let the shopping begin... or continue for that matter... thanksgiving thur s let the shopping beginning or continue for that matter. thanksgiving thursday shopping flows right into black friday. here's an idea. don't shop at all. today is the day a national retailer gave employees a paid day off and is encouraging everybody to get outside. shop as it goes up in flames. "today in the bay" starts right now. and a very good friday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. >> another cold start to the day. temperatures very similar to what we saw yesterday at this time. waking up to temperatures in the 30s and 40s. the north bay not as cold as

what it was. the cold spot this morning, the south bay at 38 degrees. san francisco now at 50. we have a freeze watch and warning in effect for our inland valleys and after 9:00, sun will come up and temperatures warm above freezing and by this afternoon back into the 50s. more rain in the forecast next week. we'll talk more about that coming up in my next report. back to you guys. well, this was the scene at best buy in pleasant hill last night. doors opened at 5:00. shoppers stood in line for hours for flat screen tvs at $149, but those sold out in minutes. the store's general manager says shoppers will find more bargains this weekend and believes it's going to be a good year for the nation's economy. >> people more confident about going out, there's a lot of choices for people. i think they're looking at how technology now can enhance their lives. >> not just in pleasant hill. there were lines of shoppers

circling the target store in walnut creek. tonight, everyone is joining that black friday chaos. rei is closed today. all rei workers are getting paid to take the holiday off and enjoy the outdoors. many of them say they're relieved to get this reprieve from customers and the shopping frenzy. >> it's amazing. one of the best things we get for the holiday. not having to deal with the crazy crowds on black friday. >> many are taking advantage of the time off by going hiking or out to the snow. workers picking up the pieces after an intense fire. it broke out furniture in concord around 7:00 last night. our crews first on the scene. they say witnesses say they could see flames along interstate 680. the fire spread through 20,000 square feet. fortunately, nobody hurt but emotions ran high. >> when i saw the flames as i pulled up i did start crying.

it's scary. never dealt with anything that has been related to me. >> it took about an hour for crews to put out that fire. no word on the cause. the firefighters do believe it was accidental. in the south bay, flames forced a family from their home. it happened last night in south san jose. investigators say a heater in the garage ignited that fire. family managed to get out safely. two dogs and four rabbits were also rescued. friendly neighbors have agreed to take in some pets. he gave us a preview of it, but let's go back to anthony this morning for the front of the store friday. >> unfortunately, another cold start to the day. looking at temperatures in the 30s across parts of the south bay. but later on this afternoon, a nice rebound. highs back into the 50s. let's start out with a shot across parts of san jose this morning. you could see kristen getting going. your microclimate forecast does bring san jose back up to 55 degrees and 56 for saratoga and

san francisco today, again, mid-50s is all we're going to see for high temperatures. the thing you'll note across the entire bay today, everyone will see sunshine from napa over towards livermore. w5 56 today in livermore. we have big changes for next week. a wet pattern starts to develop as soon as monday. we'll start tasee the showers move in across parts of the north bay on monday and gets going by wednesday and thursday. in fact, we'll tap into that atmospheric river. you hear us talk about it this time of year. of course, winter hasn't even started officially. that starts in december. we'll talk about winter weather headed our way and a freeze warning in effect this morning. we'll talk more about that coming up in a little bit, guys. the cold is there black friday shoppers are out there and some of them were actually shopping yesterday. >> it is hard to believe, but people hit the ground running. they don't want to stop. hoping to score some great deals among them bob redell reporting

this morning live from the outlets in livermore. one of the many shopping hubs that opened early. how big are the crowds there? i see some people lined up behind you. >> yeah, this is the line. here we are 4:30 in the morning. it's cold out and people are bundled up and waiting outside torry birch. let's see, how long have you guys been waiting in line so far? >> like half an hour. >> half an hour. >> what is so special inside? why wait so long? >> you don't know how much you're going to get off. >> do you know what the deal is? >> do you know how much? >> maybe 20, 40. >> 40%, is that what we're hearing. that's remarkable.

they don't even know what the deal is but they are waiting. we did speak with management here earlier and they say this is the busiest this mall has ever been on a black friday. they opened 50 more stores and i can tell you parking is crazy, like it is here every black friday. this is right off 580, if you're not familiar with the location and people are actually parking across the interstate. at a different shopping center and walking the overpass so they can get in here and shop. the national federal retail federation are predicting around 136 million people will shop this four-day holiday weekend. you're thinking that's a lot of people. if you look at it compared to last year only a 1.5% increase over 2014, scott and laura. here you got it, manning security to make sure that people don't rush. only letting a certain amount of people in there at a certain

needed break for children at the the ronald mcdonald house in pal 4:40 right now. thanksgiving day provided a much-needed break for children at the ronald mcdonald house in palo alto. >> they smiled and ate and acted like kids. >> it tasted like honey. >> reporter: like many 15-year-old boys jeremy has food -- >> turkey, ham, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, stuffing. >> reporter: and football on the brain. >> i have to admit it, but i like the ducks more than stanford. >> reporter: but unlike most teenagers, he's patiently waiting for a life-a saving surgery. >> if they find me a heart, they'll call us.

>> reporter: jeremy was born with a heart defect. his dad, steven, also says at the time he wasn't strong enough to be placed on the transplant list. >> last year we didn't know if he was going to be around this year. i feel blessed. >> reporter: they have been living at the ronald mcdonald house in palo alto for the last nine months while jeremy is being treated at stanford hospital. today candy and a group from the jubilee christian center made a feast with all the fixings they've done for the last six years. >> to be able to share thanksgiving with people that are really giving thanks today for what they have. and even for what they don't have means a lot. >> reporter: they continue to hope for a healthy heart, so maybe one day jeremy can -- >> play high school football. >> reporter: but today he finally got to enjoy the thanksgiving meal he has been dreaming about. >> i'm just ready to eat.

okay. so, we've digested the turkey and a lot of people bundling up to go outside because a cold start to our morning. >> colder in the south bay this

morning than it was yesterday. yesterday the north bay was near freezing and today the south bay. we're going to warm above freezing once we get past 9:00 and then after that we'll see temperatures warm at least in the 50s. here's a live shot in san francisco this morning. you can see the twinkling lights of the city. san francisco is the only place we don't have a warning or watch in effect this morning because it is 50 degrees right now. everywhere else without that marine influence and 39 for the peninsula and north bay. look at that 49 degrees. they have a little bit of a wind this morning, that's why we're not looking at freezing temperatures like we saw yesterday. temperatures back into the mid-50s from the north bay down to the south bay. here's what we have in effect until 9:00. we have the freeze warning in purple. the darker purple there from and over towards contra costa county and those are the freeze warnings. around the inner bay, you have the frost advisories. we get into this time of year and we start talking frost and

freeze, what does that mean? frost advisories temperatures and not as bad as a freeze warning. that's when temperatures dip below 32. that's what we have this morning. that could actually kill plants. if you have plants outside, go ahead and bring them because our temperatures have yet to fall below freezing. temperatures later on this afternoon, again, back into the 50s. no big surprise here. kind of like what we saw yesterday. 55 for san mateo and 55 for san francisco and north bay, east bay and the tri-valley at least for today. temperatures do warm up this weekend just a little bit back into the 60s. we'll show you that coming up in the next report. back to you, laura. >> that was a good explanation but i don't have time to go home and bring my plants back in. thanks. black friday is here, but you don't have to leave your house to get the deal. >> in fact, shoppers have already spent more than $1 billion since yesterday. for more on that and the rest of the news before the bell, we turn to landon dowdy. hope you had a good

thanksgiving, landon. >> scott and laura, good morning to you both. i hope you did, as well. short day for wall street as markets close at 1:00 p.m. eastern time. futures are relatively flat this morning. stocks look to end the holiday week in the green after a flat session on wednesday. the dow trading in the tightest range of the year, but still on pace for its second straight this month. the dow rose and the nasdaq up 13 to 5116. shoppers who didn't brave the malls on thanksgiving were still busy buying gifts online. tracked 4,500 retail sites says more than $1 billion had been spent as of 5:00 p.m. eastern. that's up 22% from last year. target ceo says online sales are off to a very strong start. and if you're heading out to shop today, don't forget your phone. a valuable tool for restaleers

who learn more about what you like. a combination of google web searches and google maps and allow retailers to figure out exactly which search terms or ads are drive you to get off the couch and into their scotores. back to you. our housing crisis, especially rent control will take center stage and a big deal in san jose. advocates out trying to get black friday shoppers to join that fight. the city council is considering changing the current ordinance that dates back to 1979, which allows landlords to raise rents by 8% yearly. housing activists say that's too much. they want a 2% cap. and this being a rent fight, this one is being watched closely by other bay area cities. >> we need others to step up, but when a big city like san jose does it, it gives the capital necessary to other politicians and smaller towns to get things done on rent control. >> the city council will take the issue on next month.

a new ordinance could be in place, perhaps, early next year. as many affyou head out to enjoy state parks later for free later today, park officials are warning you to be mindful of car break-ins. while many folks come to to enjoy nature's beauty, thieves like to take advantage of the cars. look inside cars where purses and electronics are easy to see and steal. there are actions you can take to prevent it from happening. >> liz said to me, i locked the car and i said, no, i want to get my purse out of the car. >> national parks police say if you come, enjoy the view and take the valuables with you. call 911 if you see suspicious behavior. new information on the costco e. coli outbreak. new tests show salinos vegetables could be the source

out of the outbreak. the ingredients in that salad. nearly 20 people in california and six other states got sick after eating the salinas veggies, the farm now says it's recalling a mix of diced celery and onion, not only sold at costco but also at target and starbucks. experts say this is not the same kind of e. coli, but it will make you sick. four friends stranded at sea. they were fishing off the coast of long beach when big waves threw them overboard. for nearly two hours, the men treaded in the water clinging to the side of their 18-foot boat. one boater said it was fate and flashlight that saved them. >> a light flashing when it was night. just about an hour nonstop. >> with the sunrise came a passing freight boat and within a minute rescuers reached them and they were plucked out of the

water there. rescuers say the strong el nino helped the boaters because the currents made the waters warmer than normal. this weekend is the de deadliest of the year. stepping up patrols to make sure everyone has a safe holiday. starting last night and going through sunday night dui checkpoints set up across the bay area. the chp released new numbers showing dui arrests on the night before thanksgiving were up this year, both in the bay area and california in general. officers say they want to drop that number of deadly crashes. >> we looked for the fluctuation of speed. speed in general. the way they maintain the car and within the lane. a lot of swerving. are they driving on the shoulder. >> according to a study by mothers against drunk driving and uber, dui arrests dropped after ride sharing amerged. officers are looking for drivers

welcome back. if you are staying inside huddled up under the blankets, cold either way. >> no doubt. you say a freeze warning today. >> in fact, a freeze warning in effect across our inland valleys until 9:00 this morning. heads up on that. that means temperatures will dip below freezing momentarily. we have some wind across parts of the north bay and san francisco. that's why temperatures aren't as cold this morning. yesterday they were actually colder at 49 degrees, though, this morning. 50 in san francisco and you get away from that wind and the lack of friction allows for

temperatures to fall and that's where we're at right now across the south bay. 38 degrees and 39 in the peninsula, but still mild in san francisco at 50. look at that, san francisco only move five degrees today. 55 for your high. 55 for the south bay and 56 for the north bay. we do have warmer weather in store for the weekend. we'll talk more about that and another chance of rain coming up. we'll see you guys in a little bit. 4:55. 26,000 people braved the cold and hit the streets to make room for their thanksgiving feast in the south bay. the annual turkey trot in the south bay was a huge success. the 11th year for the annual event run. they raised nearly $1 million for five charities. the event has become a thanksgiving tradition for many families. san jose is not the only turkey trot. more than a dozen other thanksgiving runs around the bay area. >> of course, another south bay tradition. this one has been going on for more than 70 years. the winner gets the big bone.

the annual thanksgiving lincoln high versus san jose high. lincoln has won 18 straight years but this rivalry is about more than just scores about coming home for the holidays. >> i come here every year and meet my buddies for breakfast and come and watch the game. >> many of the players on both sides say they grew up watching this game and a dream come true just to play. >> a pretty day out there. giving thanks to our troops overseas making them feel a little more like home. dining halls in afghanistan had a heavy dose of the thanksgiving classics. their jaws dropped when they saw the tables loaded with turkeys, mashed potatoes and pies and everything else. some members of congress also flew to the middle of the east to east with soldiers from their home states. two astronauts shared a thanksgiving meal in outer space. scott kelly had turkey and candied yams and potatoes and sounds traditional, but as you

can see came in the standard turkey plastic pouch that was stapled to a plastic board. kelly says the yams were delicious and did a flip to prove it. both astronauts will come back to earth in a few months. an unlikely development at a safari park in moscow. what was supposed to be dinner for a siberian tiger is a best friend. was meant to be nothing more than a tasty meal. a bit of role reversal. chased a murout of his own sleeping place. sleeping in the tiger spot for several nights now and the tigers seem to be okay with it. the two animals have also taken to following each other around the enclosure. >> i hope that ends well. >> i hope so, too. it's interesting they threw a live animal in there. >> well, i don't know. is that standard? >> i don't know. coming up, it's getting chilly across the bay. kris sanchez is out there in the frozen tundra. if you're just getting up, you're behind.

"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. going to get pretty cold out there. let's check in with anthony. >> this freeze warning goes into effect from now until 9:00. temperatures starting to fall near freezing. you notice across the south bay already starting to fall near freezing just in the last hour dropped two degrees and now 36. 48 in the north bay. that's now our cold spot this morning. that usually is the south bay is one of our cold spots today and the east bay along with the peninsula. you will find temperatures warming once you get past 9:00, but going to be a slow crawl today when the freezeern waing expires after 9:00 and then back to the mid-50s. plenty of sunshine. bring the plants in if you still have them outside and the sensitive plants don't do well with the cold and the pets don't do well, either. we'll talk to youut
