lows dipping into the 30s. be mindful of that, time to bring in the plants. we're already freezing in the north bay. since we do have wed conditions out there, we may have also some icy conditions, especially in the elevated roads which may be closed down this morning. if you're getting an early start on the thanksgiving travel, a look at today's forecast only brings it into the mid 50s. we'll see more of the 50s heading into the weekend. i'll detail that and we'll take a look at the next chance of rain and the snow in the sierra. how is it looking at the bay bridge, mike? >> looking all right. looking at the metering lights. it was a little more gradual. this is a holiday week as we look at your maps, we see a slight dip in the speeds at the bay bridge toll plaza and berkeley curve. that's about it. highway 37 and highway 4 lighter than we typically see. the north bay no problems.

watching the kingsides later this morning. may cause the closure of highway 101. it's not weather related necessarily. here is slowing south 680 towards highway 84. the motorcycle, no major injuries, everything is off the roadway. folks are slowing down because they see flashing lights and we may have to block one lane as the tow truck arrives. the rest of the day moves well, highway 50, 88, 89, chains required. rain approaching grapevine and gorman. so far no closures. back to you. >> good news as a lot of people are traveling. it's 6:01 right now. new disturbing details in the shooting death of an oakland artist. we now know the gun used was stolen from an i.c.e. agent's car in san francisco. good morning. san francisco police confirmed that gurch was stolen from a parked car in the south market neighborhood. it turns out that gun belonged to an i.c.e. agent, someone who worked for federal department of immigration and customs enforceme enforcement. yesterday the man accused in that robbery and murder appeared in courtroom. you can hear in the video he was not happy. his name is marquise holloway, a 20-year-old man from stockton who police say shot and killed antonio ramos as he painted a mural under 580 in oakland. investigators believe holloway was trying to rob ramos of his camera. >> taking a break and was taking a picture so he could memorialize it and put it up on the web side. he had some of his camera equipment out there. i believe that's what sparked the whole incident. >> in court documents, the suspect indicates the shooting of ramos was an accident.

now, regarding the theft of guns. since 2006 i.c.e. agents have lost 165 weapons. again, with regards to holloway, that arraignment was postponed yesterday because of his outburst. he's expected back in an oakland courtroom this monday. reporting live in the san francisco newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." all right. this is a problem we exposed two weeks ago, stolen guns from law enforcement officers being used in violent crimes. to watch our exclusive investigation, go to nbcbayarea.com. happening today, a north bay man accused in the deadly stabbing of his mother and father is supposed to make his first court appearance. authorities in ukiah arrested 34-year-old nathan wilson on monday. he's accused of killing his mother and father earlier that day at their family home in sebastopol. neighbors say for a long time wilson struggled with mental

hecht issues. he'll be arraigned later today. a total loss this morning after a fire. it started about 8:00 last night on wooding court in shaig. the flames quickly spreadment unfortunately firefighters kept it from jumping to neighboring homes. a family of three lives there but weren't home when it hams. our crew was still there when the homeowner arrived, devastated, but trying to look at the bright side. >> it's a shame and heartbreaking, but, again, i'm okay, my wife is okay, my son is okay. my family is okay, so we'll get through this. >> firefighters say they won't even go inside to try to determine a cause until later today. if you live in the south bay, you likely know how bad the traffic backup can be during the holidays as people wait in their cars trying to see i have sewn nah park's family of nights clup. >> the holiday tradition says it has a fix, you just reserve your

spot. kris, this will be a big chance for hundreds of people to go out and see it. a lot of people even avoid the area during the holidays. >> reporter: it has been very difficult. i know my family has eaten dinner in the car waiting in line. they certainly are worth it once you get inside, but fris straighteni straightening leading up to that. the new reservation system aims to take that out. if you haven't been here, i should tell you it's about a mile and a half stretch through the park here in santa clara county parks district. santas and candy canes, dinosaurs playing basketball, all synchronized to music tuned into your car radio. it has been a very nice 30-minute break from the holiday hustle and bustle once you get in. on yelp, the fantasy of lights gets 3.5 stars. one reviewer saying complete waste of time, i waited for one

and a half hours. another said, still in line over 2 1/2 hours. it turns out for that review it was worth the wait because she gave the display five stars in tend. that's the reason for the new reservation system this year. the santa clara county parks system will let you pick a day, december 5th you can walk through, the 6th through the 31st are the days you can drive through. you pick your time and even pay online $20 per car, up to 12 people, 50 dollars if you're bringing in a van or some other high capacity vehicle that carries more than 13 people. we put the reservation link up on our website, nbcbayarea.com. the hope is this will keep this holiday tradition nice and not naughty for the folks driving into the park to see the display, but also to give a bit of relief to the city of los gatos where the streets have been clogged by people waiting in line trying to get in, idling, putting fumes into the air. certainly a lot of folks have had to steer clear of the area.

only in the mid 50s no matter where you are, get used to it. we'll see more of this weather heading into the next several days including the weekend. i'll show you just how cold it gets this weekend. let's check in now with mike tracking a couple of those spinouts. >> that's right, kari. warning folks about slick roadways. the rain and sun hasn't come out to dry everything out. we'll look at your map. we're talking about a spinout northbound 280 around winchester boulevard. car went into the center divider there. that's blocking the center divide and part of your fast lane, a distraction. the only slowing we see is 101 and over at the scene north 280 and winchester boulevard. stay to your left if you can. meanwhile, southbound 680 at highway 84, despite the big slowdown, we've seen speeds come down to 50 miles per hour down to highway 84 where there's a motorcycle that went into the

they include 22 models shoeld sold in japan, italy, britain and spain. in the u.s., 19.2 million vehicles have already been recalled. at least eight deaths are now blamed on those air bags. corroding metal inside can break apart and hurt people when they get into an accident. hundreds of palo alto trees are literally on the chopping block. the palo alto daily news reports pg&e will have to cut nearly 350 trees near underground gas transmission lines. earlier this month the city asked for more information about pg&e's plans before the cutting commences. uber has decided to create an independent safety board to help protect riders and drivers. >> skt mcgrew, you talked about that board being made up of some of the biggest safety experts. >> they want to study it first. the new uber safety board will meet for the first time next

week. they're from all over the united states. that's actually an important point. they're all americans. ub ser an international company, but the board will start with beefing up safety here in the united states. one of the big headlines names is ed davis, the former boston police commissioner. i talked to him briefly tuesday and asked what his first move would be. he was very honest and said i don't know, i've got a lot to learn. jeff bezos, the head of amazon startled the scientific world when he announced his company blue origin successfully landed a rocket stage down at the launch pad where it first started. the blue origins rocket designed to take people into sub orbital space. nobody saw this coming, probably, least of all, the biggest surprise was elon musk. musk tweeted to bezos,

congratulations, absolutely amazing. but then he started to say things that made the accomplishment sound less accomplishment. he reports his company, spacex, has already done that. on the left you've got the blue origin video you just saw. on the right, the spacex grasshopper landing where it started in 2013. who is the better rocket man? bezos's rocket started way higher, musk's started a few hundred feet over the pad. the falcon, after sending a capsule into orbit. here is the first attempt landing it on a barge at sea. that didn't go well at all. so when we are comparing rockets bay soes wins because he's been the most successful, from the greatest height so far. musk wins for trying the hardest. both get a gold star this morning. >> who is the best rocket man?

francisco right now. this is a live look. you can see the full moon over the golden gate bridge and those clouds low in the horizon as they roll out of the bay area. we'll see more sunshine heading for the day. if you're heading over to the sierra once again, it will still be snowing. here is the snow report for squaw valley, alpine meadows. lows dropping into the teens. at base level we have a snow drepgt of 23 inches and of course it is machine groomed. look at some of the sierra snow. in kirkwood, summit snow depth at 22 inches. it is still snowing so it will continue to pile up i. looked across the sierra and picked up on the highest snow depth at mammoth mountain, 42 inches. it is still coming down as we take a live look at the radar. great news there and also this rain that moved through the bay area brought us from a tenth to up to a quarter inch of rain. as it continues to move to the south, may still impact your

holiday travel if you're heading to the south on interstate 5. keep that in mind. a look at hour-by-hour forecast in san francisco. at 9:00 at 48 degrees. into the lower 50s today, and that is where we will see a lot of sunshine, not much of a wind and then dropping back down once again tonight. by tomorrow morning, we are only looking at temperatures that will be in the 30s for most of us. in the east bay 37, freezing temperatures in the north bay. tri-valley freezing temperatures there, time to bring in those plants if you don't want them to be killed. it looks most likely that we will see freezing temperatures as we head into tonight. let's see how it looks on the roadways now with mike. >> kari, with the colder temperatures we better eat something, insulation, ham, turkey. looking toward the southbound direction in the north bay, holding steady for the last half hour. northbound not a problem, southbound not a problem either as we look at our speed sensors, we have slicker roadways.

indication of how cold it is. that's the chain control right back there. because of the chain control, look over here. a lot of people, many who we have talked to this morning, they were on their way over the hill for thanksgiving, some going as far as salt lake city. this is the end of the road for them because they didn't bring chains and they're finding a hard time finding the right size. if you're going ski boarding or snowboarding, bring the chains, 4 wheel drive with snow tires. they are meeting the traffic around applegate where they've narrowed it down to one lane. the amount of traffic out of the mountains will be your first bet of congestion. as long as everyone is doing the speed limit, 30 miles per hour in the chain control area, things moving smoothly at this early hour. it was a nightmare yesterday for drivers. a drive that normally takes 2, 2 1/2 hours took seven hours yesterday. if you wait until today, smart move on you. it's going to be a pretty good

in a while. >> it will continue to dip as we go into the next several mornings. freezing temperatures heading into tomorrow as well as friday morning. it's already freegz in the north bay. there my be icy spots there. in the low 40s elsewhere across the bay area. today's forecast brings it to 55 degrees. cool, sunny and a light wind is what you can expect today and into the weekend. we'll take a closer look into the forecast, how much snow has fell in the sierra and a look at the next chance of rain in the forecast. let's see how it looks in the south bay with mike. >> the south bay has wet roads. talking about the freezing temperatures and wed roadways in the north bay. here in the south bay, no major problems for ice. we'll look at the roadmap, northbound 280 at winchester, a spinout there. watch the on and off-ramps as we see a little build to the

traffic flow. as we move the map north, looking southbound 680 towards 84. the earlier motorcycle that lost traction there at highway 84 still on the center divide. you see slowing on the approach. a motorcycle on the side of the roadway. that's the slowdown for the tri-valley. the volume is light. meanwhile 880, not a big deal. same thing for 92 heading west. for the san mateo bridge, a lighter flow of traffic there. an earlier fender bender. maybe one lane blocked downtown. more slowing in that area. watching for the closure north 101 because of king tides later today. all clear for the north bay. 6:31. new details this morning, russia's defense ministry says one of two military pilots shot down by a turkish missile in syria is safely back at a

russian-controlled air base. both pilots ejected before impact. syrian rebels on the ground killed the other pilot. a russian marine died during the rescue operation. turkey says it shot down the plane yesterday after repeated warnings were ignored about flying into its airspace. the incident ignited tensions between turkey and russia. russian president vladimir putin is now warning of significant consequences. >> trying to calm some nerves ahead of the holidays. the white house insists there's no credible terror threat in the united states. federal, state and local agencies are taking extra safety measures, this as the thanksgiving holiday approaches. over the next few days close to 100 million americans will do some kind of traveling. this morning president obama is meeting with his national security team to focus on what's being done to protect americans. he's urging everyone to fight any fears about feeling vulnerable. >> we're vigilant. we take precautions but we go about our business. americans will not be

terrorized. >> earlier in the week, the state department issued a global travel alert. >> many in brussels are still waiting for life to return to normal, with the city sitting at its highest possible terror alert. they're finally signs of normal see returning. many public transportation lines are running again, and most schools and universities are back open. but fears are still high about two paris terror suspects believed to be on the loose. soldiers and police officers from other parts of belgium are now providing extra security. a developing story now, tension and unrest on the streets of chicago. hundreds of protesters came face-to-face with police blocking intersections as they move through the city. the scene in direct response to the release of graphic dash cam video showing a white chicago police officer shooting and killing an african-american teenager. the today's show stephanie gosk is live in chicago this morning. stephanie, law enforcement there

bracing for more backlash though the protests were largely non-violent. >> reporter: yes, sam, they were. the chicago police department came out and said they were mostly peaceful. there were scuffles with police, a few arrests made and one police officer suffered minor injuries. one of the arrests included a charge of assault of a police officer. as you mentioned, there were hundreds instead of thousands that many feared. there certainly was no widespread violence. it is a response to this dash cam video that was released. this is an incident that happened a year ago. it wasn't until yesterday that the video was released. it was ordered released by a judge and it came just hours after the police officer in the case was charged with first degree murder. all of this contributing to fears here among officials and city leaders that this could result in some violent backlash. we have not seen it yet.

there are pror mow tests planned for today. coming up on the "today" show, we'll take a closer look at the video and talk about reaction from officials in the city. >> stephanie, you mentioned concerns about city officials, i know ram emanuel came out yesterday and said let's try to be peaceful about this, knowing it could spiral out of hand. did his message resonate? >> well, he did. it was obviously an effort by him and the superintendent by the police department to quell any tension. there's a lot of criticism being pointed towards the mayor himself. there are questions about why this took a full year for charges to come out, for this video to come out. there are some that are criticizing him and alleging that the length of time had something to do with the election cycle here in chicago. they are facing some harsh critics. right now that's part of the problem here. sam? >> very interesting, stephanie gosk live from chicago, thank you so much for that report.

before the curve, there was an earlier crash. that's not a problem. it's out of the lanes. not a lot of slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is not bad, the metering lights are on. slick roadways, as you look at the map you see the slowing near broadway. an easy drive for the north bay and the approach here. will zoom in towards the san mateo bridge, picking up more photographic. south 680 still slow approaching highway 44. a motorcyclist crashed and slid out into the center divide. that's the only big issue for the tri-valley. we'll zoom all the way over toward our tahoe ride. the snow here is causing slower speeds through i-80. we'll give you the live camera in kingvale. not a lot of traffic flow, but we have folks pulled over to the side trying to get the chains on heading toward tahoe. that would be the eastbound direction where folks are heading. back to you. >> that is the official start of the holiday season right there.

thank you, scott. a new word stirring about a bug. there's a name here that's relevant. most experts greer there's no cause for alarm. the centers for disease control is worried about the spread of an insect nicknamed the kissing bug. it's called that because it often bites victims around their lips an faces. it's been known to cause the potentially fatal chagas disease. the cdc says in the u.s. only 30 such reported infections ever. if you're wore ride about the spread of the insect in california, don't worry, because it's already in california, although it's much more likely to be found in wooded areas, laura, than in your triplet-filled bedroom. >> from that, it looks like it's about as big as -- >> working out the kinks, working out the bugs here. that goes for the weather as well. >> it's cold and in some spots

it's still wet. you want to keep that in mind as you head out for the commute or if you're heading to grandma's house. let's take a live look now at san jose. we do still see those clouds in the distance and some puddles on the streets. but let me take you to the sierra. i was so excited waiting for the sun to rise to look at some of these cameras. most of them are covered up with snow. this is the best one i can find. still snowing in heavenly. we're still racking up the snowfall totals. summit depth at kirkwood is at 22 inches. it's still snowing, the highest amount i was able to find, mammoth mountain, the snow depth at 42 inches. looking good here. a beautiful clear sunrise in san francisco and our temperatures are very chilly. if you will be hitting the road, keep in mind a lot of rain has moved out of the bay area but has not cleared the state. if you're heading to the sourkts still some rain, possibly snow if you're heading down i-5. looking at the current temperatures, now in the upper

30s to lower 40s, expect more mornings like this, but getting even colder. a look at all the highs today, only mid 50s, a lot of sunshine, a few clouds early. no matter where you are in the bay area, it will only be about 55 degrees. at least the winds will be calming down. heading into tomorrow morning, this is what you can expect, freezing temperatures, time to bring in the plants. it will be freezing especially in the tri-valley. 30 in the north bay, san francisco 41 degrees. we're looking ahead to see when we'll have some more rain moving in. looks like it stays dry for the next few days and then this is the start of next week if you're heading out of town for thanksgiving and heading back on monday, you'll have another round of rain to contend with. then it looks like it gets a little more active even into the middle of next week. more showers, so great news there. not so great news. we could have some coastal flooding today and tomorrow as well. king tides in effect, especially as we head into high tide late this morning.

as all the activity has cleared from the roadway. 880 not a problem and across the san mateo bridge, westbound 92 getting more traffic. the bay bridge has enough flow that they turned the metering lights on. 535, the toll plaza is filled in. eastshore freeway and 880 recovering after earlier fender-benders cleared. mill valley quickly, north 101 was closed due to the king tides. likely to happen again today. a live look at san rafael, the puddles on the roadway, again, before the sin gets a chance to kick in, you'll see wet, slick roads out there. >> thanks so much, mike. 6:51. the south bay home a total loss this morning after being gutted by fire. started about 8:00 last night on wooding court in san jose. the flames spread but fortunately firefighters kept it from jumping to neighboring homes. a family of three lives there but weren't home when it happened. our crew was still there when the homeowner arrived

committed using a gun - stolen from a federal agent. =laura/boxes= today in the bay's bob redell is live in our san francisco newsroom. another bay area murder committed with a gun stolen from an agent. >> the gun used in the shooting death of a local artist belonged to an i.c.e. agent. >> that's what police in san francisco are telling us. that gun was used to kill an oakland muralist this past september. it was stolen from a car parked in the south of market neighborhood here in the city, a gun that belonged to an agent with the federal department of customs, immigration and enforcement, otherwise known as i.c.e. yesterday the man accused of the murder appeared in an

alameda court. you can hear from the video he was not happy. marquis holloway is a 20-year-old man from stockton who police say shot and killed antonio ramos as he painted the mural underneath 580 in oakland. investigators believe holloway was trying to rob holloway of his camera. holloway indicates that the shooting was accidental. his arraignment was delayed because of his outburst. he's expected back in court monday. you may recall the nbc bay area investigative unit recently uncovered the fact that since 2006, i.c.e. agents have lost 165 of their weapons. reporting live in the san francisco newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> major changes coming the a south bay holiday tradition for many people. those wishes to see the holiday lights display in los gatos will have to try to plan ahead. >> the tradition used to be waiting in line and waiting and waiting. that might change.
