"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. going to get pretty cold out there. let's check in with anthony. >> this freeze warning goes into effect from now until 9:00. temperatures starting to fall near freezing. you notice across the south bay already starting to fall near freezing just in the last hour dropped two degrees and now 36. 48 in the north bay. that's now our cold spot this morning. that usually is the south bay is one of our cold spots today and the east bay along with the peninsula. you will find temperatures warming once you get past 9:00, but going to be a slow crawl today when the freezeern waing expires after 9:00 and then back to the mid-50s. plenty of sunshine. bring the plants in if you still have them outside and the sensitive plants don't do well with the cold and the pets don't do well, either. we'll talk to you about that

rain chance next week. guys, back to you. >> it is a very, very cold start, as you mentioned, the freeze warning in effect right now. that's where santa clara county, they actually opened their doors early for the homeless. >> that's right. "today in the bay" kris sanchez is out there, as well. with more on how they're helping. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott. good morning, laura. the shelters don't usually open until the last day of november. we're clearly not there yet. but because of the dangerous cold, the shelters did open a few days early to get people in off the streets. some of the 6,500 plus homeless people who have no place to go. this particular shelter where we go, the reception center has 250 beds and serves adlts only but the one down in gilroy, the gilroy center at the national guard armory also opened in this cold snap and there they have more than 100 beds for families with children. another shelter will open in december in sunnyvale. each of these places people can get in out of the cold and get warm food and a hot shower and

that's short term. long term they can also get employment and medical care and referrals, as well. it was a very frosty night last night. a freeze warning goes into effect again tonight at 11:00 and will continue until 9:00 saturday morning with temperatures dropping below freezing. if you're watching us on tv right now, you know that you don't need those services, but you certainly can help deliver some of those services. on the home wish list we found donations of money always accepted and they will also take new or gently used blankets and they can use new socks, underwear for their patrons and if you have any extra toiletries for your plane ride, you can also donate those. find out more information when we put a link up on our website, nbcbayarea.com. and certainly takes a lot of effort to get folks in out of the cold and certainly santa clara county is doing the best it can with the resources they

have. again, more than 6,500 homeless people in this county. during the cold snaps, just aren't enough beds for everyone. again, you can help with the donation if you're out and perhaps pick up a few pair of socks and blankets and donate those, as well. in santa clara county or san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." to the other extreme with black friday, many shoppers actually hit the ground running yesterday. >> that's right. stores were packwood people hoping to score some good deals. bob redell live at the outlets in livermore. what is the atmosphere out there right now, bob. >> very busy, very crowded, hard to find parking. the livermore, the san francisco premium outlets here in livermore have been open since 6:00 last night. there is one store i see that has everything in store for 20 bucks or less. other stores, 50% off. you're looking in the coach store right now and they're doing, let's see 70%, plus an additional 30% off your entire

purchase this weekend, which is one reason why the store is so crowded right now. actually, so crowded. come on over here, henry. if you walk over here you can see the line of people waiting to get in. one of the few stores that have lines because they don't want the stores overcrowded. you talk to the people here and you would think everything is great with the economy because people are talking about spending hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars to save maybe half that amount. if they spend $1,000, they're saving $1,000. how long have you guys been waiting in line? >> 15 minutes. >> how much have you spent so far? >> probably $1,000. how much have you saved? >> i don't know. at least a couple thousand. >> really? >> yeah. >> how much more do you think you'll spend in there? >> that's up to my wife. >> how much do you think you'll be losing in there? >> i wouldn't say losing. it's an investment. >> it is an investment. a purse she will want to replace in a month from now. how much do you think you'll

need to watch out for. good morning. >> good morning. >> in addition to bundling up and the beauty of the golden gate bridge draws up so many people and there is warning from so many national parks and that is, don't leave stuff in your car, even if it's for a very short time. especially in places like the marin headlands where picture perfect views are a huge draw for tourists and locals. popular during the holidays and crowd would many cars so much sometimes that people are making their own parking spot. the national park service says thieves are also enjoying the views. instead of looking at the scenery, they're hunting for valuables inside your cars, especially items easy to see like purses and electronics. >> people get out of their cars and they hike and then they come back and, oh, my gosh, that would be awful. >> and there are reminders like this one at the golden gate bridge welcome center warning you to prevent theft, lock your doors and if you need to leave anything in your vehicle, put it all in the trunk.

the park service says police are stepping up patrols and will alert visitors about an uptick in car breakins and even passing out some information packets to help visitors avoid being the target of the next car break in. live here near the golden gate bridge, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." workers in an east bay family-owned business picking up the pieces after an intense fire that broke out at the sam karr office furniture. our crew first on the scene. witnesses could see flames along interstate 680 and that fire spread through 28,000 square feet. nobody hurt but emotions ran high. >> when i see the flames as i was pulling up, i did start crying. it's scary. never dealt with anything that has been related to me. >> it took about an hour for crews to put out that fire. no word on the cause. firefighters do believe it was accidental. 5:07. talking about how cold it is out there this morning, but very special warning for you. want to check in with anthony.

>> good morning. in fact that freeze warning has been extended not only for today but also for tomorrow and sunday. a series of cold mornings ahead of us. a look at our temperatures right now. 35 in saratoga and downtown san jose at 36 degrees. the other cold spot is the east bay. doneline right now below freezing. you get closer to the inner bay and that marin influence keeps it warmer from alameda and that's where we have the frost adviso advisory. temperatures aren't expected to dip and concord at 38 and livermore at 35 degrees. a wide spread of temperatures this morning mainly because the further you get away from the water, that's where we'll see temperatures colder. that's where you know to take heed. you'll notice temperatures back into the 50s from the bay area and south bay and san francisco and even for the north bay. we do have a better weekend ahead, but more cold nights. we'll see temperatures warmer in the afternoon and then some more

minnesota at the mall of america. he gave oscloser look at the mad dash for deals, jay good morning. >> good morning to you, scott, laura. what we're seeing, at least overnight and into the early morning is these crowds coming in in waves. but as it always happens, the crowds and the bargains, they're going to continue to grow throughout the day here. the rush began before the turkey was even cold. >> we're starting early this time. might as well, you know, early bird specials. >> reporter: now thanksgiving gives way to black friday, analysts say the bargains will be even bigger. >> about 55% of consumers will be out shopping on black friday and that's because 40% of consumers feel they can get the best discounts. >> reporter: many looking to save on high dollar gifts. >> television, electronics and even big ticketed, high-end designer accessories like handbags and shoes. >> reporter: when they do find what they're looking for, data

malls on thanksgiving were still busy buying gifts online. daily digital index which tracks 4,500 retail sites says more than $1 billion had been spent as of 5:00 p.m. eastern. that's up 22% from last year. target ceo says online sales are off to a strong start. targt and walmart both launched their black friday deals online a day early. if you're heading out today, don't forget your phone. a valuable tool for retailers who can use it to learn more about what products you like. more are signing on to google's ad technology which uses a combination of google web searches and google maps and allows retailers which are driving you to get off the couch and into the stores. scott and laura, back over to you. >> thanks, landon. rent control will take center stage. a big deal in san jose. housing trying to get black friday shoppers to join that fight. the city council is considering changing the current ordinance that dates back to 1979, which

allows landlords to raise rents by as much as 8% a year. housing say that's too much. they would like to see a 2% cap. the rent fight is closely watched by other bay area cities. >> we need other towns to step up. when a big city like san jose does it, it gives the political capital necessary to other politicians in smaller towns to get things done on rent control. >> the city council will take up that issue next month. a new ordinance could be in place early next year. 5:16 right now. time to check that microclimate forecast. anthony, we're thrilled you're here this morning. >> i'm full from last night. >> little digestion going on. >> maybe until 7:00 or 8:00. >> i'm ready for more pie. >> right? >> for dessert. >> everybody ate it. my family cleared me out. >> a pie early, put it aside and save that one and then make another pie for the folks. all right, i'm just saying. want to get you started this morning with cold temperatures. we are looking at a freeze

warning across the bay area, if you're just joining us this morning. it is cold out there. maybe some coffee to go along with that and it is chilly. need some hot cocoa. look at these temperatures. we are in the 30s. 36 degrees in the south bay. that's one of our coldest spot along with the east bay and tri-valley temperatures near freezing and that would be lovely. 49 degrees in san francisco and 48 in the north bay. later on this afternoon, temperatures back in the mid-50s and across the south bay, same for the peninsula and the east bay and san francisco and the north bay, as well. now, here's the freeze warning i was telling you about. the darker purple that denotes where temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees tonight. at least in the next couple of hours. now, this freeze warning is going to go geb for tomorrow and for sunday, as well. you notice the blue, that indicates frost advisories where temperatures aren't going to be as cold, but definitely still chilly. we won't see temperatures below freezing there. later on this afternoon, again, everybody back into the mid-50s from south bay into san

francisco and the north bay and the east bay and the tri-valley, as well. no big temperature spreads today because of that cold, canadian air in place. now, here's a big change to our forecast. we were talking yesterday about some rain headed our way for monday. unfortunately, it looks like this system will fall apart. we'll still see some showers to the north bay and to the coastline to start the workweek on monday. tuesday will be a dry day. wednesday, more clouds move in and then by thursday we'll be looking at another chance of some showers. so, get ready for a wet pattern to develop, at least next week. and the short term of things, the next five days, temperatures will moderate a little bit. back to the 60s in san jose and then that cold air starts to move in for monday and tuesday setting the stage for more rain by wednesday and thursday. guys, back over to you. >> thanks, anthony. the king tides continues to catch californians off guard. the tide is unusually high this year in southern california. many neighbors there are reporting flooding and electrical problems. the naestional weather service says peak is this week.

levels could hit 7 1/2 feet. 5:18 right now. holiday fishing trip turn under to a life-threatening experience for friends who were stranded at sea. they were fishing off the coast of long beach when big waves threw them overboard. for nearly two hours, the man treaded in the water clinging to the sides of their 18-foot boats. >> had a light flashing when it was night. flashing for about an hour about nonstop. with the sunrise came a passing freight boat and within minutes rescuers reached them. look at that, pulling them out of the water into the boat for safety. rescuers say the strong el nino helped the boaters because the current made the water warmer than normal. coming up, an unwanted guest at the white house. another fence jumper. the special he had on that police helped him scale that new fence. >> that's not obvious. an emergency landing for a blimp

that was en route to yesterday's "macy's thks 5:232. emergency landing for a blimp that was en route to yesterday's macy's thanksgiving day parade. the manhattan blimp reportedly ran out of fuel and was being blown around by strong winds. it was supposed to land at a nearby airport and instead landed on a field behind a school on long island. the blimp was scheduled to fly over the parade in new york city for the manhattan institute. luckily no one was hurt. another fence jumper at the white house as the first family

was getting ready for thanksgiving dinner inside. joseph caputo wearing an american flag as a cape jumped the fence. he was carrying a folder. he was quickly caught and faces criminal charges. we don't know what that was in that folder or his background. this is a reoccurring prab problem at the white house. last year two people jumped the fence and one man made it even inside the white house. >> we're always at kind of a heightened vigilance and we follow the lead of the president and the secretary of homeland security who came out and told people to be city smart. >> back in july, the spikes were installed in the top of the fence. secret service said it would make it more difficult to fence jumpers but that jumper wore gloves and that helped him scale the newly upgrated fence. another attack by an islamic state group this happened on a shiite mosque in bangladesh. opened gunfire wounding one man and three others before running away. an isis affiliate is claiming

responsibility for the deadly violence. the second attack on the shiite lm community in a mosque. the french president held a somber ceremony today in memory of those killed in the paris terror attacks. soldiers, members of the government and families of victims gathered at a french monument before the names and ages of the 130 names were read all aloud. mali authorities have arrested two men accused being linked to the deadly attack there last week. nearly 20 people were killed when two men stormed the hotel with weapons and explosives and held dozens of people hostage. it's 5:24. coming up, it's one of the deadliest times of the year on the roads. we go behind the scenes of the chp. let you know what officers are looking for. when it comes to drivers who partied a little too much. anda clara county is opening the cold weather shelters early

opening early. they usually don't open until november 30th or so but because of the freezing temperature that anthony mentioned, they are opening and they opened last night. now, this shelter that we are at this morning, the bcardo reception center serves adlts only but one down in gilroy at the national guard armory. it opened during this cold snap there. there are more than 100 beds for family with children and another county shelter opening in sunnyvale coming up in december. now, at each of these places people can get in out of the cold and get warm food and a hot shower. also getting employment and medical care as well as referrals. it was a frosty night last night and another freeze warning goes into effect at 11:00. continue through 9:00 tomorrow morning with dangerously cold temperatures sometimes dropping below freezing. so, if you are watching us right now, chances are you don't need these shelter services, but you can help to deliver them. on the first wish list,

this is outside torry birch handbag store. 40% until 8:00. come over here, the ugg store maybe it's just so much more popular because it's so cold out here. they have a line out front. quite a few stores here in the san francisco premium outlets. they have been oepen for almost 12 hours. they opened 6:00 last night. we spoke with management and they said is the most people they've ever seen here on a black friday. keep in mind, they did add 50 stores this past august. that could account for the uptick in attendance and i'll tell you, parking here is very, very difficult. if you're not familiar, this is right by 580 and parking across the interstate at a separate shopping center. just to give you a sense of the type of crowd. i'll tell you, the few we have been talking to, they've been coming here with their wallets loaded full of money or credit cards and willing to spend. >> find any good deals? >> yeah. >> how much money did you spend? >> for now, we spent $500. >> $600. >> probably $600.

doors opened at 5:00 and shoppers stood in line for hours. flatscreen tvs for $1. sold out in minutes. the store's general manager says shopper will find more bargains this coming weekend and believes this will be a good year for the nation's economy. >> people more confident about going out. there's a lot of choices for people. i ink the they're looking at how technology now can enhance their lives. >> not just pleasant hill, lines of shoppers circled the target store in walnut creek for deals everywhere. >> people are being curdious out there. not everyone enjoying the black friday chaos. rei closed today. all rei workers getting paid to take the holiday off and good enjoy the outdoors. many say they're relieved to get the reprieve from customers in that shopping frenzy. >> it's amazing. one of the best things we get for the holiday not having to deal with all the crazy crowds on black friday. >> many of them taking advantage of the time off by going hiking

or out to the snow. you won't see just rei workers out on the trails. almost all the free passes offered for state parks are gone. an organization called sthav redwoods sponsored that program after getting anonymous donations. passes for 44 of the parks now gone. but as of this morning, only had free passes left. we checked for you. here they are. all of them on the northern. if you don't have a pass, you can still go to any state park, you just have to pay the normal entrance free. >> i think we could make this a thing. go out and enjoy your family and enjoy nature, but, if you are headed to the parks, a warning today. >> that's right. what have been taking advantage of, especially in the areas like the marin headlands which offer picturesque views and day and night. large crowds expected today and through the holidays, the warning is this. don't leave anything in your vehicle at any point because you may be the target of the next burglary. >> we came to take some pictures and then we decided to take a walk and liz said to me, i locked the car. i said, no, i want to get my purse out of the car. >> and that's the right response, according to the national park service, which has also signs up like this one. prevent theft, lock the doors. store valuables in the trunk. the national park service is also said to add patrols and pass information out to visitors warning them about an uptick in car burglaries through the holidays. crowds come out for the views. now, you may be surprised how far away or how close you are to your vehicle as these break ins are happening. we'll have that coming up in the next half hour. stephanie chuang, "today in the

bay." workers at an east bay family-owned business picking up the pieces after an intense fire broke out in concord about 7:00 last night. some witnesses say they could see the flames along interstate 680. the fire spread through 20,000 square feet. nobody hurt, but emotions ran high. when i saw the flames as i was pulling up, i did start crying. it is scary. never dealt with anything that has been related to me. >> it took crews about an hour to put out the fire. no word on the cause, but firefighters do believe this is accidental. in the south bay flames forced a family from their home. it happened last night in south san jose. investigators say a heater in the garage ignited that fire. the family managed to get out safely. two dogs and four rabbits were also rescued and how nice, some friendly neighbor agreed to take in their pets. this weekend among the deadliest of the year. chp officers stepping up patrols statewide to make sure everybody has a safe holiday.

starting last night dui checkpoints across the bay area. chp released new numbers showing dui arrests on the night before thanksgiving went up this year. both in the bay area and california in general. officers say they want to reduce that number to zero. >> we look for the fluctuation of speed, speed in general. the way they maintain the car and within the lanes. a lot of swerving. are they driving on the shoulder? >> according to a study by mothers against drunk driving and uber, dui arrests dropped in california after ride sharing emerged. officers on the look out for drivers noting seat belts, as well. new details on the e. coli outbreak at costco. farm in salinas could be to blame. vegetables in the chicken salad sold at costco could be the

outbreak. nearly 20 people in california and six other states got sick after eating the vegetables. the farm in salinas now says it's recalling a mix of diced celery and onions sold at not only costco but target and starbucks. experts say this is not the same type of e. coli linked to chipotle restaurants. a chilly start to our day. let's check in with anthony. >> in fact, still seeing our temperatures fall across parts of the south bay and east bay. our cold spots right now the tri-valley and south bay where temperatures are near freezing in the 30s. across parts of the north bay, still in the 40s because of a little bit of a wind later on this afternoon all back to the mid-50s kind of like what we saw yesterday. a chilly afternoon headed our way, once again, as this cold air mass stays in place. freeze warning in effect for the darkeral you see here. now, this is in effect until 9:00 this morning. the frost advisory for the inner bay and the coastline where temperatures are expected to get cold, bunot freezing. now, this is going to be the scenario for the next couple of mornings all the way to sunday

morning. keep that in mind not only this morning, but saturday and sunday, as well. 55 in san jose and 56 in pacifica and ocean beach at 55 and up in the north bay, santa rosa at 66 and hayward 54 and pleasanton right at 55 degrees. to start off the workweek a chance of rain in the forecast beginning as soon monday. primarily for the north bay and the coastline. watch what happens as this thing moves in. we're not expecting widespread rain on monday. i don't think the east bay and south bay will see anything on monday. clouds increase and another shot of rain inmoves in. this system looks more strong and it will make its way to the south bay and tri-valley. talk about rain and how much we can pick up and see if there is any more snow headed our way. anthony has been talking about the freezing temperatures across the bay area and kris telling us about the homeless, as well. >> one veteran in san jose, however, that is getting a lot of money from the veterans administration, but he still

needs to beg for more money. damian gives us his story. >> reporter: this is his spot and if he had a choice, this is not where he would be. >> embarrassing. >> reporter: the navy veteran did not want to give his name, but said he spent the final months of the vietnam war here aboard the "uss midway." what refugees boarded after the fall of saigon. >> women and children running all over the ship. >> reporter: after the war, one thing led to another and this is where the veteran find himself today. begging for more money. more because the former sailor says he's already receiving roughly $1,000 per month from the department of veterans affairs. just enough to lease a room in high-price silicon valley from someone he describes as a nice lady. >> i remember when i was younger, i would see people do it and i swore to myself, i could never do that.

by renters until earlier this year when the homeowner moved back in. david says they hadn't had a chance to get to know each other. well, they know a lot about other now, as well as more than a little bit about the kindness of strangers. it was a great day on murphy court. all thanks to a bad view. >> you can see above the garage. >> reporter: that view was out david perez's living room window of his neighbor's home two doors down. >> hard to watch. >> reporter: hard to watch his 75-year-old neighbor trying to reroof his own home. >> feeling sorry for somebody that age to be up there and trying to do it himself. >> reporter: problem was david knew next to nothing about roofing. but he did know a little bit about social media. so he snuck a picture of his neighbor and posted it on facebook. asking anyone who knew anything about roofing if they wanted to come by on saturday to help.

his picture was shared more than 1,000 times. >> still, he was worried people wouldn't show up at 9:00 a.m. he was right to be worried. they showed up earlier. >> i woke up and i looked outside around 7:30 and noticed people were already on the roof. >> reporter: by mid-morning a crew of 20 on the roof and dos of food enough for 50 waiting for them on the ground. they came from across the bay and down the street. almost none of them knowing david before this morning. they just wanted to help a neighbor help his neighbor. bob valdez, a roofer with 18 years experience brought his son with him all the way from tracy. >> got to show him the values of life, too. >> reporter: in the middle of it all, watching it all a little stunned was the homeowner, richard. richard says he'd been losing his faith in his fellow man over the years and these folks, it

turned out, weren't just repairing his roof, they were repairing his soul. >> because i was getting pretty discouraged about what people want to do and what people do to each other. that's not good. and now i can see that it's not always that way. >> reporter: with so many hands, the work went quickly and it was just after noon that the last shingle was ready to be laid and they asked richard to finish what he had started. his roof now ready to handle any water that may fall, be it rain in the winter or tears today. >> all the people that came out and helped and got it done so quickly is amazing. >> in fremont, garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. >> i love that. now, let's go paint the

same deal for the east bay, where winds are very calm. right 3 1 in dublin and 35 in dublin and closer to the water and the marine influence keeps our temperatures warmer. so, the inner bay not expected to dip into the freezing temperatures, but it's going to be cold wherever you go this morning. by this afternoon, your microclimate forecast san jose bong to 55 degrees and 5 for san mateo and 56 for the embarcadero and san francisco, if you're headed out there, nice, bright day for you. 56 in santa rosa and livermore up to 56 degrees. now, we've been talking about the chance of rain that will develop next week. monday a weak storm system is going to move through. this is going to pass primarily through the north. watch what happens as it moves through. it falls apart and weakens. monday a few showers that coastline and the peninsula the north day. that's about it. wednesday thursday, a stronger storm system will push through and this could dump decent amounts of rain. we'll talk about the potential of a quarter of an inch and the north bay could get up to an inch. we will watch very closely and,

garvin thomas has their heartwarming story in this bay area proud. >> candy alcott doesn't have a long history of great hum humanitarian efforts and a preschoolteacher and mother of six, she didn't have a lot of time to throw herself into causes, until this one cause. one which burned very close to her heart. lives in lake county these days. it is to be reminded every single day of the devastating power of nature. >> i need all volunteers down here. >> reporter: how nice it must be then to be the force of nature. >> all the chairs go behind the tables down there. >> reporter: working to build them back up. >> kids' helmets right here. dlt helmets on that table. >> reporter: she's not a trained relief worker. she's a preschoolteacher from livermore. she used to live in lake county, though, which is why she was so moved by what she saw on her tv screen in september.

>> i saw -- >> reporter: feeling she had to do something, candy packed her minivan with supplies and stard making trips to the disaster zone. when the bike repair at the high school heard what she was doing, they donated 18 bicycles. candy handed those out one day in september. but one little boy there too late. >> i didn't have any more bikes. >> reporter: she promised to come back. >> that's where the promise comes in. this is about a promise to one little boy. >> this is about that little boy right here. >> reporter: candy did come back. in october. but not just with one bike for him, she brought 300 more. and just one month later, the bike angels united returned, once again, this time 500 bikes in in tow. >> we have approximately 220 new bikes and 300 used bikes. >> reporter: many of these families are in the process of

"today in the bay" starts now. well, good morning, every wp. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. >> i'm laura garciaen. we're talking about freezing temperatures this morning. >> in fact, temperatures continue to fall. this is now the coldest part of morning. we start to see this beginning to happen right near sunrise. you'll notice those temperatures right near freezing across parts of the south, along with the peninsula and the east bay. the north bay dealing with some wind this morning. that's keeping temperature little bit more mild. 47 degrees there, but everywhere else looking at temperatures near freezing. now, once you get past 9:00 that threat for a freeze warning will actually fire and then we'll see temperatures back into the 50s later on this afternoon. we do have a couple more rounds of freezing weather, at least saturday and sunday morning. we'll talk more about that and a

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang is headed to the scene and she'll bring us updates when she gets there. a chp investigating two deadly early morning crashes. the most recent happened on the off ramp on interstate 680 near walnut creek. when crews got to the scene, they found a car fully engulfed. crews put out those flames and found body inside. the onramp still closed at this hour as that investigation continues. >> that car almost unrecognizable. also new this morn, an overnight crash killed one and sent three to the hospital. happened off 98th avenue just after midnight. the onramp was closed for about two hours as the chp investigated. so far, no word on the c
