>> i'm scott mcgrew, sam brock has the day off. it's really cold out there this morning, anthony. >> freezing across parts of the north bay and for a moment the north bay dipped down to 31 degrees. it is chilly out there across the bay area this morning. clear skies and once the sun does come up, we'll see a bright, sunny day. but it is going to be chilly. deceptive sunshine because even though it will be sunny, it will stay in the 50s today from the north bay down to the south bay. now, as we move towards the next couple of days, we have a slight warming trend and get back into the 60s and more rain in the forecast to start off your workweek on monday. we'll talk more about that coming up in the next report. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. the day's news a gunman on the loose after shooting someone right next to one of the busiest malls in the bay area. happened about 6:30 yesterday evening in the san francisco just across from the westfield mall. search the seven-story garage for the suspect. the victim suffered gunshot wounds to the leg, but is expected to survive. they say the shooting was not

random. people were parked inside couldn't get to their cars for two hours during the officer search. >> i just walked up and i was like, why are there so many people out here? tape and police. so, i was kind of surprised. >> officers are now checking surveillance cameras for pictures of the shooter. a bump in the road for today's turkey trot in san francisco, but won't put a stop to the race. someone stole a u-haul truck filled with supplies including equipment and refreshment and t-shirt and it was parked at the same location in 26th avenue as it has been for the past 13 years. the u-haul disappeared some time between 2:00 and 7:00 a.m. yesterday. organizers still have the bibs so the race will go on. in the south bay, thousands of people will take to the streets for today's turkey trot in san jose. this is video, of course, from last year. a 5k to a 10k. plenty of activities for all of all abilities. do expect some detour physical you're planning to drive into the downtown san jose area.

money collected from the race goes to the charities, the turkey trot also, of course, at san francisco's golden gate park. that's the one without the t-shirt. >> that's right. they're all working off their pie before they even have it. many people happy to be reunited for the holidays and many pscrambling to be prepared for the big meal. joyful moments, you'll love that, when you see friends and family members welcome each other at the airport and also some frantic moments as some shoppers have last-minute kitchen emergencies. >> i came here for baguettes to have with spinach dip and they're all out. so, i'm going to go to another safeway. >> we got this stuffing that i never made before and it has all these ingredients. this is the one thing that we thought we had, that we do not have. this was my second trip to the store in the last hour. >> dozens of people are getting ready to feed not just their families but also the hungry at

san francisco glide memorial church. >> just a good time to give back and be thankful for how many good things we have in our lives. >> breakfast will be served until 8:30 and then thanksgiving dinner will be available from 9:00 to 1:30 in the afternoon. the homeless and the hungry not the only people who need a good meal. volunteers in san francisco preparing meals for the elderly to deliver to them. >> part of the salvation army tradition to bring holiday joy to those who are really unable to leave their homes. stephanie chuang live in san francisco with more. good morning, steph. >> yeah, hey, good morning. happy thanksgiving laura and scott. this is about not just the elderly, but anyone known as a shut in. anyone not leaving his or her home. in just a few minutes or so, almost 2,500 volunteers will be coming in. these machines are warming up. hot to seal some of these meals. 3,400 meals will be delivered

today on thanksgiving. now, joining me is larry row with the salvation army. happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving to you. >> he's in charge of basically almost everything making sure the logistics are in place. talk to me about the preparation for something like this. >> this takes about three weeks to get going. where to find all the food and volunteers and who it is going to go to. this is a pretty large operation. >> you have known everybody's name. i noticed that, larry. larry, also on a more personal note you were sharing with me earlier your story about how the salvation army helped you at one point, too. >> absolutely. around 14 years ago, around 2001, i had a choice to make. go to prison for four years or come to the salvation army and i chose the salvation army. >> since then talk to me about the journey. >> since then my life has transformed quite a bit. i became a member of the church and now i've been an employee for probably about 12 years. >> so, tell me because the salvation army was there for you

when you needed the help, how much more it means to you today to be able to know that you're part of this effort to feed 3,400 people. >> well, you know, it's touching to me because there was a time when i couldn't feed myself. and somebody fed me. so to be able to carry that tradition that the salvation army has. once you're back on your feet, it's your turn to carry the message. >> larry rowe joining us this thanksgiving. 2,200 pounds of turkey and hundreds of pounds of yam and green beans. i can't even remember the numbers and a lot of good will, again. up early this morning. as you heard larry say from three weeks ago starting very early this holiday season. laura and scott. >> it does take a lot of planning. thanks a lot, steph. millions of people lining the streets of the big apple for a really big show. macy's thanksgiving day parade is getting under way. >> jay gray near the start of the parade route. jay security a big concern this year in particular. >> yeah, no, a lot of security.

hear the countdown of the parade just now getting under way. we're in the parade right now. take a look behind me. this just one of the floats and up top as you see, jordin sparks, the recording star winner of "american idol" is part of that float as we move across. you can get a look at the giant balloons that are the stars of this show. 17 in this year's parade. that's jake and fin on the cartoon channel. i'm a big fan of really, i didn't know about them until the parade. but they are here along with some other tremendous floats and balloons that you will see. and just about 1,100 cheerleaders and dancers. we have 12 marching bands. more than 1,000 clowns. it is a beautiful start to the holiday here. we're going to see a high of 60 degrees and organizers say that could mean record crowds. more than 3 million people lining the roadways here. as you talked about we do have stepped up security. you could see it on the ground

packers at lambeau field. right here on nbc bay area. kickoff set for just after 5:30 tonight that will come right after our 5:00 newscast. >> a lot of reasons to stay in and watch nbc bay area. plus, cold outside this morning, anthony. >> that's another reason to stay in. temperatures are in the 30s across parts of the north bay and near freezing there. 47 in san francisco and 39 in the east bay and then 37 in the south bay. later on, we'll see some sunshine and that will encourage you to get outside. it will stay very chilly. well below average for this time of year. mid-50s for afternoon highs back from the north bay down to the south bay including san francisco. now, as you take a look across the country, some rain and snow falling across parts of texas, oklahoma, kansas and over towards minneapolis, chicago. they're seeing some rain there, as well. the airport delays, well, at least right now, looks like denver has a little bit over an hour delay and we'll continue to check back if you are doing some last-minute traveling. we'll have that for you about every half hour. you notice the temperatures are

>> listen to those winds whip. scary moments near sacramento as high winds tossed tarps and canopies around. 11 people were hurt, struck by flying tents and other debris. all the injuries were minor, including scrapes and bruises. but three people were treated at the hospital. the wind wasn't really that strong. they say it reached gusts of 45 miles an hour. strong enough for me. the forecasters say any gusts would be able to pick up tents and definitely cause some damage. many of us are focusing on family and friends today. the thousands of people impacted by the valley fire really just trying to do their best to survive. nearly 1,300 homes were destroyed. "today in the bay" shows us the challenge facing middletown and surrounding areas. >> reporter: it's the end of the day at middletown high school. time for sports practice or homework. but for 100 of these students, they don't have a home to go

home to. >> the fire started when i was at my soccer game. i didn't have a chance to get any of my stuff. >> reporter: when i came back the next morning and high house was gone. >> reporter: just two months ago they were watching entire blocks of their town wiped out in the valley fire. thousands displaced, evacuated. some left. >> you can't really tell whose house burned down and whose didn't. >> reporter: today torched hillsides peak over the valley and burned cars can still be found on the side of the road and the cruel smell of charred homes comes and goes with the winds. the school principal bill roderick took us on a drive to display the devastation, starting with an apartment complex across the street. >> we had a lot of kids that lived here. and it, it was gone. >> reporter: then, north on cal stoega road. >> burned houses over there. this is a memory every day. >> reporter: and, finally, roderick drives on to his

street. >> my neighbor. and then this is my house. >> reporter: roderick, a victim himself. >> right here. this is where my house was. >> reporter: 1,28 ohomes were burned in the fire. >> it was a pile of ash with little things in it that you could identify that didn't quite burn up. >> reporter: today roderick and others are trying to move forward. applying for building permits, some have already started. >> we just got our plans back from the designers. >> reporter: nearly 2,500 people have requested assistance from fema since the fire. >> so, we do have diapers. >> reporter: but the people helping haven't left either. volunteers at the cob mountain lions club say they serve 15 to 20 families a day and they'll continue to run a free sto for fire victims three days a week. >> if the need is here, we are here to help fulfill the deed. >> reporter: everyone around town is holding on. two months later, things are not back to normal. but there's a new normal. middletown and other towns in

this area are still getting used to. >> now, it's pretty crazy to look around and see all this burnt stuff. but with the support of the community, you get past it. >> reporter: the group of kids that comes through this, they're going to reresilient and able to handle anything. >> reporter: in middletown, ian cole, nbc bay area news. >> a reminder to be thankful for what you have. >> that's right. instead of what you don't have out there, too. you can't forget just because the fire is gone, the problems still remain. >> you know, the great news with all of this. we're expecting more rain in the forecast. fire season really seems to be over and continue on this wet pattern over the next couple of weeks. in fact, two sets that we're tracking in the seven-day forecast and we are just going to keep on talking about rain as we head into december. here's a live shot in san francisco. seven-day forecast popping up at the bottom of your screen and rain is expected as soon as monday for some of us. another shot, you can see starting to finally see our sun come up over the city and clear skies as we head through the

rest of the morning hours. the others keep in mind the king tides. third day dealing with that. peak high tide comes around 11:00 in the morning. ocean beach you'll see a high tide right around seven feet and right around 10:58 and low tide right around 5:00 this evening. if you're doing any traveling across some of those low lying areas, expect some roadway flooding, at least the morning hours. by around noon things should start to go back down. now, let's take you hour by hour across the forecast. bay area looking at chilly temperatures this morning. 30s and 40s as the sun comes up. by lunchtime right near 50 degrees for palo alto, fremont, morgan hill. 48 degrees still in san francisco. by 1:00 or 2:00, you'll pop into the 50s and santa rosa, napa, 52, 53 degrees and starting to cool off in fremont. a chilly day all across the bay area wherever you go, but we'll see plenty of sunshine. the other thing we have happening, hurricane sandra. yes, zee a category 4 hurricane churning in the pacific right now and this is the strongest

hurricane in the eastern pacific, at least this far late in the season. now, as it moves over towards cabo, it is expected to weaken to a tropical storm. if you have doing any traveling this direction this weekend, heads up. we'll deal with nasty weather. for us here at home, nice and quiet. comfortable. temperatures warming back into the 60s as we head towards saturday for the south bay. expecting to stay dry as we head towards this weekend and by monday another chance of rain moves into the picture and then for wednesday, as well. two chances of rain in that seven-day forecast. just be prepared as you start that next workweek. a rainy commute is expected on monday morning. back to you guys. >>. chp warning people as they're watching the roads this thanksgiving weekend. they tweeted out maximum enforcement. this started last night and will continue through the weekend. >> saw a couple out there this morning. be careful. a celebration overseas. tens of thousands of people gathered for pope francifrancis public mass at the university of nairobi today.

good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us on this thanksgiving morning. i'm scott mcgrew for a sleeping in sam brock. >> he's up and out the door already like many people are traveling. we want to get right to that thanksgiving day forecast. if you're traveling today, anthony certainly freezing outside. >> oh, yes. temperatures in the north bay in the 30s right now and same deal for the south bay. we're at 37 degrees and really, overall, we're looking at clear skies and that's how you get those temperatures that fall overnight so quickly. 47 right now in san francisco. and later on this afternoon, everybody is expected to see full sunshine. it is going to stay chilly, though. we're talking mid-50s from the north bay and even tri-valley

stay to date. we'll look at the airport delays if you're doing last-minute traveling, looks like we're seeing some delays in denver but we'll talk more about that in a little bit. a crime that continues to make headlines fueled by growth of internet and social media our investigative unit has discovered a loophole in the law that is creating big problems for law enforcement, trying to fight against child pornography. >> senior investigative reporter stephen stock with what his investigation uncovered. >> well, good morning, guys. we discovered that federal and state law that governs how child pornography is handled conflicts right now and that could create a dilemma for prosecutors and law enforcement. federal law prohibits the copying of seized child pornography for any reason, even for defense teams in preparation of criminals. california state law, on the other hand, directly contradicts that. in fact, a state appellate out of san diego ruled that prosecutors must give copies of that very same material to defense teams. so, now law enforcement says

and scott. and then days of actual food preparation. now, we're just getting our first volunteers here on the line. couple folks from san francisco and also someone from the fire academy. so, very well represented. even a young lady from seattle at the end here. but you see all that food has to then go here where this lady is going to be sealing the meals for us. so, it's a lot of work and it takes a lot of people. it also takes a turkey or two or 3,400 meals and we've got the gorgeous, glamorous gobbler and gorgeous. raul. talk to us about what is going on here. >> well, we are salvationy and every year we put this on and i was gladly chosen by the majors here to be the glamless gobbler. >> how did you get chosen out of the many people here? >> i would like to think it's my personality and that was it. graciously picked. very honored position to have this from what i'm told. >> look, it's shiny and

everything. >> shiny. >> he even stuffed ittier. you guys can't see it. stove top. >> something very personal here, too. you were talking about your experience last thanksgiving. talk to us about that. >> last year i wasn't doing very well in my life. and i went without a meal last year. which was kind of depressing. i didn't even talk to my family. and it really, it really hurt me, right, that in america that people aren't really, that someone's not getting a meal on thanksgiving. out of all days. and i prayed that day and i asked my god of my understanding to let me have the greatest thanksgiving next year, right? here i am. >> here you are. >> i get to be of service and we're serving, 3,400 people. it's amazing. and i am in a turkey suit. who is going to beat that? >> that's the cherry on top. >> serving 2,400 pounds of turkey and 3,400 meals. the glamorous gobbler has to

alaska airlines -- isn't happy. the company is now well, employees goofing off. alaska airlines not happy. the company apologizing for some cell phone video we obtained. a traveler took this video at san jose naneta. several employees tossing a bag. this went on for 30 minutes. alaska airlines says the bag was not a passenger's. it was alaska airlines. the workers were playing a game. the video did not sit well with some travelers at sjc. >> i'd complain. >> i know. look at that. >> oh, my gosh. yeah. that's terrible. >> that doesn't make me feel too good. >> again, this did not belong to a passenger. alaska airlines says the employees really shouldn't have done this out in the open. as you begin to cook that thanksgiving meal, health experts say they have some good tips and reminders to make sure your feast is tasty and safe. first, try to keep everything clean. while it's important to wash all your fruits and veggies, never rinse raw meat or poultry before

cooking. to keep bacteria from spreading, keep raw eggs, meat and seafood away from foods that will not be cooked. and to make sure your bird is cooked, insert a meat thermometer into the nickest part of that turkey. lastly, no one likes cleaning up after a huge meal, you probably want to take a nap. but you should clean up quickly soon after eating. harmful bacteria could grow quickly at room temperature, best to refrigerate any leftovers within two hours of serving and get it done and get your pie and then you can relax. a man taking some of his first steps after a gunshot wound paralyzed him eight years ago. >> believe it or not, not even the best part of the story. garvin thomas has that in this bay area proud. >> when this incredible journey started they were complete strangers. but after eugene took millions of steps so arthur could take even one, well, these two are going to be in step forever.

you would think that after 2,600 miles of hiking, after weeks of solitude and sometimes days without food, you would think finishing the pacific crest trail would have been eugene's favorite memory of the track. sure, it was nice, eugene says. but not the best. >> at this exact spot -- >> reporter: that came a couple weeks earlier. somewhere in washington state. >> i could remember that moment like it was yesterday. i know exact where i was standing. >> we did it! we did it! >> reporter: to appreciate this moment, though, you've got to understand they. and that begins in a san francisco nightclub parking lot in 2007 when a robber mugged and shot a 20-year-old aspiring rapper from san leandro.

the bullet severed his spine, buttant touch his spirit. arthur going on to become a full time advocate. speaking out against gun violence and urging newly paralyzed patients to not give up on their dreams. just as he wasn't giving up on his dream to walk, again. all he needed was $80,000 to buy one of these. a robot exo skeleton called rewalk. which is where eugene and the pacific crest trail come in. learning about arthur's story via social media, eugene decided to hike the trail and raise that money for a man at the time he had never met. >> so good to see you. >> the farther eugene traveled, the closer he and arthur got. and that moment on the trail, well, that was when eugene heard they had reached their goal and arthur had his rewalk.

your screen. rain in the forecast as soon as. let's take you outside to oakland. bay bridge toll plaza nice and wide open. the cars flowing on through there. temperatures are cool. 39 degrees in oakland now and it is chilly across the entire bay from the south bay to the north bay and san francisco, that's the one place where we're not looking at temperatures in the 30s and the 40s. later on this afternoon, all of us will be in the mid-50s from the south bay to the north bay and it is going to be a brisk, cold wind as we celebrate thanksgiving. now, we do have some rain and some snow across parts of the middle of the country and that's really about it. the delays coming in right now fromver about a little over an hour and that is all we're seeing as far as delays at airports right now. now, the weekend forecast does bring temperatures up just a little bit for saturday back to the low 60s for south bay and still chilly for san francisco and mid-50s there. by sunday another system will slide to our south. that one is not going to bring us any rain, but the one for monday, that one is. so, monday to start the day.

military lab for those tests. 6:55. a gunman is on the loose this morning after shooting someone at a parking garage near westfield shopping center. it happened last night. police swarmed to that area to search for the suspect and now they're reviewing surveillance cameras. the shooting was not random. the victim is expected to survive. people who park inside couldn't get to their cars for a couple of hours during the officers' search. two suspects who robbed and beat a 54-year-old man are behind bars this morning. that incident caught on surveillance camera and video hard to watch. this happened last month in san francisco. police say the victim was looking for directions on his smartphone. he was attacked and knocked to the ground. the suspect stole his phone, kicked him repeatedly. that man suffered facial injuries and will need reconstructive surgery. a bump in the road for today's turkey trot in san francisco, but it won't put a stop to the race. someone stole a u-haul truck

filled with all the supplies, including equipment, refreshments, t-shirts. it was parked in the same location on 26th avenue in richmond district as it has been for the past 23 years. the u-haul disappeared some time between 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. yesterday. organizers have the bibs so that race, as i mentioned, will go on. in the south bay, thousands of people will be taking to the streets of downtown san jose for the turkey trot down here. it's video from last year's race. from a 5k to 10k both walks and runs and plenty of activities for all ages. expect some detour physical you're planning to drive in the downtown area. money collected from this race all goes to charity. well, this holiday is all about being grateful and helping those in need. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in san francisco with some salvation army volunteers are doing this morning to make sure they have happy thanksgiving. steph? >> that's exactly what this morning has been about, laura and scott. feeding 3,400 people alone.

just today alone in san francisco. you can see almost 500 volunteers will eventually be helping out, but now this entire room is packed. not even 7:00 this morning. what they're doing, of course, they have 2,200 pounds of turkey, roasted, carved up. they're putting it into these little boxes here and then meals that are sealed and delivered, again, to 3,400 people all throughout today. and we've spoken with a lot of people here. they're from all around the bay area and a lot from san francisco, of course. but all around the bay area, even young lady from seattle who is visiting and she's taking her time out to volunteer, as well. we spoke to many of the staff nebs who say that they were in once need of help and salvation army gave it to them and now they're giving back, including the dancing turkey. i don't know if you saw the last one, raul said last thanksgiving did not only have a meal, but not only a meal this
