sunny skies. clear by 11:00 tonight and 56 degrees. so, don't forget that jacket. as we head into the weekend forecast, it will be so very warm. today looking at some 70s for most of the microclimates and then by sunday we'll have a couple more 60s, buts also 7 5 degrees for the south bay on sunday. we're in for a drastic drop in temperatures. we had high pressure just through the west of us blocking these cold fronts, but that will be weakening by early next week lowing for this cold front to move in. that looks to bring us some rain betuesday and wednesday. and that could impact holiday. and then behind that, the big story will be these very chilly temperature moving in and this is what we can expect thanksgiving morning. family coming in, they'll all bundled up. 33 degrees for a low in livermore. and 34 in sacramento and hopefully you can help keep a family warm.

i'll be out in santa clara tomorrow. once again, at the river mark. and temperatures will be in the upper 50s in the morning. noontime 65 and beautiful, nice and comfortable and definitely want to enjoy these warm temperatures while they last because, once again, we're getting ready for a drastic drop in those temperatures. how is it looking out there for the commute, mike? >> karia lot better now. looking over with our chopper shot. over the scene of this crash. you notice now three lanes getting by and some folks pausing for a second and still are actively trying to clear the rest of the vehicles from this crash scene. west 580 at the 24 junction. the flashing lights are clearly visible for a lot of folks in the area. expect some spectator slowing on the vicinity. let's look at the map and the bay bridge toll plaza because folks held up here are providing some benefit at the toll plaza and these folks coming a off of 580 and right now held up a little bit off the mini maze and smooth drive off the 880 interchange, as well. we still have the build and now we'll look at the maps as we promised. here down the east shore freeway

standard and held up from some of this traffic and two of them on 580 but the one i just showed you around the 24 interchange. those flashing lights and the slow down. folks are slowing down on 24 to sea going on, as well. that's the biggest build for the bay. remember it's friday a nice, easy flow for traffic and just starting to build through concord, walnut creek and up thor east shore freeway. the rest of your bay, no major delays, guys. but, again, b.a.r.t. system recovering and ten minutes for your train possibly on the delay. >> good to know, thanks, mike. coming up, an immigration reversal and examining who is coming and is leaving the u.s. might surprise you. is there a reverse migration--

with mexican immgrants -- going back to mexico? nchsh is there a reverse migration with mexican immigrants going back to mexico? according to a pew research, you can see the trend. take a look at this graph. it shows the mexican migration into the u.s. since 1850. but look at the mid-'70s. you can see a dramatic spike that lasted more than 30 years. then, right around 2009 after the recession, people started returning to mexico. the pew research center found the majority of immigrants left on their own accord. main reason to reunite with family. the release of an israeli spy imprisoned in america for nearly 30 years. the united states this morning confirming the release of convicted spy jonathan pollard. in 1987, pollard was sentenced to life in prison for providing classified information to israel while working for the u.s. navy.

on the b.a.r.t. situation. first, we start with kari who has a look at your weekend forecast. >> before you head to the b.a.r.t. station, grab a warm jacket. it is chilly again this morning. feeling milder compared to the mornings we had throughout the week, it's in the upper 40s to lower 50s now and mostly clear skies. beautiful sunrise and you'll enjoy all of that sun throughout the day and warmer temperatures with highs reaching into the low 70s. and a light breeze that carries us into the weekend. what to expect for the next several days and a big change for thanksgiving coming up. let's see how it looks for that commute now with mike. >> we did have the big b.a.r.t. delays but those trains have recovered systemwide and a ten-minute delay. a problem at the west oakland station, but that, again, has cleared. crash 580 westbound at 24, but that leaves the backup for 580 and 24 heading up to the area. now with this crash completely cleared of lanes in the last two minutes or three minutes a flow

do we know if any americans are inside? >> we got a statement from the state department saying they are aware that it is possible that there are americans inside that radisson blu hotel. right now we know 80 hostages have been freed and that three people did not survive that attack. the malian army is inside that hotel and now we know that france has 50 elite counterterrorism fighters en route to mali. again in the last ten minutes, we got this from the u.s. state department. we are aware u.s. citizens might be present at that hotel. the u.s. embassy in bamako working to verify this situation. this video of the tv coverage just coming into our newsroom this morning. you can see the military response there. guests running and soldiers in the hotel lobby at one point. the malian army commander there said that the ten gunmen stormed the hotel with grenades. some of them yelling "god is great." also reports that one hostage

for continuous updates you can follow her on twitter and check out any digital platforms. violence in mali coming as paris marks one week since coordinated terrorist attacks killed 130 people, injured hundreds more. just moments ago, the french prime minister announced another death. the so-called architect of the attacks confirmed dead yesterday, but autrities right now are still desperately searching for more suspects. "today in the bay" tracie potts joining us live from washington, d.c. this morning. all of this coming as isis has made specific threats to western targets and the obama administration and very public attempt to ease the fears of the possibility of a similar attack right here in the u.s. >> exactly. they're also pushing back as congress tries to make sure that syrian refugees. syria is where isis is headquartered. they want to make sure the syrian refugees don't enter this country. the administration says that's unnecessary, but they are trying to reassure people here that this country is safe.

in the wake of the paris attacks and isis videos mentioning washington and new york, the obama administration is trying to reassure americans that it's highly unlikely that this could happen here. >> we are not aware of any credible threat here of a paris-type attack. and we have seen no connection at all between the paris attackers and the united states. >> still, some in congress want to shut our borders to every refugee from syria and other countries known to harbor terrorists. 47 democrats voted against the president to support that, but it's unclear if the plan will ever make it to the president's desk. >> don't worry, it won't get passed. >> reporter: drawing heat on the campaign trail. >> very simply, we can't take them, folks. we can >> it could be a trojan horse. >> ben carson compared it to

chuang joining us live from the oakland police headquarters this morning with more information about who this suspect was. he had a lengthy criminal history. >> that's what is believed so far from sources, sam. but the update coming from oakland police department about ten minutes ago that this homicide suspect barricaded inside this motel room died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the standoff began after 3:00 yesterday afternoon at the motel 6. oakland police tactical operation team was there evacuating people out of the motel. negotiators focused on the second floor trying to convince that suspect to leave the building. again, just confirmed by opd that did not happen. our cameras had spotted the coroner's van in the motel parking lot leaving some hours ago. now, sources say the man inside the motel room was jason alaxeneder brown. an 18-year-old oakland resident linked to an east bay murder just last month. investigators believe brown and a man who is still unidentified

temperatures and now we're in the upper 40s. even lower 50s starting out the day. and we've had high pressure just to the west of us. keeping it warm pup keeping the cold fronts away, but that will slowly weaken and break down as we go through the weekend into early next week. the storm track has been well to the north of us and we haven't had any rain or a change in our it emptureour temperatures. heading into next week, much cooler but our temperatures now above average. san francisco 68 degrees today. east bay 71. more of those 60s and 70s and then as this drops in, it it will bring us some rain between tuesday and wednesday. maybe a wet holiday travel for a lot of people trying to get on the roads to see grandma and look at these temperatures thursday morning. it will be in the 30s out there. even freezing temperatures andably the coldest morning we've had so far this season in place for thanksgiving. and look at the highs that day. it will be in the mid-50s for the high.

and compare that to this weekend. we'll be in the mid-70s get ready to get out those heavy coats, once again. it will be very chilly on thursday. we'll take another look at this coming up, but let's see how the morn commute is going as you head out the door, mike. >> big day for travel today for example. but on the roadways it's lighter because everything is getting ready to leave town for the next week. we're looking over here towards the a weaker build for the southbound direction but still have some slowing through san rafael. on the maps not a lot for the north bay. just a little dip in the speeds and across the richmond san rafael bridge. now the last hour a tough one over here towards the maze and for the b.a.r.t. system and b.a.r.t. back on time and the approach, they've all cleared so now more folks are heading towards that bay bridge toll plaza over the last 20 minutes. that will ease up as well as we zoom out and show you the rest of the build for hayward and east bay heading across to the san mateo side.
