now at a radissan hotel. >> we're learning american civilians were at the hotel. u.s. military assisting with the evacuations. we're going to go to ron. ron, what can you tell us? >> good morning. the frantic rescue operation is underway at the hotel in the capitol of mali this morning. you mentioned at least six americans were able to be evacuated from this hotel. we do not know how many, if any, are still being held. at last check the hotel is reporting 138 people still inside the people. 125 of them guest, 13 hotel staff and the size of the number of terrorist involved, potential terrorist involved in this is much smaller numbering between two and four and it seems perhaps that they've reached security outside the hotel by baring diplomatic plates on vehicles going inside and screaming and then went underway followed shortly by the military

that came aboard and then the french sent 40 special forces in for the hotel as well. we're unfolding. >> ron, thank you very much. >> nbc has been talking to his sources at the pentagon, nick, what are you hearing? >> well, the u.s. military officials tell nbc news that u.s. special operations forces already in mali had assisted in some hostage rescue efforts and in helping the guest there evacuate the hotel. that may include those six americans that ron was talking about. don't know if they were in fact hostages or simply guest that were among those that evacuated the hotel at the, with the help of those special operations forces. >> all right, thanks nick. >> we want to bring in richard angle. richard, good morning. as an expert in this area, what do you know about these attacks? >> well, so far, we only have one claim of responsibility confirmed by nbc news.

things that puts somebody up as a priority. it's who is moving closer to becoming operational. are they talking about opinion weapons? are they associating with others who may have travelled overseas? the fbi wants to make sure they're focussing on the highest priorities. they don't have all the resources. they've got to use their best intelligence to focus. >> we talked about the part the public has in this. i'm thinking about this female suicide bomber in france who not that long ago had a totally different light and was out partying according to reports and one day she shows up and suddenly changed. is that the kind of thing people should be reporting? >> that's absolutely right. what it goes to show you is you can't profile who a suicide attacker is or who a terrorist might be. you have to look for somebody whose making violent statements. the behavior has changed. they're looking to associate

nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar will break down the study. but first new research on children who are ill and their families. this is fascinating when i was reading that this morning. more than 80% of children with cancer have unsuspected genetic mutations. >> they tested all the these kids with pediatric cancer and found one in 10 also have germ line mutations which means they were inherited that could be a susceptibility to developing future cancer in the future and not just for the future but for potentially family members, too, and what they then did, they can and they will offer the screenings to sibling and family members of the children who have these particular mutation. it's quite fascinating, because basically it changing their level of care. >> right. >> if you know you have a genetic mutation and for a particular type of cancer you can screen for it, and one of the examples that was given is that some of these kids, these small children, have the brca

dangers that you faced in france, a part of raid there. diesel, the kay nye dog, which was at its owner side died in the raid. this is serious business. i mean, these dogs are an extension of you and face danger just as you do. >> i would like to say, too, god bless america and new york city and especially what's happened in france, too, and our heart was broken, especially for the handler after seeing what happened to that dog as well. that's not the consequence but honor of being able to provide that kind of a service and sometimes pate ultimate price. >> now you want to take the great experience you've had with your dog and give it to other people with the s.e.a.l. dog foundation. what do you want to tell other veterans who may need a dog like this. >> the only thing like this, i guess, having companionship and learning how to love again. a lot of friends dealing with post-traumatic stress. i mean, again, i speak for everybody and being in the service and being able to defend america was probably by far the greatest life's honor, but
