traveling for thanksgiving we're talking about rain and snow. lots to go over. in the meantime enjoy the weekend. temperatures back in the 40s and 50s. we will see 70s across the inland valleys. still cool at it coast line. our storm track stays north over the next couple of days. we're talking about the potential for rain and snow as we move towards thanksgiving. we'll talk more about that and some temperatures that will be near freezing here in the bay area. >> wow. >> we have lots to go over. we'll talk more about that on my next report. >> stay tuned, anthony, thanks. new this morning, emergency responders in oakland had to use cables to rescue two people from a car that went down an employee ba embankment. the men have broken bones, but we're told they will be okay. they were taken to highland hospital. investigators say the car was driving too fast around a turn.

it is unclear at this point whether alcohol or drugs were involv involved. this morning, the hunt is still on for three people connected to yesterday's terror attack in mali. a hotel was stormed. the terrorists released those who could prove they were muslim by reciting passages from the koran. the rest were killed. 27 people were killed. one of the victims was american. we heard from the family spokesman late last night. >> we're devastated by the loss of our daughter who was doing the work she loved. we have no further comments at this point. >> an al qaeda extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack. one more person has died as the result of last week's

attacked in paris. french territories are back tracking after discovering a third body in the debris. they first said a woman blew herself up during the confrontation. now she's saying she was killed by an explosion that was killed by another person in the room. the suspected master mind in the attacks was also killed in the raid. last night, one week after the massacre, thousands of parisians paid tribute to the victims in front of the bataclan concert hall. one man brought his piano and played for the mourners. a small sign on the pianno read not afraid. chris christie arrived in boston last night after a long flight. the governor was on a united airlines flight that was forced to return to the gate at sfo.

a passenger was reportedly looking at a picture of a cell phone with wires hanging out of it. >> everybody is safe and got home. during the current atmosphere, you know, you can never be too careful. you know, having the folks we had on board helped. and that's all that really matters. >> and that right there is governor christie sitting at sfo before boarding the flight. a christie spokesperson tells us the passenger in the question never interacted with mr. christie nor threatened him. a former teacher and convicted child molester may be behind bars, but the fight for children's safety is far from over. parents are demanding teachers get predatory spotting training. this comes after investigators discovered a teacher molested five students at paradise valley elementary school. the district is facing a lawsuit

on behalf of one of the victims. >> for a period of nine years, he molested in his classroom behind a locked door during recess periods. >> the former teacher, john lloyd was sentenced in october to 40 years. an embarrassing situation for the san jose police department has led to a recruit being fired. the academy recruit was set to graduate yesterday, but now he's no longer with the department. this after a gun and other equipment were stolen from his car. this happened last month. the stolen gun remains on the streets, while other items such as bullets and handcuffs have been recovered. the 30-year-old recruit said the items were taken from his car while he was at a shopping mall. a ride takes a frightening turn for a mother in san francisco. police say a man ubducted her child right from the bus. it happened tuesday morning near

the transamerica pyramid. police say the suspect boarded the bus and snatched the 2-year-old boy. the mother chased after him. she got the boy back unharmed. police used surveillance video to identify the suspect and he's now under arrest. in murin a team group is fighting to stop the marketing of alcoholic drinks to kids. alco pots are showing up in convenience storms. the teen group wants to change what they say is predatory marketing towards teenager. even though a push for a state wide ban did fail, these kids say they're not giving up on keeping their peers safe. >> yes, i think kids drink these and get drunk. i don't like seeing kids like that out in the streets. >> organizers say five stores in the canal district agreed to take the colorful cans off their

was released. he spent the past couple of nights in his car after he was kicked after a motel. what's his next move? jody hernandez spoke with smith's attorney. >> it's hysteria. >> reporter: that's how smith's attorney describes the backlash in the city of vallejo following this week's release of the sexually violent predator. >> there is political hay to be made by some who would whip up hysteria. >> he's a violent sexual predator. he's not welcome in the city. >> reporter: police say they're doing all they can to force smith out of their city. they say motel 6 evicted him on wednesday after learning he was there. they claim the security team monitoring smith used their own name to register him. >> frazier smith is on motel 6's do not rent to list nationwide. if they had told him he was

there they would not have rented him a room. >> reporter: police say smith who has a long history of sexual assaults has been sleeping in the car the past two nights because hotels will not rent to him. smith's attorney says that's unfair and wrong. >> it's incredibly dangerous for him. who wants people sleeping in their cars? the community doesn't deserve it. >> reporter: smith is concerned about the uproar his presence is causing. claims he's trying to stay positive. he says the 51-year-old is being monitored 24/7 both by gps and by somebody with him at all times. and he wants to be a good neighbor. >> i think he'd be a better neighbor than some that i've got. he's remarkably columned and focused. he's determined to succeed. >> reporter: jody hernandez nbc bay area news. we have much more ahead on

sierra jenkins has the story. >> this is about the worst thing that can happen. and should never high pressuapp. we're trying to recover her so she can be safe. we're concerned for her safety. >> reporter: she was born at the zoo and typically lived with her family. she has never left her inclosure until now. this is the inclosure where she escaped. it is still uncloknown how the panda was able to get over the fence. zoo employees tell me they're not great jumpers and the trees are placed several feet from the fence. however, they do say they're excellent climbers. >> they can do very well is climb. the way to contain pandas is make the walls sheer. they are unclimbable. we've tested that out. >> reporter: there's an ongoing search for the panda with volunteers and multiple agencies assisting.

visitors are concerned. >> there's a lot of big predators that have moved since the fire. so it seems like a scary situation for a baby to be in. >> reporter: the zoo believes she is probably in the park, which is located next to the zoo. that's where concentrated search efforts are. >> she should be probably sleeping or trying to be quiet so that she's not detected. that would be a normal behavior for her. >> reporter: she says there is no environmental concerns. they're worried about her being hit by a car if she begins wandering. >> she survives almost exclusively on bamboo. there's a lot of bamboo grown here in people's yards. that's a good place to keep your eye out for her as she might have smelled that patch of bamboo and will be needing to eat quite a bit. they eat a lot of bamboo. >> that was sierra jenkins. the zoo manager says the california department of

forestry is assisting in the search. from facebook founder to soon to be father. mark zuckerberg will be taking advantage of his own company's benefits. he posted on his facebook page this picture. if we have it. and announced he's taking two months of paternity leave. facebook offered employees of four months of maternity of paternity leave. nbc bay area and safeway are teaming up again to help feed bay area families this holiday season. today, kicks off the sixth year of the food drive. one bag of groceries can make a big difference to those in need. pick one up at any safeway location. each one is $10. the team at nbc bay area will be at select safeways throughout the bay area today. we'll be taking your donated bags. our food drive runs until

way as we head towards thanksgiving. we are talking about the potential for some rain in the bay area the day before thanksgiving and the potential for snow. that's not the big headline. the big headline will be freezing temperatures the next couple of days. not though until about wednesday and thursday. we'll talk more about that in a little bit. let's talk about what's happening now. the sun's coming up across the north bay. we're looking at beautiful sunshine all the way across the entire bay area today. temperatures will be nice. 60s at the coast line. low 70s, south bay temperatures very comfortable. the storm track stays well to our north over the next couple of days. high pressure sitting off the coast. it's a dirty ridge. it's not a complete big area of ridge of high pressure. we have clouds going to drift through the area. a mix of sun and clouds through the day. the clouds move through the bay area today and tomorrow. we're not expecting big changes until wednesday. that leads me to this, we're

talking about holiday travel. if you're going to be doing any traveling across the state, wednesday just keep in mind you could run into sierra snow and rain. let's take a peek at this. this is what we're expecting for wednesday. a storm system will move through the bay area. that will move tuesday and wednesday. that will keep rain and snow for parts of the sierra. these are afternoon highs, tahoe, 29. 20 for yosemite park. you could run into showers, fresno, bakersfield. a wet community towards la or palm springs. southern california, lots of sunshine is expected. if you're visiting family down there, 61 degrees. there's a storm system, move through tuesday, give us a few showers. same deal for wednesday morning. the big story will be the snow and freezing temperatures. this is thanksgiving morning. look at the temperatures, 32 for santa rosa. you'll be waking up to that temperature thursday morning.

chemotherapy is one of the of all the awful things that come with a cancer diagnose, chemotherapy is one of the things at the top of that list. a san francisco woman is dedicating her time and talents to bring some beauty to a place no one wants to be. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has this morning's bay area proud. >> she knows she's fortunate that she or anyone in her family has had to battle cancer. nancy says it just had to be done. when it comes to directions, taking a left where you normally take a right, can lead to some unexpected places. in her doctor's office for a

routine visit six years ago, nancy ballard took such a turn and hasn't turned back since. >> yeah, i really didn't think that was the path i was going to be taking. i hate to hurt your -- >> that left you see led to a chemotherapy treatment room. the place where cancer payments spend hours upon hours depressed nancy in a matter of seconds. >> sad. i'd say 70s sad. when i saw that room, it kind of clicked. i wouldn't want to be there on a good day, let alone a day i was fighting for my life. >> nancy vowed to remodel that room. and though not a designer herself, she found some to help her. and she hasn't stopped since. this past weekend, her rooms at rock nonprofit. they made over three rooms at san francisco's st. francis hospital. add to the more than 150 other

rooms in 15 facilities and nancy has touched spaces that see 800,000 cancer patients a year. patients nancy will never see. she's gone long before they can ever say thanks. >> it's not about seeing the person's gratitude. but it's knowing that if your mom or dad or your kid or your somebody was in there, you'd want them to be in a room like this, too. >> nancy did stick around, though, long enough this time for former giant and cancer survivor dave trebeky to dedicate the hard work. >> for just a few moments in their day as their getting their chemo they can push the pause button and look around them and experience something other than the pain that they're going through. and that is a beautiful thing. >> even with more than 150 rooms rocked, nancy knows that just a

and cold temperatures. we'll go over that once again coming up in my next report. temperatures by thanksgiving morning, santa rosa, even san jose, near freezing. >> wild going from 70s to 30s. >> it's going to get really cold. talk more about that coming up. thanks. we have developing news in europe. a serious terror warning has the belgian capital of brussels on high alert. people are being warned to avoid crowded areas. this one day after islamic extremists stormed a hotel in mali. this morning, the hunt is still on for at least three people involved in that attack. an al qaeda linked extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack. it left 27 people dead, including one american woman. we heard from that family's spokesman late last night. >> we are devastated by the loss of our wonderful daughter who was doing the work she loved.

we have no further comment at this time. and ask you respect our privacy. >> this, of course, comes one week after the massacre in paris that left 130 people dead. last night, thousands gathered for a candle light memorial at the bataclan concert hall. the terror group isis claimed responsibility for the attack. now to our top stories in the bay area. broken bones, but still alive. two men are recovering this morning after their car went over an employee babankment. it took crews about 30 minutes to pull the two men to safety. investigators say the car was driving too fast around the turn. no word if alcohol or drugs were involved. this morning, uc berkeley campus police are investigating a kidnapping and sexual assault. investigators say a woman was taken from campus around 6:00 thursday night and wasn't released until friday morning.

so far, campus police are not releasing a description of her attacker. they say students can use the campus escort service if they're worried about walking alone. chipotle e. coli out break spreads to california. the cdc is tracking two more cases. in all 45 people in six states have gotten sick after eating their food. the cdc says it's trying to pinpoint the ingredient responsible for the outbreak. it is liftoff for space x. the private space travel company owned by elanmusk got the green light from nasa to transport astronauts to the international space station. space x would be in competition with boeing. this comes after space x won a

contract to launch the next spy satellite. tesla is on damage control. a possible seatbelt defect has prompted its largest ever recall. it's voluntarily recalling his fleet of model s sedans. that's 90,000 cars world wide. it's because of one single report of a car in europe that did not have a seatbelt properly connected. tesla owners should schedule a visit for an inspection. just in time for the holidays, stores in a popular shopping center in the east bay are starting to reopen. yesterday, the macy's story opened at the renovated broadway plaza center in walnut creek. many of the stories are under construction. corners tavern says the delay is starting to hurt their business. >> 20%, easily of our monthly sales. everybody had to wait and know that once it was done, we're

going to be sitting pretty. >> broadway plaza project managers say the delay is due to other development projects downtown. when the renovated plaza is complete it will include more than 40 new stores. new this morning, recreational drones, there's been a serious discussion about how they should be registered. the hot topic hits just in time for the holidays as many people think about drones as gifts. nbc's erica gonzalez breaks down what you need to know. >> reporter: this is a view from one of this year's hottest holiday gifts. quadcopters or unmanned aircraft better known as consumer drones. >> there's a few family members that would also like one. i might just help them out. >> reporter: there are quite a few to choose from. >> most people want to kind of get into it for, you know, less expensive and, you know, get to know the hobby.

ban drones. some apps will detect restricted air space. drones are hitting the market. >> i've had four of these. i'm thinking of getting myself an upgrade. >> that was erica gonzalez reporting. today, the faa is getting ready to review recommendations that all drones weighing more than half a pound be registered. a decision is expected to come just days before christmas. well, it was a long and public fight. it seems governor jerry brown and janet napolitano have reached a compromise. a plan reached thursday says the university system will accept 5,000 more undergraduates next year. plus, tuition won't rise until 2017. even then it would be 3%. more professors will be hired to meet increasing enrollment numbers.

the plan is to accept more than 10,000 more students. a group that isn't having trouble raising money, ab&b. they just raised more than $100 million is a new round of fundin fu fundi funding. it's a good month for the company, weeks ago it toppled a voter initiative to limit short term representles. hundreds of cats and dogs get a much needed left in their chances of becoming adopted. 800 california pets boarded 22 airplanes to head to different states where their breed is in high demand. the air lift was organized by wings of rescue. pilots who volunteer their time and planes for the annual holiday event. >> we take little guys like this and fly them to the east coast where they get adopted quickly. on our way back we bring the big dogs and bring them to areas where there's a demand for big

welcome back on this saturday, 7:44. you can see we're waking up to sunshine this morning. here on this saturday we're looking at fog free conditions. we're noticing the foliage across the area. limited this season because of the lack of rainfall we haven't seen over the past couple of years. that takes a toll on the trees. as we step outside, temperatures nice and mild across most of the bay area. with the exception of the north bay. 39 degrees still across parts of the north bay. we're looking at temperatures in the 30s. this afternoon, everybody back in the 60s and 70s. 71 for the east bay, tri valley, 74 expected there. even across parts of the south bay today. temperatures back into the low 70s. if you're staying local, you'll be here across the bay area, or anywhere across the state as we head towards wednesday and thursday. we're tracking a potent storm system that's going to move

through the bay area. that will leave for some rain and snow. wednesday we're expecting the storm system to move through the area. wednesday afternoon, that will move through portions of the sierras. they're expecting snow for tahoe and yosemite and showers down towards the central coastline. even santa barbara and monterey, you may run into showers if you're doing traveling down 101 or 5. la, san diego, palm springs are expected to be dry here. this is wednesday. the day before thanksgiving. and that's when temperatures are expected to tumble. 61 for los angeles. kind of cool for this time of year. there's the cold front that's going to be responsible for our big blast of cold air. tuesday it moved through. that will give us showers in the bay area. we'll wake up to residual showers wednesday morning. the cold front swings through wednesday afternoon. by thursday, it is going to get cold. we're talking about temperatures cold. the coldest air we've seen since january of this year.

so yeah, it's going to be very cold. 32 expected for thanksgiving morning. for santa rosa. 40 for san francisco. thanksgiving morning, 36 degrees expected for san jose. not only are we going to see the cold air. we'll see snow. we're talking about the potential of upwards of six to 12 inches of snow for places like sierra, tahoe over to near kirkwood. expecting significant snow this go around. for us, though, i don't think it's going to be a big rainmaker. tuesday the storm moves through. thursday our temperatures don't move that much. the north bay, even through san francisco, east bay, tri valley, looking at temperatures everything thanksgiving afternoon only in the 50s. these are afternoon highs. so it's going to get cold as we head towards thanksgiving. in the meantime, enjoy the nice warm weekend. because, boy, it's going to get chilly around here wednesday and thursday. >> we'll enjoy the final days of warm warmth. thanksgivings. we have much more ahead. recovering after the napa quake.

welcome back. it was august 24th, 2014, when a magnitude 6.0 quake shook napa to its core. one of the most troubling images that day was a napa church literally coming apart at the seams. tomorrow, the parish is finally ready to reopen. here's "today in the bay's" joe rhizoto jr. >> our church suffered a great deal of damage. to see the church following the earthquake was shocking. >> reporter: we often think of a church as a place of faith and healing. when a 6.0 earthquake tore through napa on august 24th, 2014, napa's first united methodist church was the one in need of saving. >> much of the plaster inside the room had fallen off. >> reporter: the pastor can still recall every bit of the destruction, the broken pipe organ, rain of debris, the

buckled wall. >> there was a separation of about 18 inches. you could literally be standing here and looking up at blue sky. >> we saw the damage to the church. we all wondered if we'd ever be back in this room again. >> reporter: the local seventh-day adventists gave the church a place to worship while their church was under repair. >> the most wonderful thing that happened was the adventists coming out and say you can use our space. >> we had scaffolding all over. >> reporter: that stays up for 15 months. now, the scaffolding is gone, the workers moved on. and the flock is coming home. >> i love it. i'm excited. ready to preach. >> reporter: united methodist will hold its first service here

since the quake. this week has been a flurry of preparation for the big day. >> you know, it's back to its original glory. >> people come here on november 22nd looking around and they're thinking where did we spend $2 million, it looks the same. >> reporter: through their 15 month exile the congregation learned a church isn't about a building after all. >> it isn't just the space. it's the people who worship here the people who find a spiritual home here. >> reporter: he knows what he'll say to those people when he takes the pulpit again. >> i know my first words. now, where was i? >> reporter: other parts of downtown napa still bear the earthquake scars, but on sunday united methodist's destruction will be cast into the files of history. and this church once again becomes the place of healing.

the competition is tough, but one bird makes the cut to get the official thanksgiving pardon next week from president obama. plucked from obscurity the winning turkey is screened for manners and temperment. some thanksgiving to christmas, macy's union scare teamed up with san francisco's spca once again for the annual holiday window display. that's when some adorable and adoptable puppies and kittens steal the show. the theme for this year's window is charlie brown and his friends. his dog, snoopy was at yesterday's unveiling. we should mention snoopy is not available for adoption. >> unless that's a cute dog you want to name snoopy. >> great point. it will be a beautiful weekend you say, enjoy it while it lasts. >> temperatures today and tomorrow, monday and tuesday back into the 70s. thanksgiving morning, freezing temperatures about the afternoon thanksgiving, 50s for highs. >> incredible. thank you so much for making us a part of your morning.
